PATTAYA, Thailand – As the Songkran holiday begins, Pattaya is heating up in more ways than one. The city, known for its lively water fights and festive energy, is facing a combination of intense heat, the threat of summer storms, and heavy traffic congestion as millions head out of Bangkok.
The Highway Police Division anticipates more than 3.6 million vehicles will leave the capital, peaking on the night of April 11 through the 12th. Special measures are being taken to ease traffic flow, including the trial opening of the new M6 Motorway from Hin Kong to Nakhon Ratchasima. Though it won’t directly impact Pattaya-bound travelers, the overall traffic increase means major routes heading east, like Motorway 7, are expected to be heavily congested.
Authorities are urging Songkran travelers to plan ahead, check traffic updates, and prepare for long journeys—especially on the way into Pattaya. Drivers are advised to fill up on fuel, fully charge electric vehicles, and take advantage of rest stops. Though traffic out of Bangkok appeared light on the morning of April 10, it’s expected to intensify rapidly as the holiday nears its peak.
With the mix of hot sun, pop-up storms, and packed roads, this year’s Songkran getaway is shaping up to be as intense as it is festive. Whether heading to Pattaya for a splash or simply a seaside escape, travelers are reminded: patience, sunscreen, and a full tank go a long way.
