Horseshoe Point Pony Club goes to competition

Fun was the name of the game and for sure it can be said that this aim was achieved. What was the cause of this excitement? It was the first gymkhana and jumping competition between the Horseshoe Point Branch of the Pony Club and the Garden City Polo Branch of the Pony Club.

Pony Club riders show proudly show off their medals won at the first gymkhana and jumping competition between the Horseshoe Point Branch of the Pony Club and the Garden City Polo Branch of the Pony Club. Sally Jones (far left) Thailand District Commissioner runs the Horseshoe Point Branch.

Sally Jones who is also the Thailand District Commissioner runs the Horseshoe Point Branch. The two branches decided to challenge one another to a series of competitions the first one being recently hosted at Garden City Polo, Bang-Na.

Months of preparation involving the ponies and riders followed and then the day before the competition the riders in the team met to clean the saddles plus bridles and shampoo their ponies. The next morning Pikachu, Raspberry, Koko and Mojo were loaded into the horsebox at the crack of dawn to start their slow journey towards Bangkok with their riders following a few hours later.

The months of practicing paid off as the members had tremendous pleasure in playing the gymkhana games such as the bending race, which sees the rider controlling their pony in and out of cones. The egg and spoon race demonstrates skill on horseback as the rider not only controls their pony but also balances an egg on a spoon at the same time at speed. Musical sacks proved to be the most exciting game with a tremendous contest between two riders from both clubs who reached the last two competitors. Both riders showed fighting spirit to win the game in true Pony Club style. The Horseshoe Point four-person team won 22 rosettes between them and many for first place creating many memorable moments.

In the afternoon there was a jumping competition involving the Pony Club member who could jump the highest taking first place. The winner was a deaf rider from the Horseshoe Point Branch, who jumped the highest on the smallest pony, Koko; together they cleared 80 cms.

Above all fun, skill and determination along with safety was the name of the game. The Horseshoe Point Branch members returned home victorious and happy. The return competition is scheduled later in the year, of which the Horseshoe Point Branch will practice thoroughly once again.

The Pony Club is open to young people up to 21 years of age and anyone interested in joining can contact Sally Jones at the International Riding School at Horseshoe Point on 038 735050 ext: 4016 or Ext 4017.

The International Riding School at Horseshoe Point is also hosting the 2005 FEI World Jumping Challenge on Friday, August 5 to Sunday August 7. The opening ceremony begins from 4.30 p.m. with show jumping classes to follow. The competition continues on August 6 at 8 a.m. with dressage classes, and at 1 p.m., the show jumping carries on throughout the afternoon and all day on Sunday August 7. Everyone is welcome to watch.

Joy for Mr Loy & Aussie Bob 1

IPGC golf from The Caddy Shack

Tuesday the 26th saw over twenty golfers travel to Noble Place for a medal competition over the B & C courses. This layout and the conditions plus the caddy & green fee with golf cart makes the value the best in the area. Friendly staff and an efficient starter made for the perfect day. Division 2 had the three musketeers; Clark Alexander net 72, Philip Jacks 70 & Rob Heath net 69.

A happy team, Aussie Bob 1 and Mr Loy recorded 11 pars & 6 birdies for a gross 67 and net 61.20 out at Crystal Bay.

Taking the winning positions Division 1 saw Mike Allidi with one over par 73 trailing joint winners Ben Findon & Bob Philp with net 71. The two’s were shared between Tony Duthie, Rob Hesth & Russell Benson. The horse won the bananas again for taking his caddy from another golf course and because she was playing better than him he demanded his putter back from her, he then proceeded to take four shots to reach her drive. The lucky draw was won by Mark Joshua.

Thursday July 28 was a two man scramble event held at the immaculate Phoenix golf club. This popular format was played over the Mountain & Lakes courses in perfect weather conditions. Most of the teams had a pre-match plan but very quickly had to re-organise.

In second place was last months winners Mark Joshua & Philip Jacks with net 68 but they could not catch Aussie Bob 1 & Mr Loy who recorded 11 pars & 6 birdies for a gross 67 net 61.20. Near the pins went to Bob 1 David Lightfoot, Tony Casale & Philip Jacks. The bananas were awarded to Aussie Bob 2 & Angus, the horse just for turning up & thinking they had a chance.

