“The Fox” outwits the chasing pack

Heesmkirk shows his class to secure victory in Platu Championship

Kevin Scott
The weekend of March 13/14 saw entries from Italy, Denmark, Russia and Australia compete with the best Asian teams to produce a truly international competition in the Thailand Platu Open Championship 2010, raced off the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien. Good winds, ultra competitive crews and plenty of sun made sure everyone enjoyed the fun, and sportsmanship was also given a high premium, and although it was very noisy at some of the marks almost all the teams competed with racing, not protesting, in mind.

Rolf Heesmkirk, right, and his crew on “The Fox” race to victory at the Thailand Platu One Design Open Championship in Pattaya, Sunday, March 14.

This year the oganisers experimented with a full practice day followed by a one day feeder event before the two day Open, to give the crews who travelled a long way more value for money and four days on the water. The Blue Seas Marine feeder event turned out to be a big success with crews getting the benefit of serious racing but all with an air of camaraderie and international spirit.

Thomas Sorensen from Denmark scored 3 bullets and a second to pulverize the competition while Rolf Heeskirk on “The Fox” and Jeremy Chase on “The Ferret” practiced being OCS! The Russian team on “The Weasel” showed their potential and the professionals from Australia also got up to speed.

And so onto the main event - the first round of the Quantum Sails Platu Championship of Thailand 2010, The Thailand Platu Open.

Rolf Heesmkirk showed us all why he was a previous National Champion and equal first for the Open Championship in a previous year by scoring 4 bullets on Day 1 of this year’s event. He was able to stay out of trouble and with a fast boat and excellent tactics he could also control the fleet.

The Russian team soon learned how to sail the courses and were well in with a podium chance with 5,4,6,6. The Australian boys were very fast but unfortunately an accident on board meant a dislocated shoulder and an enforced change of crew, giving them 11,3,4,3. However, “The Ferret”, the current Open champions, suffered an even bigger blow ‘before’ the start gun when their skipper, Scott Duncanson, was unable to compete due to the actions of the red shirt demonstrations in Bangkok. A hurried search for extra crew included Eduardo Barni, the International Platu Class president who took over main from Jeremy Chase who in turn took the helm. Results of 6,6,2,2 showed that they needed two races to get into the groove.

Thomas Sorenesen meanwhile came all the way from Denmark with his foredeck crew and built the rest of the team from scratch. Results of 4,2,3,5 confirmed the potential he showed us all during the earlier feeder event.

At the end of Day 1, Rolf on “The Fox” was on 4, Thomas on “Stingray” was on14, Jeremy Chase on “The Ferret” was on 16 and the Australians on 21. With a drop to follow it was still all to play for - provided “The Fox” could be tamed.

As Day 2 of the event dawned, the wind was really picking up and was presenting massive unpredictable shifts which gave the RO (Race Official) plenty to do. On one occasion his course had to be changed 80 degrees within minutes of the gun. Only his experience and patience meant he gave the competing crews good courses throughout the two days and he should be congratulated on a job well done.

Rolf started the day by continuing his unbeatable form and won race 5. Only when he saw the championship within his grasp did he produce a 2 and a 10 and there was nothing anyone else could do to beat him. The Australians produced a consistent 3,3,3 set of results which put them third overall. The Danes produced 4,1,2 to secure a very well earned second overall.

“The Ferret” suffered a few handling problems on Day 2 but got a consolation win in the last race, narrowly beating “Stingray” to secure fourth overall. The Russian team suffered a main halyard loss and missed two races but were otherwise always in the top half of the fleet.

Finally it was good to see three ‘all Thai’ teams competing and although the organizers are working hard to continually lift the international element and raise the competitive level, they also hope that Thai teams will continue to come and enjoy these events.

The next event in the series is The Top of The Gulf Regatta from 30th April to 4th May at Ocean Marina Pattaya. NOR’s and full Championship information can be found on www.OMYCsailing .com (Platu section).

City crash in top of the table clash

MBMG International League 2009/10

Paul Frain

League leaders Pattaya City played the British Club Casuals last weekend at Horseshoe Point with the Casuals sitting in third place, eight points behind City. Both teams were fired up for the match and City were out looking for revenge after being defeated by the Casuals in Bangkok earlier in the season.

City started the stronger but could only pepper their opponent’s goal with speculative shots that did little to trouble the Casual’s keeper. The Bangkok team gradually began to establish a foothold in the game and they went ahead midway through the first half when a shot by one of their forwards found its way through a packed defense and into the back of the Pattaya net.

From the kick off the Casuals missed the chance of the match as their forward tried to lob the ball over the stranded City keeper but he only succeeded in lofting it over the bar. This was a big let off for the City who responded with a hard, low shot from Earnest Dipita that beat the Casuals’ keeper and leveled the scores up at 1-1. This gave City the confidence to get forward but chances went begging and the Casuals defense held firm until half time.

After the break City picked up the tempo of the game and were well on top, but the Casuals defense were giving the Pattaya players no room and just cleared the ball anywhere whenever City threatened. A superb cross found City’s Phillip Walter in space but he headed against the Casuals’ cross bar and one got the feeling that City might live to regret some of their earlier missed chances.

This was borne out shortly afterwards when Casuals gained a corner from which their forward stole in past a static City defense to head the ball home and make it 2-1 to the visitors. Worse was to follow for City just two minutes later when Casuals played a number of passes to split the City defense wide open and make it 3-1.

City went looking to get back into the match, but the Casuals defense held firm until the last minute when Patrice Love’s shot found the back of the net to make it 3-2, but it was too little too late to salvage anything from the game.

Pattaya City now have just three games left and this coming weekend will play the Bulls Head who are currently second in the league.

FC Nova lose important points

Pattaya’s second division outfit FC Nova saw their outside chances of a promotion place take a knock last Saturday when they took on iPlay at the Pattana sports ground. A win was desperately needed by the Pattaya team but an exciting game emerged with the score line changing at regular intervals. FC Nova scored with the last kick of the half to lead 3-2 at the break, however iPlay fought back strongly in the second period and the match finished in a 4-4 draw.

FC Nova cannot afford to drop any more points against lower opposition and with only three games to go the outside chance of promotion might already have gone for this season. Their next match is against seventh placed BSL Youth on Saturday, March 27.

Chonburi governor honors disabled athletes

The region’s disabled athletes are presented with certificates by Chonburi Gov. Senee Jittakasem at a ceremony on March 16, to mark their success at the National Disabled Games in Trang last October when the team finished second overall.

Vimolrat Singnikorn
Chonburi Gov. Senee Jittakasem presented honorary certificates to nine athletes who took second place at the National Disabled Games in Trang last year.

Rev. Worawut Sarapan, licensee for the Redemptorist School of Pattaya, noted the athletes’ trip to Trang was a cooperative effort with the Redemptorist School arranging transportation, the Audiovisual Education School sponsoring hearing-impaired athletes, the Karunyawet Home for the Disabled taking care of the mentally challenged participants and the Redemptorist School for the Blind shepherding their charges.

Thanks to good teamwork, Worawut said, the Pattaya delegation took 49 gold medals, 45 silver and 45 broze medals. That was good enough for a second-place overall finish in a competition Pattaya teams have won 10 times.

Senee said the province is looking forward to being the host of the next two major sports competitions, the 39th National Sports Competition Dec. 9-19 and the 29th National Disabled Games Jan. 23-27, 2011. He said three venues in Chonburi, Sriracha and Pattaya are being prepared for the events.

He added that the results of the October 2009 games will boost the morale of disabled athletes and see them go for the gold in earnest at the next meet. It also shows that Chonburi’s programs to help disabled citizens integrate into society are working.

“We all know that crime, drugs and other vices are problems occurring in youths and are the main problems of the country. They require cooperation from all parties to solve them and keep youth safe,” Senee said. “Sports activities are one alternative to support the youth to stay away from all vices. The province will support all parties to play sports, which will develop physical, moral, spiritual, and social aspects,” he added.

