The grand finale for the 13th Jesters Care for Kids
Charity Drive, or our Party Night, was staged last Saturday, September 18 at
the Jameson’s Irish Pub in central Pattaya.
Just prior to the 6 p.m. start, Jameson’s’ landlord and
Care for Kids committee member, Kim Fletcher, had a swagger of confidence
about him that had some of us, who had arrived early, a little bemused
considering the current economic hard times. However, these were ‘old shoes’
for Kim, as he had played a pivotal part in the very first effort when he
banded together with the Jesters Motorcycle Club members and other
like-minded expats from our local community exactly 13 years to the night
back in 1998.
Lewis
Woody Underwood, Jesters Care for Kids charity chairman gives a warm
welcoming speech.
At 6:30 p.m. in true ‘Jesters style’ Kevin Mitch and the
main team of riders from the Jesters MC arrived on their gleaming Harley
Davidson motorcycles to formally get the party started on what would turn
out to be one of the most extraordinary Jesters Party Night yet.
Chairman Lewis ‘Woody’ Underwood’s welcoming speech
touched on the humble beginnings of the Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drive
which was initiated at the (then) Delaney’s Irish Pub on 2nd Road and its
evolution to Jameson’s where the Party Night has been played out since 2005.
He continued to mention the likewise humble beginnings of the Charity
Drive’s very first beneficiary, the Fountain of Life Children’s Center,
which was then struggling to survive in a rundown shop house in North
Pattaya just behind Beach Road where the Holiday Inn stands today.
The
evening’s expert auctioneer Bob Philp.
Woody continued with a few poignant facts regarding how
“our beneficiaries have grown with us,” where today at the Fountain of Life
Children’s Center the kids are encouraged to bring with them a symbolic 3
baht per day. One baht goes towards the cost of their lunch, 1 baht is
donated to help those that are even less fortunate than they are, and
another baht goes into a savings fund upon which they might one day withdraw
or borrow against. This is intended to instill financial education and
disciplines that might ensure a closure to their ‘poverty cycle’.
Woody alluded that even as this city has experienced a
‘remarkable evolution’ over the past 13 years, so has the Jesters Care for
Kids Charity Drive, which now has a scope of 40 children’s beneficiaries as
well as ‘special or emergency’ cases from time to time.
PMTV’s
Paul Strachan emcees the evening.
In wrapping up, Woody acknowledged the absolutely vital
support from all our sponsors, including four Diamond Sponsors (400,000 baht
donors) Glencore International Indonesia, Herrod Foundation Switzerland,
Devil Creek Development Project Australia, and the Canadian Jackalope Open
Thailand, plus 19 Platinums (100,000 baht donors), 14 Golds (50,000 baht
donors), 28 Silvers (25,000 baht donors), 37 Bronzes (10,000 baht) and 32
Pledges (less than 9999 baht donors), a total of 134 corporate and
individual sponsors.
Woody also gave recognition to the VIPs in attendance on
the night, which included 3 times Diamond Ben Burgess from Glencore
International and Wayne Ogonoski from the Canadian Jackalope Open, as well
as Platinums Michael J. S. Lim from Hyolim (3 years), Mike Koerner (6
years), Graham Macdonald (9 years), Tony Malhotra from Pattaya Mail
(9 years) and Club Nevada (7 years) and, of course, our host, Jameson’s (5
years).
Russell
Jay Darrell hosts a show for PMTV.
Woody wrapped up his speech by acknowledging the vital,
hard-working organizing committee, comprised of both Honorary Jesters and MC
members who contribute their essential skills, management, expertise and
their time free of charge, to make the fund raising effort of ‘Care for
Kids’ the success that it has been for the past 13 years.
Then it was over to the evening’s expert Auctioneer Bob
Philp supported by emcees Paul Strachan from PMTV and Russell Jay from Mix
88.5 FM, with Ronny and Pete displaying the auction lots during the evening
which featured the Jesters Party Night Auction and Grand Raffle.
The Auction got into full swing and the party night was
soon buzzing with enthusiastic bidding. Somewhere during the 2nd set of
items, Jimmy Page (world famous lead guitarist from Led Zeppelin) walked in
and joined the Jesters table after graciously posing for photographs and
entertaining more than just a few welcoming handshakes and cheers from the
crowd.
Jimmy
Page (center) joins Poodle Pete (left) and Woody (right) in conducting the
Grand Raffle.
As it would happen, the next auction item up on stage was
the 2 framed ‘The Who’ Promo Posters, both signed by Roger Daltrey; and so
Jimmy added an extraordinary incentive to bidders to ‘up the ante’ by
agreeing to personally sign one of the items as well, making it a truly
remarkable unique collector’s item.