All are welcome to play at the Caddy Shack just telephone Mr Loy on 07-141-4702 or turn up before 11 a.m.

Tuesday August 9 is Green Valley medal or Thursday August 11 at Crystal Bay for a stableford round. Transport can be arranged, the Caddy Shack is located on soi 17 south Pattaya on the same road as the Harley Bar.

Oakes towers in Kronborg Monthly Mug

PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Thursday July 28,
Siam Country Club

Once again the Monthly Mug brought out the golfers, and a full field, plus a few more, duly teed off at Siam.

Siam at present is in fairly good condition, considering the lack of rain, but hard fairways still persist and on this day so did the wind. Greens are not too bad, but they will always be ‘Siam’ greens

Tony Oakes (right) receives the monthly mug from Dave ‘the Admiral’ Richardson.

Ready, steady, go, and off went the pace setters, Herbie and his co-players, always fast, and ideal to chase the people ahead. So off he went and the sheep followed. When we finished we found Herbie waiting in the restaurant, testing the local Nectar.

This day only at the Cafe Kronborg, the presentation is back at home base, and on this day the results nearly made it a ‘Ladies Day’.

In the A Flight, 0 to 15, the winner was Nual Russel, with a fine net 68. Nual in now playing good golf and is coming down fast. In second was Mike (Elvis) Gerrard with a net 71, and in a countback for third, with net 73; Gene Rooney beat Thomas Johansson into fourth.

Nual Russell and Toy Theobald, winners of the A and B Flights.

In the B Flight, 16 up, Toy Theobald won with a fine net 67. Toy holds the best ever winning score in The Mug, once winning with a net 59. In second was Doug Chalkley with a net 68 and in third, and making the Theobald’s day, was Fred Theobald with a net 70.

So to the winner and have we got a cracker. Who in the man who should never win, for those who say the ‘handicapper’ take a pat on the back! So the winner of ‘The Mug’ was Tony Oakes, our new single handicap player, with a net 64. T.T.F.N.

Long Putts: #4 Ito San, #8 Fergus Brennan, #12 Tony Oakes, #16 Takeshi Hakozaki.

Near Pins: #9 Thomas Johansson and #18 Doug Douglas

Handsome man on the podium

IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday July 24, Green Valley
Blue or White Tees
Stroke/Medal
1st Blue Flight: Jim Wickstrom, net 76
1st White A Flight: Brian Holden, net 66
2nd White A Flight: Joe Mooneyham, net 67
3rd White A Flight : John Hue, net 70
1st White B Flight : Mike Seely, net 69
2nd White B Flight: Ian 1/2penny, net 70
3rd White B Flight: Larry Nicholas, net 74
1st White C Flight: Ray Dell, net 67
2nd White C Flight: Poo Supaporn, net 70
3rd White C Flight: Ken Graham, net 72
Near Pins: #8 Barry Copestake; #13 John Ginnane

Perhaps it was writer’s block, perhaps there just wasn’t a unique performance, but the ol’ Scribe could not bring himself to anoint any one player with the honor of the title. How would he encourage readership? Hmmm? Well, the scribe noted there were 23 male podium holders on the week (and one female, Apple). Perhaps I could at least garner those 23 sets of eyes by using the moniker that each knew was unique to each him, “Hello, Handsome Man”. Well enough of the Scribe’s challenges, now on to the golf.

A couple of handfuls of golfers, save the two thumbs and two index fingers, took on the “Where the Hell are they” Blue Tees at Green Valley. As noted, the tees not only provide the low handicap with a solid challenge but they take the golfer to areas of the course one previously did not know existed. Canada’s Jim Wickstrom, a stout 5 handicapper, rose to the top to the class with a gross 81, net 76 effort.

In the more sublime, White Flights, the Man of the Match was the premier Flight’s Brian “Know when to” Holden and his net 66 off an eight handicap. Joe “I’m in the” was a scant stroke back at 67 with new member, John Hue, coveting the White A Flight bronze.