Pattaya Cricket Club taste first defeat

Bangkok Cricket Club are on their way to compiling a huge 233 for 5
from their 30 overs at Horseshoe Point, Sunday, March 14.

Pattaya Cricket Club hosted Bangkok Cricket Club a week last Sunday at the gorgeous Horseshoe Point on what was a seriously hot and sunny afternoon. The game was a 30 overs match starting at midday. PCC won the toss and elected to bowl first having won their previous two matches successfully chasing down a target.

On this occasion however, as the temperature rose so did the scoring rate and soon the visitors, with some typically wristy and Caribbean esk batting were racing to a score of huge proportions. Without two of their main bowlers PCC struggled to offer any control and Rohit and Ajay hit quick fire scores of 49 and 39 not out respectively. PCC stuck manfully to their task and the innings closed on 233 for 5 after the allotted 30 overs, with Samy being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 36 from his 6 overs.

Former Manchester United and England football player Steve Coppell, right, takes time out from his vacation to lend his support to the Pattaya Cricket Club. Here he poses for a photo with the PCC’s Earl Brown.

In reply PCC made a solid, if unspectacular start, with Mark Harrison and John Giuffrida scoring 35 and 48 respectively. At a 130 for 2 PCC were well placed for strong finish but a combination of tight bowling and frenzied fielding restricted the score to 181 for 9. Earl Brown and team manager Elfrado saw off the final few deliveries to, in their eyes secure the draw, but in all others eyes not reach the required target and PCC lost by 52 runs.

Last weekend saw PCC take on the much heralded Asian Star CC, again at what is fastly becoming a wonderful cricket ground at Horseshoe Point. It was the same format as the previous week but this time around PCC lost the toss and the opposition asked PCC to bowl first.

It was a similar story, as the opening batsmen put on 98 for the first wicket in rapid time. However, Leon Bouter, the Dutch international left arm spinner spun some magic and PCC got themselves back in the match. Now, whether it was the heat or the pressure is up for debate, but the fielding deteriorated into a shambles, with a series of dropped catches and missed run outs that cost vital runs and ASCC managed to finish with 225 for 7 from their allotted 30 overs. There were useful contributions from most batsmen but Wassiem, Dimple and Antu led the way.

PCC started badly as both openers and Hansie at number 3 were all dismissed with a score of only 37 on the board. The skipper Simon Philbrook looked comfortable at number 4 and after some imperious shots through the offside PCC looked in a good position to push for victory. However, a perfect inswinging yorker saw off the skipper and after Salman went for a determined 47 PCC finally closed their innings at 164 for 8, losing by 61 runs.

The next fixture at Horseshoe Point is the start of the Pattaya International Cricket Sixes Tournament on the 7th April and concluding with finals day on Saturday 10th April. The tournament is between 16 teams from around the world and promises to be a great fun event for players and supporters alike. PCC have two teams entered and we would like as much support as possible!

Griffiths storms home at Eastern Star

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, March 15, Rayong C.C. – Stableford.

With no one else around, the seven groups of golfers teed off well ahead of schedule and despite a couple of heavily sanded greens and a few lightly covered ones, the course at Rayong C.C. was enjoyed by all.

The best score of the day came in from Terry Redding in Division 2, winning the flight with 37 points. ‘Count Back’ Burnie had no back nine contestant this time and took second place one point behind the winner, while Darren Steffes finished third with 33 points.

Playing together in group three, Bill Hewitt won Division 1 with 36 points while Keith Hector finished two points behind in second place. Andy Mills took third spot after beating Barry Stirling on an 18/17 back nine count back after they both finished on 33 points.

An amazing four rollovers ensued to Pattana on Wednesday in the ‘2’s competition in Division 2, while with two rollovers in Division 1 there were four winners today; Don Head, Keith Hector, Arvo Narep and Bryan Rought.

Near Pins went in course order to Miss Nang, Raivo Velsberg and Terry Redding at the 5th; Raivo Velsberg and Ken Foster at the 7th; Don Head and Rudi Schaefer on the 12th; and to Bryan Rought and David Phillips at the 16th.

Wednesday, March 17, Pattana – Stableford.

It appeared to be a perfect day, weather wise, as we left Siam Cats in Jomtien but as we turned onto the 331 the skies began to darken in the direction we were heading. As we approached Amata the heavens finally opened and visibility went down to about 25 metres as torrential rain came down. We were all left wondering if we would still get a game today! When we reached Pattana however the sun was out with only a few clouds around. There were a few spots of rain standing on the first tee but they dispersed after about 5 minutes.

We had 9 groups out today playing the A and B courses, which brought a sigh of relief from many for this order of play. Raivo Velsberg won the top flight with a solid 34 points ahead of Frank Kelly and John Mcloone who both recorded 31 point rounds; Frank took second place courtesy of a better back nine.

In the second division it was a close contest between Cully Monks and Jim Connelly for first place after they both tied on 33 points. Cully finally got the nod with a better 19/15 count back. Arvo Narep meanwhile took third place on 31 points.

Joe Kubon was the joint top scorer of the day with 35 points to win the third division ahead of Darren Steffes (34pts) and Ian Hart (31pts). Finally to the Ladies flight where Miss Kung proved too hot to handle and was an easy winner with 35 points ahead of Nar Hector in second place on 31.

Near Pins in course order went to Andy Mills (A3); Miss Nang, Jim Connelly and Joe Kubon (A8); Miss Kung, Barry Stirling and Joe Kubon (B3); and Raivo Velsberg and David Phillips (B7)

As expected on this course the ‘2’s were hard to come by and there were none in Division 1 and with four rollovers in Division 2, hopefully there will be some smiles at Plutaluang next Monday. Miss Kung recorded the only Ladies ‘2’ in three months with a birdie on the third hole on the B course.

Back at the presentation there was a warm welcome to Terry Cowell after his return from the UK and also to newcomers Miss Kung in the ladies division and Andy Baber in Division 1.

Friday, March 19, Eastern Star – Stableford.

We were told there was a 60 per cent chance of rain in this area today and there were many dark clouds in the distance as we approached Eastern Star. These soon dispersed however as we walked towards the first tee and the first group teed off bang on time.

A hot and sultry day was endured by all, but this did not stop Alan Griffiths with 21 points on the back nine from winning Division 1 with 38 in total and two ahead of Barry Traynor in second place. Mikael Andersson filled out the podium in third with 34 points. After six weeks in the doldrums in the UK, Terry Cowell returned to score 6 points on the front nine and 21 on the back to perhaps put him back in the picture next week!

Frank Weiand finished third in Division 2 with 31 points, Jim Lane was second on 33 and the winner with 34 points was Dennis Scougall.

In the Ladies flight Miss Nom was not a happy chappie, losing out on a 15/19 count back to Miss Noi after they both tied on 33 points, but they are still on speaking terms.

The Eastern Star ‘2’s competition, which goes from week to week, was shared today in Division 1 by Grant Cadell after his birdie on the 3rd and Alan Howell who birdied the 13th. There are three rollovers in Division 2 to next Friday and unbelievably there were no nearest the pins today in Division 2 on any par three.

Elsewhere near pins went to Grant Cadell (No3); Barry Traynor (No6); Alan Howell (No13); and Miss Nom and Dennis Scougall (No17).

“Buyer Beware”

Dear Editor

I have been accused recently of having a weekly whinge in my sports reports at something or other in connection with golf. I suppose this is no different except there is a moral to the story so I beg you to read on.

Recently a group of players asked advice as to what course they might visit in the Pattaya area, something that would offer them a challenge. A name of a course was supplied so off they went for the day.

I have no wish to name and shame them here, but on meeting them the following day I asked how things had gone only to be advised that they had a terrible day because all the greens had been heavily dressed with sand and were virtually unplayable and that they would never be returning to the club again.

My first thought was that you did say that you wanted a challenge. But on a more serious note I asked if they had spoken to anyone at the club on the day. They responded no as they did not want to cause any fuss.

