Pattaya Sports Club
Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Tue,
Morn & Lek
Brother D increased their first place lead
to four points after winning all four points from Indiana. Tue Pettae bowled
games of 180, 189 and 202 for a 571 series and Konrad Foerg added a 502
series for Brother D.
Green Tree only managed to win one game from Mitt In 2012
but it was enough to move them into second place. Joe Ferral led Mitt In
2012 with a 532 series and Yeow Gale added a 518 series. Tukata Thompson
bowled a 508 for Green Tree.
Bavaria won three points thanks to Dave Dolle who is on
the Canada Team. Dave who said his right shoulder was hurting decided to
bowl left handed and bowled a great 298 series. If he would have bowled but
asked that his score not be counted his team would have won three. Lek
Reaper bowled a 255 game, 567 series and Antero Ronkainen had a 537 series
for Canada.
Kran Nielsen bowled games of 194, 171 and 181 for a 546
series and Morn Mack had a 201 game, 516 series, to lead Caf้ Kronborg to a
four point win over VFW Post 9876.
Tui Amphanon had a 514 series for VFW.

Seil Revels lights up Pattana
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, June 18, Eastern
Star - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Dick Heaney (14) 36pts
2nd Tomas Nilsson (10) 35pts
3rd Rod Crosswell (12) 34pts
4th Benny Hansen (25) 31pts
A smaller group took on the challenge at the premier Baan
Chang course, no doubt due to the lingering doubts as to the playability of
the course. We discovered, as on the last visit, that the course generally
was in good shape but was marred generally by the condition of the greens
which were slow and bumpy and well below the excellent level that was the
norm several years ago. It is noted that the Chairman’s Cup is due to be
played over the course in the near future, which hopefully will ensure that
the condition improves soon.
Dick Heaney.
Dick Heaney led in the group that in spite of the lower
numbers still produced some god scores with a level handicap round that was
sufficient by the slimmest of margins to claim his first win of this trip,
which has included several other rounds with other groups in the area.
Tomas Nilsson at last appears to be over his jet lag and
is beginning to play to his normal level and a slightly lower than handicap
round was enough for him to take second spot ahead of Rod Crosswell by a
single shot. Rod is still showing he is competitive even after his recent
two stroke reduction in handicap.
Benny Hansen rounded out the podium some three shots
further back in fourth.
Apologies are owed to the day’s winner Dick Heaney as the
opportunity was lost to take his picture for publication before he left for
Phuket.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back
Dick Heaney, Shane Heavey, Vince Gras and Ron Kerslake.
Wednesday, June 20, Pattana A & B - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Seil Revels (5) 38pts
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (26) 38pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (12) 37pts
4th Don Everett (21) 36pts
5th Tom McCarthy (20) 36pts
Back to Pattana again now that the pricing has become
competitive with many and better than some of the higher quality courses in
the area, and now that the extensive ground keeping work that had been
undertaken over the last few months, has been competed it is a real pleasure
to play there.
Seil Revels.
With memories of a very hard day playing from the white
tees, especially for the higher handicappers, it was decided that the par
73, which includes one par 6, should be played from the yellow tees, which
at approximately 6500 yards is still a reasonable test for players of all
levels of handicap. In the event the CSS for the day went down with many of
the competitors playing within the two stroke margin of the standard
scratch.
Seil Revels did just enough after a completing the front
nine in a scorching gross level par to hold off Terry Hodgkiss and won the
count back with a better 17 to 15 as Terry faded badly after going out in
five under handicap and looking like the winner, but just three points on
the first three holes of the back nine effectively put paid to his chances
for the top spot. But Seil was also not without his problems as the tricky
par three twelfth hole also spoiled his inward half as he failed to score on
it but recovered his composure to take the win with a steady finish to the
round.
Yasuo Suzuki overcame his fatigue to take third place by
just one shot behind the leading pair following his strenuous activities
with his tour leadership responsibilities, these having taken their toll on
his stamina day and night over the last couple days as the tourists try and
fit two month’s fun, games, golf and food into a fourteen day period.
Tom McCarthy just lost the count back for fourth place to
Don Everett as Don finished well to win by 17 to 15 after Tom had started
the day with seven points from the first two holes with a par and a birdie
and had fourteen points after just five holes but even amassing six
3-pointers and a four pointer, was not quite good enough on the day with so
many other good scores in contention.
Don Everett cleaned out the second division rollover 2’s
pool while Masanori Takano did the same in the first division.
Prior to the prize giving there were welcome backs for
Tom McCarthy, Jim Lloyd and “Yakayuno Tours” made up of Kaneo Watanabe,
Yukio Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Nakagomi led by their intrepid guide Yasuo.
Friday, June 22, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Shuichi Kodaka (17) 38pts
2nd Yasuo Suzuki (12) 37pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (26) 37pts
4th Alwyne Burley (18) 36pts
5th Jens Gunnarsson (14) 35pts
5th Rodney Hayes (14) 34pts
The always popular Emerald course proved so once again as
the second visit in the week to Baan Chang produced the largest field, with
just one more being needed to form two divisions.
The course was also found to have recovered from the
recent coring of the greens which have now returned to normal with good
holding abilities whilst being fast and flat.
Shuichi Kodaka ensured that he will be going down a
stroke in handicap for the second week in succession as a two under handicap
return shot him to the top once more to beat of the challenges of the
chasing pair by a single shot as he followed a strong two under handicap
outward half with a solid level return on the inward nine.
Yasuo Suzuki again showed his strength in taking second
place with an excellent back nine of four under handicap, after going out
very slowly following a very late night spent in the company of Mr Chivas
and the tour fanatics, which translated into a win in a count back by 22 to
15 over Terry Hodgkiss.
Once again Terry could not keep the round on track and
following an outstanding front nine of four under handicap he slipped badly,
only being able to take three points from the last three holes and was left
ruing yet another fine opportunity missed.
Alwyne Burley never does much to excite the crowds but is
always there or thereabouts, which he was again in taking fourth place with
a level handicap round which consigned Jens Gunnarsson into fifth, one back
and Rodney Hayes into sixth at two back but looking good on his return to
golf in Pattaya.
Rod Crosswell had the sole 2 in the first division while
Shuichi Kodaka and Terry Hodgkiss shared the second division pool.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member
Lincoln Burke and a welcome back for Rodney Hayes who had been around for a
couple of weeks but had been unable to play due to a severe chest infection.
There were farewells for Shane Heavey, Ron Kerslake and
Vince Gras all returning to Oz tired but happy after playing every day and
every night during their weeklong stay.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the
course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you
should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Taylor made at Bangpra
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
What better way of beginning a golfing week than going
with many friends to Bangpra to play a stableford event on the exquisite
course! The Pattaya Golf Society did just that on Monday, 18th June and
found an empty course in excellent condition. Currently the club is
returfing the regular play tee boxes so many of the teeing areas were beyond
those which are normally used, making the course long but it was
nevertheless a fine experience with good paced greens.
In third place was a trio of golfing expertise comprising
of Seil Revels, Joe Niisato and Ken Grimes, all recent winners and they
found 30 points was enough to secure the position. In second place was Dave
Edwards with 31 points, still finding his golfing feet in Pattaya and the
day belonged to Robbie Taylor, his 37 points being an excellent reward for
some accurate driving.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Boss’s free beer draw
was won by Bryan Barrell who coincidentally also picked up the Booby Bevy
for the low score of the day. An excellent start to any golfing week.

