U.S. Navy and Rotary Club
Taksin-Pattaya join hands again

The crew of 15, their captain,
his wife and 3 kids, finished the project prior to the schedule time.
The USS Honolulu SSN 718, an attack submarine from the
Los Angeles Class, anchored at Laem Chabang Port for a much deserved break
from the daily work routine.
The sub is on its last voyage and will travel to the naval base in
Washington State for decommissioning. Nevertheless the crew enthusiastically
embarked on two more Community Service projects prior to leaving and pulled
out all stops to renovate the 20-year-old music room at Nikom Sang Tonaeng
School.
The crew of 15 who volunteered for this project were joined by their captain
and his wife and 3 kids! I guess this made all the difference, as they were
finished prior to the schedule time.
The second Comrel was carried out with the additional help of Marriott Hotel
& Spa chef, Dennis. The cooks from the submarine joined the chef in exchange
of trade secrets and picked up a few additional dishes for them to cook when
back at sea. The Marriott Hotel & Spa kindly also supplied a delicious lunch
during the day.
As usual these community projects were arranged for the visiting ship by
Charter President Peter Thorand of the Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya.
Rotarian Hans Schaad aided him.

PILC August coffee morning at Lakeside Lodge
Susan Farrar
The Pattaya International Ladies Club held their August coffee morning at the
Lakeside Lodge. This venue was new for the PILC as it has recently opened,
offering a wonderful view of the lake.
PILC
members very much enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at Lakeside Lodge during their
August coffee morning.
August generally sees a very small turnout, as it seems to be the month for home
visits for many of the members. Not so this year! With nearly 50 members
attending, it offered a wonderful opportunity for the ladies to catch up with
one another.
PILC welcomed two new members, Jacqueline Hamlett from New Zealand and Allegra
Biastrocchi from Italy. Welcome, ladies, and have a great time acquainting
yourselves with Pattaya, PILC and all of the wonderful elements associated with
living in South East Asia.
Members were made aware that tickets are now on sale for the annual gala, Around
The World Charity Ball, being held November 25 at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.
Members were also reminded that raffle tickets are now on sale for the raffle
which being held at the Holiday Bazaar, October 7 at the Royal Cliff Beach
Resort. These two events are the largest fundraising events that PILC has and
from which the welfare monies come. Please contact Roseanne Diamente, Special
Events Chairperson, on [email protected] for ticket information.
President Gillian Thom thanked William Gibbs and his staff of the Lakeside Lodge
for providing a wonderful selection of sweets and savories, as well as the
Hospitality Team of Kavita Singh and Stephanie Moorhouse for yet another
wonderful morning. The ladies are constantly surprising the membership with

Absent… The Asian Male
Concentration on the Nude

Gallery owner Liam Ayudhkij shows
courage and strength for mounting this interesting exhibition.
Michael A. Bulley
Art Critic
The first solo exhibition of the male nude in Thailand by American artist known
as M.P.D., is being held at Pattaya Modern Art Centre, Soi 4 Pratamnak Road,
Pattaya, until September 16.
The fig leaf has given way to the “loin cloth”, and now both are “absent” in
these works of art, which makes for a certain feeling of freedom.
The
artist consciously prevents the viewer from getting too close to his subjects.
When we think of the nude figure it’s primarily that of the female. All through
history, artists have almost had an obsession (being mostly male) enjoying the
erotic figurative female form. As early as the 16th century, art depicted the
nude female as passive, waiting, seductive. Unlike the male, who is active, the
hunter, the Greek god. Some of the great artists painting the female body were
Velazques (Venus in the Mirror 1649-51), Goya (Nude Maja 1800). These are
beautiful and sensual even to this day.
It was left almost to the work of Michaelangelo’s great sculpture of David
(1501-4), this 14-foot work so lovingly carved by the gifted artist that showed
the male nude as he is, “a man”. In his own right this great biblical hero is
shown thinking, almost as a spiritual nude. Indeed, not ready to do battle with
Goliath, but just maybe thinking of a loving relationship with the artist?
M.P.D. has also a love of his art form, and his models; these young men with
athletic bodies and pinch fit splendid muscle tone, just sitting waiting with no
expression, as if waiting like boxers for the bell and some action. The artist
consciously prevents the viewer from getting too close to his subjects; it’s as
if we can look and admire, but nothing more. Does he wish to keep these gods for
himself, for greed, or protection? Which?
I leave you the viewer to resolve this in your own mind.
Talking with M.P.D., he speaks of the word “courage”. I feel the real courage
and strength of mind is that of gallery owner, Liam Ayudhkij for mounting this
interesting exhibition. His beautiful cool art centre is a perfect setting for
the fiery colours on display.
Whether we like it or not the male nude makes it possible for us to contemplate
our own prejudices and sexuality from a safe distance.
Thai-UK 2006 Exhibition - September 7-9
This Thai-UK 2006 is the largest and most important business
event with a Thai-UK theme that has ever been organised in Thailand. It is also
the biggest event that the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) has
organised in its 60 year history. It is an opportunity not to be missed for any
British or Thai-British company doing business in Thailand. It is also an
excellent chance for any Thai company to promote itself to the international
community.
Thai-UK 2006 is actively supported by the BCCT, Thailand Board of Investment,
Federation of Thai Industries, Thai Chamber of Commerce, British Embassy
Bangkok, UK Trade & Investment and the British Council.
The media and publicity programme for Thai-UK 2006 includes all the major Thai
and English language newspapers and magazines, nine websites, banner
advertisements on five expressways tolls, posters at 220 schools and
universities, Virgin Radio, Bangkok Radio.net and UBC TV. Publicity leaflets are
being mailed to more than 145,000 selected contacts including a targeted mailing
to 20,000 business professionals in Bangkok. In addition, exhibitors receive
public relations benefits through the BCCT in the form of naming in publicity
emails, references in future issues of The Brief and photographs in the 2007
edition of the BCCT’s Annual Handbook and Directory.
Stand prices begin at only THB 40-50,000 all-in. While appreciating that you may
have budgetary concerns this cost is small in the context of a 60 year
celebration, the public relations benefits listed above and those to be gained
by participating at the exhibition. This is a one-off event. There will not be a
Thai-UK 2007.
Please carefully consider participating in Thai-UK 2006. It is a very important
event for the Thai-UK business community. Most of the major British companies in
Thailand are participating. Further information is available at -
