RATCHABURI, Thailand – San Camillo Hospital in Ratchaburi has dismissed a doctor following an internal investigation into a case involving an alleged medical misdiagnosis that resulted in a patient’s death from ischemic heart disease. The hospital announced on July 19, that the doctor’s employment had been terminated with immediate effect after investigators found that the physician had used inappropriate language when communicating with the patient and the patient’s family. The case gained public attention after the family alleged that a male patient died after receiving an incorrect diagnosis and that the doctor’s remarks toward the patient’s wife were inappropriate. In an official statement, the hospital said it had previously ordered the doctor to stop performing duties while awaiting the results of fact-finding procedures by the hospital and relevant external agencies, including the Medical Council of Thailand.
Following its review, the hospital said it found that the doctor’s communication with the patient and relatives was indeed impolite. The hospital determined that the conduct violated workplace regulations requiring staff to avoid behaviour that damages the hospital’s reputation and to treat patients respectfully. The hospital also cited professional medical ethics requiring doctors to communicate and treat patients with courtesy and respect. As a result, San Camillo Hospital decided to remove the doctor from duty effective July 19. The hospital expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and said it remains ready to provide assistance and support to those affected by the incident. The hospital added that it accepts public feedback and suggestions as part of efforts to improve medical services and maintain public trust.
The case came to public attention after the teacher shared her account online following her husband’s death on July 17. She said he was refused an ECG despite showing warning signs associated with a possible heart problem and was sent home before later collapsing and dying that evening. An autopsy found blockages in two coronary arteries, while the grieving wife has called for a full investigation and accountability to prevent similar incidents from happening to other families.
