Skål International Thailand celebrates 50th anniversary
Presidents of Skål Clubs in
Thailand including SI President Jan Sunde, National President Malai
Sakolviphak and Andrew Wood, International Councillor Thailand, ready to cut
the birthday cake.
One of the highlights of the 67th Skål world Congress
that ended last week was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Skål
Club of Bangkok.
Skål International Bangkok was established on September 28, 1956. The
displays of friendship and amicale spirits by the founders and members of
the Club are very impressive and resulted in the formation of four more Skål
clubs in Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui and the fifth club soon
to be established in Hua Hin.
Skål International Bangkok is a professional organization of leaders from
all branches of the travel and tourism industry. The aim of the club is to
promote global tourism and friendship. The club is also a member of the
International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals.
Exactly ten years ago, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Skål movements
in Thailand, Skål International Bangkok hosted the 57th Skål World Congress
in November 1996. That Congress was said to be one of the most successful
Congresses, with over 1,700 participants from Skål Clubs around the world.
President Jan Sunde thanked Malai Sakolviphak one of the founders of the
club and who is now the national president of Skål in Thailand for his
dedication to promoting the ideals of Skål throughout his life. In his
speech he said that in all his years as a Skålleagues he had never met
anyone who has worked so hard for the development of the travel and tourism
business, not only in Thailand but also around the world.
President Jan also thanked Brian Sinclair-Thompson, the current president of
the Bangkok Skål Club, for his years of service to Skål. Brian responded in
emotional yet determined tone saying that Skål plays a very important part
in everyone’s life as we work to encourage more tourism amongst all
countries of the world, which in turn will forge friendship and peace
amongst the peoples of all nationalities and creeds.
The presidents of all the Skål Clubs in Thailand then gathered on stage,
each with knife in hand and as the whole crowd roared out the Happy Birthday
song, they cut the gigantic birthday cake in unison wishing each other
another progressive 50 years of friendship and peace through tourism.
Once again a full house at the PCEC meeting
Dr. Iain (right) provided some
amazing facts about medical treatment in Thailand.
The meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) on Sunday
October 15 at Henry J. Bean’s saw another packed house. The Club continues to go
from strength to strength and a busy program was again available this week.
Two guest speakers were in attendance this week, the first being Dr Iain
Corness, the well known Bangkok Pattaya Hospital consultant who was then
followed by Khun Pravit, vice president of the Second Road branch of the Bangkok
Bank.
Dr Iain Corness is a multi talented person. Not only does he provide invaluable
liaison between foreign patients and the medical staff at the hospital, he also
finds time to write a weekly medical column for the Pattaya Mail, an automobile
and racing column, restaurant reviews and occasional interviews for Pattaya Mail
TV.
The theme of Dr Corness’s talk was ‘Cultural Differences and Expectations -
Amazing Facts’. The amazing facts provided by Dr Corness proved to be most
helpful in order to make the best use of the medical facilities in Pattaya and
Thailand as a whole.
Amazing Fact Number 1 - we should remember that we are living in Thailand and
that the approach to medical care is different from that available, for example,
in the US or UK.
Amazing Fact Number 2 - reminded us that whilst public hospitals may offer
treatment at cheaper prices, they are subsidised by the Thai government and
there are moves afoot to exclude non taxpaying foreigners from these facilities.
Amazing Fact Number 3 - reminded us that for the Thai medical staff, although
medically very proficient, English is their second language.
Amazing Fact Number 4 - it is important to provide an accurate description of
the symptoms of a medical condition and not to make a pre emptive diagnosis
based upon information obtained, for example, via the internet.
Amazing Fact Number 5 - medicines obtained from the hospital may sometimes be
more expensive than those bought from a pharmacy. The hospital often has hidden
costs which the pharmacy is unlikely to have and there is also the need for
continued investment in equipment and services.
Dr Corness is available from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the
International Department of the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.
Pravit, vice president of the Bangkok Bank was then welcomed back. Pravit
provided an update on the special services and investment products available for
PCEC members by the Bangkok Bank.
This was then followed by Drew Noyes who provided full details of a very
comprehensive 5 day trip to Chiang Mai which will take in, amongst other
activities, the Loy Krathong Festival and the International Exposition Site.
Further trips are expected to be announced shortly.
The regular Open Forum was then underway and this proved to be the usual lively
and entertaining session.
For more information regarding, not only PCEC Sunday meetings but also the
varied mid week activities, please see the Community Happenings section of
Pattaya Mail or, for more detail, visit the Club’s website at