From one extreme to the other
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, June 19, Rayong
Country Club – Stableford
The course here could not be described as good or well
cared for, not by any stretch of the imagination, but as the saying goes,
“you get what you pay for” so no real complaints. We played front 9 back 9
and overall winner with no NTP’s.
The front 9 was won by Owen Walkley (12) with an
impressive 21 points. The back 9 went to Brian Maddox (20) with 15 and the
overall saw Owen again finishing top with 35. Just can’t keep him off the
top spot (come back Jeff all is forgiven!)
Thursday, June 21, Phoenix – Stableford
At the other end of the scale from Rayong C.C. we have
the impressive Phoenix Golf Course in excellent condition, well cared for
and good value for money on sports day. We played Ocean and Lakes, only a
friendly game today and a few hold ups on the way round due to a few groups
in front playing very slow at times. I wont mention any nationalities as
most can guess.
Welcome back to one of our regulars Phil Waite on one of
his return trips from Australia. Hope to see more of our regulars returning
soon and new faces always welcome. Call 082 475 1307 for enquires or
bookings.

Noi tops the high scores at Phoenix
PSC 115th Monthly Golf Tournament
Report Nigel Cannon/
Photos William Macey
Friday, June 22, Phoenix Golf Club
When PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham plans a golf
tournament there is a lot of preparation involved, although there are
certain elements that are out of his control. Today however he had no
problems; the weather was fine and sunny with just a breeze to keep it
comfortable, the course –Ocean and Lake, was in excellent shape in all
departments, and the booking in and registration went smoothly. To end the
day – just wait!
50/50 winner. Alan Sullivan.
So Joe and Nigel made the quick early morning trip to
this local course to prepare for the arrival of the 91 players (including 13
ladies). All players arrived well in time for their round, although for some
reason there were a few who were late on the tee!
The rounds were just a shade over 4 hours which with a
large field was very welcome. There were some excellent scores with all
flight winners exceeding 40 points, and all places beating their handicap!
The low gross winner was Bob Watson with a fine 72 Gross.
In ‘A’ Flight, the ‘gentle giant’ Bob Newell (6) was in
top spot with 75 gross – 69 net, while Brian Parish (13) led ‘B’ Flight home
with 42 points.
The early bird … Don Lehmer (20) arrived 90 minutes
before his tee time and returned with 43 points to top ‘C’ Flight. It was
another 43 points for Tom Cotton (22) to take ‘D’ Flight.
Noi Emmerson (15) had the best score of the day with 44
points to be top lady – again!
Service with a smile.
With this course being very local, many had the
opportunity to go home before going to Lewiinski’s for the buffet and
presentation. Colin Davis and his team always put on an excellent buffet –
today once again they came up with both European and Thai food with a number
of choices to suit all tastes. The service was its usual friendly and
efficient manner.
At the presentation, Nigel Cannon, as usual, called order
and expressed appreciation on behalf of all to the Lewiinski’s team. Nigel
then welcomed PSC President Tony Oakes who congratulated Joe on another
great tournament. Tony – who was re-elected President last Saturday - was
pleased that Joe, William and Nigel were to continue in their respective
roles for another year.
Joe expressed his appreciation to all players and
underlined the comments by Nigel on the buffet. Joe reminded all that the
PSC had made some minor adjustments to the local rules and ‘card’ sized
copies are available from the PSC office and golfing venues and were also on
the PSC web-site. The 116th tournament will be at Treasure Hill on Friday
20th July – sign-up sheets are at the PSC office.
Nigel then announced the winners while Joe presented the
prizes, which was followed by the lucky draw. Finally this month’s 50/50
winner was Alan Sullivan.
Full results are on the PSC web-site and on the club
notice board.
Each one a winner.
Didn’t we do well.
Smiles all around.

Tuesday, June 19, Laem Chabang – Stableford
Tuesday saw TRGG start off this week’s competitions by
returning to Laem Chabang (C and B courses) after a long absence and I think
the whole group would agree that they found it in outstanding condition. In
my opinion it is one of the best presented courses in the Pattaya region and
I am sure we shall be playing there again in the near future.
Rob Herald, playing off sixteen, was taking a break from
his teaching duties and won the competition with 38 points, followed by Ted
Senior (12) with 36pts and Masa Takana (6) taking third spot on count back
with 32.
Thursday, June 21, Phoenix – Stableford
Thursday was the group’s weekly visit to Phoenix (Ocean
and Lakes) where Amphan North destroyed the rest of the field. Playing off a
thirteen handicap she walked the competition with an outstanding 39 points.
Rob Herald (16) was the best of the rest with 34pts and old stager Alan
Evans (23) grabbed third spot with 33.
It was good to see Roger Wilkinson playing again after
recovering from a hand injury sustained in an accident on his motorcycle.
Saturday, June 23, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
The weekend saw a small field take on Mountain Shadow,
always a tricky course to get the better of and the scores returned
reflected this. Seil Revels, playing off four, won with 32 points after
beating David Booth, playing off thirteen, on count back.
Good luck to all you golfing enthusiasts for the coming
week!

Ashman tames the greens at Bangpra
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, June 18, Treasure
Hill – Stableford
It was millionaire’s golf again today as we arrived at
Treasure Hill to find that we had the course to ourselves. This course has
improved tremendously over the past year, and today it was in excellent
condition, with the greens being some of the best we’ve played on in recent
weeks.
Perhaps the course is a little too daunting for some,
being one of the toughest in the area, but it always provides a good test of
golf, and most players struggle to better their handicap here.
We had a brief ten minute shower of rain on the 14th
hole, but other than that, conditions were ideal. Sean Murphy continued his
run of consistent form to win the competition ahead of Dave Ashman.
1st Sean Murphy (14) 33pts
2nd Dave Ashman (14) 32pts
3rd Geoff Parker (13) 31pts
Near Pins: Dave Ashman and Sean Murphy (2).
Wednesday, June 20, Bangpra – Stableford
Golf in Thailand doesn’t get better than this; as we
arrived at Bangpra to find that once again we had the course virtually to
ourselves. The weather was near perfect again with a light breeze keeping
the temperature down, and no sign of rain on the horizon.
Work is being done re-turfing many of the tee boxes,
which meant in many cases that the tees were up to 50 yards further back
than normal, and two of the par threes were almost 200 yards into the
breeze.
Today the greens were even slicker than normal, producing
numerous three putts and some choice language as the ball rolled
relentlessly down the slopes. Dave Ashman learned an early lesson on the
first green as his putt rolled fifteen feet past the hole, but lessons
learned produce good results, and he went on to produce the best score of
the day.
1st Dave Ashman (14) 33pts
2nd Geoff Parker (13) 31pts
3rd Barry Murnin (14) 29pts
Near Pins: Sean Murphy and Paul Edgar
Friday, June 22, Emerald – Medal
There was only a small contingent of Bunker Boys today,
with a group of regulars playing in the monthly PSC competition.
Paul Edgar, playing only his second game since his return
from UK took advantage of the reduced field to win the honours on the day
ahead of PJ Redmond. Sean Murphy, playing his last game before returning to
Ireland, was in third place, giving a final boost to his points total for
the Golfer of the Month title. Sean and Dave Ashman are now tied on 53
points, and Dave has three games left to secure the necessary extra point,
but close contenders Barry Murnin and Geoff Parker will make it is difficult
as possible for him, in what has become a very close four horse race.
1st Les Burns (28) net 71
2nd Dave Ashman (15) net 71
3rd Barry Murnin (15) net 74
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya
3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and
a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For
more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email [email protected].

