Stuvik victorious at Zhuhai International Circuit
15 year old Thai maintains his Asian Formula Renault Championship lead
The Asian Formula Renault Championship rounds 7 and 8
were held last weekend at the Zhuhai International Circuit in China on
September 18-19. Qualifying for this event started Saturday afternoon
and 15 year old Thai racing driver, Sandy Stuvik, a resident of Rayong
and Year 10 student at the Garden International School, lived up to
everyone’s expectations by setting the fastest lap time of practice
session one, followed by Chi Cong Li.
(From left): Chi Cong Li, Sandy Stuvik and Hong Wei Cao.
Stuvik, who is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Dacon
Inspection Services and TUV SUD PSB, managed to maintain his fast pace
in session two while Xiao Le He overtook other competitors and produced
the second fastest time of the session. The young lady from Indonesia,
Alexandra captured third position of the session.
There seemed to be no doubt in anyone’s mind that
Stuvik would secure the pole after his great performance during the
official practice sessions and he didn’t disappoint anyone by occupying
the top of the chart throughout the whole session. To make it more
convincing, he did the fastest time of 1.38.193 on lap 12 which put him
0.8 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The qualifying session
finished with Sandy taking Pole position, Venezuela’s Samin Gomes second
and China’s Chi Cong Li third.
Race 1 started at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday with Sandy
starting from pole position. The Thai driver had a good start and by the
end of the first lap he had already left the chasing field far behind.
Although the race saw plenty of drama with 5 racers not finishing the
race, for Stuvik it was a quite uneventful race controlling his leading
gap. Sandy eventually took the race win while Chi Cong Li and Hong Wei
Cao from China got the 2nd and the 3rd respectively.
Stuvik again started Race 2 on Sunday afternoon from
Pole position and had a good start, immediately opening up a big gap to
the second placed Hong Wei Cao. However a huge accident after T14
involving cars number 27 and 23 brought out the red flags. Both racers
recovered well from the accident.
On the re-start Stuvik again took the lead and built
another time cushion, but again on the following lap a car spun after T1
and the safety car was called out. During the two laps behind the safety
car Stuvik’s car began developing engine problems and on the restart he
could not reach top revs anymore and immediately started falling back
down the field. By the final lap Sandy was defending as much as possible
and eventually finished 4th. However, as car number 9 had overtaken
under the safety car, the Thai youngster moved up one position to finish
with a 3rd.
Sandy was disappointed at first, haven fallen from
such a commanding position due to engine problems, but was still
satisfied with a third place and having set the fastest lap even with a
broken engine. He still maintains a large lead in the Championship with
a commanding 182 points, in front of China’s Hong Wei Cao with 155
points and Venezuela’s Samin Gomes on 111 points.
The Thai driver takes his strong Championship lead to the next race,
Shanghai F1 International Circuit in China on October 4th and 5th, 2010
with just two events left in the current season.
Sandy starts from
Pole Position at the Zhuhai International Circuit in China, Sunday, Sept
19.
United tumble to defeat at Samut Songkram
Staff Reporters
SCG Samut Songkram gained a modicum of revenge over
Pattaya United last Sunday with a 2-0 victory at their Mae Klong stadium
that sees them move within six points of the ‘Dolphins’ with just half a
dozen matches to go in the current season.

Bireme Diouf during the first half of their Thai Premier League match in
Samut Songkram, Sunday, Sept. 19. (Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
United had beaten their opponents with a similar
score-line earlier in the season but have struggled to find the back of
the net recently and went into this match without key players Santi
Chaipuak, Arlindo and Sompop Nilwong, who were all absent through
injury.
The game kicked off in bright sunshine and both teams
showed some early attacking intent, but it was the hosts who had the
first real opportunity in the 8th minute when
Nigerian striker Efe Obode brought out a good save from Narit in the
Pattaya goal and Kaewboran fired the rebound over the bar.
The home team did not have to wait too long to press
home their advantage however. On their next attack just a minute later
they forced a corner kick and when Traipop Chuchuenklin floated the ball
into the area it created panic in the Pattaya defence and SCG midfielder
Yimsa-nga stole in to crash the ball home and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Just eight minutes later SCG were able to double
their lead through a goal from Patcharin Suksai. Ivory Coast forward
Bireme Diouf got free on the left wing and sent in a telling cross that
Suksai connected with perfectly to make the score 2-0.
Things could have got even worse for United on the
half hour mark when Obode beat the offside trap and found himself clean
through on the Pattaya goal. Narit came out to narrow down the angle and
pulled off a good save but the ball rebounded back to Obode who could
only watch in anguish as his second effort flew over the crossbar.
United carved out their first real chance in the 41st
minute with a free kick from 25 yards out that Itthipol Poonsap curved
delightfully around the SCG wall only to see the ball strike the
woodwork and rebound to safety. Half time came soon after with United
still trailing by two.
The ‘Dolphins’ replaced Premwut Wongdee with Somchai
Singmanee at the break and they came out with more attacking intent with
Ludovick forcing a good save out of the SCG keeper in the 47th
minute with a long range effort.
In a final throw of the dice the United coaching
staff sent on Tana Chanabut in the 60th minute but
it was the hosts who again came closest to scoring as the game entered
its final stages. Obode had a goal disallowed for offside in the 69th
minute and ten minutes later the same player saw his cross shot well
parried by Pattaya keeper Narit.
The final whistle sounded with United having been
unable to create any clear cut opportunities and they were once again
left to rue their lack of penetration up front and the absence of key
players through injuries at the back that have left them looking
vulnerable in all of their recent games.
Things won’t get any easier for the ‘Dolphins’ this
coming Sunday as they face a home game against league leaders Muang
Thong United. Kick off at the Nongprue Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Muang Thong have taken a stranglehold on the Premier
League following Chonburi FC’s goalless draw at Bangkok Glass last
Sunday. The leaders now have a four point gap over their nearest rivals
with a game in hand.
In the first division, runaway league leaders Sri Racha FC were
handed a surprise 3-0 defeat at Nakhon Pathom last weekend but the
Eastern Seaboard team still appear to be certainties for promotion,
holding a nine point lead over Airforce United with just six matches to
go.

