Students and teachers from 14 Pattaya-area schools learned about robots and automation at workshops that could land the most talented kids a place in the World Robot Olympiad.

Seventy adults and children attended the Jan. 19-20 workshop at Pattaya School No. 7. Organized with the help of Gamaco Co., which previously sponsored robot competitions at the “Edutainment Zone” in Bangkok’s Siam Paragon shopping mall, the training gave participants a chance to learn, design and create robots according to project-based learning guidelines.

The hope is that the training will lead to development of school programs that could train Thai kids well enough to compete in international robotic contests. The next World Robot Olympiad will be held in November in Malaysia. Gamaco has been tasked with finding 25 four-person teams from Asia to compete.

The training also allowed teachers to integrate relevant subjects such as science, mathematics, design, technology, computers, social studies and English by connecting the basic middle level education, secondary level education in technological innovation of artifacts to elevate the level and develop school’s capabilities to international standards.

The training was divided into two major parts. The first day saw basic education in various aspects, understanding and learning and basic practical tasks. The second day focused on practical applications and resolving problems.

Organizers called the workshop a success as students remained attentive throughout and able to carry out their assignments.