I contacted someone that I knew at the club by e-mail as to what had been reported to me and asked why the players had not been advised of the state of the greens before play. I was told that the club had notice boards on display in the foyer area of the club giving information like costs etc., and that a notice regarding the condition of the greens read “top soil.”

I was at a loss on what to think, as I must admit that the term “top soil” does not readily imply itself to me as heavy sanding. I pointed out to the course that I thought their notice was not very clear and suggested that maybe they should change the text to read “top dressed’ or “top dressed/sand”. I am not sure if that will happen.

My other thought was just how many golfers actually look at the signs in a club foyer unless of course they say something like “free golf” or special offer.” However, the moral of the tale is really “Buyer Beware”, as you are never really sure what you are going to get until you get out on the course, do you.

Russell Exley has best of the week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, March 15,
Pattana B & C - Stableford

Div. 1 (0-15)
1st Alan Hanlon (12) 36pts
2nd Julie Donnestad (3) 35pts
3rd Alan Griffiths (12) 35pts
4th Rick Schramm (9) 35pts
Div. 2 (16+)
1st B.J. Smith (24) 37pts
2nd Jun Ishihara (16) 36pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 34pts
4th Mike Sanders (19) 30pts

This course is starting to play a lot shorter now that the wet weather has eased up, with the ball taking some roll off the tee and the greens holding still. This all made for a much easier day for the players which left the CSS at 72 for the day.

Alan Hanlon made sure it was a happy last day for a while with The Haven, as he kept it on the short stuff for most of the day and played the rest fairly steadily to return a level par round and take the win by one from a three-way tie in second, in the first division. The podium placings were sorted out by a count back with Julie Donnestad taking it on the back six by a better score of 11 to 10 over Alan Griffiths after they had both tied on 17 on the nine. Rick Schramm was consigned to fourth place with the worst of the three back nines at 16.

The second division was also very tight with B.J. Smith at last coming back to playing off his handicap and taking the top spot by a single stroke from Jun Ishihara in second. Shuichi Kodaka took third a couple of shots behind and four in front of Mike Sanders, who won the count back with Stephen Lewis by 15 to 14.

There were no 2’s in the second division but Dave Stockman, Russell Exley and Julie Donnestad shared the rollover in the first division.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back members Greg Gawron and Paul Simpson and also had farewells for Alan Hanlon, Bob Heath and Jim Slattery.

Wednesday, March 17,
Green Valley - Stableford

Div. 1 (0–16)
1st Russell Exley (8) 40pts
2nd Julie Donnestad (3) 38pts
3rd Jun Ishihara (16) 38pts
4th Dave Stockman (6) 35pts
Div. 2 (17+)
1st Orawan Meeraka (33) 38pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 34pts
3rd Stephen Lewis (21) 30pts
4th Ole Stamnes (30) 29pts

Once again two divisions were required with the cut coming at 16 as many of the low handicappers are away or having returned home, but the standard was still of a high order with three of the top spots in the first division taken by single figure players.

They were led in by Russell Exley, who is starting to make another run for a category 1 handicap, with a score that was both good enough to win and also attract a cut of a shot for next week’s competitions, at four under handicap, with a round that did not have a six in it.

Julie Donnestad has already reached the lowest handicap category and is getting ever closer to that scratch rating with another good result that included a gross 35 over the inward half to take second place with a better count back of 20 over Jun Ishihara at 19 in third. Dave Stockman just edged out four other players for fourth spot with a back nine of 20.

In the second division Orawan Meeraka took her first win out of Soi 13 after many attempts and deservedly attracted a good round of applause for taking her division by four points from Shuichi Kodaka in second. Stephen Lewis took his second podium of the week another four points back and one ahead of Ole Stamnes, who just scrapped on to the prize list in his last outing before returning to Norway for a rest.

Yasuo Suzuki had the only ‘2’ in the first division to sweep the pool, and Jun Ishihara did the same in the second division.

Back at The Haven Paul Hartley, Bruce Kusyk and John Dahlseng were welcomed back and there was a farewell for Ole Stamnes.

Friday, March 19,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Yasuo Suzuki (12) 39pts
2nd Rick Schramm (9) 38pts
3rd Julie Donnestad (3) 37pts
4th Russell Exley (8) 36pts
5th Stephen Lewis (21) 36pts

With the season almost at a close, the numbers are starting to drop, but there were almost enough for two divisions (30 players) for the always popular regular visit to Khao Kheow off the yellow tees, arguably the best course that we play.

Yasuo Suzuki is a very popular player and an even more popular winner if the attendance at the prize giving was any indication, with only one of the day’s contestants missing when a very bewildered Yasuo blew the horn following the announcement of his latest win. He remained slightly shell shocked well into the evening and only recovered after the bar had provided a special free issue to those remaining, of Yakitori chicken specially marinated in sake, and downing several more beers.

Rick Schramm took second place with a two under handicap round to leave Julie Donnestad, again under par, in third, a shot back and taking her third prize of the week.

Russell Exley returned another solid card at level to claim fourth place with a better count back of 18 to 16 over Stephen Lewis who thus just missed out his third podium in succession but could still claim to have had a good week.

Rick Schramm scored the only ‘2’ in the first division and Arthur Todd had the lone one in the second division.

Prior to the presentations Ian Hedley, Jim Donaldson, Tony Rose, Satoru Shibata and Masamoto Kuramechi were welcomed as new members and Arthur Todd and Kinya Akiyama were welcomed back. There were also farewells for Kaneo Watanabe and Jun Ishihara.

PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

Peter Blackburn

Monday, March 15, Pattana B & C – Stableford

Welcome back to Dave Neal from Birmingham, UK and greetings to 6 handicapper Michael Winterburn from Vancouver, Canada. The numbers were once again down as is to be expected at this time of year and 29 of us assembled at Café Kronborg in readiness for the trip to Pattana. The Admiral’s thumb was still painful so he decided to rest it for the week and resume next Monday.

Frank Pilkington, left, receives the Café Kronborg Monthly Mug from Bjarne.

Having departed spot on 0815 we arrived at the classy Pattana 50 minutes later and as usual went through the arduous process of once more having each of our PSC membership cards photocopied as we paid our green fees. If someone could please explain why this process is necessary it would be greatly appreciated.

The course did not appear to be overly busy and our first group was able to tee off 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 0940. The golf course was as usual in great shape although the greens were at times inconsistent where speed is concerned but other than that it was a pleasure to play this fine course.

Playing off the yellow tees shortened the holes somewhat and that was fairly obvious as the scorecards came in afterwards, particularly in A Flight. It was rather hot with little wind so several stops for drinks were necessary but we managed to complete our round in four and a half hours.

Aussie Stu Rifkin took out the A Flight with a whopping 43 points from the colorful Walter Baechli who also had a great score of 41 points. Canadian Michael Winterburn finished in third place and fourth & fifth places were decided by a count back with yours truly just edging out Brian Gabe.

Veteran Hugh O’Donnell was victorious in the B Flight over Frenchman Joseph Bensoussan with Jan Lovgreen in third spot. A three-way count back resulted in Graham Buckingham just missing out to John Dahlseng who finished fourth and Mike Winfield fifth.

Stu Rifkin’s recruitment drive resulted in many new members into the “Compass Club” and the hat was awarded to Dave Neal on a count back from Carole Kubicki.

A Flight
1st Stu Rifkin (17) 43pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 41pts
3rd Michael Winterburn (6) 38pts
4th Peter Blackburn (14) 36pts
5th Brian Gabe (16) 36pts
B Flight
1st Hugh O’Donnell (23) 38pts
2nd Joseph Bensoussan (19) 37pts
3rd Jan Lovgreen (22) 35pts
4th John Dahlseng (18) 34pts
5th Mike Winfield (21) 34pts

Near Pins: B3 Robert Christensen, B7 Graham Buckingham, C2 John Dahlseng, C7 Mike Allidi.