Phuket Dinghy Series to be hosted by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will host the Phuket Dinghy
Series consisting of four weekend events (25-26 September; 30-31 October;
27-28 November; 4-5 December), the last event coinciding with the 2010
Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
Competitive Optimist racing expected during the Phuket Dinghy Series.
(Photo/Duncan Worthington)
With one of the Regatta’s aims to promote and encourage
sailing in Thailand, the dinghy series is supported by the Phang Nga Naval
Base and sailing schools “Sailing of Phuket” (at Tha Nun by Sarasin Bridge)
and “Phuket Sailing Club” (on Koh Maphrao). Up to 25 Optimists and six
Lasers (Standard) are available for each event, with the Phuket Tasar owners
also taking part.
This will be the first time that Optimists have sailed in
the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
After reintroducing dinghy sailing at the 2009 Regatta
with Laser, Topaz and Tasars sailing on the opening weekend, the Regatta
Organising Committee have gone one-step further for 2010 and made a
commitment to supporting youth sailing in Phuket and beyond.
While there are strong youth sailing programmes by the
Yacht Racing Association of Thailand and the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in the
Gulf of Thailand, which have resulted in a number of Thailand Optimist
successes in international competitions, Phuket currently lacks similar
infrastructure and support.
Having supported sailing in the kingdom for many years,
the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta decided this year to take a grass roots
approach and has established the Phuket Dinghy Series with the aim to
encourage more youths to sail and make sailing more accessible. It is the
first time an event of this scale, comprising Optimists Lasers and Tasars,
will take place on the southern island of Phuket.
Each event in the Phuket Dinghy Series will consist of
five races - a total of 20 races over the series. The first three events in
September, October and November will be hosted by the Sailing of Phuket
sailing school at Tha Nun, next to Sarasin Bridge, which is run by Royal
Thai Navy Sailor Lt. Crd. Pornprom Sakultem.
The fourth event of the series, in December, will take
place over the opening weekend of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, off Kata
Beach. Prizes for the overall series winners will be awarded at the Royal
Awards Ceremony, by His Majesty the King of Thailand’s personal
representative, on Saturday 11th December at Kata Beach Resort & Spa.
Divisions will include: Optimist boys, born in 1995 or
later; Optimist girls, born in 1995 or later; Laser Standard men; Laser
Standard women; and Tasar. The entry fee per weekend event is THB500
(Optimist), THB1,000 (Laser) and THB1,200 (Tasar).
“As host of the prestigious Phuket King’s Cup Regatta for
23 years, it’s time for the Phuket community to go further and to support
youth sailing. The Phuket Dinghy Series is a good start and will help make
the sport of sailing more accessible in Phuket,” commented Chairman of Kata
Group Resorts Thailand, and Host Sponsor of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta,
Pamuke Achariyachai.
Phuket is home to the Phuket Yacht Club and the Ao
Chalong Yacht Club, as well as two new sailing schools, Sailing of Phuket
and Phuket Sailing Club. Phuket Yacht Club has a long tradition of
encouraging youth sailing and earlier this year sent six children to compete
in the Thailand Optimist Nationals held at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in
Pattaya, and more recently to the Open Championships held at the Hua Hin
Regatta where Phuket junior Akapoj Kankeaw took second place overall, out of
64 sailors in the Optimist Division B fleet.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is now in its 24th year, first sailed in
1987 to celebrate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 60th birthday. Under
Royal Patronage, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organised by the Phuket
King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal
Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of
Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.
Thai lady archers beat farang men at ‘wand shooting’
Every month the Pattaya Archery Club holds a “fun shoot”
where they shoot at something different than the normal archery targets.
This month’s fun shoot was a “wand shoot” (more about this later).
Poppy,
the wand shoot champion.
Clearly Thai ladies are skilled at the very difficult
challenge of wand shooting, for two of them outshot the farang male archers
by 18 hits to 13 hits much to the disappointment of the two French men and
an English man also shooting at the wand.
In “Gold” position was Naruemon Piensamoer (“Poppy”), who
scored an impressive 10 hits out of 24 (the highest-possible score);
In “Silver” position was Jantar Kaewloi (“San”), who
scored 8 hits. These two Thai ladies’ total of 18 hits easily beat the 13
hits scored by the top two farang male archers.
In “Bronze” position was Philippe Bache of France, who
scored 7 hits. This was a very creditable performance as Philippe had never
shot at 50 metres before. Another farang man was Allan Jones of England, who
scored 6 hits. Their combined score of 13 was just not enough to topple the
victorious Thai ladies from their well-deserved win.
Wolf
shows off his English longbow.
Gilbert Pelissier of France also scored 6 hits, but to
pit three men against two women seemed a trifle unfair.
Newcomer to archery Siriphrapai Suchan (“Pie”) had never
shot 50 metres before, so she was naturally a bit reluctant to join her two
Thai lady colleagues on the shooting line, not wishing to “let them down”.
Which was a shame, for shooting on her own after the others had finished,
she scored 3 hits out of just 18 arrows.
Had she joined the others at the actual shoot, the three
Thai ladies would have scored at least 21 hits (or more, had “Pie” shot 24
arrows, the same as everyone else). This would still have beaten the 19 hits
that the three farang men scored together.
Better luck next time, boys!
What is wand shooting?
The history of wand shooting is shrouded in the mists of
time and legend. It appears that many hundreds of years ago it was a rite of
passage to mark the passing of a boy into manhood. To be regarded as a man,
a boy had to shoot an arrow into a narrow piece of wood (the “wand”) stuck
upright in the ground, at least 100 yards away.
The top
3 archers: (left - right) San, Philippe and Poppy.
In those days of yore all men normally started archery at
seven years of age and were expected to be able to hit the wand with an
arrow at a distance of 220 yards, by the time they were 15 years of age.
And of course in those days the only bow in England was
the famous longbow. A bent stick of wood with no sight, no stabilisers or
other gadgets or gizmos % which shot wooden arrows of dubious straightness.
The legendary Robin Hood was said to have been able to
split a 2-inch willow wand at 100 paces, and it is this feat that modern
wand shooting is based upon.
To anyone who has any experience of archery, to hit a
stick of wood at 100 yards with a longbow is a really impressive feat.
Probably explains why English and Welsh archers were so feared in those wars
so many centuries ago.
Wolf, from Germany, is the only longbow shooter in the
Pattaya Archery Club, but he is invariably working. The archery range, at
the Pirates of Pattaya Shooting Club in Hua Yai, has a maximum distance of
only 50 metres. Therefore some improvisation was needed to conduct a wand
shoot in Pattaya.
So a strip of tape, 4 inches wide, stuck vertically onto
a target served as a makeshift “wand”. Longbows were replaced by modern
recurve bows and the distance was just 50 metres % but as near as could be
got to replicating the real thing.
Even so, to hit such a narrow target at that range takes
some doing, and the club members found this quite a challenge.
A number of the club’s members were absent from this
shoot % working abroad, on holiday, or visiting their home countries. When
most of them return to the club, then another wand shoot will doubtless he
held % judging by the good reception this event received by the archers
concerned.
Trying archery in Pattaya
Pattaya Archery Club shoots on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 10.00 am and finishing at about noon or
thereafter. Anyone % Thai or farang, young or old, man or woman % is welcome
to come along to the Pirates of Pattaya Shooting Club in Hua Yai and find
out what it is all about.
Beginners’ Coaching is held on a Tuesday and / or a
Saturday. The Coach’s services and the use of the club’s bows, arrows and
other equipment are free for beginners, and so it costs nothing to see if
this challenging sport is for you.