Jesters’ Ritchie Rhodes was the winning bidder with the
evening’s 2nd highest total of the night of 35,000 baht and the evening was
buzzing from then on. Jimmy Page had indeed signed a Jesters T-Shirt which
was the next item up for bid; however, the opportunity to be photographed
with it and have the item personalized by the legendary rock guitarist sent
bidding up to a truly remarkable 15,000 baht. Geoff Evans was the lucky
winning bidder for that.
What?
Did I just bid that high? Do you accept a cheque, says Joe Q to Linden
Phanpho.
Jimmy remained with us for the rest of the evening and
even assisted by drawing the main winning grand raffle prizes and chatting
with those who wished to do so throughout the night.
By the end of the evening’s action, auctioneer Bob Philp
had successfully sold a remarkable 54 individual lots, the highest single
item being the Manchester United Football Club Centenary Framed Collage &
Certificate of Authenticity claimed by Jesters Committee member John Hoffman
for B37,000, all before 11:30 p.m., for a grand total of B469,400.
Bob’s task was made so much easier thanks to the many
months of committed organization, experience and expertise from Kim
Fletcher, Deborah Philbrook, Ron Keeley and their administration team of
Karyn Walker, Linden Phanpho and Pornthip (Moo) Luanoi.
The final formality for the evening was to draw the Grand
Raffle prize winners. The winning ticket of the Honda Scoopy-i Motorcycle
package was drawn by Jimmy Page and Warawity from Chevron was the lucky
winner with ticket # 14881. That brought the preliminary gross earnings for
this year’s Charity Drive to a remarkable B6,289,344.
In wrapping up, I would like to say Thank You on behalf
of the 2010 Jesters Care for Kids’ Charity Drive Committee and Jesters MC.
Please accept our sincere thanks to all the people that have supported the
Jesters 2010 charity drive in every and any way this past year. Thank you to

BCCT tipples at the Tavern by the Sea
Dr. Iain Corness
Immediately after the Automotive Focus Group (AFG)
meeting last Friday evening, the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT)
held their networking event at the Amari’s new Tavern by the Sea on Beach
Road.
Dr.
Iain Corness (left) and Paul Strachan (right) interview Graham Macdonald for
PMTV.
Like most of these networking evenings, it was very well
attended, and specific mention was made of the very high standard of food as
supplied by the Amari, whose executive chef Jens Heier was on hand to ensure
the nibbles were just so tasty. (The baked ham and chocolate fountain were
my favorites.)
Principal sponsor of the evening was the Amari itself and
the GM, David Cumming, welcomed everyone, but had to immediately leave for a
business trip to Europe, but his RM Max Sieracki was there to keep
everything going smoothly.
(L to
R) Thitima Kongsomrith, Sales Coordinator for Amari Orchid Pattaya; Khomson
Songkhroh, Assistant Manager of Purchasing Operations for CSR Insulation
(Thailand) Limited; and Unchulee Meesri, Assistant to the Sales Manager of
Amari Orchid Pattaya.
The new chairman of the BCCT, Graham Macdonald, was on
hand, but still working for the Jesters Care 4 Kids charity, and was very
pleased to state that his little golf stall at the Children’s Fair made a
tidy profit to swell the charity coffers and he already had plans for next
year! Graham thinks ahead.
Executive Director Greg Watkins ensured the BCCT members
were looked after and arranged meetings between like souls when necessary.
Joe
Barker Bennett (left), from Crestcom-Traincom Ltd. chats with Joe Cox
(right) of Defence International Security Services.
There were many new faces, and Herman G. Rowland Jnr (has
to be American), the MD of the Jelly Belly Candy Company braved the Brits,
but with jelly beans, you can’t go wrong anywhere!
Simon Matthews (Manpower Services), Cees Cuijpers (Town
and Country), Terry Scholfield (Orion litigation), Peter Mewes (HBS Law Firm
and Consultant in Phnom Penh - a man with a 100 percent record at recovering
debt in Cambodia) and Robin Hyde (Seabra) were all regulars.
Simon
Matthews (left) and Clive N. Butcher (right) talk shop.
Becoming a regular was Joe Cox (Defence International
Security Services) but fortunately left his attack dogs at home, seen
talking to Paul Whyte, the refrigerated truck man. The big name in cranes,
Kevin Fisher, was enjoying the event (as usual), and was introducing his
nephew to the ‘better’ side of Pattaya, while Neil Farrell (EPL Elastomer)
and Richard Prouse were getting to know each other comparing wines.
With the good food, great location and a good turn-out,
this was a very successful networking evening. The next one will be advised
through the Pattaya Mail.

the BCCT; David Cumming, General Manager of Amari Orchid Pattaya; and Graham
Macdonald from MBMG pose for a photo from the stage of honor.
(L to R)
New chairman of the BCCT Graham Macdonald from MBMG; Dueanpen Thongsombat,
assistant director of sales with Amari Orchid Pattaya; Porntip Pibarnwong,
senior sales manager for Amari Orchid Pattaya; and Chris Thatcher from
Sutlet Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd. are presented on the stage of honor.