Terry wins on count
back at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
The top three pose for a
photo outside the Blue Sky Bar.
Sunny weather greeted us on our arrival at Emerald
Golf Course for the weekly game of golf with the Backyard Golf Society.
8 players this week with 7 in all competitions and on arriving at the
first tee our friendly starter was subject to severe abuse as he decided
to put a five-ball out in front of us. Not the best thing to do with a
bunch of hungover guys and I am guessing he will not be doing it again
anytime in the near future!
For the third week in a row we had a withdrawal
halfway into the round, this time it was Mike who suffered from an
attack of stomach cramps; yet again no admission of alcohol abuse which
leads me to wonder whether the society as a whole has a problem!
Back in the clubhouse and after suffering through our
slowest round of the year it was nice to sit down, have a beer and find
out who won the money.
Terry C. won the stableford competition on count back
over Andy Oz with 33 points and the skin results were as follows: Kit
(6), Terry C (4), John Mc (3), JJ (1), and Mike (1) with 3 rollovers for
next week. Nearest the pin was also rolled over with no one managing to
hit the green (maybe we all should have walked off!)
After prize giving everyone, apart from Mike, headed
off to BC for a few beers and to commiserate with Darren as he heads
back home on Sunday.

North doubles up
IPGC golf from The Links
Sunday, June 19, Green
Valley – Stableford
A full fixture list this week for the first time in a
while saw a small field travel to Green Valley. As usual at this time of
year, we were able to tee off a little early, and the pace of play was
excellent until we ran into a very slow four-ball around the 14th
hole. The course is beginning to show signs of wear and tear, and the greens
were very bumpy, taking a long time to recover from their not so recent
coring.
Visiting Swede Thomas Nilsson took the honours today,
coming back in a very impressive level gross to beat Joe McArdle 23 to 18 on
the back nine, after both had carded 39 points. Peter Master finished third
on 34 points.
Thomas also scored the only 2 of the day, to scoop the
pot.
1st Thomas Nilsson (8) 39pts
2nd Joe McArdle (13) 39pts
3rd Peter Masters (9) 34pts
Tuesday, June 21, Treasure Hill – Stableford
16 players made the journey up to Treasure Hill today, to
tackle this tough course off the shorter yellow tees, a decision made due to
the handicap profile of the field. This was my first ever visit, and overall
I was very impressed. The course was in excellent condition, and the layout
every bit as good as I’ve heard. The only downside were the greens, which,
although running exceptionally true, were painfully slow.
Conditions were cool and overcast, with a slight breeze,
almost perfect conditions for good scoring. With the course almost empty,
the pace of play was good throughout, and the first group finished in a
little over 3ฝ hours
Aussie duo, Shane Heavey and Jim Lloyd, holidaying
together, picked up the minor places, Shane taking third by virtue of a 21
to 15 back nine, after both scored a respectable 33 points. Jon Batty,
scoring better than he played, somehow managed 36 points which is often
enough to win here, despite playing generally scrappy golf. Victory however
went to Cliff North, back from his latest mining expedition, who scored an
excellent 39 points off his 20 handicap.
The 2’s went to Cliff North, Wayne Harmon, Yukio Kikuchi
and Kaneo Watanabe.
1st Cliff North (20) 39pts
2nd Jon Batty (8) 36pts
3rd Shane Heavey (19) 33pts
4th Jim Lloyd (28) 33pts
Thursday, June 23, Burapha - Stableford
This was a late addition to the fixture list at the
request of our visiting Japanese four-ball, and was one that proved popular,
with almost the same group as Tuesday making the short journey. This was our
first visit in a long time, as it not somewhere we usually choose to play
due to the compulsory use of carts, but on sports day, for 1600 baht all
inclusive, it represents decent value for money, for what is a top quality
course.
We were allocated the A&B nines, and after playing from
the shorter tees on Tuesday, decided to take on the challenge of the blue
tees, playing a little over 6700 yards. This proved a good decision, as
although fairly long for most, the course is wide open, and the firm
fairways provided plenty of run on the ball. The greens were a good pace and
ran very true, proving a dream for strong putters.
There was a fairly strong breeze throughout, but the
standard of scoring was generally good, with eleven of the sixteen players
scoring 30+ points (so where Joe Peters’ 20 came from, I don’t know)!
Nick Odnoral and Jon Batty battled out for the minor
prizes on 34 points, Nick earning bragging rights after scoring 17 points on
the back nine. Ted Morris, no doubt grumbling over the choice of tees when
stood on the first, put his dismay behind him, to card a very creditable 36
points for second place – long courses don’t always just suit the young’uns
Ted! Victory, however, again went to Cliff North, playing off a 20 handicap
for the last time, scoring an excellent 37 points.
There were no ‘2’s, and with our regular Sunday fixture
being moved due to a junior competition, the pot rolls over to the
challenging St Andrews par 3’s this coming Sunday.
1st Cliff North (20) 37pts
2nd Ted Morris (15) 36pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (16) 34pts
4th Jon Batty (8) 34pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao
at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Rayong Green Valley every
Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule
of courses can be found on the IPGC website www.ipgc.org.