1st Tom Byrne 36pts
2nd Robin Peach 35pts
3rd Chris
Knapp 34pts
A competitive day at Green Valley saw Tom Byrne take the
spoils with a very workmanlike 36 points. Tom is a Green Valley regular and
used his course knowledge to good effect to rebuff the challenge of Robin
Peach. Robin, holidaying from London, played steadily to relegate Chris
Knapp to third. Rick Holmes and Ken Graham narrowly failed to achieve third
with count back going to the back 6.
The ‘2’s were shared by Rick Holmes, Alec Hoare, and Tom
Byrne.
Sunday, Sept. 12, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Rick Holmes 36pts
2nd Charles Sheppard 35pts
3rd
Frank McGowan 33pts
Another wet day made the conditions tough for a good
field of players. Rick Holmes is fighting his way back from injury and has
been showing signs of a return to form. He hit the spot today with a very
competitive 36 points to win from regular Green Valley stalwart Charles
Sheppard. Irishman Frank McGowan took third a couple of points off the pace.
A brace of ‘2’s were achieved by another Irish regular
Alec Hoare and Chris Knapp.
Sunday, Sept. 19,
Green Valley - Stableford
1st Rodney Hayes 37pts
2nd Roar Berger 34pts
3rd Chris
Knapp 34pts
The course continued to play long with the sustained
rains making the going soft. However, Australian Rodney Hayes made light of
the difficult conditions to record an easy win with a commendable 37 points.
Rodney has been a very low handicap golfer in his day and this is evident in
his short game which stands him in very good stead. Roar Berger must have
thought he was on the ski slopes of his native Norway as he sped to take
second place from a flagging Chris Knapp.
Nobody made a ‘2’ today.
Presentations were conducted at the Golf Centre Bar on
the course with amiable hosts John and Geoff, assisted by their lovely
staff, taking excellent care of the golfers.
If you would like to play with the IPGC members at Green
Valley on a Sunday, you can contact mobile 084 782 4582. All transportation
to the course is arranged from The Haven leaving at 09.00 and you need to
sign up prior to the day.

PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Wednesday, Sept. 15,
Pattana - Stableford
Thirteen players set off from the white tees over the
difficult Pattana layout which proved to be even more of a challenge than
normal due to a preponderance of sanded greens.
Clive Bruce fared the best amongst us with a one under
handicap round of 37 points to take out the A Flight ahead of Damian Trant
in second and Graham Beaumont in third, both on 32 points.
In the B division it was a close call between three
combatants with Brian Orr taking the top honours with an even par 36 points
and Ted Morris edged the count-back over Les Hall for second spot after both
finished on 35.

Burapha bares its teeth to Bunker brigade
PSC golf from The Bunker
Monday, Sept. 13, Phoenix
- Medal
We made the short trip to Phoenix to find the course
unusually quiet and in good condition. We teed off 20 minutes early and
played at our own pace for the complete 18 holes, all in all, a great round
of golf.
Geoff
Cox, winner at Crystal Bay.
J.J. was steady all day, with only one bad hole on his
card, to finish as the only golfer to better his handicap with a net 71.
Geoff Parker continued his recent good form to finish second, one shot ahead
of Peter Habgood.
Only 3 near pins were claimed by J.J., Mashi, and Dave
Dolle.