(L to R)
Richard Prouse, Renita Bromley, Pratheep S. Malhotra, Jeffrey Burrows; Kevin
Fisher and Jack are certainly enjoying the evening.
AFG investigates political stability and investor confidence
Dr. Iain Corness
The dynamic Automobile Focus Group (AFG) had one of the
more enlightening (and enlightened) speakers at the September meeting of the
group, which was held at the Amari Tower.
Voranai Vanijaka, the Coordinating Editor of the Bangkok
Post spoke to a full house of AFG members and many guests on Political
Stability and Investor Confidence. He began with some interesting statistics
from the past 78 years of a ‘democratic’ Thailand which has seen 23 military
coups d’้tat, of which only 11 were successful.
(L
to R) Dr. Iain, Maurice Brimley, Voranai Vanijaka.
Even more interesting was the fact that of the 23
military attempts to take power, 20 of them took place in Q4, which just
incidentally happens to come after the annual reshuffles in the top military
brass and police. “It’s a seasonal thing,” said Voranai.
There has also only been one Thai government which has
served out its full term of office (Thaksin 1). He went on to opine that
political stability in the usual western model does not really apply in
Thailand. In fact, on paper, it does not exist. Yet the recent yellow and
red shirt protests are being held up by the doomsayers as examples of
instability in the country, and should one invest here in the face of such
anti-democratic movements?
Voranai led the AFG members through the maze of “Thainess”,
a type of thinking and public behavior that only Thais can understand. He
claimed that Thailand is still working under what is basically a feudal
society, even though the Thai people can parrot off the descriptions of
‘democracy’, but by the same token, do not apply those principles to their
own actions. But if you are Thai, that can be understood. “The fight is not
about ideologies,” said Voranai, “it is about power and money. And everyone
in the world loves money!”
He spoke on his visits to embassies in Thailand, showing
that even the embassies do not really understand the tenets of “Thainess”,
and because of this will issue blanket warnings about the country as a
whole, rather than a suggestion of simple avoidance of certain areas.
He has spoken to investor groups such as the Japanese,
and they have the long term view. They have the infrastructure they need in
this country, and just need some government transparency for reassurance.
But will they get it? And from whom?
He suggested that there are many signs pointing towards
an early election in perhaps Q1 of 2011, with the various political parties
concentrating on that, rather than the current problems. A brief run-down on
the political heavyweights was given, plus some political predictions.
In response to a question from Peter Malhotra, the MD of
the Pattaya Mail, he admitted that Thailand did not have a “free” press as
per the Utopian model, but that the media rather self-censors these days
with a list of taboo subjects, to avoid crackdowns from above.
It was an address which many AFG members wished could
have gone on for much longer, but by inviting Voranai to the BCCT networking
which followed, direct questioning of a very interesting man continued.
Contact can be made with the AFG through Maurice Bromley

Montien shakes, stirs way to bartending contest trophies
Phasakorn Channgam
Two bartenders from Pattaya’s Montien Hotel shook and
stirred their way to first place in the 26th Eastern Seaboard Bartender
Contest.
Ekkachai Ackaradejruomsri (left), winner of the 26th Eastern Seaboard
Bartender Contest poses with Miss Jureerat Baitongtam, Miss Bartender
winner. Both are from the Montien Hotel.
Ekkachai Ackaradejruomsri took first place in the
Cocktail Flair competition while Jureerat Baitongtam iced the competition in
the Miss Bartender contest. Both won 15,000 baht and a trophy. Ekkachai went
on to represent the eastern region in the Sept. 18 national bartender
championships in Bangkok.
“Superstar Bartender” was the theme for the night, with
contestants dressing up as their favorite celebrities. Even Mayor Itthiphol
Kunplome, the emcee for the Sept. 8 evening event at the Zign Hotel in
Naklua joined in, sporting his best James Bond attire, but passing on the

Patcharee Noisang from Long Beach Garden Hotel & Spa receives her trophy and
prize from Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome for winning the Cocktail Classic
competition.
Itthiphol awarded runner-up prizes to Nitipong Anukul of
the Zign and Wichan Fuangsuwan in the Cocktail Flair contest and female
bartenders Suwanna Chanphae from the Dusit Thani Hotel and Wachiraporn
Meesane from the Zign. Second place took home 8,000 baht while third-place
finishers won 6,000 baht.
The competition, sponsored by the Thai Hotels
Association-Eastern Chapter and various hotel employee associations, was
about more than Jungle Juice and Juleps, however. It was a chance for hotels
to show off their skills in a host of hospitality services including flower
arrangement, vegetable carving, wedding cake design, head-table skirting and
other cocktail mixing contests.