In the Mid-Flight, Mike Seely continued his fine play to take his second consecutive Sunday first with a 69 to mate, Ian 1/2penny’s 70. The Irish Curmudgeon tidied up (assuming Larry’s golf attire would allow for ever “tidying up” anything) B Flight with a count back over Neville “Jacko” Jackson (his nickname not mine!)

Ray “Framer in the” Dell showed that his unaccustomed presence in C Flight would be short lived as he fashioned an encouraging net 67. Ms. Golf Manager bettered a three-way knot of players for the silver. Kenny Graham had the better of that final step count back over Uncle Fred and Sid “The Tin Man from Oz” Ottaway.

Tuesday July 26, Laem Chabang, C & A
Blue or White Tees, Stroke/Medal
1st Blue Flight: Andrew Reid, 36 pts
2nd Blue Flight: Kuni Wakabayashi, 35 pts
1st White Flight: Graham Hiskett, 41 pts
2nd White Flight: Bruce McAdam , 38 pts
3rd White Flight: Chaten Patel, 36 pts

In a week that saw several Society rookies fair well, Andrew Reid led the way in the Blue Bomber Bunch. Second place Kuni Wakabayashi was the medalist on the day, whether Blue of White Flight.

Another newcomer to Lewiinski’s, Graham Hiskett, bettered all of B Flight and the last of the Milner Marauders still in town, Bruce Milner, and Chaten Patel, who made a strong bid for the title with the first of two podium stands on the week.

Wednesday July 27, Khao Kheow, A & B, Yellow Tees, Stableford

1st A Flight: Peter Hynard, 42 pts
2nd A Flight: Don Lehmer, 36 pts
1st B Flight: Chaten Patel, 35 pts
2nd B Flight: Ed Junger, 35 pts

Peter Hynard’s scorecard looked as though he had played another, and nearer set of tees, like the Reds, from the balance of the field as he was the only one to break par on the day, and did so by 6 points! The Lady’s Manwas so far back in A Flight second, it made it look like Peter was at the altar while Don just entered the church.

Chaten grabbed his first gold of this membership edging Will’s dad, Ed, on count back.

Friday July 29
Phoenix, Mountain & Lake
Blue or White Tees, Stableford
1st Blue Flight: Don Lehmer, 35 pts
2nd Blue Flight: Jim Wickstrom, 35 pts
3rd Blue Flight: Mike Allidi, 33 pts
1st White Flight: Richard Garland, 39 pts
2nd White Flight: “Apple” Jitchana, 37 pts
Near Pins: #M4: Blue Tees: Jim Wickstrom; White Tees: Joe Mooneyham

The Lady’s Man scorned just two days before, returned with conviction and bettered the Blue Flight winner of the week’s start on count back to take the Boomer Boys over Jim Wickstrom. Mike Allidi’s third place was at the count back expense of Phil Groves, and also evidenced that a majority of the field relished the challenge of the Blue Tees of the Mountain and Lake nines at Phoenix.

Last week’s darlin’ showed he still had it with a 39 point outpouring off the Whites and off his new eight handicap. Richard’s fine effort relegated the Belle of the Ball, Apple Jitchana, to second, an unintended unchivalrous act from that Southern gentlemen.

Jack’s long lost nephew surfaces

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday July 25
Crystal Bay, A & B
Stableford

1st Mike Dabanovich, 40 pts
2nd John Squitero, 39 pts
3rd Rick Holmes, 38 pts - c/b 23
4th Mark Campbell, 38 pts - c/b 17

After such a long absence from the Natural Golf Courses, it was not surprising that many had forgotten the holes and how fast the greens have always been maintained. Not so for Dabber, who produced the round he has been threatening for some weeks! A great score of 81 gross for his 40 points that narrowly beat the challenges of John, Rick and Mark. Undoubtedly the surprise of the day was Rick Holmes, shooting 35 gross on B course for a fabulous 23 points off his 8 handicap. Rick had done a bunk from his home near Heathrow Airport in England early Friday morning, selling his car on the way to the airport, catching a flight to Bangkok and turning up in Pattaya on Saturday. He is still trying to compose a text message to his girlfriend to explain how his match play competition on Friday at his local golf club is still in progress after 359 extra holes! Back to the golf, the course was in excellent condition and not too surprisingly there were a few 2s on the fast but true greens. Whilst Matt Millar notched up the only one in division 2, Rick Holmes, Mark Campbell & Trevor Schirmer shared the division 1 pool. Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed Roger Lyons & Kim Neilsen and welcomed back Rick Holmes Matt Millar & Sam Hill before bidding farewell to John Squitero & Tom McCarthy.