2nd Geoff Parker (15) net 73
3rd Peter Habgood (17) net 74
Wednesday, Sept. 15,
Burapha - Stableford
We made a return to Burapha to play the C and D courses
(surely the hardest 2 nines here) to find they were still set up as prepared
for the recent Thai PGA tournament held there. The fairways were cut
extremely narrow, and the rough was extremely long, truly brutal, and almost
impossible to play any kind of shot out of.
The scores on the day reflected the tough conditions, and
several golfers were disheartened by the scores they were recording. The
winner on the day was Geoff Parker, closely followed by Geoff Cox, with Reg
Smart making a welcome return to the podium.
With the course set up like this, it has to be the
toughest test of golf in the Pattaya area, but provides a good opportunity
to appreciate just how good the pro’s are.
Geoff Parker, J.J. and Lee Butler secured the near pins
on the day.
1st Geoff Parker (15) 33pts
2nd Geoff Cox (16) 32pts
3rd Reg Smart (26) 30pts
Friday, Sept. 17, Crystal Bay - Stableford
With many players currently on their travels, a small
field set out to Crystal Bay to take advantage of the current low season
promotion. We played the B and C nines and found them to be in good
condition, and although the rain threatened, it held off for the complete
round.
The long-hitting Alan Freeman made a welcome return
(albeit a short one) and playing with a new driver he proceeded to make easy
work of some of the shorter holes. Geoff Cox continued his newly found run
of form to win with 36 points; Peter Habgood finished second and there was a
3-way tie for third with J.J. edging out Alan Freeman on a count-back
Near pin winners were Colin Stokes J.J., Mashi, and Peter
Habgood.
1st Geoff Cox (16) 36pts
2nd Peter Habgood (17) 34pts
3rd
JJ Harney (11) 33pts
With three wins and two second places, Geoff Parker has taken a
commanding lead in the Golfer of the Month race. Only Geoff Cox and J.J.
have chance to catch him over the remaining 5 games.
Boats almost needed at Navy
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Sept. 14,
Plutaluang - Stableford
Tuesday saw the group tee off in fine conditions at
Navy with the South & East combinations to be our test for the day. It
was 7 or 8 holes later, depending on what group you were in when the
heavens opened, and the course was awash, greens unplayable, but we knew
all would be well soon enough with a little patience. And so it was,
after an hour or so, the rain abated, the greens drained sufficiently,
and we were underway again.
The rain took only 1 casualty, Max, returning from a
long lay-off decided the heavy going was not to his liking (fair enough
too) and retired gracefully. We had welcomed a few new lads today,
James, Richard, Steve & Ben, all battled through manfully.
The scores were influenced by the conditions, with
Jeff Wylie (6) coping best, to return 32 points. Mike Pledgr (20)
returning after knee replacement surgery was next best with 28 points,
while Brian Ferrigno (26) returned 26 points to get the bronze.
Near Pins were secured by Jeff, Richard & Mike, with
one not won so a donation to the Banglamung Boys Home follows.
Thursday, Sept. 16,
Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday was the return to Pleasant Valley, hoping
for no rain, and so it turned out to be, with the round completed albeit
under threatening skies. The course was in good condition, while three
greens were lightly sanded, others rolled well at moderate pace.
Again it was Jeff Wylie (6) who led the way, this
time with a much better score of 39 points, a combination of the
comparative ease of the course and the better playing conditions. Second
place went to Graham Hiskett (14) with 31 points, having thrown in
several wipes from seemingly non threatening positions, but that’s
amateur golf, one slip and it’s gone (sometimes).
Graham was to the fore with the near pins, claiming
two, while Ed just edged him for his third, both players three-putting
from 12 foot or so on the tricky 17th.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally
on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai
Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with
Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details
on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088.
Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!
112 celebrate PSC’s 100th Monthly Tournament
The
runner-up team.
Friday, Sept. 17 – St.
Andrews
On a fine September morning some 112 PSC members came
together to play in the 100th Monthly Golf Tournament
(the first was played in late 2000). Where should such a celebration take
place but at St Andrew’s, a name synonymous with golf the world over.
So if it started in 2000 – how come we have just got to
100? The answer is that there are 10 most years – in the other two months
are the Charity Classic and the Club Championship.
Joe Mooneyhan – PSC Golf Chairman decided that this would
be a 4-person Texas Scramble plus Near Pin’s and Long Drives – a popular
decision as seen by the number playing – the best turnout for a while.
The
winning team with PSC Golf Chairman, Joe Mooneyhan, far right.
As the members arrived to register they were greeted by
Joe Mooneyhan, Max Matthews and Nigel Cannon and given a commemorative bag
towel.
With a Noon shotgun start players began their journey to
their appointed tees. The shotgun went off promptly and the competition was
under way – however within 30 minutes rain arrived with thunder and
lightening – so play was held up for around an hour. A few took the decision
to call it a day but most carried on playing a sodden course and all
finished in daylight (just).
Back in the Clubhouse Joe and Max were working out the
results and technical prizes from some wet score cards and markers. However,
for the players it was a nice hot shower followed by a couple of beers and
we all felt better.
The
third placed team.
Green Valley laid on a superb buffet and excellent
service by the staff to provide the drinks.
Once all were in and the results calculated it was time for the presentation
of the prizes.
MC Nigel Cannon welcomed all to this, the 100th
PSC Monthly and introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyhan who thanked Max for
his hard work and all for their support on the day. He was followed by PSC
President Tony Oakes who on behalf all of today’s competitors thanked Joe
for a well run competition and appreciated the work it takes to run such a
day.
Back then to PSC MC Nigel to announce the winners
followed by the lucky draw.
The next monthly is on October 22nd at Pattana Golf
and Sports Resort with the Presentation at the Diana Garden Resort.

It is a well known rule amongst those who are
resident in Pattaya that we have to get to our friends, whether they are
coming for a long holiday or returning from work, early. Get to them
before they acclimate to the Pattaya night life, in the case of the
visitor, or before they get the rust out of their swing, in the case of
the working lad. For Scotland’s Ian Rippley it did not go according to
form as he opened his Pattaya stay with a brilliant gross 78 net 65 and
victory in this month’s Medal.
It took a count-back to separate Stan Bismuke and
Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick both tied on a net 69, the scales tipping in
Stan’s favour.
The battle in the Red Flight went down to the wire
with Gib Nipaporn net 73 edging Yui Bietry by a single shot to win the
Red Flight medal.
Both Ian and Gib will join all the other qualifiers
to compete in the gold medal at Green Valley in January 2011.
Back at Lewiinski’s it was party time as Ian gave a
gracious bell ring to celebrate his victory, and to top it all we had a
guest appearance of Christy ‘Buttons’ Knight and Cinderella.

2nd Mike Jeffreys (1) 39pts
3rd
Morten Esseth (21) 36pts
No one knows when he will strike, but Vic ‘the silent
Assassin’ Hester never keeps them waiting too long. Vic’s 41 points was
the best on the day and it had to be that good to edge Mike Jeffreys
rock solid 39 points. Morten Esseth’s even par round filled the rostrum.
‘Elvis’ and ‘Sat-nav’ both carded very good 35 point
rounds.
Second placed Mike and third placed Morten split the ‘2’s pot between
them.

Peter ‘Don O’Corleone Henshaw, who continues to split
his time between Lewiinski’s, the Sin Bin, Maggie Mays and relaxation in
Pattaya, and who vacillates between a 15-19 handicap, finally stood atop
the A Flight podium with a best of the day 37 points. Vic ‘The Silent
Assassin ‘pushed Don O’Corleone all the way, coming in one shot adrift
for his second pay day in as many games.
The other half of the Dublin Mafia, Christy ‘Buttons’
Knight, was not to be outdone by his sidekick as his 35 points took care
of the junior flight. Jim ‘Houdini’ Bell gratefully accepted the silver
with his 32 points.
Vic Hester, Tore Eliassen, Christy Knight and
Marilynn Hayes shared the ‘2’s pot.