Sanders & Cunningham – the prize pair at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Greg Kennedy (left) & Bruce
Campbell (right) took 1st and 2nd at Khao Kheow.
Monday, June 18, Burapha -
Stableford
28 Outbackers travelled to Burapha to play the A and B
courses on an overcast, cool and very windy day for Thailand. The course was
as per usual in great condition but the rough is still as brutal as ever so
the secret is to hit fairways and greens. The course was very lightly booked
so we had it to ourselves and the last group completed their round in a
leisurely 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Welcome back to Simon Spaulding and his group, including
Nelly and also welcome back to Gray Hogg.
We had two divisions with four places in each plus the
‘2’s.
Division 2 winner with the best score of the day was Pete
Stonebridge with 39 points on his 16 handicap from in second, Steve Milne
with 38 points, also on 16 handicap, third went to Nelly Stoer (18) with 36
points and in fourth was John O’Keefe (16) with 34 points.
Division 1 was won by Mark McDonald (3) with 35 points
who beat Kev Reid (12) on a count back; in third was Gary Hogg (7) with 34
points and fourth was Simon Spaulding with 33 points, playing off scratch
and beating Paul Greenaway also on count back.
There were two ‘2’s for the day to Nelly Stoer on hole A3
and Chris Wright on hole B3.
Friday winners, from left:
Joachim Oestreicher, Geoff Christie & Gary Saunders.
Div A (0-12)
1st Mark McDonald (3) 35pts
2nd Kev Reid (12) 35pts
3rd Gary Hogg (7) 34pts
4th Simon Spaulding (0) 33pts
Div B (13+)
1st Pete Stonebridge (16) 39pts
2nd Steve Milne (16) 38pts
3rd Nelly Stoer (18) 36pts
4th John O’Keefe (16) 34pts
Monday, June 18, Khao Kheow – Stableford
A better sized field than of late, with 12 Outbackers
here at Khao Kheow today, perhaps some sign that the course is returning to
reasonable condition at last.
A & B nines were the call as C remains closed and three
players excelled themselves as anyone who can score 36pts or more round here
off the yellows can give themselves a pat on the back. Geoff Christie, one
of the Kiwi lads, fired a marvellous 78 gross to collect 36pts but found
himself only in third place as two newbies from Sydney, Bruce and Greg stole
the show, both with amazing back nines of 24 and 22 points respectively.
Well done you guys and we’ve cut you to 21 apiece, just to slow you down a
bit.
There were two ‘2’s from Sel Wegner and Bruce Campbell.
1st Bruce Campbell (22) 36pts
2nd Greg Kennedy (22) 36pts
3rd Geoff Christie (6) 36pts
4th Tony McDonough (14) 34pts
Tuesday, June 19, Laem Chabang – Stableford
22 players at Laem Chabang to play the C course and the
recently reopened B course. The course was heavily booked but we teed off on
time and the pace of play was a lot better than the last few weeks but still
took just on four and a half hours to complete the 18 holes. The course was
great, especially the greens, very fast but true, and the B course was in
good condition considering the renovations it has undergone.
We had two divisions with three places in each division
plus the ‘2’s.
Division 2 was won by Murray Hart with the best score of
the day of 37 points off his 15 handicap from Greg Kennedy off a 21
handicap. Adam Oyston and Tim Knight, both off the same 17 handicap,
finished up third and fourth respectively via count back and both with 33
points.
Division 1 was won by Stephen Mann with 35 points off his
9 handicap, from John Warwick with 32 points, with third going to John Low
(12) with 30 points.
There were four ‘2’s for the day with two to Geoff
Christie on C8 and B8 and Stephen Mann and John Tunstall on also C8.
Finally, please sign up as early as possible for Laem
Chabang to avoid disappointment; as it is proving very difficult to get
extra tee times.
Div A (0–14)
1st Steve Mann (9) 35pts
2nd John Warwick (13) 32pts
3rd John Low (12) 30pts
Div B (15+)
1st Murray Hart (15) 37pts
2nd Greg Kennedy (21) 33pts
3rd Adam Oyston (17) 33pts
Tuesday, June 19, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Just 8 Outbackers today playing the front nine twice;
fairways, bunkers and greens in good condition even if a little slow, but it
remained fine with a little breeze, making it a comfortable day to play.
Aussie Geoff Moodie (27) was in the top spot with 36
points, with organiser Chad - Barry Chadbourn (19) with 31 points in second
who beat Nigel Cannon (21) on count back.
There were no ‘2’s.
As we played we could see the tremendous amount of work
that is be undertaken on the back nine with many greens, fairways and tees
all dug up!
Finally, today we said goodbye for a few months to The
Colonel – Bob Pearce who is returning to the UK, but the Outback will be
here again next week, even if the Colonel can’t be, for another enjoyable
game at the very local course playing off whites then blue tees.
1st Geoff Moodie (27) 36pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (19) 31pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (21) 31pts
Wednesday, June 20, Siam Plantation – Stableford
We have now extended our number of groups each week to
five (20 Pax max) at Siam Plantation as the course is proving to be very
popular and why not, as the course is in great condition; the staff extend a
very warm welcome and the caddies are fantastic, together with an excellent
pace of play.
The 20 players started off on Pineapple (C) a little
earlier than our tee time on a very windy day which made for some very
challenging holes, but as ever it was a pleasure to play a great course like
this, the other nine being Sugarcane (A).
Sugar continued his friendly sparring with the Kiwis with
a win over the John & Dion pairing, carrying, or so he claims, the remaining
Kiwi, Geoff over the front nine – but as Sugar tired from the extra weight,
Geoff feeling refreshed and inspired came home with a resounding 37 gross
(20pts) to complete an emphatic win which we hear will be resumed on Friday
at Green Valley. Sugar ended up second overall with 36pts, to be beaten on
count back by Jim Bryan and newcomer to the Outback, Mike Missler took third
with 35pts on count back from Rosco.
There were four ‘2’s from; Mike Missler (A3), Sel Wegner
(A6) and Sugar got two on A6 and B7.
1st Jim Bryan (17) 36pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (16) 36pts
3rd Mike Missler (12) 35pts
4th Rosco Langoulant (13) 35pts
Wednesday, June 20, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Such is the popularity of Siam Plantation, our
alternative Wednesday course took a severe beating today with just five
players. Playing the A & B nines the course did not receive many approving
comments as the general opinion was very ordinary. The greens had been cored
and sanded but in an unusual front to back, half and half way, this week
being the turn of the front half, giving the ball little chance of bouncing
up to the pin on the soft cored area; right and left split coring of the
greens is more usual.
Elsewhere, the course was scruffy with some patches of
long rough grass not far from the greens so all in all the view is, we
shan’t be back there for a while.
Bob St. Aubin, playing in a 2-ball with Dennis Pelly, won
the day with 37pts.
1st Bob St. Aubin (14) 37pts
2nd Paul Bourke (8) 32pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (11) 29pts
Friday, June 22, Green Valley – Stableford
38 Outbackers at Green Valley, which once again proved to
be the most popular venue of the week. The course has recovered well from
the coring and sanding of the greens and the greens are nearly back to their
best. The new cart paths are almost completed so hopefully all the GUR will
shortly be repaired.
The course was in the process of being prepared for a
Junior Tournament on the weekend and there were a number of juniors playing
the course with their parents and coaches. Unfortunately some of the groups
that were practicing were playing two balls and held up all the groups
behind, with little care. It is unfortunate that whilst training the juniors
they don’t actually teach them the etiquette of golf as well … but then TIT.
Lovely overcast, cool and windy day which made for some
good scores on the day; the best coming from (and welcome back after a long
absence) Gary Saunders with a fine 39pts, which included three birdies on
the back nine, the 13th, 14th, &
17th.
Barnesy (Bob Barnes) bounced straight back to 13 from his
new 14 h’cap today after matching Gary’s 39pts only to lose on count back
whilst in Div A Geoff Christie carried on where he left off on Wednesday
with 38pts to win from a disappointed Dennis Pelly who lost out on count
back over the last six holes only, each having 20 on the back nine. Tubz
(Mark McDonald) took third with the day’s low gross of 75 (36pts).
The scores were a little lower in Div C with Joachim
getting the win on 34pts from his friend and newcomer to the Outback, Peter
Montanari (33).
The DeVere sponsored, Hidden Pairs was won by John
Cunningham & Gary Saunders.
There were five ‘2’s from Paul Bourke (9th),
Jan Eriksen, Capt’ Steve & Sunanta on the 12th and
Geoff Christie (16th).
Div A (0-11)
1st Geoff Christie (6) 38pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (11) 38pts
3rd Mark McDonald (3) 36pts
Div B (12-17)
1st Gary Saunders (15) 39pts
2nd Robert Barnes (14) 39pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (13) 36pts
Div C (18+)
1st Joachim Oestreicher (22) 34pts
2nd Peter Montanari (24) 33pts
3rd Jean Morel (18) 32pts
Pairs Results
1st Gary Saunders & John Cunningham