Thursday, March 18, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain –Monthly Mug/Stroke

Numbers were down somewhat again with just 24 golfers ready to battle it out for the Café Kronborg Monthly Mug. The Admiral decided to give his injured thumb the full week off and will be back playing with us next Monday at Treasure Hill.

Welcome to Mashi Kaneta who is becoming a bit of a regular with us just lately and good to see Frank “Turbo” Pilkington and Henry O’Brien joining us.

Departing Café Kronborg right on time at 0815 we arrived at Phoenix twenty-five minutes later and were resigned to the fact that we would have quite a wait before our 1000 tee off time. However, persistence with the Starter eventually paid off and we managed to get our first group away at 0950.

The weather was very hot with a breeze appearing now and again but the course was as ever in great shape and the greens were firm and true. Every available opportunity was taken to keep up our fluid intake up and we managed to complete our round in just under four and a half hours.

The Café Kronborg Monthly Mug was well won by visitor Frank “Turbo” Pilkington with a net 68. Mashi Kaneta was victorious in the A Flight, winning on a count back from Doug Maiko. The consistent Richard Kubicki finished in third place with Per-Olav Baarli beating yours truly on a count back for fourth place.

B Flight was won by Carole Kubicki with Graham Buckingham finishing in second place. Jan Lovgreen was third and Irishman Henry O”Brien finished fourth.

After his 43 points on Monday Stu Rifkin went from the penthouse to the outhouse and was awarded the “Compass Hat” for his efforts on the day.

B Flight

Ladies
1st Sim Davis net 72

Near Pins: No 2 Peter Henshaw, No 9 Roll over, No12 Jack Spencer and No16 Ian Grant.

Sunday’s medal winners: Sim Davis, left, and Gavin Knox,

Green Valley was laid out a little different this Sunday as the scores might indicate, also the greens were lightning fast and most tees were further back than normal. The players had to contend with a strong wind and the extreme heat, but it suited Gavin ‘The Brylcream boy’ Knox down to the ground. Gavin, who is on a roll at the moment, posted a winning net 68 to advance to the gold medal later in the year.

John ‘the Big Easy’ Hartigan nearly made it two medals in a row as he was just two strokes back in second place. The young kiwi Brad Dippie filled the flight a further two shots back.

There were no fireworks in the ‘big boys’ flight as Paul Bray and Mark Wood were knotted on net 73, with Paul’s inner nine giving him the flight win. Adi Mayer rounded out the flight two shots adrift.

Sim ‘Sugar babe’ Davis joined Gavin in the gold medal, posting a fine even par round to win the Ladies Medal

One wonders what was on Christy ‘good’ Knights mind as he turned up at the presentation in his dancing gear. Maybe it was the thought of a tango with Mango.

Monday, March 15, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

1st Fergus Obrien (23) 34pts
2nd Pat Hanafin (12) 30pts
3rd Brian Cooper (25) 29pts

Irishmen ruled this day as long time vacationers Fergus O’Brien and Pat Hanafin took the first and second step on the podium. Brian ‘Mini’ Cooper rounded out the flight and Fergus made sure it was his day as he posted the only ‘2’.

Wednesday, March 17, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Reagan (10) 40pts
2nd Gavin Knox (13) 38pts
3rd Marc Napier (7) 38pts
B Flight
1st Lou Zig Zag (20) 38pts
2nd Jum Karagit (18) 37pts
3rd Jim Elphick (23) 36pts

Near Pins: No 3 Marc Napier, No 5 Jum Karagit, No 10 Peter Henshaw, No 17 Gavin Knox.

As the storm clouds gathered, the Lewiinski’s gang teed off on the tough St Andrews track for the annual St Patrick’s Day bash, and perhaps it was only right that an Irish man named, you got it, Patrick, should post the day’s best score, a scintillating 40 points using only sixteen of the eighteen holes. Gavin ‘The Brylcream Boy’ got the better of Marc Napier on a count back as they both posted 38 points for second and third in that order.

Lou har sip Zig Zag won the minor flight and a free taxi to the airport (pity he missed the flight) with a steady 38 points, Jum ‘Sugar babe’ Karagit took second a shot adrift, and Jersey Jim Elphick filled the flight a further shot back.

Jum Karagit, Marc Napier and Seamus Cotter shared the ‘2’s pot. The ‘Brylcream Boy’ won nearest the pin on hole 17 but failed to register a score on the hole.

Spare a thought if you will for Dominic Downing whose wife’s ball hit his ball with her approach shot as his lay near the green on the first hole and knocked it on to the green. Dominic replaced the ball and incurred a two shot penalty. A par on that hole would have given him second place in the top flight. To cap it all Dominic and Anne were celebrating their Ruby wedding anniversary; Dominic gave his lovely wife tickets for a five day stay on Kho Samui and Anne gave Dominic a rule book.

Back at Lewiinski’s, St Pat’s Day was celebrated in good fashion with plenty of sherbets. The Lou-iinski’s free draw was drawn as the winner walked in the bar, none other than the Captain himself Seamus Cotter. The Jing Jai kids benefitted to the tune of 35,000 baht.

Friday, March 19, The Emerald - Stableford

2nd Eddy Beilby (15) 35pts

B Flight
1st Geoff Kubas (18) 39pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (17) 33pts
3rd John Heaney (18) 32pts

Marc Napier was the only golfer in the senior flight to better his handicap; Marc put together a fine 39 points to win the ‘big boys’ flight and co man of the match honors. Marc left the lower steps of the podium to be sorted out by count back between Eddy ‘the Eagle’ and Dominic ‘the Rule Book’ Downing, both carding 35 points. Anne had the day off.

Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas hit all the right notes to win the junior flight and co man of the match as he equaled Marc’s senior flight total. Peter ‘The President’ put together 33 points for second spot, his card showing three no scoring holes. John Heaney filled the flight a shot back.

Paul Bray and Vic Hester split the ‘2’s pot.

A busy day as usual with the course playing well saw Russell Exley take the first division in fine style following a doughty battle with the evergreen Charles Sheppard. John Sewell, playing off his 6 handicap, took third place on count back with a steady 31 points from Steve Mulberry and Jeremy Massey. Steve, never far from the leaders, just edged Jeremy who is enjoying a well deserved break from his seafaring duties.

In the second division Alec Hoare scorched away from the opposition with a mighty 43 points. Shaun Skeehan followed with a very respectable 36 points from Russell Gilroy in third place.
The ‘2’s were shared by Russell Gilroy and John Sewell.

Pleasant playing conditions set the scene for a lovely day of golf on Sunday. In the first division Wayne Waywood took the spoils with a steady round of 36 points. He was closely followed by Alec Hoare, who is rarely far off the pace, and today pipped Jeremy Massey on count back, both on 35. Jeremy is finding his land legs after a spell of sea duty and is becoming a regular on the podium. Charles Sheppard was only a further point away in fourth place, beating the ever popular Irishman Joe McArdle on count back over the back 6.

Richard Dobson, past Scottish Motoring Champion, was in overdrive today taking the second division chequered flag by a whisker from Wayne Harman. Both players scored a magnificent 40 points each and were only separated on count back. Russell Gilroy took third place on count back from Don Everett, completing a good day for Western Australia.

The 2’s were shared by Richard Dobson, Jeremy Massy, and Robert Hanson.

Pilkington wins by a street at Greenwood

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top four: Derek Brook, Mike O’Brien,
Frank Pilkington and Don Carmody.

Thomas Cotton

Tuesday, March 16, Greenwood G.C. - Stableford

Lately at Tropical Bert’s more and more golfers have been turning away from meat due to its very deleterious effects it has on one’s health and libido. Most golfers at Bert’s are way past worrying about their libidos, but their health is still important, sometimes even more important than how much they are paying for a round of golf.