Warning - Bus trouble

Arnold Jones, Mod Chaviraksa, Prae Mattawong and Ted Senior.
Barry Hooper
My headline refers to a problem that occurred for the
first time ever for the TRGG on Saturday 18th September whilst transporting
our players to Plutaluang.
We have been using the same mini bus operator for the
transport of our golfers for several years now without any problems or
incidents. But on the way out to Plutaluang the bus hired for the day was
stopped along with many others it seems by the police on the outskirts of
Pattaya. Upon stopping it was announced by the police that our driver did
not have the necessary documents to be using the vehicle for commercial
purposes and it was seized on the spot and prevented from going any further.
You can imagine the consternation suffered for the five
golfers on board. The matter is being taken up with the bus operator and we
will try and report on the outcome.
Other transport was arranged to come out from Pattaya and
bring the golfers to the course, arriving eventually some one and a half
hours later than planned.
A warning to other golf trip operators - please check out
your bus hire companies carefully and make sure that they are fully
documented. I realize that could be a problem because the documentation is
likely to be in Thai, but better safe than sorry!
Apparently the police are operating a crack down on the
“unlicensed” mini bus services now on offer. Yet another thing to disrupt
the pleasure of the few visitors that we have at the moment enjoying their
personal sports pursuits or just travelling in this lovely country.
Monday, Sept. 13, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Amphan North (10) 41pts
2nd Tewin Lamthong (12) 40pts
3rd Tony Avery (14) 39pts
Div. 2
1st Reg Cranwell (19) 41pts
2nd Kevin Rose (22) 39pts
3rd
Robert Rose (21) 34pts
On Monday we went to Pleasant Valley with a very large
group so two full divisions. We had not visited this course for some time
and as the name depicts I am very glad to report we were “pleasantly”
surprised. The course was in very good condition and played very well.
It was obviously to the liking of the ladies as the top
two places in Div 1 went to Amphan North for the win with forty-one points
and Tewin Lamthong in second place with forty. Third man home was Tony Avery
with thirty-nine after winning the count back over Peter Karhu.
Div 2 found Reg Cranwell heading the field with forty
points and following him in was Kevin Rose at thirty-nine. Some five back in
third was Robert Rose at thirty-five.
Two ‘2’s on the day came from Amphan North and (Mr.’2’)
Ted Senior
One day later on Tuesday we had a purely social golf
outing to Wang Junta for the pleasure of the many Australian visitors that
we have at the moment as well as our regular faithful followers. Enjoyed by
all it seems despite the day being very wet. Many made comment that they
would like to go back on a day with better weather.

Div. 1
1st Tewin Lamthong (11) 38pts
2nd Ted Senior (14) 37pts

Div. 2
1st Derek Thorogood (22) 33pts
2nd Jeff Boylan (26) 33pts
3rd
Marnie Kregor (32) 32pts
On Thursday we went back yet again to Phoenix to play yet
again the Mountain and Lakes layouts. We found the course to be in good
condition, as always, and we had a large entry so two divisions. The course
was also quiet so all had a reasonable time for their round. This venue has
been really bringing out some good scoring recently, but like last week no
one was able to break forty points.
Tewin Lamthong went one better that her Tuesday outing
for the Div 1 win with thirty-eight points, just beating Ted Senior home by
one (thirty-seven). Mike Smith was third at thirty-six.
In Div 2, Derek Thorogood just squeaked the win by one on
the count-back over Jeff Boylan, both with thirty-three points. Third again
was a count-back decision, this time in favour of Marnie Kregor over Peter
Roberts with both players on thirty-two.
A near pin prize was on offer and was won by Amphan
North. The Nagger award (lowest score) was won by a lady, Mod Chaviraksa,
who obviously had one of her off days. She was very reluctant so I
understand to accept the award but was eventually persuaded to drink from
the female anatomy receptacle which contained the prize.
Only the one ‘2’ recorded and that was from Mike Smith.
Saturday, Sept. 18,
Plutaluang S&N – Stableford
1st Warren Gallop (10) 42pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (21) 36pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 33pts
4th
Peter Roberts (16) 34pts
On Saturday we took a trip out of town to Plutaluang. We
only had a small entry (I do not know why but many a golfer does not seem to
like this course, but in my opinion it is a very fair test of golf) and the
day was badly delayed by the police stop and seizure of the mini bus (see
opening report) bringing five of the golfers to the course. But one group
set off and the others followed a little time later.
The course was very damp as there had been considerable
rain during the previous night so no buggies were allowed on the fairways
and many decided to walk it seems.
Winner on the day was Warren Gallop with a fine forty-two
points. It just goes to show that working on your game does pay off as I
happen to know just how hard Warren has been practising lately. Second place
went to Derek Thorogood with thirty-six points, his second podium place of
the week. In third it was another placing for Ted Senior with thirty-three
points to go with his second on Thursday. In fourth also with thirty-three,
but losing out on the count-back over the last three holes, was Peter
Roberts.
The near pin on the day (thanks must go to Mike Ensor
whom I understand is the sponsor of the near pin awards at the TRGG) went to
Derek Thorogood and there were two ‘2’s from Mod and Ted.

Thompson on top once more
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Once again the gods of good weather smiled down upon
the Three Sisters players. Three groups went off from 6:00 to 6:45 a.m.
at the Pattaya Country Club this past 15th of September.
Bill Thompson, right, (the chockee) and Larry Emerson (the choker).
There were some clouds about but mostly it was humid
and sunny and a nice breeze was up during the last few holes. The course
was in reasonably good shape but there was little roll on the dew
covered fairways.
Back at Caddy Shack II the cards were tallied and the
same players were at the top this week as they were last week. Bill
Thompson came in first with 42 points followed by Larry Emerson with 35
(some folks can’t handle losing all the time). Trailing not too far
behind were Mark Campbell 33, Ciano Clavia 30 and Herb Ishinaga 29.
Herbie provided the usual array of snacks plus home cooked meat loaf
for sandwiches.