2nd Geoff Christie & Brian Maddox
44 pts
3rd Simon Kendall & Robert Barnes 42 pts.

Ken & Tom - winners at the Valley
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Tom Cotton, Peter
Blackburn & Ken Bernek.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 18, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
There were several new faces to be seen as we assembled
at The Growling Swan in readiness for the trip to the ever improving
Pleasant Valley Golf Course. Two minivans were necessary as only a few of
the 22 starters were travelling by car and the complimentary tea & coffee
was flowing as we chatted and introduced the newcomers.
We welcomed back my very good personal friend Dr Brian
Vale and Wayne Harman from my old Golf Club Gosnells in Perth Western
Australia. Walter Baechli had returned from his cycling tour of Morocco.
Newcomers Rick Field & Mick Sullivan from Dampier, Western Australia were
having a hit with us along with Tom Parry and the legendary Roundy from The
Roo Bar in Walking Street. I’d like to think they were all here to help me
celebrate my birthday but I’m sure it’s just that the word is getting around
that Growling Swan Golf is becoming more and more popular and is providing a
fun day of golf.
Sadly we were saying farewell to Eric “Judge” Black who
was returning to Geelong, Victoria after his 3 week holiday but we all know
that this semi-retired Pattaya devotee will be back in the blink of an eye.
Also good luck to Graham Buckingham who is taking a week off golf to compete
in the King’s Cup Scrabble Tournament in Bangkok.
We were able to depart the G.S. right on time at 8.30 am
and arrived at the course just 40 minutes later. Once more we were just
about the only ones there so were able to tee off at our leisure and the
first four ball got away 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.40 am.
The weather was great with not too much wind and the
threatening clouds above disappeared quickly as we took in the beauty of
this course which was in excellent condition. The greens appeared to be
somewhat slower than normal but were firm & true so bad putting could be the
only excuse for three putts or more.
We proceeded at a very good pace with no-one in front of
us and after a two hour first nine we took a ten minute drinks break before
the tenth tee. I managed to putt in for a birdie from just over the green on
the tenth after hitting a career best five wood second shot but alas that
was my only claim to fame for the day. Doc & Wayne were tiring during the
second nine after just 4 hours sleep but we battled on and completed the
round in four hours & ten minutes. Once again a very enjoyable round of golf
on a very good golf course in great “nick” with very good company.
We had 2 Grades with A Grade for handicaps 0 to 17 and B
Grade for 18 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pins on the four
par threes and longest first putts on the 9 th
& 18th greens. Many thanks to
Mike Gosden, Eric Black & Martin Todd for assisting with sponsorship of
these awards.
Scoring was quite good considering we were playing off
the blue tees and there were several golfers that played to their handicap
or better. The winner of A Grade with a score of 37 points was my old mate
Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek with 37 points. In an Aussie count back for
second & third on 35 points, Mike “Hunter” Gosden (19 point back nine) edged
out Stu “Heineken” Rifkin (16 point back nine) and newcomer Tom Parry was
fourth with 34 points.
Tom “T.C.” Cotton won the B Grade with a fine 38 points
and in another count back for second & third Bo Cardwell (17 point back
nine) finished just ahead of Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (16 point
back nine), both having 37 points. It was terrific to welcome to the podium
for the first time this trip Volker Buley who finished fourth with 36
points.

Newcomer Roundy managed to win the Compass Cap (awarded
for the worst score on the day) and Hunter once more escorted Deefa the Dog
around who collected many donations to charity from the ever generous
Growling Swan Golf group.
It was then back to The Growling Swan for a few hours and
several celebratory beers with much humor and merriment. Most of the group
there just about fell over when I rang the bell for my birthday and several
of us stayed for a considerable time whilst enjoying the very friendly
atmosphere and very affordable drink prices.
Thursday, June 21, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
We originally had 16 golfers signed up for the day’s golf
but an annoying “no show” brought it back to 15, meaning 3 four balls & 1
three ball. Poor old “Heineken” Stu Rifkin was laid up for a week with a
sore leg and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei was saving himself for the
PSC Member’s Tournament at Phoenix the following day.
We welcomed from Melbourne, Australia newcomers Simon
Spalding (scratch handicap), Nelly Stoer & John Tonstall and it was sadly
time to say farewell to our very good friend Volker Buley who will shortly
be returning to Germany after his 3 weeks in Pattaya with a promise that he
will back for a month in December. It was also good to have Mike Allidi, our
regular 2 handicapper back with us after recovering from his sprained ankle
and we were all looking forward to him playing in the same group as the
visiting scratch handicapper.
We gave the “no show” until our 8.30 am departure time to
turn up but then we departed on schedule and arrived at Mountain Shadow just
46 minutes later. It was yet again “millionaire’s golf” for us as the course
was very quiet and we were invited to tee off as soon as we were ready.
Our first four ball, which consisted of 2 current members
and 2 former members of Gosnells Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia, got
away fifteen minutes ahead of our booked time of 10.00 am and in perfect
weather with a bit of a breeze we kept a very good pace with no-one ahead of
us. The golf course was as usual in good shape although partial coring &
sanding of the greens meant tricky putting a lot of the time but I’m sure
they will be back to their high standard when we return next month.
Just under 2 hours was all it took to complete the front
nine and with a well earned drinks break after the 12 th
hole we finished the round in the good time of four hours & 10 minutes. With
the smallish field we had just the one Grade with five podium spots and
there were rewards for nearest long putts on holes nine & eighteen.
It was tough going on the day with just 1 golfer playing
better than their handicap and after some fairly ordinary golf of late your
writer managed to take advantage of his ever increasing handicap and won the
day with 37 points. One of our visitors from Melbourne, Nelly Stoer came
second just one point further back and Sandy Leiper was third with 34
points. In a count back for fourth & fifth places on 33 points Wayne Harman
(17 point back nine) edged out Ken Cornwall (16 point back nine).
1 st Peter