Anyways, increasingly we find that the sight of a bright green fairway is enough to get the juices flowing and for the scores to start rising. And so it was a week last Tuesday as the herbivores once more put on a dazzling display of golfing prowess, with Frank PIlkington leading the herd and your correspondent straggling behind. Another famous herb, Motown Man, Brian Gabe, however, finished out of the points; it was rumored that he had a hot dog over the weekend.

This day our numbers were augmented by some members from the British Legion whom our Captain had persuaded to join. But amongst the shrinking group of carnivores at Bert’s, Mashi really struggled and his playing partner, Steve Hamstad was heard to say that he was disenthralled with Mashi’s play. This was the term Lincoln used on General McClellan after the Battle of Antietam just before firing him. However, Mashi is still leading Bert’s for the “Golfer of the Year” award.

A Flight (0-18)
1st Mike O’Brien 34pts
2nd Derek Brook 34pts
3rd Richard Kubicki 34pts

1st Frank Pilkington 39pts
2nd Don Carmody 32pts
3rd Thomas Cotton 32pts

Fischer beats the weather and the field

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Mother Nature had mercy on the golfers from Three Sisters this past 17th of March (St. Patrick’s Day) at the Pattaya Country Club.

Wednesday winner Michael Fischer, left, with runner-up Dale Murphy.

Fifteen players began teeing off at 0630 with heavy overcast skies keeping the temperature down and a slight breeze making for a really nice golf outing. Some portions of the fairways were soaked while several greens seemed to need watering. As the last group came off the skies opened up and a real gully-washer came down.

Sheltered back at Caddy Shack II, Herbie Ishinaga provided snacks and spicy dogs for the hungry players. A tally of the cards showed Michael Fischer coming in first on 36 points with Dale Murphy close behind with 35. Bob Benda also had 35 points but lost on the count back. Sus Ige, Arnold Van DerGraaf, Jim Hern and Gordon McKnight chased the leaders to no avail.

Mark Thomas tames Siam Old Course in the rain

Panita’s Golf Bar (Siam Golf Club Members Bar)

Despite a very wet start to last Wednesday’s golf day at Siam Old Course from Panita’s Bar, Mark Thomas was up to the task and shot a magnificent 73 gross (net 68) in the wet conditions. Mark, who plays off a 5 handicap, did not let the very wet conditions affect his game with 3 birdies, 2 bogies and 1 double adding up to a fantastic 40 points to win comfortably and leave second placed Micky Leighton (34pts) and Nicky Falconer (32pts) well in his wake, to take the top spot, which is quite a common occurrence these days for Mark. At least he can look forward to his new handicap now!

Wednesday winner Mark Thomas, centre, with runner up Micky Leighton, right, and third placed Nicky Falconer, left.

Les Charles puts the Aussies on top at Siam

Australian based Les Charles headed the field last Friday, March 19, a day that saw a vast improvement in the weather at the Siam Old Course. Les led the pack home with a total of 35 points to hold off the challenges of Roger Rush and Garry Blackburne, both with 33 points but with Roger taking second on count back. This was the first time that Les has won this year and he is obviously getting back on top of his game. After the game all the players enjoyed complimentary Pizza at Panita’s Bar.

Panita’s Bar golf group are now playing at Siam Old Course every Wednesday and Friday at 10.00am, Plus! Every Monday for the next 4 weeks at 10.30am, just come along to the bar and register to play (limited space). PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Monday, March 15, Plutaluang – Stableford

Off to Plutaluang on Monday where we played the South & East course which was in good condition although the greens were slow.

With one flight it was tight at the top and first place went to Derek Waterworth (H/cap 33) with 33 points and 16 on the back nine to just edge out Tony Chetland (18) into second place on count back. Jim Fortune (24) took third place with 32 points and in fourth was Graham Hisiket (12) with 31.

Near pins went to Keith Ken Graham and Ian.

Wednesday, March 17, Rayong C.C. - Stableford

For St. Patrick’s Day it was off to Rayong C.C. where the course was in good condition and the greens medium fast but running very true.

With two flights (0-21) & (22-up) it was in the B Flight that the best score was recorded, Alex Meldrum (36) coming home in first place with a fine 40 points. Second spot went to Chris Gee (22) with 34 points and in third was Brian Ferrigno (24) with 29.

A Flight was very tight with Ian Painter (19) taking the spoils on 34 points, beating Ken Hole (16) and Paddy Devereux (21) on count back, Ken getting the nod for second place.

Near pins went to Paddy Chris Brian and Chris.

After the golf it was back to Mulligans for some food and great entertainment and a good day was had by all.

‘General’ Jack up to the challenge

The 4th Outback Golf Bar Chiang Mai Challenge

Monday, March 15, Alpine Resort CM - Stableford

The Chiang Mai connection continues with a record 64 people on this 4th trip to the north, comprising of 46 golfers and 18 partners, wives and sightseers. After arriving in Chiang Mai ahead of schedule and collecting our clubs and small bags, we were off to the Porn Ping Hotel to find all the registration procedures and room allocation already completed.

Leaving the hotel at 8.15am, the first day of the 4th Chiang Mai Challenge was at the wonderfully refurbished Alpine resort, about 40 minutes out of Chiang Mai. As we approached the course, the early morning sun tried to break through the haze and mist - much of the haze was caused by the heavy burning off of leaves and grass for miles around and the lack of wind to clear it away. The course looked beautifully pristine, what we could see of it, and everybody was looking forward to their game.

We teed off a little late but the starter made up for lost time by putting a couple of the groups out off the tenth, it wasn’t a quick round but it was comfortable enough on a course that was reasonably quiet. Visibility was a distinct problem and one relied heavily on the caddies to spot the ball but the course was in excellent nick and got the nod of approval all of the Outbackers and guests.

Joint top scores came from Vic Barton (39) to win the guests (G) Div B and Kathy Doody (39) to win the Outbackers (O) Div B; with other scores of note coming from Norm ‘the chatter’ Cheetham (37), Div A (G) winner and Ian Heddle (37pts) Div A (O) winner, just edging out Bruce Milner with the same score. The only other lady in the field, Suzi Lawton, also featured high up the leaderboard taking second place in Div B (O) with a fine 38.

There were six ‘2’s from Ian Heddle, Bruce Milner, Norm Cheetham, Pete Lenoury, and Suzi & John Lawton.

1st Norm Cheetham (15) 37pts

Tuesday, March 16, Maejo CM - Stableford

All 46 players turned out for the second day of the Challenge at the spectacular Maejo course. It remains a favourite with many, even though the course grass greens bear a resemblance to the Navy’s and many of the par fives are a horseshoe shape, making the judgement of distance extremely difficult.

It has some great holes, particularly perhaps the par 4 fifth, requiring an accurate and long tee shot up the hill followed by a long iron or wood for most, across a large lake into a tricky green protected by a bunker at the front. Just to really get your attention it’s OB right and if you’re long – it’s unputtable!

Thirty-five was the most popular score of the day, with five guests in Div A involved in a second, third and fourth place count back, behind Steve Mann, the winner on 37.

Thirty-five from Wayne Harman was also enough to win Div B from Vic Barton (cut one shot from Monday after his 39) but still doing well with 34.

The Outbacker’s first division was won by Tom Byrne on count back from Peter Lenoury, both with 35 points from Chris Davisson & Murray Hart with 34 apiece whilst the second division was taken by John Cogan. Yes you’ve guessed it – with 35 points, from Geoff Doody on 32.

Having fared so well on the first day at Alpine Resort, this was a much tougher track for the ladies as they struggled with the course conditions and length.

There were another bunch of ‘2’s going forward to the last day coming from Pete Lenoury, Muzza, John Lawton, Jack Moseley (2), Wayne Waywood, Mark Rossiter and Syd Lebron.

Div A (0–15) Guests

Wednesday, March 17, Royal Chiang Mai - Stableford

Thirty-two turned out to play in the ‘rest day’ tournament at the parkland Royal Chiang Mai course. We were warmly greeted as ever and were able to tee off early on an otherwise deserted course. After the previous day’s bristly greens at Maejo, it was difficult to adjust to the slick greens here and maybe generally, with the exception of one or two, the scores reflect just that.

