Holidaymakers hit the road as tolls waived on five expressways—Pattaya prepares for a Songkran surge with massive celebrations and packed hotels.

PATTAYA, Thailand – As the Songkran holiday approaches, traffic out of Bangkok is ramping up, with coastal cities like Pattaya expecting a major influx of travelers seeking sun, sand, and spirited water fights. To ease the journey and reduce costs for holidaymakers, the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) is offering free access to five major expressways during the Songkran 2025 period.

According to Surachet Laopoolsuk, Governor of EXAT, this move aligns with the government’s policy to promote safe, affordable travel across the country during the Thai New Year festivities. The fee exemptions are designed to reduce financial burdens on travelers, ease traffic congestion, and lower energy consumption and pollution.

Free Expressway Access:

From April 11 (00:01) to April 17 (24:00)7 days

Burapha Withi Expressway (Bang Na – Chonburi)

Kanchanaphisek Expressway (Bang Phli – Suksawat)

From April 13 (00:01) to April 15 (24:00)3 days

Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway (First Stage Expressway)

Si Rat Expressway (Second Stage Expressway)

Udon Ratthaya Expressway (Bang Pa-in – Pak Kret)

This initiative is expected to support the anticipated mass departure from Bangkok to popular destinations like Pattaya, Hua Hin, and the eastern seaboard, where Songkran celebrations will be held in full swing.

Pattaya, in particular, is gearing up for massive water festivities across Beach Road, Walking Street, and Naklua, with the peak celebration traditionally landing on April 19. Hotels and local businesses are already seeing a surge in bookings, with many accommodations nearly full.

The toll-free expressway policy is part of the Ministry of Transport’s broader campaign, “Songkran – Festival of Happiness, Safe Travels Everywhere in Thailand,” ensuring not only cost savings but also smoother, safer holiday journeys for all.