2 nd Nelly

3 rd Sandy

4 th Wayne

5 th Ken
Cornwall 33pts
Long Putts: 9 th
– Wayne Harman; 18th – Ken

It needed a count back to decide the Compass Cap winner
(awarded for the worst score of the day) and my very good friend Doc Vale
took the award from fellow Aussie Jerry Dobbs. Deefa the Dog was of course
present and paraded by Hunter resulting in many donations to charity from
our generous Growling Swan group.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 080 635 1386 or email to

Hewitt’s huge score
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s top three with staff
members from The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, June 19, Phoenix – Stableford
After the previous week’s poor scoring, where as usual I
open my big mouth saying that this course is now difficult, and when you
think it is safe to go in the water again, up pops Bill Hewitt, John Bartley
and Colin Gregg.
All three made the course look very tame indeed; Bill
Hewitt scoring 42 points to claim first place, with John Bartley scoring 40
points in second and me old Brummie mate, Colin Gregg scoring 39 points for
third spot.
After the poor scores on the last outing, Joris
Goetschalkx must have thought he would have a chance by scoring 36 points
from the 28 handicap allowed (maximum for us - his official handicap being
32). However, it is tough at the top and his 36 points was only in fourth
place but congratulations are in order for breaking the 100 barrier.
Only two near pins today and they went to John Bartley
and Giorgio Baccioli.
Lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts, The Relax Bar)
were awarded to Stuart Gordon, Sergio Volpi and Peter Wathall.
This week we will play our end of the month stroke play
tournament for the Trattoria Italiana voucher.
Although we are predominantly a members group we welcome
guests and our main criteria is that you have an official handicap of no
more than 28 and you are male. Playing in skirts is optional if you are that
way inclined, but you must play from the white tees.
Call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further details
regarding golf at Phoenix and sea fishing.

Elementary, my dear Watson
Steve Little at Pattana 8th of
June with his proof.
Steve Ellison
Monday, June 18, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Terry Johns (18) 44pts
2nd Ernie Hill (0) 40pts
3rd Max Scott (4) 35pts
Rayong Green Valley is coming back and all the recent
works there have paid off. The course is now once again in fine shape and
will only get better through the summer.
And so to our weekly contest at our regular Monday venue.
The visitors took all three podium places today so locals, watch out. It was
TGC partner John Emmerson’s turn to heard cats so midway through the
basketball we headed east on the 36 once again.
Terry Johns came in playing off 18 to shoot a great round
with 44 points at this lovely golf course. We haven’t had a score that high
since Brad Gearie was here a couple of months back, so a well deserved win
indeed. Terry is now off 16, as the handicapping system allows for.
Shooting a 40 is a great score also, but even better when
you are 4 under par off the stick, because as I recall, a scratch golfer
gets no shots, oui? Ernie Hill is a zero, which is quite a compliment in
this particular instance. Ern has been back in the States for the last
couple of years but remembers Green Valley quite well, I believe we can
assume by the scoring on the day. Well played Ernie, this was just practice
for a foray onto the Asian Tour events in the next few months, so good luck
man!
Wednesday, June 20, Siam Plantation (White tees) –
Stableford
1st Bob Watson (2) 36pts
2nd John Tunstall (4) 35pts
T3rd Mark Haffenden (0) 34pts
T3rd Brian Gavagan (5) 34pts
T3rd Gavin Wright (18) 34pts
A chance now to play like the pros with a summertime
visit to Siam Plantation. It is perfect, of course, although there were a
few blades of grass out of place on the 12th, pity. This is in the top 3
courses of the 20 that we play on our rota, so it was always going to be a
special day out.
The signup sheet of 5 tee times was full, even at the
2,350 Sports Day rate. We were overbooked, so chiseled a couple of places
from Dr, John who kindly carried the overflow with his slots that allowed
all 25 golfers to get out and play. After a TGC breakfast we set out for the
grueling 20 minute drive with Diego leading the lads in our minibus.
The high rollers for the day had a great time and we
arrived an hour early to take advantage of the magnificent practice facility
there.
Bob Watson tamed this great course with 36 points, the
only golfer on the day to play to his handicap.
John Tunstall came in one behind with 35 but there were a
trio of golfers on 34 points. The decision was made by Diego that Gavin,
Mark and Brian should all have some of those “Handsome Man Vouchers” so
that’s the way it went and no count back for today.
See our July golf schedule on our website and make note
that we are playing Siam Old Course next month, so come out and join us for
Plantation’s sister course on Tuesday the 24th. Thanks go to Diego Wells for
working the clipboard for today’s golf and join him on Sundays for P.S.C.
softball at high noon!
Note: The Kabinburi Road Trip is confirmed for 17 &
18 July, so sign up now!
The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out.

Jan’s new putting
aid works a treat
The Blue Moose Golf Group
Monday, June 18, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
Our first outing of the week saw the players take on
Pattaya Country Club. The weather was very cooperative and the course was in
good shape. The maintenance crew is still working on the tee boxes so
duffers had to add an extra 10 yards on #5 or hit the water.
Tuesday’s top two, Janathorn,
left, with Oye St. Laurent.
Jan, who eventually won, was caught putting with her cell
phone locked between her chin and shoulder, talking to Noy Murphy and she
holed the putt, go figure. It was definitely ladies day, with Janathorn
carding a 35 and Oye St. Laurent also carding a 35, however, Oye lost on the
count back. Rich Murphy was close to the ladies, carding a 34 for third.
The group retired to Caddy Shack II for some liquid
refreshment and snacks before heading out to other venues and coming to rest
at the Blue Moose.
Thursday, June 21, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Thursday found the Blue Moose group teeing off again at
Phoenix Country Club and they were lucky to get off when they did, ahead of
several groups of players from the big “K” who are usually very slow moving
players.
The course was in excellent condition and once again the
weather gods prevailed with an overcast sky.
Back at the Blue Moose Sports Bar, cards were tallied and
coming in with 35 points were Larry Emerson, Matt Millar and Dale Murphy.
Both Matt and Dale lost to Larry on the count back with Matt besting Dale,
again on the count back.
Picture was taken and sandwich material, sausage bits and
crackers were provided to all players and a hanger-on, namely the
photographer.
Thursday winner Larry Emerson,
left, with runner-up Matt Millar.

