BAYWATCH: As rainy season kicks in, unfulfilled storm-drain repair means more flooding for Pattaya

A day long series of rain showers left many parts of Pattaya under a sheet
of standing water.
A low-pressure system over the Andaman Sea caused heavy showers early May 8
and continued with intermittent showers throughout the day. Despite many
unfulfilled pledges by Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome to remedy the city’s
flood-drainage problem, the steady stream of water couldn’t drain fast
enough.
Sidewalks along Sukhumvit Road, Jomtien Beach Road and Pattaya Beach Road
were covered in several centimeters of water. A stretch of Second Road near
Soi 6 remained flooded for about seven meters with floating trash only
tarnishing the city’s image even more.
With city officials unable or unwilling to back up their promises of
improvements, more flooding is inevitable. As the rainy season kicks in,
Pattaya residents will have to do the work bureaucrats are being paid for
and remove garbage and take extra caution anytime it rains.