Chris Dopp put together one of his best rounds ever, if not the best, to score a magnificent 42 points to win Div B from Joe Mooneyham (38pts) who was delighted that his swing had shown some signs of returning. Steve Mann, who’s always there or thereabouts, topped Div A with 35 from another Aussie, Ron Drummond with the same score. Bruce McAdam and Kathy Doody shared the same score in Div C, Bruce winning on count back, from John Lawton (33) and Chad (32); who said he would dream about the 2 foot putt he missed on the last.

There were six ‘2’s from Bob Philp, Geoff Doody, Chad, Murray Hart, Syd Lebron and Chris Dopp.

Div A (0–12)
1st Steve Mann (11) 35pts
2nd Ron Drummond (5) 35pts

Thursday, March 18, Chiang Mai Highlands - Stableford

The third and final day of the Chiang Mai Challenge turned out to be a closely fought affair with probably one of the most unexpected and amazing overall result.

Jack Moseley, centre, with Tom Byrne, left, and ‘Billy’ Fitzgerald, right.

This is a classy course; it bears a distinct resemblance to Siam Plantation but with much more water and maybe slightly easier greens. However, they still have their run off areas to whisk the ball away from any inaccurate iron and are heavily protected at the front by deeply sculptured bunkers. The course was not long, about 6,200 yards, and the scoring was nothing short of exceptional.

The field went out in reverse order with the leaders; Vic Barton (73pts), Fred Gemme (71pts), Norm Cheetham (70pts) and Suzi Lawton (69pts) going out last. Other interesting groupings included the fourth last group of Capt’ Bob (64pts), General Jack (63pts) and Chad 64pts playing with Billy Fitzgerald (65pts) as well as fellow Outbackers; Rosco (61pts), Muzza (62pts), John Lawton (62pts) and B1 (61pts).

Pat Quinlivan who had been ‘fined’ the day before for forgetting his clubs, put that behind him to take Div A (G) with 39 points from Wayne & Steve both with 37. Billy Fitzgerald put together the round of his life to amass 41 points (17 out & 24 back) to win Div B (G) but only on count back from another great round from Pat Lamont.

In the same group as Billy were Capt’ Bob and Jack, battling it out with Jack turning on 22 points and Bob on 21 – both 37 gross. Bob took the lead after a birdie 4 pointer on the tenth where Jack missed his putt for par. However, after a costly three putt followed by a wayward drive, Bob fell away on the back nine to leave Jack to rack up another 22 points, finishing birdie, par, birdie – for a total of 44 points, his best ever 74 gross to win Div A (O). Second place went to Rosco, with another great 41 points, the third of the day; Tom Bryne took third with 39 and Bob ended up fourth on 38.

Div B (O) was won by Kathy Doody with the second highest score of the day, 42 points, from Chad back in second on 35; and by now everybody was trying to work out just who had won the Challenge.

There were another twelve ‘2’s from Pete Lenoury, Tom Byrne, Bob Philp, Kathy Doody had two and so did Ian Heddle; also Syd Lebron, Jock Drummond, Billy Fitzgerald, Ed O’Connor and Ian Button.

Div A (0–15) Guests (G)
1st Pat Quinlivan (13) 39pts
2nd Wayne Waywood (15) 37pts
3rd Steve Mann (11) 37pts
4th Bob Maloney (12) 36pts
Div B (16+) Guests (G)
1st William Fitzgerald (19) 41pts
2nd Pat Lamont (24) 41pts
3rd Don Everett (26) 38pts
4th Ron Meldrum (25) 35pts
Div A (0–15) Outbackers (O)
1st Jack Moseley (10) 44pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (15) 41pts
3rd Tom Byrne (13) 39pts
4th Bob Philp (7) 38pts
Div B (16+) (O)
1st Kathy Doody (19) 42pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (18) 35pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (16) 31pts
4th Geoff Doody (21) 31pts

Before announcing the winner and overall result, the Outback would like to thank all participants, both the many Aussie visitors and Outbackers alike for a most enjoyable trip and the tremendous gamesmanship and good spirit shown throughout. It was another great success and we shall eagerly look forward to the 5th Challenge in October, this time incorporating Chiang Rai as well.

Capt’ Bob & Jack would also like to thank Jamie Milner, for his generous donation of the Chiang Mai trophy and Syd Lebron for his hand-crafted Outback Golf Bar putter, which will remain at the bar and will be played for in a new annual tournament, to be announced soon. Also Ian Button for the beautifully crafted Outback Golf Bar silver ball markers and the two gold ones given to Bob & Jack: they (the silver ones) were put up as near pin prizes at Chiang Mai Highlands; one being won by Ian Heddle and the other two by Capt’ Bob, who has donated them back as futures prizes.

Ian was our ‘fines master’ adopted for the first time on this trip for everybody’s indiscretions, mistakes and whatever else maybe thought up at 20 baht a hit and given to the drivers who shipped us around all week. Thanks for that Ian.

Last but not least; thanks to Joe & Chad and in particular, Suzi, for their help over the last few days with the organisation and the scores.

Probably the surprise of the week was Jack Moseley, who came from absolutely nowhere, lying in sixteenth place after two days, and swept through the field to win the challenge on count back (day 3 score), with a total of 107 points from Tom Byrne (third in October 2009). It was a most unlikely result given his form of late but it was the best round he has ever played, even though he said afterwards - he left a couple of putts out there. Billy Fitzgerald, who also fired his best ever round was third with 106.

Overall Results: 1st Jack Moseley (10) 107pts: 2nd Tom Byrne (13) 107pts; 3rd William Fitzgerald (17) 10pts; 4th Steve Mann (11) 106pts; 5th Vic Barton (19) 105pts; 6th Ian Heddle (3) 104pts; 7th Fred Gemme (14) 104pts; 8th Rosco Langoulant (15) 102pts; 9th Bob Philp (7) 102pts; 10th Bob Maloney (12) 102pts.

5S         P              5N           P

6H        P              ?

The bidding needs a little explanation:  2C is of course strong, showing 22+ high card points or 8+ playing tricks.  2N is a step response showing 10+ high card points - it is conventional and does not mean a no trump type hand.  3N on the other hand does show a no trump type hand and a minimum range for a 2C opener, i.e. 22 to 24 high card points.  4N is asking for aces and 5S shows three.  5N asks for kings and 6H shows two.

Sitting South you know that you are missing one king and missing about three additional high card points somewhere.  So what do you bid now?  When this hand was played, two tables opted for 6N and one table (with a different bidding sequence) ended up in 6D.

This was the full deal:

                        S: AK6

                        H: AQJ10

                        D: 85

                        C: AKJ3

S: Q10753    S: J42

H: 765                               H: K983

D: J63                                D: 72

C: 97                                  C: 10842

                        S: 98

                        H: 42

                        D: AKQ1094

                        C: Q65

Thirteen tricks are cold: six diamonds, four clubs, two high spades and the ace of hearts.  So, should the grand slam have been bid rather than the small slam?  I believe the answer is yes!

South has an almost certain six diamond tricks, particularly when partner shows at least two diamonds by bidding a no trump shape.  Since partner has opened 2C, surely partner has seven tricks to contribute.  The chances are high that the grand slam can be made without a finesse for the missing king, but at the very worst, it should only be a finesse away.  So, my answer to the question at the beginning of this column is that South should immediately be thinking: “if we have all the aces, then this is 7N—or 7D if I want to be cautious”.

Bully Byrne bashes the boys

PSC golf with The Phoenix Tuesday Group

Mike Gerrard

Tuesday, March 16, Phoenix - Stableford

Yes, it’s that rogue from the auld country coming up trumps again. Very soon he will be going back to Ireland again where no doubt he will not be able to play as often (and in such pleasant weather) and he will become mortal like the rest of us again.