Tuesday, Sept. 14, Green Valley – Stableford
Well it rained, in fact it poured it down, and the
fairways were running with water and there were swimming pools all over the
place. We also had that jagged white stuff coming down from the sky, and
thunder quite close. All in all it was very unpleasant. Wet, soaked to the
skin under umbrellas, with the rain pounding down, what a fine day.
It had all started so well, fine breakfast at Bert’s,
slow drive up to Green Valley, quick book in at a great rate, then over to
the start where we were able to get away with no one in sight. What can go
wrong?
The first few holes were fine, a bit overcast but we
lived in hope. Then it started to rain, not too bad at first, a bit spitty,
so the covers went on the bags, then the dark sky started to roll over and
we knew we were in trouble.
So it rained, well poured down, for the best part of an
hour, then it slowed down to a persistent drizzle, and we decided to wade
through the water and finish the round. It was not fun, there was no place
to put the ball that was not covered in ‘casual water’. Still, we finished,
and surprisingly some had a good score. Most were just wet.
These golfers are crazy; where else can you have fun
stood in shorts in the country, under an umbrella as lightning flashes and
thunder crashes overhead. Yes we will all be there the next time.
Back at Bert’s most turned up but some were washed away.
The winner of the A Flight, 0 to 17, was announced as Brian Parrish with 40
points ahead of Walter Baechli in second with 36 points and Mashi Kaneta in
third with 35 points. In the B Flight, 18 up, the winner was P.S. Basi with
29 points on count-back over Mick O’Meara in second with Tom Cotton in third
with 28 points. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Brian Parrish, Mike O’Brien, Mick O’Meara, Dick Warberg
Long Putts: Mashi Kaneta, Brian Parrish.
Roaring ‘forties’ at Pleasant Valley
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Monday, Sept. 13, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
There were 21 golfers who showed up to play this very
well presented course today. As per usual the Admiral herded us aboard the
buses at 0815 and forty minutes later we were at the club. The first group
teed off at 0935 and managed to finish one hole before the rain hammered
down. Sheltering under brollies and behind trees, as there were no shelters
nearby, the first few groups hunkered down for twenty five minutes until the
storm had abated. Most of the other players retreated to the comfort of the
club house before venturing out to play as the storm subsided.
The
Admiral, right, presents the Monthly Mug to September winner Per-Olav Baarli.
Despite the deluge, the course drained off very well and
buggies were back criss-crossing fairways after nine holes of play. The
greens were slow though and this attributed to the high points scores today.
Colin Swann was welcomed back a little earlier than
anticipated following a few months back in the UK. Unfortunately he had left
his golf clubs with Kevin Dinan, who is also away overseas and not due back
until next week, so Colin’s first hit out for over two months was with a
spare set that the Admiral loaned him. Nevertheless, regardless of this
misfortune he still managed a win (of sorts).
Golfers worth a mention that didn’t run a drum were: Les
Hall and Ken Bernek 35 points, Dave Richardson (Admiral) 36 points, Mike
Gosden, Martin Todd and Per-Olav Baarli 38 points and Stu Rifkin 39 points.
Whether the handicapper sharpens the knife with these aforementioned is
conjecture. What is a certainty is that the most of the podium winners will
be cut!
Ted Morris won the A flight with a scintillating score of
44 points. Not far behind in second and third were Bill Plath and Paul
Avery, both with a commendable 42 points and Mike Allidi shot 70 off the
stick with 41 points. Great golf guys!
Daryl Evans did B flight justice by firing a solid round
for 41 points and first place. Second and third were Patrice Bardy and
Graham Buckingham with good scores of 38 points and fourth was Mike Winfield
also with a good score of 37 points.
A-Flight (0-16)
1st Ted Morris (12) 44pts

Having not played for a few months and having to use
unfamiliar clubs, Colin Swann managed to win the Compass Cap today and his
donation has now brought the bin to 4,540 baht. It is no doubt discouraging
for all those golfers (this writer included) who have had a terrible or
unlucky day on the course. However, on the flip side, they should take
comfort in knowing that good has come from their disappointment(s) as some
child or children will ultimately benefit by their donation(s).
A bon voyage was expressed to Mike Gosden who is off to
Perth to celebrate his birthday with his mates over there. He will be back
with us late this month.
Thursday, Sept. 16,
Phoenix – Stroke/Medal
Twenty players fronted up for this month’s stroke event,
held as always at the Phoenix Golf Course. Only 19 started though, as the
Admiral had to pull out due to nagging illness. Nevertheless, he managed to
have us all loaded up in the buses at 0815 for the relatively short trip
down to the course.
As always this course presented itself extremely well and
everyone enjoyed the superb layout. The greens were a pleasure to putt on
and the fairways a treat to hit off. The weather was just about perfect with
a good breeze to keep you cool and to make you think about club selections.
There were no stories of interest or gossip to pass
around after the game, so one can only imagine that all were intent and
focused on shooting a low score. Alas, only two players managed to play
better than handicap.

Lazecki rides out the storm
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
An empty St Andrew’s beckoned for the Pattaya Golf
Society on Tuesday, 14th September as the group visited to play a stableford
competition on this attractive course.
Thunderstorms surrounded the group as they teed off and
it soon became clear the round would be punctuated by a break or two at some
stage. Indeed after nine holes the heavens duly opened and a cool, almost
cold and damp wait ensued. Refusing to accept defeat the group restarted in
very soggy conditions where it was difficult to avoid water for the stance,
stroke or position of the ball and it all became a bit of a lottery.
Lottery winners on the day included Len Jones whose
thirty damp points took third place, four behind the soggy 34 point
scorecard of Johannes Murgen. Unfazed by the monsoon conditions hardy
Canadian golfer Tim Lazecki kept his cool and returned with a fine score of
35 points for the win.
There were understandably no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby
Bevy went to Mr. Len after he tumbled from the twelfth tee box, sliding
fully ten feet down the slope, only to finish his round with his back
covered in mud and his underwear full of water! Still ne’er mind eh, it’s
all part of wet season golf on the Eastern Seaboard.
Mac’s back
The Pattaya Golf Society visited beautiful Bangpra on
Thursday, 16th September, for some monkey business, aka stableford golf. The
course was very soft and damp as a result of recent rains and greens 2-9
were cored and dressed, but it did not detract from an excellent day’s golf.
The sky remained overcast throughout meaning that conditions were extremely
comfortable for the farang field.
Scores generally were low but Tim Lazecki still managed
to get in the frame again with 32 points for a share of third place with
Tore Eliassen and Kazuo Takimoto. Mikael Andersson continued his golfing
rehab with 33 points for second place. Paul McNally made the impact the
group has been waiting for, for so long, with his excellent gross 72 and but
for a couple of putting lapses it would have been much better. His 42 points
was a startling reminder of the golf of which the Englishman is capable.
Norman McKinnon and Taki shared the ‘2’s pot for their
fine efforts on the eighth and twelfth respectively and the Booby Bevy went
to Alan Maxwell for forgetting his golf shoes and playing the course in
casual footwear, flip-flopping to a leaderboard low.
There were no other surprises on an excellent day at
Bangpra.
Zimmerman runs hot at
Rayong C.C.
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Rayong CC on Saturday,
18th September, to play a stableford competition. The course was as the
group expected with slow greens but the very attractive costs made it a
bargain as usual.
The group’s average winning score at the course is a very
healthy 69 and this day was no exception with David Thomas finding a modicum
of form just before his departure and recording 33 points to share third
place with Alan Maxwell. In second was lean German golfer Johannes Murken
and his 38 points was ample reward for some long hitting and accurate golf.
The winner was Canadian golfer Martin Zimmerman and his 40 points off a
handicap of thirteen was an excellent achievement on a course where putting
was such a test.
Martin also recorded the day’s only birdie ‘2’ thereby
enhancing his pocket money for the day. The Booby Bevy went to the returning
Greg Gawron for his low score and fifteen - ten split.
Rayong C.C.? Good value and empty, what more can a
Pattaya golf group wish for at a weekend.