Wednesday July 27
Mountain Shadow
Stableford

1st Glyn Nicklaus, 44 pts
2nd David Shaw, 37 pts
3rd Brian Kelly, 35 pts
4th Gordon Millar, 34 pts

Following on from Crystal Bay on Monday it was a Natural Resort’s double for the week, thanks to some shrewd negotiating by Stephen Beard for IPGC. Again, a large turnout for the old “hills” course, which was in pretty good condition, though suffering from dry parched fairways! Greens were fast and true, but leave your ball above the hole (?) and you have big problems as Brian Kelly found out! 3 putts, 3 putts etc. However, complete with new putter, Glyn Nicholas (similar pronunciation - similar spelling to the “Master”) proceeded to destroy the course and his handicap with a fantastic 81 off the stick, which included 8 pars and 2 birdies on the par 3s. Well done Glyn for a great round, winning by a massive 7 points from Dave Shaw, with Brian & Gordon completing the podium places and a well done to Serge Straeten who just missed out on countback by a single point! As ever on this course with it’s rolling “alpine” greens, 2’s were scarce but Glyn managed two to take a big chunk of the division 2 pool with Gordon Millar. In division 1, Takeshi Hakozaki carded the only 2 and so went home smiling! Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston welcomed Bob Sutterfield and welcomed back Peter Hall.

Friday July 29
Phoenix, Mountain/Lakes
Blue Tees
Monthly Medal

Division 1 (0 - 15)
1st Rick Holmes, net 77 - c/b 39
2nd Mark Campbell, net 77 - c/b 41
3rd Barry Traynor, net 78
Division 2 (16 plus)
1st Glyn Nicklaus, net 74
2nd Sam Hill, net 78
3rd Brian Kelly, net 81

Wow...what has happened to our beloved Phoenix where it used to be common to destroy one’s handicap? Well the fairways are giving nothing away, many balls plugged where they pitched and as for the bunkers, well gradually the sand is being eroded by golfers shaking out their shoes of unwanted granules! Once again, Glyn destroyed the field with a superb 91 gross which will surely see his handicap plummet by at least 3 shots from 17 to 14 and we wish him well in division 1. As for the rest, Absconder Rick Holmes was as surprised as anybody to take division 1 honours with a net 77 to beat poor Mark on countback for the second time in a week. Barry Traynor & Brian Kelly, playing together were equally amazed to finish on the podium with pretty high scores, but then everything is relative quipped Richard as he checked the days score cards, 103, 105, 108, 112 etc. A tough day indeed and only one magic 2 and that a chip-in by Barry Traynor to take the division 1 pool.

Back at the Haven, Richard Livingston welcomed Don Meloan and welcomed back Clive Pearce before bidding a sad farewell to Patrick Scullion. We will miss you Patrick but congratulations and best wishes on your new posting to Australia!

John Healy shoots gross 76 at Khao Kheow

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

At this time of the year renowned course designer, Pete Dye’s very special course at Khao Kheow offers such an attraction that few can resist and this was the case on Tuesday, July 26, when the Pattaya Golf Society chose its “A” and “B” nines as the venue for their weekly medal event. The air was heavy and overcast and a fresh breeze helped keep things comfortable as the group began on an empty course, well prepared and with consistent greens. It was always going to be a special day for John Healy as he started to savour the prospect of the Player of the Month award he had worked so assiduously for during the past few weeks. His form has been awesome and big sub-par rounds for the nine handicapper have been a feature of his play. He was not holding back this time and his consistent 39 - 37 figures gave him an astounding gross 76, net 67, to take the day. Hanging on to his bag straps was Ken Graham and his net 70 was a fine reward for the popular Irish golfer, whose recent form has also been impressive. In third place was Barry Pethig, reinvigorated by the use of his wife’s clubs instead of his own, and for him it was the second successful finish in seven days. Ken Graham took the nickname “Beethoven” at the presentation as it became clear his birdie two on the “A” third assured him of his second successive rolled-over prize. Canny Yorkshire golfer Bill Hewitt has recently arrived back in Pattaya and his first round began with a prolific three-wood to within fifty yards of the green, from which he then took eight shots to put the ball into the hole. How he savoured the Booby Bevy at the presentation!