A blistering 39 points gave Hugh Byrne the first prize (you will forgive me for not inserting a photo this time. We are fed up of seeing his big grin every week). In second place was the ever consistent Gary Blackburne with 34 points and in joint third were Bob Neylon, Ken Akester and yours truly, all with 32 points but with Bob having the better back nine.

Technical prizes went to Roger Ison (2) Ken Akester and your humble correspondent, with anyone else who attended receiving a lucky draw prize as well as their first drink free.

Baan Jing Jai Charity Scramble

Time is fast catching up on our organisers of the charity event on Tuesday March 30. There are still a few tee times open and the format is a two-ball scramble of any combination of man and woman alike (plus anyone who is not too sure which side of the fence they are on yet. We can toss a coin to decide which tee they play from).

The entrance fee for the competition is 600 baht which will go towards the aim of raising 50,000 baht for new drinking water facilities at the Baan Jing Jai orphanage in Pattaya. Any guest or non Phoenix member playing on the day can enjoy a special green fee rate of 800 baht plus 250 baht caddy fee and carts are priced at 700 for 18 holes and 350 for nine holes and two players can share if so desired.

Official handicaps are required to qualify for the main prizes, but anyone without a handicap can play for many technical prizes and be eligible for the lucky draw at the presentation (including free buffet) after the game. First tee times are at 10.24am.

For further information call myself, Mike Gerrard, on 087 091 7565 or Bob Neylon on 081 916 1853 or Stuart Gordon on 085 630 7402.

Tough times at Greenwood

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Greenwood on Tuesday, March 16, to play a stableford competition over the C and A nines from which the white tees were back to their furthest extent, making the course play to its full length of 6,600 yards. The track was in good condition but the C greens were a little slower compared to the back nine and this had an effect on the scores.

February’s “Player of the Month” David Thomas, right, receives the plaudits from Rabbi and proudly displays the logo of his fortunate sponsor.

The two flights were divided at 13 and under and in the second flight Richard Dobson, the clear leader at the turn, only managed to share third place with Fredy Braun and Tim Lazecki on 31 points each. A point ahead was Larry Slattery, steady again as usual, and the flight winner was Mr Len with 33 hard earned points.

In the top flight scores were similar with Paul McNally shooting the day’s best gross of 78 to share third place on 34 points with Rick Schramm and Steve Jones. There were joint winners in the flight as Tony Lambert and Jon Haugen went head-to-head from the start to finish level with 35 points.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and Steve Godfrey picked up the Booby Bevy for his vain efforts at mastering the course using a five iron off the tees, something with which he is comfortable on his home track, a nine hole extended pitch-and-putt course in Australia. Playing with the “big boys” he admitted to finding the task harder than expected. He wasn’t the only one of course! Greenwood off the long white tees is a tough nut to crack.

“Mr. Consistency” on top at Khao Kheow

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to the beautiful course at Khao Kheow on Thursday, March 18, which was in excellent condition, to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines. The day was splendidly organised and marshalled and the course currently represents as good a bargain in terms of “vfm” as any on the Eastern Seaboard.

The field was divided into two flights at thirteen and under, an indication in itself of the quality of the field challenging the wits of course designer Pete Dye. Larry Slattery, currently in-form and consistent, took the second flight with 37 points, three ahead of runner-up Margaret Wilkinson and a further two ahead of third placed Jack Robertson.

In the top flight Tony Thorne battled the headwind on the tough front nine to stand on the ninth tee all square with the card but stuttered on the back nine to finish with a winning score of 37 points also. Alan Hanlon was second with 34 points and the only consolation for the day’s best gross winner, Paul McNally, was a share of third place with Rick Schramm on 33 points.

Kasuo Takimoto took the ‘2’s pot in style with a sandy birdie on B8 and Margaret Wilkinson won the Booby Bevy award for her 21 - 13 split when she really should have consolidated to win her flight.

At the presentation back in Soi Buakhao, David Thomas received the February “Player of the Month” award for some very steady golf as he draws his current visit to a close, something he has dreamed about in the long days of exile in WA and something he has to look forward to again in the near future. Never mind pal, Khao Kheow will still be here to offer the ultimate golfing challenge when you rejoin us!

Friends of the Pattaya Golf Society may wish to note that the group’s website has been renamed to avoid the malicious sabotage attentions of a jealous local golf tour operator and we can currently be found at http://www.thepattayagolfsociety.org

Lay’s pay day

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Eastern Star on Saturday, March 20 to contest a stableford competition on a course which was reasonably well presented but with inconsistent greens at the moment. The pace of the four newly laid greens is slower than the others and it will be a while yet before they are fully “bedded down”. However, the day brought a large field which was divided into two flights at fourteen and under.

In the second flight Jack Robertson, Fredy Braun and Max Tolbert all jostled for third with 30 points whilst there was nothing to separate two players very much in form currently, Larry Slattery and Richard Dobson at the top with 32 points each.

In the top flight Tony Thorne came good again with 33 points for third place, a few behind Mikael Andersson’s level par round, which in itself could have been much better had not the occasional putting lapse let the Swede down. The flight winner, with the best gross of 76 for the day, was Jon Lay, so often a PGS winner at weekends, and his 39 points will go a long way to help him realise his ultimate ambition in terms of his handicap.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Ben Cohen who was playing his first qualification round for a CONGU handicap and in a side bet with father Rabbi, playing off the same notional handicap he took the honours in style. Youngsters today have no respect for their parents! This weekend golf can be good fun.

Patterson outperforms the pack

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Monday, March 15, Green Valley – Stableford

1st Bob Patterson (8) 40pts
2nd Mike McPhee (6) 36pts
3rd Jeremy Masse (12) 35pts
4th Allan Thomas (8) 35pts

Bob Patterson was on his game today, leading the way with a well managed round and was rewarded with 40 points, firing a 76 off the stick. He kept it together after the 3 group pile up on the second tee and never looked back.

One of our Canadian guests, Mike McPhee, played a fine even par back nine and finished with 36 points for second place. Meanwhile Jeremy Masse and Allan Thomas had a great 35 point battle with Jeremy winning the count back for third.

Wednesday, March 17, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

1st Steve Weller (9) 37pts
2nd Kevin Taylor (6) 31pts
3rd Peter Iosifidis (25) 28pts

The Mountain Shadow greens were tough as usual and the coconut and mango trees flush, but Steve Weller got them figured out early and out-played the field on this day. His 37 points were well ahead of a respectful 31 points carded by Kevin Taylor. Peter Iosifidis, visiting from the USA via Greece, scored 28 points for third spot. The rest of us spent the day knocking mangos and coconuts from the trees.

Friday, March 19, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Kevin Taylor (6) 34pts
2nd Odvar Ryyke (12) 32pts
3rd Steve Weller (9) 32pts

Kevin Taylor continued his steady play of late and took the day at Bangpra with 34 points. Odvar Rykke returned from a 6,000km motor bike tour and showed little rust or road dust, carding a 32 point effort. Steve Weller was narrowly nipped on the count back.

Kilner has a field day at Burapha

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, March 15, Burapha - Stableford

With both Capt’ Bob and General Jack away on duty with a large group of Outbackers to play in the 4th Chaing Mai Challenge, it was left to some willing hands to run the golf for the first two days of the week. Today it was in the capable hands of Pottsy (Campbell Potts) and Paul Greenaway, ably assisted by George Bishop with Nigel doing the story.

It was still a good number with some 35 who took on Burapha C and D from the white tees. There were some very good results however no one managed a ‘2’! So it was three divisions with five places in each.

The early starters in Division ‘A’ again did well, this time the first three places, as Steve Budrys (13) came in with a fine 40 points to take the leading place, Tom Fitzpatrick (11) claimed second with 37, and he was closely followed by Bob Finley (11) in third with 36.

In fourth and fifth places were Paul Greenaway (12) and Neil Lavery (9) both with 33; Paul taking fourth spot on count back.

