Thailand’s military leadership calls for nationwide readiness and coordination as shifting U.S. trade policies raise regional security and economic concerns.

BANGKOK, Thailand – New U.S. trade policies prompt national security agencies to closely monitor economic impact and strengthen domestic preparedness.

The Thai Defense Council has acknowledged the potential impact of shifting U.S. tariff policies and instructed military branches to monitor developments closely while preparing internal strategies. The move reflects concerns over the economic implications for Southeast Asia, which stands to be significantly affected by intensified trade tensions between global powers.

Following a recent mobile session of the Defense Council at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, officials were briefed on regional vulnerabilities linked to U.S. policy shifts. The council emphasized the importance of maintaining strategic balance amid growing economic competition between the United States and China, urging readiness at all levels to manage potential disruptions.

The council also reviewed progress on 11 areas of military development previously assigned to each service branch. Officials highlighted the need to coordinate with relevant government agencies to assess and anticipate the full scope of upcoming U.S. policy changes.

In terms of military procurement, it was clarified that any defense negotiations would be based on Thailand’s actual needs. The Thai side will not commit to acquiring military equipment unless it aligns with national priorities, despite potential interest from the U.S. in using such deals as negotiation leverage.

Regarding the legal case filed by the Third Army Region against American academic Dr. Paul Chambers under Section 122, it was reaffirmed that the issue is being handled strictly through legal channels. The government stressed that this case will not become a bargaining chip in diplomatic talks and reiterated that the judiciary must ensure fairness to all involved. The situation has not influenced the timeline or conditions for upcoming trade negotiations with the United States.

Authorities called for caution in public discourse and media reporting on this sensitive matter, warning that inaccurate messaging could damage the country’s international standing. Officials emphasized that the government is fully aware of the stakes and committed to safeguarding Thailand’s national interests through a firm, law-based approach. (NNT)