He Haw, He Haw,
it’s the Donkey
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, June 17, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Claude Harder (13) 41pts
2nd Bob Newell (15) 41pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (16) 43pts
2nd Dale Shier (14) 41pts
Near Pins: No 4 Mark Wood; No 9 Simon Spalding; No 12
Colin Davis; No 16 Bob Newell
The man of the match was none other than Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis who outraced a host of 41 points with his award winning 43
points. It seems that he has shook off the bout of colic that had him
sidelined last week.
Sunday winners Colin and
Claude.
Right on the Donkey’s well rounded hoofs was Dale Shier
with 41 points while Steve Little’s fine 39 points was not required.
Claude ‘Santa’ Harder and ‘Broad more’ Bob went head to
head on 41 points in the premier flight which saw Claude in his “I’m not
giving anything away today mood”, as Broad more was issued a recall for more
treatment. Mike Craighead’s 38 points was also not required.
The Donkey, and Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer split the 2s
pot.
Monday, June 18, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
1st Thierry Petrement (10) 33pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 32pts
Now you probably wonder about the title of this week’s
article. Colin is not known as the “the Donkey” for any anatomical reason,
but rather, that he has the ability to play like his nickname and still
manage to place nearly every day. I will give him due credit for his fine
play on Sunday with 43 points, but come on show some respect for the game,
nicking the silver spot with 32 points!
Thierry Petrement, a much respected player off his 10
handicap, took the man of the match with a mere 33 points; must have been
the long ride out!
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover on Wednesday
Wednesday, June 20, St Andrews - Stableford
1st Stuart Brown (26) 37pts
2nd Kevin Stewart (28) 35pts
3rd Colin Davis (16) 33pts
I have said it before, St Andrews has its detractors but
it provides a great test for those willing to take up the challenge. A small
but talented low season crowd did just that and was led home by Stuart Brown
with a rock solid 37 points. Stuart was also the only competitor to better
his handicap. He was closely followed up the podium steps by Kevin Brown two
strokes adrift. The Donkey did just enough (please refer to Monday’s
article) as his 33 points rounded out the flight.
No player carded a 2 so a double rollover on Friday
Friday, June 1, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Hack (13) 38pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 31pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (18) 31pts
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1,
Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us
just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.

Phillips on the podium at last
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s winners, with Keith
Phillips, 3rd right, wearing the biggest smile.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 19, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
This looked like being our biggest turnout of the ‘low
season’, however as happens quite often, on the morning we had a well above
average numbers of ‘no shows’, but even so we had a full list. So into cars
and down the road, or up if Bangkok happens to be ‘up’ because that is the
way we go. We were soon at the course and Alan and I were allowed to open
our eyes, closed through fear, as we went with Mashi. Mashi knows just about
every shortcut to every course and some of them are just a touch dicey!
This course here is developing quite nicely and it seems
that every time we go it gets a little bit better. Having decided to play
the ‘Blues’, we got under way in a strong wind that seemed to change
direction quite often. Playing off the Blues on this day proved to be quite
exciting as not only was it difficult, but as many tees were being reworked
we played quite often with them next to the Black Tees. Mind, in the wind it
just added to the excitement for some. However this course is not the most
difficult around and with the fairways in good condition, the rough
generally not too bad, and the greens fast and a bit tricky, we got around
in good humour.
The changing rooms are not bad, the showers pretty good
and the towels are snowy white and fluffy, so having a shower here is a good
experience. Then into the restaurant, which is quite large and has a good
view over the last holes of the golf course. Mind, although cheap, I did not
find the food particularly tasty, rather average.
Back into the cars and onto Route 7, where it soon became
apparent that there had been an accident ahead, and as the oncoming traffic
also seemed to be at a halt it appeared it was a major one. I noticed on the
oncoming lane there was a car with a flat roof and a trailer, being readied
to be towed away, and blow me if in the middle of the road on our side was a
big boat, no water. We spent a long time wondering what had happened,
however once past the boat the road cleared and we were soon back
It was soon on with the results and even with the hold up
on Route 7 we were still able to get under way at the normal time. In the A
Flight, 0 to 17, the winner with a great round was Mashi Kaneta, ahead of
Alan Sullivan in second with 36 points and Derek Brook in third with 35
points.
The winner in the B Flight was Barry Elphick with a fine
round of 40 points, he is playing well at the moment, and then it was
everyone’s favourite occurrence as Keith Phillips made his once a year,
maybe not even that, visit to the podium in second with 34 points. Keith
always plays on a Tuesday and is very rarely in the results, but here he
even won a near pin as well, his first ever at Bert’s. In third was Graham
Buckingham with 33 points.
So it was then time to let Keith buy me a beer or two.
T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Bob Watson, Keith Phillips, Kike Gaussa, Mashi
Kaneta.

Howett finds gold at the rainbow
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, June 18, Phoenix -
Rainbow Stableford
Another fun game this month sponsored by the rollover
kitty, an individual stableford round for two divisions with each person
selecting six red, six white and six blue tees to play from during the
round. In addition to this there was also a pairs competition where the two
scores were added together at the end of the round, irrespective of which
tees each partner played off.
Treasure Hill winners, the Oz
boys Steve Armstrong and Ian Plummer.
The Mountain nine is shut now for renovation so it was
Lakes and the Ocean today.
It was a game of logic, standing on each hole and then
selecting which tee to play from. The cut was 6-17 and 18 plus and with a
phenomenal 46 points Rodney Howett won division 2 ahead of Ken Miller in
second some 9 points behind and in third position was Joe Kubon with 36.
Chris Voller was the winner in division 1 with 40 points,
Al Keith took second with 38 and Lindsay Phillips beat Tony Barritt for
third on a 16/13 back six count back after they both scored 21 on the back
nine and 37 overall.
The first three groups were in before the heavens opened
with torrential rain for the next 15 minutes but this did not deter the rest
of the field.
Only one ‘2’ today and that came from Burnie Sinclair on
the Ocean 7th.
Near pins went to Steve Armstrong (2), Al Keith, Peppo
Frick, David Phillips, Bryan Priestley and Burnie Sinclair.
In the pair’s competition, Rod Howett and Chris Voller
won with second place going to David Phillips and Burnie Sinclair.
Wednesday, June 20, Treasure Hills - Stableford
This would be our last visit here until the management
restructure their green fee policies for sport days. How many times has this
been introduced over the past few years on this course? It’s a shame really,
the course was in great condition and the new tees were perfect.
The Aussie big boy Ian Plummer won division 2 with 37
points, Michael Padilla was second with 32 and Rodney Howett took third with
30 points.
Steve Armstrong, another new OZ boy with us and playing
off 8, won division 1 with 35 points, Chris Voller was second on 31 and with
the cut at 6-20, ‘Countback’ Burnie was in this division and finished third
with 30 points after beating Mikael Anderson on a 17/16 back-nine count
back.
Friday, June 22, Eastern Star - Stableford
A very quiet week indeed and there were only six groups
out today, with the cut being 6-14 in division 1 and 15 plus in division 2.
As we have mentioned before, the course is improving each
week and there were many comments after today’s round on how the greens are
speeding up and in better condition. Pleasant conditions yet again here with
a strong breeze coming off the coast.
There were two 38’s in today and winning division 1 with
one of them was Arthur Hancock ahead of Mike Missler in second, one point