Playing to his handicap, Raymond Carvalho (16) with 36 points was the best in Division ‘B’, but only a point behind were Pete Stonebridge (15) and John O’Keefe (16) both with 35 with Pete making second. Another count back was required for fourth and fifth places with both Jean Guy Gaudet (16) and George Bishop (14) having 33 points but Jean having the better back nine.

Division ‘C’ produced the two best scores of the day with Steve Kilner (22) coming home with a great 45 points! In second place four points behind with 41 was John Snow (24), KC Johnson (18) was third with 39, followed in by regular Bob Lindborg (18) with 38, and the only lady on the podium today, Sakorn (25) with 34.

Messrs Kilner, Snow & Johnson will all find themselves playing off new handicaps for their remaining golf here in Pattaya; Steve now being cut to 18, John to 22 and KC to 17. Enjoy!

Tuesday, March 16, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

With the Outback management still on the Chiang Mai Challenge, it was Nigel Cannon who was the organiser for today. Even with many regulars away there were still 22 Outbackers who went to Pattaya Country Club for the Outback’s weekly visit.

The course was not particularly busy and we got away a little before our normal time. Many areas of the course were being watered and ‘spare’ caddies used to tidy up!

Geoff Moodie brought along a group of Aussies here on holiday and all enjoyed their day. It was also ‘goodbye’ for a short time to Barry Macintosh returning to his homeland for a few weeks of work. With 22 players it was two divisions and 3 places and ‘2’s!

The top score of the day (just) in Division ‘A’ was from Jean Paul Michiels (20) with 42 points; second spot was taken by our regular Frank O’Neill (18) with 38 points, and the final place went to the man never far away, Chris Fletcher (10) with 37.

In top spot today in Division ‘B’ was a lady who has been threatening to be ‘No. 1’ and today was her day. PCC caddy and Frank’s partner, Laong (H/cap 38), came home with 41 points and a handicap adjustment. Alan Pearce took second with a very mediocre score of 32 followed by John Burns (21) with 31. Nigel Cannon & Arthur Bailey also had 31’s.

There were 2 two’s from Bob Pearce and Alan Pearce.

The Outback will be at Pattaya Country Club again next week with a ‘special’ Birthday bash!

Div A (0–20)
1st Jean-Paul Michiels (20) 42pts
2nd Frank O’Neill (18) 38pts
3rd Chris Fletcher (10) 37pts
Div B (21+)
1st Laong (38) 41pts
2nd Alan Pearce (22) 32pts
3rd John Burns (21) 31pts

Friday, March 19, Khao Kheow - Stableford

Only 26 players today on the B & C loops at Khao Kheow as many of the regular Outbackers were still in Chiang Mai, or had returned only late the previous night (Thursday). Looking at the scores, it seems as though the guys are generally getting the hang of this course with the average score up near 30; still a long way to go but a distinct improvement.

Dave Buchanan, playing off 1, put an excellent round together for a gross 73 (36pts) to win Div A from Tony Garnett and Paul Greenaway, both on 35. In Div B, Randy Hurwitz picked up 38 points to win by six from the only lady in the field, Jum, and the Sugarman, both with 32.

There was a ‘jackpot 2’ today, bagged by Jum.

Div A (0–14)
1st Dave Buchanan (1) 36pts
2nd Tony Garnett (11) 35pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (13) 35pts
4th George Bishop (14) 33pts

1st Randy Hurwitz (15) 38pts
2nd Jum Karagit (16) 32pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (19) 32pts
4th Kevin Hamilton (18) 31pts

Note: The Outback Golf Bar has now completed the move to its new home, situated 400 metres nearer to Pattaya than the old premises, but still about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. A great week for Jimmy Merritt

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Saturday’s winners: Michael Moreton, Jimmy Merritt (winner from Tuesday), Mod Chaviraksa, Wayne Harman, Pat Quinlavin and Alan Thomas.

Barry Hooper
What a great week for Jimmy Merritt! He’s the son of a regular player with the TRGG called John Merritt. Jimmy has played a few times with us but this past week is one he will never forget. You never forget your first win in Thailand! Jimmy took his first podium topping spot in a very big field at Greenwood on Tuesday with his great 39-pointer.

The numbers are reducing as the high season runs down but the quality of play is not. Score numbers were a little down on the previous week which shows that the courses are not getting any easier it seems.

Monday, March 15, Crystal Bay B&C - Stableford
1st Mike Rushant (13) 37pts
2nd Larry Simpson (10) 36pts
3rd S.Metha (15) 35pts
4th Howard Tyler (5) 33pts

Our first outing of the week was to Crystal Bay on Monday to play the B & C courses. We had a good entry so one full division and places down to fourth.

Howard Tylor took that fourth spot on 33 points, edging John Merritt on count back. In third was S.Metha with a one over 35 points and one behind the runner up, Larry Simpson. Taking the win today was Mike Rushant with a fine one under the card 37 points.

There were just two ‘2’s on the day from S.Metha and Roger Wilkinson.

Tuesday, March 16, Greenwood A&C - Stableford
1st Jimmy Merritt (32) 39pts
2nd Howard Tyler (5) 37pts
3rd Bill McGarvie (11) 35pts
4th Neil Allison (18) 32pts
5th Piere Cere (12) 31pts

Tuesday the sixteenth was a trip to Greenwood and we had good numbers so again one very full division.

The day saw a great win for Jimmy Merritt who played some of his best golf ever here in Thailand to take his first win at the TRGG with 39 points. In second was Howard Tyler with 37 and Bill McGarvie took third on 35. Neil Allison finished fourth with 32 ahead of two others, Piere Cere and Phil Battah, tied on 31 points. There were no ‘2’s on the day.

Thursday, March 18, Phoenix - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Alan Thomas (8) 37pts
2nd Howard Tyler (5) 37pts
3rd Larry Simpson (10) 36pts
4th Tewin Lamthong (9) 36pts
Div. 2
1st Richard Dobson (16) 39pts
2nd Jeff Wilcox (24) 38pts
3rd Jimmy Merritt (28) 36pts
4th Phil Battah (15) 35pts
Thursday was our usual outing to Phoenix this time playing the Lakes and Ocean courses. As is usual these days we had a very big entry and two divisions.

The second flight saw a win for Richard Dobson with 39 points, just one ahead of Jeff Wilcox in second while Jimmy Merritt took third with 36. Phil Battah was in fourth spot on count back over the unlucky John Merritt.

Alan Thomas took top spot in the premier flight with 37 points on a count back over Howard Tyler. Third place down to fifth was another count back fight out with all players on 36 points. Honours for third went to Larry Simpson with his twenty on the back nine, just pipping Tewin Lamthong and her nineteen. Mod Chaviraksa only had eighteen.

Just the one ‘2’ today and all the honours going to Tony Molloy.

Saturday, March 13, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Mod Chaviraksa (11) 35pts
2nd Pat Quinlavin (12) 35pts
3rd Alan Thomas (8) 35pts
4th Tewin Lamthong (9) 33pts
Div. 2
1st Wayne Harman (17) 35pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (16) 35pts
3rd Michael Moreton (25) 34pts
4th Noel Jackson (21) 33pts

Saturday and off we went to our alternative weekend venue of Eastern Star. Entry numbers were good and two divisions with pay outs to fourth place.

Wayne Harman was top dog this week in the second division with his 35 points and a great twenty three on the back nine, which beat Roger Wilkinson’s fifteen and pushed him down to second place. Michael Moreton took third spot with 34 points and Noel Jackson was fourth at 33.

In the top flight Mod Chaviraksa headed the list with her 35 points and fourteen over the last six which was two better than Pat Quinlavins twelve. Third, and also with 35 points, was Alan Thomas but he only managed fourteen over all of the back nine. Tewin Lamthong was fourth with 33 points.

Only the two ‘2’s recorded and they came from Garry Swan at the sixth and Wayne Harman at the thirteenth.