Best ever for Barry Pethig

Eastern Star victor Barry Pethig (left) congratulates Player of the Month John Healy.

Thursday, July 28, saw the culmination of the Pattaya Golf Society’s Player of the Month competition with a visit to Eastern Star for a stableford competition. The day remained fine and the course was in excellent condition as the unassailable leader John Healy led the field from the first tee. His day was to be punctuated with problems, however, as a damaged back muscle was to draw his round to a premature close. Rob Dolan was easing himself back after injury with a steady round of 30 points and he managed to take third place, a long way behind the consistent cabbie from Northern Ireland, Ken Graham, and his round of 37 points was a fine reward for some good golf. Septuagenarian Berry Pethig’s golf fortunes have soared with the acquisition of his wife’s clubs and he chose the occasion to post his best ever score, 46 points, and take the day in style. The presentation at the OK Corral, Barry was the man chosen to make the prestigious monthly award to winner John Healy, as our photograph shows. There were no birdie two’s although the hero of the day came very close on one hole. The Booby Bevy was awarded to Len Jones for his memory lapse at the presentation but the good humour continued long into the evening, celebrating the landmark win for Barry Pethig.

Larder & Murphy win Jameson’s better ball on count-back

Mike Franklin

A back-nine tally of 21 Stableford points was just enough to win the ‘JIGS’ Better Ball Stableford competition at Eastern Star Country Club & Resort on Wednesday July 27.

Mike with Runners-up Tai & Andy (1).

A total of 43 Stableford points tied with Andy McTighe and Tai Kennedy, also with 43 points, but their 18 points on the back-nine (following 25 points on the front) could only secure the runner-up place.

Technical hole results were Mikael Andersson closest to the pin on # 3, and Landlord Kim Fletcher on # 17. Longest first putts went to Mam Trayling on # 9 and Mike himself on # 18.

The overcast breezy weather made for a pleasant round of golf, and the recently sanded greens did not present much more of a putting problem than usual.

Curry Night was the menu of the day back at Jameson’s. Newcomers Bo Carlsson, John Cunningham and Emmet White were duly welcomed together with John Kennedy’s mother here for a holiday and kindly chauffeuring Tai around Eastern Star golf course.

The next JIGS outing is to Sriracha on Wednesday August 10 for a Pairs Combined Stableford. Sign-up at Jameson’s for that.

Nooket makes it three in a row!

Diana Seniors & Ladies Open

Mike Franklin

Nooket Gummer had her third consecutive Ladies win in the July Diana Seniors & Ladies Open at Pattaya Country Club on July 28 with 38 Stableford points off her 34 handicap.

Just a shot behind with 37 points was Alice Ramsay claiming runner-up spot.

Curtis Hessler, Nooket Gummer & Dave Earthrowl, July Diana Seniors & Ladies Open winners.

Best scores of the day came from the men. In the Seniors category Curtis Hessler and Alan Pearce tied with 40 points, Curtis winning the back nine count-back with 18 points against Alan’s 17 points. Best score of the day was returned by Dave Earthrowl to win the Super Seniors category with 41 points off a 19 handicap. Basil Foley with a handicap of 20, and maintaining form, scored 40 points to be runner-up.

Near pins were claimed by Arthur Bailey, George Meigh, Bob Pearce and Curtis Hessler. Arthur and George also featured in the long putts by longest on # 9 and # 18 respectively.

The weather was fine to near perfect, overcast with a strong breeze.

The new faces were duly welcomed during prize-giving, namely Klaus Hoffmeister, Thong Pakdiwan and David Brown. It was welcome back to Curtis Hessler, Alice and Graham Ramsay and Ged Mason.

