PATTAYA, Thailand – The ambitious Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Capital City project is moving closer to reality, with construction expected to begin in 2028 following strong interest from private investors during the first market sounding session. More than 100 private-sector companies attended the market sounding event on July 21 to explore investment opportunities in the first phase of the EEC Capital City (EECiti), a planned smart city development covering more than 6,168 rai in Huai Yai, Banglamung district, Chonburi.
The project follows approval by the EEC Policy Committee in June for the launch of a public-private partnership (PPP) bidding process in early 2028, with an estimated investment value of more than 72 billion baht for essential infrastructure and central utilities. The first phase will focus on developing major systems including electricity and clean energy, water supply, water management, waste management, green spaces and public landscaping to support the future city.
The EEC Capital City is planned as a multi-zone smart urban development featuring a central business district (CBD), medical hub, international education and research district, BCG business zone, service and logistics areas, and mixed-use developments. A key attraction will be a planned World-Class Entertainment Hub, featuring entertainment facilities, a sports complex, a large convention center, shopping centers and hotels designed to attract both domestic and international visitors.
The PPP bidding process is expected to open in early 2028, with infrastructure construction beginning the same year. Some parts of the World-Class Entertainment Hub are scheduled to open in 2030, while the full city development is expected to be completed in phases by 2037. The EEC Capital City is part of Thailand’s long-term strategy to create a new economic center in the Eastern region, combining investment, technology, tourism, healthcare, education and modern urban living.