2nd Rodney Hayes (9) 37pts
3rd Joe Niisato (18) 36pts

5th
Trevor Schirmer (13) 34pts
A smaller than average group set out from the Haven
amidst the gathering clouds in high hopes that the rain would stay away and
for once it did, although the conditions were not entirely ideal even though
carts were allowed on the fairways, dispensing with the need for ‘winter
rules’ on the day.
Shuichi
Kodaka.
The heavy conditions put a premium of long driving but
with the width of the fairways always helpful, it was a chance to open the
shoulders and swing hard.
Shuichi Kodaka did exactly that and managed to play
steadily mostly in-between, as he collected two birdies, for 4 points each,
eight pars for 3 points each and even slipped in a couple of blobs to return
a six under score and his best for several months.
He was followed in by the, as usual, steady Rodney Hayes
with a one under handicap round in second and new comer Joe Niisato just
getting the better of Johannes Murkin in a count-back for third with a
better 21 to 20 score over the inward half. Trevor Schirmer clipped into
fifth for an honourable mention a further two back.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new member
Joe Niisato, Stephen Gilmour and Anthony Cash and also welcomed back
Johannes Murkin.

Having got away with the weather on the previous outing,
the trip to Green Valley proved to be rather more disappointing as the rains
came down heavily causing the withdrawal of one of the groups who were
caught in the open at the storms heaviest downpour.
Al
Keith.
Marty Rock strode on after the stoppage for lightning and
flooding to take another win and continue his success rate with The Haven’s
group, as level par was enough to take the day’s top spot.
Mike Dabanovich kept in close touch for the whole round
but was just unable to sink the vital putts at the right time and had to be
content with second by the slimmest of margins.
Russell Exley again promised much and delivered less
although there were some promising signs that his game will soon be on track
and in good time for the upcoming “Rider Cup” match with The Rabbi’s at the
end on the month. Shuichi Kodaka, although unable to match his fireworks of
Monday, did well enough for fourth place.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but
Mike Dabanovich and Mikael Andersson shared the first division pool which
included a roll over.
After breaking the language barrier The Doc welcomed new
member Iketani Yoshitaka before presenting the prizes.

Once again Shuichi Kodaka led in the field, making it a
terrific week of golf that resulted in a two stroke drop in handicap for the
following week’s competitions. Even though the conditions were far from
good, with heavy rains once again curtailing play on more than one occasion
during the day, he managed to keep his game intact even after a one and a
half hour stoppage, to collect his second win of the week.
Rick Holmes, taking time off from the driving range and
the wall where he was to be found banging away during the past couple of
weeks, turned in a very solid performance to return a level handicap round
and claim second place.
Warren Gallop had the better of the count-back over
Norman McKinnon with a 20 to 18 result on the back nine and once again
steady Trevor Schirmer had a mention in fifth spot another two back from
them.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Back at The Haven, Warren Gallop was welcomed back prior
to the prize giving.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi

Imagine you hold
the hand below and are the fourth to bid after three passes to you.
West dealt and everyone is vulnerable. The hand certainly does not meet
the rule of fifteen to open in fourth seat (the rule of fifteen states
that high card points plus number of spades should add up to fifteen in
order to open). With only ten high card points, including the singleton
king of spades, I would certainly pass. What about you - what would you

If you chose to pass
out the hand, as I would have done, you would have missed a game! Of the
six tables where this was played, only one passed it out. Four tables ended
up in game in hearts played by South, and three of these made it.
The defence can take a
diamond, a heart and two clubs. However, if West makes the probable lead of
the jack of spades, declarer will take it in hand with the king and then
cross to the ace of diamonds on board. A low club is thrown on the ace of
spades and now the defence can take only three tricks - a club, a diamond
and a heart. So four hearts bid and made by South.

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Sept. 13, Burapha
- Stableford
A massive Aussie invasion boosted the players at Burapha
to the highest number since early in the year, a total of 57 Outbackers.
Playing C & D from the whites, some seem to relish the narrow fairways and
long rough, leaving many of the regular players in their wake. However, it
must be said that we remain very sceptical of the new USGA handicap system,
introduced last April in Australia, as many players are still seeing big
increases to their handicap, some guys playing with us today have gained up
to five shots virtually overnight!
Alan
Hinder (seated) enjoys his wine with friends Stan, Rich & Capt’ Bob.
Although the scoring in Div D was not as high as the
others, it was dominated by the Aussies with all four places going to the
west coast visitors led by Bryan Moore (36pts). The best placed regular was
B2 way back in fifth with just 29pts.
Div C went to another Aussie, Brian Moore, with 40 points
playing off 18, who received an immediate cut of two shots down to 16. Doug
Campbell got the better of Bob Parsons on count-back to fly the local flag,
both with 38 points ahead of Bob Lindborg on 36.
Siam Old Course specialist Lumpy Russell, now off the
Natch, showed us all how to play golf with a spectacular 43 points to take
Div B by seven from one of his visiting mates, Bob Bower with 36. Maybe it
is time that the PSC handicap committee took a long look at the Siam
ratings?
Finally, believe it or not, our Capt’, whose golf has
been totally out of sorts for a while, headed the premier division with 39
points, even though he seemed to drop the reins over the last three holes,
losing five shots to par. Steve Mann, who helped out at the start and with
the results again today, thanks mate, also had a good round to take second
with 38.