The next Diana Seniors & Ladies Open will be on Thursday August 25 at Pattaya Country Club. Hope to see you then, so sign-up at the Green Bottle or at the Diana Garden Resort Driving Range.

Big Dan Sell blows them away at Ban Chang

PSC McAllister’s Golf

Another very pleasant day for golf at Century Ban Chang for the regular PSC McAllister’s golf, with the course in good shape except for a number of the greens, particularly the 17th, which were very difficult having been cored and sanded but left uncut in places. Tournament organizer Dennis Willett has pointed this out to management and we are sure that the greens will be in better condition next week.

(l-)r Winner Dan Sell with Stuart Thompson, Graham Hiskett, Skip Sparkman and one of Don’s lovelies.

None of this fazed Dan Sell at all as he shot the score of his life with 46 stableford points. There were a host of golfers with scores of 36 and 37 but none came even close to Dan. Second prize went to Stuart Thompson on countback from Graham Hiskett and Skip Sparkman all of whom had 37 points. Dan is quite well known by his booming drives having won a number of long drive prizes in the past, but there was obviously a lot going right with the rest of his game to shoot so well. Combined with last week’s 39 points Dan can expect no mercy from the Handicap Committee at PSC.

In a feature match within the tournament, Larry Ball and Gerry Lien went head-to-head playing under the watchful eyes of Dennis Willett and Bill Thompson. Larry went 3 up after three holes until Gerry clawed his way back to be all square at the turn, and then held Larry all the way up until the 17th tee after which Larry prevailed 2 up. These matches have become quite a feature, usually hatched over drinks sometime during the previous week, and there is no better way to prove a point than on the course.

Don McAllister and his staff welcomed the returning golfers with the usual complimentary buffet and this time a round of drinks for the table at the back both of which were appreciated. All are welcome for this fun Friday event. All you need to do is to show up at Century Ban Chang before 8 a.m. with a PSC handicap or a recognized handicap card from elsewhere.

Moonshine stars this week

Jomtien 8 Ball Pool League

Last week, week 16 was disrupted because of the public holiday and only four matches were played. Country Club claimed their ninth 5-4 win of the season at Twilight Zone to hold on to second place on the ladder; Bolaget came back from three straight losses to defeat visitors Moonshine 6-3; Lucky Bar, who have hung around mid-table for most of the season, gained their highest place in the standings with a 5-4 win at Woaw’s Pub; and Rose & Thistle kept up the pressure for second place with an easy 7-2 win at Paweena’s.

Moonshine pose with their visitors from Country Club. Moonshine won the match 6-3.

There was further disruption in week 17 caused by the unfortunate withdrawal of a team from the league. This means that there is now a bye and second round matches already played by the withdrawn team have been re-scored to a bye, although the standings are not affected.

Making the most of their home advantage, Moonshine scored the upset of the week by ending Country Club’s four match winning streak. All six singles went to the home side but perhaps with the pressure off, they dropped all three doubles. Moonshine has been playing well without reward so they might believe that their fortunes have changed.

San Snack Bar continued their cruise at the top of the table with a 6-3 home win against Hide-A-Way. The home side had the points on the board before the doubles for their 13th win in a row. The rest are hoping that “13” proves unlucky for SSB.

In Soi 5, Simple Simon hosted neighbors Paweena’s. It was game for game all night and came down to a fight for the eight ball in game nine before Simple Simon could claim the match 5-4. With a catch-up match to play, Simple Simon are still in the race for second place.

In other matches; at Lucky Bar, scores were even at the supper break but visitors Bolaget were too strong in the doubles and took the points with the 6-3 result; and Rose & Thistle edged visitors Woaw’s 5-4 for their third win in a row to keep themselves in the running for second place.

With the points situation so close in mid table and with only five weeks to go, next week could see some decisive moves in the standings.

Sunday Quiz League

Soi 6 Quiz League

PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Bangpakong Monday July 25 2005 Stableford

With the stand in organizers once again in attendance, sixteen stealthy golfers from the Kronborg teed off for this Mondays tournament following a long journey north to cross the Bangpakong River.