Kristin bags a brace and the mug
PSC golf from The Café Kronborg
Monday, June 18,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
1st Kristin Helgason (18) 37pts
2nd Ronnie Ratte (29) 35pts
3rd Dave Richardson (27) 30pts
On time departure for Mountain Shadow arriving 45 minutes
later. Check-in was fast and we teed off at 0935, 25 minutes early under
cloudy skies with a good stiff wind, but soon after the sun came out. The
course was in various stages of coring and sanding but quite playable. There
seems to be a lot of money being spent on both courses, maybe new owners.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 10
minutes we welcomed James Carrick back from Las Vegas. The scores on the day
were not great but in the beginning Kristin Helgason looked like he was
going to run away with it but finished first with 37 points. Creaky Ronnie
Ratte was second on 35 points and Dave Richardson third with 30.
Thursday, June 21,
Pleasant Valley - Monthly Mug/Stroke
1st Kristin Helgason (18) net 67
2nd Ronnie Ratte (29) net 70
3rd Dave Richardson (27) net 72
It was that time of the month for stroke play at the
delightful Pleasant Valley for the Cafe Kronborg Monthly Mug. We had an
on-time departure with a 45 minute transit to the course. Tee-off was
scheduled for 1000 but we managed to get away 40 minutes early. We finished
in 3 hours and 50 minutes despite playing the last three holes in the middle
of a shotgun start.
The course on the day was in very good condition and
there was a bunker grooming tractor working in bunkers all day.
Back in the clubhouse we said farewell to Joe Vanderwegon
back to Belgium early Sunday morning.
In a repeat of Monday’s podium, Kristin Helgason took the
mug for his second win this week with a fine net 67, Ronnie Ratte came
second on net 70, and Dave Richardson took third with net 72.

Stuvik races with top group at Nürburgring
Sandy Stuvik lines up on the
grid at the Nürburgring in Germany, Friday, June 22.
The second round of the Northern European Cup, Formula
Renault 2.0 season saw the weekend’s races provide a prelude to the world
famous Nrburgring 24 Hour VLN Endurance race.
17-year old driver Sandy Stuvik arrived from Thailand
three days in advance to clear his jet lag and be at his peak for the second
race weekend of the 2012 season. Following hard physical and mental training
in Rayong over the last several months, it was a primed and ready young
racer who arrived at the Nrburgring.
Despite the unseasonably cold weather and rain, which saw
temperatures dip below 10 degrees Celsius, the Thai driver showed right away
that he meant business as he finished the first qualification in a
respectable P11 in the 36-car strong Formula Renault group.
For the second qualification he gambled on setting an
early fast lap and indeed ran as P1 for the first part, hoping the rain
would break out but in the end he drifted down to P11 again with a time of
1:27:630, only 0.8 seconds behind the P1 time and amazingly only 0.2 seconds
behind P2 in this extremely competitive junior formula grid.
For the first of the two races Sandy plotted his race
start strategy with his mentor, former Red Bull F1 test driver Neel Jani,
and true to plan, the Thai driver did the tricky Nrburgring first corner on
the outside and gained 2 places at the start. Up from 11th to 9th, he pushed
on, but midway through the race went wide in front of the Mercedes
Grandstand and quickly lost the 2 positions he had gained earlier. Stuvik
brilliantly fought off the championship leader Jake Dennis towards the end
of the race to eventually take the checkered flag in a strong 11th place.
The second race started Saturday morning on a nice and
sunny Nrburgring track and in front of an ever growing group of spectators.
Sandy had a poor start and immediately lost three positions, but after only
the first 4 corners he had overtaken the three cars and was back in P11.
Then, as the Spanish driver Alex Riberas was struggling on the second lap,
Sandy slipstreamed him down the start straight and went past him breaking
into the first turn – only to find a car spun on the exit of the corner. As
he tried to avoid cars dodging right and left Sandy made contact with UAE
driver Ed Jones and both cars sustained terminal damage and had to retire
from the race.
Sandy was frustrated as he felt he had a strong car and
would have been able to push well into the top 10 group again. However, the
young Thai driver will carry his resurgent form with him to the next race in
only two weeks, this time at Oschersleben, a circuit where he was one of the
fastest cars in the official preseason testing.
Sandy Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association
of Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon
Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Fortt rebounds to take victory at Nakon Chaise
Benn Fortt, center, poses
with his trophy after winning the second round of the SB2 Superbike 1000cc
Thailand Championship at Nakon Chaise racetrack.
Talented Superbike rider, 18-year old Ben Fortt from
Pattaya won the 2nd round of the SB2 Superbike 1000cc Thailand Championship
in fine style last weekend. After Ben crashed out of the 1st round at his
local track last month, he and his team and supporters from Pattaya set off
for Nakon Chaise just north of Bangkok for the 2nd round of the championship
to take on his opponents at their local track.
With 2 days of practice and final adjustments Ben managed
to get his lap times down to match the top riders. Once qualifying started
Ben went out with a strong determination to get himself as far up the
starting grid as possible and that he did with a very professional
performance, knocking 2 seconds off his previous personal best and setting
the fastest lap of the day with a time of 1.26.35 seconds and to the team’s
delight he was on pole position for the race.
On the line up at the start of the race the tension was
very high all round and with the race being shown live on TV it was a
prolonged start. Once the race got underway all four bikes on the front row
were not prepared to give an inch and reaching the first bend all four of
them were in a line and Ben came off worst and came out of the first corner
in fourth place, but with some true determined riding Fortt worked his way
through the field and eventually picked off his rivals to win the race.
Interviewed afterwards, Ben recalled his previous
disappointment in crashing out.
“The only thing on my mind was to get over the line 1st
today,” he said. “I was really happy with the bike set up today and seemed
to be getting plenty of grip, which I would like to thank my team Panadda
racing for their expertise in getting the bike prepared to this level. I am
very proud to bring the trophy back to Pattaya for my main sponsors CEA
Cranes and Equipment Asia.”
The 3rd round of the championship will take place at the
Bira International Circuit, just 15km from Pattaya, on the 15th July 2012.

Pattaya Sports Club holds 2012 AGM
The newly elected PSC
committee pose for a photo at the conclusion of the 2012 Annual General
Meeting, Saturday, June 16.
The PSC’s Annual General Meeting took place on Saturday
16th June with President Tony Oakes presiding.
It is well known that AGM’s are a boring necessity and
time consuming … but not this one! The meeting started at 10 a.m. and was
over by 10.45 a.m.
Following confirmation that there were sufficient numbers
under the rules for the meeting to proceed, President Tony Oakes opened the
meeting. All the existing committee had submitted their annual reports in
writing which were attached to the agenda – and with coffee from 9 a.m. the
members were able to read all relevant details prior to the meeting. All the
reports were approved with no comments other than some detail matters with
the treasurer.
The following were re-elected unopposed:
President - Tony Oakes
Treasurer - Bob Lindborg
Golf Chairman - Joe Mooneyham
Charity Chairman - William Macey
Social Chairman - Nigel Cannon
PR Chairman - Ian Doust
Registrar - Bjarne Nielsen
Dennis Willett was elected as Vice President and Joe St
Laurent as Secretary.
Tony Oakes said he was proud once again to be President
and to be working with the Committee to continue to move PSC forward and
provide a service to the members. He particularly welcomed Dennis Willett –
who was a past President and whose experience would be of great benefit to
PSC. Tony also welcomed Joe St. Laurent as the new Secretary.