If you’re wondering why no scores have been posted for
Tuesday at Pattaya Country Club, it is one, because it was an incomplete
round, and two, we (the Outback) have lost all the scores!
There were 12 Outbackers on the course, which looked
considerably better today than it did a week ago, apart from the first
couple of greens, which were still pretty ropey.
The weather was muggy and oppressive with not a breath of
wind; it needed a storm to clear the air. As the round progressed, it became
clear why there was no wind, as the course was being flanked by two storms,
thus negating the usual effect (wind intake) of a depression, countering
each other.
Eventually, as the last group was playing 15th
hole, one storm took hold and that is where the golf came to its abrupt
soggy end. One group finished all eighteen holes but it was declared a
fifteen hole tournament which was won by Frank O’Neill with 32 points,
second (we think) was Geoff Moodie (28pts), third was Alan Pearce (27pts)
and fourth, we believe, was Roger Yabsley.
Wednesday, Sept. 15,
Phoenix - Stableford
Phoenix played host to 25 Outbackers playing the Mountain
and Lake nines. Murray Hart (aka Muzza) has seen his handicap tumble from 15
to 12 in recent weeks but he is still managing to beat the handicapper, as
he notched up yet another win – but only just this time. He won Div A with
37 points getting the nod over John McDonald on count-back.
Div B went to photograph as we had a three way tie on the
line as Ed Delaney, Jum and Bruce McAdam all scored 36 points. Afterwards in
the steward’s room, Jum was placed first ahead of Bruce and Ed, who has also
seen his handicap reduced, coming down from 31 a short while ago to 27 now.
There were three ‘2’s from Tony Garnett, Bruce Milner and
Ivan Plunkett and our thanks go to Steve Mann once again, who ran the day on
behalf of the Outback.
Div A (0-17)
1st Murray Hart (12) 37pts
2nd John McDonald (10) 37pts
3rd Hans Kafka (16) 36pts
Div B (18+)
1st (Jum) Karagit (20) 36pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (21) 36pts
3rd Eddie Delaney (27) 36pts
Friday, Sept. 17, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Well it was like old times playing the A & B loops here,
playing from the yellow tees which were in some cases on the white blocks
with just a little splattering of rain about halfway round, but nothing to
worry anybody. An interesting arrangement also is that the caddies supply
the rain cover for your clubs, the only other courses I know that does this
are two Siams.
Anyway back to golf, with 38 Outbackers playing, there
were some fantastic scores; one coming from George Cousins with an
unbelievable 45 points, welcome to your new handicap George, how does 16
feel?
Following closely were scores of 41 (from Stan Rees Div C
winner, new h’cap 24), 40 (from John Mills Div B runner-up, new h’cap 15)
and 39 from Steve Milne Div B third. If you want to know why you’ve been cut
three shots John, you’ve had too many 40pts+ scores!
I didn’t think the course was that easy but playing with
the likes of Jim Moreton, Paul Bourke and my good mate from Ireland, Briany
Christie, it wasn’t long before the beer started to flow and the poor old
Captain had to go home early, being slightly inebriated to say the least.
Alan Hinder has been setting the courses alight with
scores of 5 points at Burapha and 10 points at Phoenix this week. I bet a
bottle of wine with him that he couldn’t double his score again. He
initially returned a score of 22 points, having consumed the bottle of wine,
he produced his real scorecard of just 12 points. I’ll get you back!
This is a great course and was well set up and in great
condition all around; the greens were like lightning if you were above the
hole. All in all a very good day was had by all.
There were five ‘2’s from Pottsy, Paul Bourke, Jim
Moreton, John O’Keefe and Bob Philp.
Div A (0-13)
1st Murray Hart (12) 36pts
2nd John Merrick (7) 35pts
3rd Bob Philp (10) 35pts
4th James Brackett (7) 35pts
Div B (14-18)
1st George Cousins (18) 45pts
2nd John Mills (18) 40pts
3rd Steve Milne (14) 39pts
4th Lawrie McBride (14) 37pts
Div C (19+)
1st Stan Rees (25) 41pts
2nd Brian Maddox (20) 36pts
3rd Howard Marsden (23) 35pts
4th Bryan Moore (30) 34pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or

Sea fishing with the PSC
Six anglers and one guest (my driver - Chote)
participated in the mid-month fishing trip on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Everyone
agreed the trip was an unqualified success and, with a millpond ocean, an
enjoyable time was had by all.
The
anglers and boat crew hard at work.
There were 2 bag catches of 10 kilos plus and all members
had at least 5 kilos. Again, only 2 moderately large snapper about 1 1/2
kilos were caught this trip, but the numerous 1-pounders (nice pan size)
made up for the lack of large fish.
Chote and I were the most successful with one large
snapper each and 10 kilo bags apiece. The photo shows Chote, Captain and
deck hand busy scaling, gutting and cleaning the fish with several
interested on-lookers admiring the catch. Taking home fish already cleaned
is a big bonus and well worth the additional tip the crew receive.
Apologies to Summai, the picture of her with 6 fish on
the one line did not process properly and could not be printed.
Our boat boy has proven to be a big asset assisting in
baiting the hooks, detaching fish, untangling lines etc. and doesn’t stop
working all day.
This week I purchased some new fishing equipment and
tackle from a shop in Bang Saray and found prices to be considerably lower
than in Pattaya. The shop is located in the same soi as Khram Marine Fishing
Lodge, close to the number 2 pier. Whilst the range of equipment is somewhat
limited, it merits a visit for tackle replacements.
Rich Murphy, joint PSC fishing coordinator, who has been
in the U.K. for nearly 2 months due to family commitments, is scheduled to
return in 5-6 weeks. We wish you well and look forward to your return and
your valuable assistance.
The next monthly trip is scheduled for 2 October and is
fully booked with 8 confirmed attendees. We have already received 4 booking
requests for the next monthly trip on 6 November and will arrange another
mid-month trip around 12 October as some prefer mid-week trips leaving
weekends free for other activities.
Please contact me (Captain Dene) on 081 862 6279 or the PSC office to
book trips.