It’s unfortunate that this excellent venue is not a bit closer to home as the additional traveling does tend to deter a number of players who subsequently miss out on enjoying a very good golf course.

On with the tournament then and although undergoing a degree of seasonal course maintenance, resulting amongst other things in the absence of the hole marker boards indicating yardage and hole layout etc, the course still played as well as we have come to expect.

Now as we all know preparation in Golf is everything and while some prepare by arriving early and having a few chips, putts, press ups etc, others with more natural ability merely turn up on the tee and ‘grip it and rip it’.

The latter was obviously the case for this week’s winner Graham Hiskett who, following an unscheduled tour of the Bankpakong region due to a navigational error, dashed to the tee some time after everyone else and proceeded to card an excellent 43pts on this tricky course.

Second place was taken by the amiable Bob Rasmussen (38pts) with Kuni Wakabayashi (36 pts) in third and Mike Gassau once again in the frame taking fourth.

No disasters this week for the ‘stand-ins’ for a change and with the Admiral getting his sea legs back next week it should be plain sailing from now on..

Twice a week now on the card...

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

The week ahead looked promising at Bert’s, as not only were we to play on Tuesday, but a friendly days golf was to be taken on Friday, also with a good breakfast, and fish and chips on return. Bert takes care of his golfers well. If it is well received, Friday golf will be played at Bert’s, except on the day of The PSC Monthly Tournament. It is a fine day out, so come along.

Tuesday July 26 Eastern Star Stableford

Winners plus Cookie.

So after the breakfast off we went to Eastern Star. This course is making a real effort to be a top golf course. Major attempts are being made to look after the greens, the biggest weakness here, but the course is a fine, well designed course, with rough that breaks your hands and a toughness that breaks your spirit on a bad day.

Technical Winners plus Cookie.

On the day the players had a fine round, and later back at Bert’s as the players tucked into one of his cold salads, all agreed it was a fine venue.

Bob did the presentation, and a nice touch was that Ray Sperling came to the fore to win, ahead of Pete King in second

Winner: Ray Sperling, Runner Up Pete King

Near Pins: Derek Brook, Jeff Wylie (2), Bob Pearce, Ian Kiss and Peter King.

Long Putts: Bill Knight, Bob 4U, Paul Sharples

Friday July 29 Burapha Stableford

On arriving at Bert’s a nice innovation was that the staff brought you individual breakfasts, egg, bacon and toast, and of course hot coffee. Another day I do not have to cook my own breakfast.

Bert with Steve Hanstad (left) and Matt Lamoon (right).

So off we went to Burapha, and the nice surprise when we got there was that we were to play the A & B Layouts. Of late all four have been mixed, but for me this combination is the best, a fine course with a fine layout, user friendly and a great day out.

On the day Steve Hamstad came to the fore, playing one of his best rounds of the year, and won by a street. Back at Berts, we were served with fish and chips. I have to say the fish was the best I have tasted here, and was well appreciated by all. We then celebrated new golfer, Matt Lamoon’s, first ever mention in dispatches, and his trip home next day. T.T.F.N.

Winner: Steve Hanstad

Near Pins: Bob Benda, Derek Brook, Matt Lamoon, Steve Hamsted.

Bettany inscribed at last

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Last Monday of the month - time for the monthly winner to top off the month of July. It was fitting that Andy Bettany who donated the trophy finally came through to have his name engraved on the Three Sisters Trophy. Every last Monday of the month a new name or a repeat has his name engraved as the monthly winner for that month. Andy came in with a blistering 46 points. We thought it might have been a 48 but the new handicaps showed that he was playing off of 18 instead of 20. It was a great day for Andy by any standard.

Andy Bettany (right) finally has his name engraved on the trophy he donated as Jim Tully (left) faced some tough competition to gain control of the bag.

Coming in a scant three shots back was Larry Ball with 43 points. Larry had an excellent game for most days except for today. He got hammered like the rest of us. Larry has been the bridesmaid a couple of times now and should be heading for the top shortly.

Following Andy and Larry were Doug Chalkey with 39 points and Herb Ishinaga with 38. Good scores but no chance at the title. It looks like handicaps will be coming down for a few of the boys.

