DINING OUT &  KHUN OCHA'S COOKBOOK

Jameson’s Irish Pub serves breakfast at “breakfast time”

by Miss Terry Diner

Have you ever tried to have breakfast on a Sunday morning? Breakfast complete with the children, to give your wife a morning off to lie in and wash her hair and all the other things that women like to do if they can be spared from family duties for a short while. Amazingly, early breakfasts are not all that easy in Pattaya. Many restaurants advertise that they have ‘all-day’ breakfasts, but they don’t open until 11 a.m. That’s not breakfast, that is early lunch in my book, and children cannot possibly last that long.

However, we had heard that Jameson’s Irish Pub was serving early breakfasts, so we trotted over to find that the rumor was only partly true. Jameson’s did indeed have early breakfasts, but it is a serve yourself buffet, which works out even better, particularly with children who can be picky eaters. Breakfast is available from 6 a.m. which is even earlier than our family routine, and so we arrived at a leisurely 8 a.m. ready to eat.

For those who are perhaps new to Pattaya, Jameson’s Irish Pub is on Soi AR next to the Nova Park serviced apartments. There are many ways of getting there, but the simplest is to approach via Second Road and turn right into Soi 4 at the Bangkok Bank and then follow the road up and curving round to the right and Jameson’s is on your left after the (ubiquitous) 7-eleven store.

Inside, it is outfitted in the usual British style with wood panels and flooring, a long bar on one side, an elevated section with pool tables and three more dining/drinking areas. These are all served by happy waiters and waitresses, and overseen by Kim Fletcher himself. It is a well run ship.

The breakfast buffet offerings include three types of cereals with fresh milk. There is salad (tomato, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, onion and coleslaw, plus cottage cheese, ham slices and Thousand Island dressing) but then there are the hot items including hash browns, saut้ed potatoes, streaky bacon, different sausages (beef, chicken and pork), grilled tomato and baked beans.

There is a live egg station and our orders of fried, scrambled and an omelet were very quickly brought to our table, while junior Miss attended to the toast and with two toasters there is not much waiting, and serve yourself to butter, marmalade and jam.

There are jugs of cold orange or red berry juices as well as water, coffee and tea. A fairly comprehensive breakfast, you must agree - and remember it is an all-you-can-eat deal!

The price for the all-you-can-eat breakfast is B. 150 and children under eight years of age are free. And all this is from 6 a.m., a time more known for coming home late, but it is there for all the early morning breakfasters who do not want to wait until 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. for the usual restaurant breakfasts. By the way, this breakfast deal is not just on a Sunday - it is every day!

Jameson’s Irish Pub is renowned for its food, and with Landlord Kim Fletcher having been a chef, the standard is always maintained. There is an a la carte menu, which changes monthly, as well as a rotating weekly set menu, from which you can order one course, two courses or three courses, with three courses B. 255, two courses B. 240, and one course B. 225, the choice is yours, making for a very inexpensive dining out later in the day. The monthly menu covers starters (six this month), mains (eight) and desserts (four) with the choices including a kilo rack of Asia/West pork ribs served on a board with baked potato and coleslaw salad at B. 345. Believe me, it is enormous! Naturally there is Thai food as well, and Madame tells me the Thai food is excellent.

However, we had gone for breakfast, and Jameson’s supplied us with a very inexpensive, but very filling breakfast. Thank you.

Jameson’s Irish Pub, 80/164 Moo 9, Soi Sukrudee (Soi AR), Central Pattaya. Secure parking. Open seven days 6 a.m. until late. Telephone 038 381 873, email [email protected], www.jamesons-pattaya.com

You can be a Cordon Bleu chef with a chicken

Chicken “Cordon Bleu” is a satisfying dish for both the cook and the diners, though the chicken might have other ideas. “Cordon bleu” comes from L’Ordre des Chevaliers du Saint Esprit, a 1578 AD elite group of French knights. The group became known for their extravagant and luxurious banquets, known as “cordon bleu” (blue ribbon).

Ingredients                Serves 4
Skinless, boneless chicken breasts 4
Ham slices                                    4
Swiss cheese                        50 gm
Flour
Egg                                             1
Milk                                    100 ml
Bread crumbs                      2 cups
The Easy Sauce
Cream of chicken soup         100 ml
All-purpose whipping cream  500 ml
Mix together and stir constantly over stove on low heat.
When sauce is hot, pour into dish to be served over the chicken cordon bleu.

Cooking Method

Flatten chicken breasts with the heel of your hand. Wrap a slice of ham around a piece of cheese about 5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide and then wrap the chicken breast around the ham and cheese.

Dip the breasts in flour, then in the egg wash (a beaten egg in 100 ml milk) and then in finely crushed bread crumbs. Brown in hot oil about 4 minutes a side.

Finish the chicken cordon bleu in the microwave on medium for around one minute to ensure the cheese has melted.