Protecting the bag for the umpteenth time was Good Ole Jim Tully. Last week he had a good score but his clubs failed him today. Larry Willett tried to give Tully some competition but fell short by 5 shots. Tully came in with 20 points as Larry tried to snatch the bag with 25 - It was a no contest situation.

PSC golf with The Bunker

Crystal Bay Golf Course (A & B) Monday July 25

A Brilliant day on a brilliant course at Crystal Bay. The field was split as usual. In division “A” still playing on top form Paul Smith won with a net score of 65, seven under par. Second was William Macey, level par of 72 net and third came Geoff Parker with a score of 73. Bob Turner won “B” division, 69 net. Second was Bryan Rought 71 net and third place was shared by Mick Ramshaw and Neil Griffin both with 76 net. Near the pins were Bob Turner, J.J. Harney, Bob Pearce and Geoff Parker.

John Enjoyed some good play resulting in some prize winnings and a few Near Pins prizes.

Eastern Star Country Club - Wednesday July 27

Eastern Star had sanded greens for the Bunker Boys visit but that made no difference to the players. Especially Paul Smith who once again defeated the field with 39 stableford points to take first prize in division “A”. Tied for second place were John King and Granville Swanton both with 34 points. Once a week golfer John Preddy won division “B” with 31 points. Second was David Johnson with 25 points and in third place came sunny Ruth Sip with 24 points. Near the pins were won by Paul Smith and Mark Thomas.

Pattaya Country Club - Friday July 29

Pattaya Country Club always has a large following. We also welcomed a few new players to join in on our medal competition. Division “A” was won by Bob Pearce with a net 69, followed by John King with 68 net. William Macey and Gary Bancroft both with a score of 71 shared third place. In division “B” there were joint winners between Geordie Hudson and Bryan Rought bot with a winning score of 73. Third place went to Mick Ramshaw with 76 net. Near the pins were won by Paul Smith (2), John King and Terry Phur.

Tom hangs tough at Treasure Hills

PSC golf from the Grapevine

Thursday, July 28 saw The Grapevine golfers head up Highway 33 to play the tough Treasure Hills course off the white markers, made all the tougher by being the black yardages on many holes. Scores reflected this with only winner Tom Herrington cracking better than 30 points. Runner-up was awarded to a surprised Steve Hamstad who thought his 29 would be well short of the prizes. Some recent rains have greened the course up, but some poor lies were still to be had here and there.

Technical prizes were shared between Tom and Colin, with each getting a long putt, while Tom had 2 nearest to the pins and Colin just the one.

This week we had the famous double-baked potatoes, roast chicken, gravy, and broccoli for dinner - a well deserved meal after a hard day at the course. With cold beer and a liberal helping of ‘what could have been’ stories, all were in agreement that a good day was had, and that today was one where the golf course won the day - but there is always next week!

If you’re up for some good golf with a fun, easy-going group of people, and good food come on down to The Grapevine and sign up for Thursday golf. Cheers and good golfing. (JW)

Never mind the score, we enjoyed the game

A friendship football match between the Horseshoe Point Resort & Country Club and our Pattaya Mail team took place last Sunday, with each side fielding its best players to battle it out on the resort’s turf.

Pattaya Mail’s No. 11, Ariyawat shoots for goal - he scores! Never mind it was a football friendly anyway.

Jate Sopitapongsatorn, Horseshoe Point general manager led the resort 11 against the Pattaya Mail team led by Tony Malhotra. The first 15 minutes went well, but after that the PM player substitution rate began to climb inexorably. Tony admitted that our team was not practicing as often and regularly as the opponents were. And running up and down the 100-yard Horseshoe Point field is no light matter. Tony’s request to just ignore the score, remember only the good times and the appreciative audience, was well heeded.

After the fun match, some went on to swimming and a polo game, and the day ended with a good dinner together. The reunion match is planned for next year. Just time for the Pattaya Mail lads to get in some exercise.

The Beautiful Game?: Differing worries for Glasgow Giants

Riz Taylor

The new season kicked off last Saturday, in Scotland at least. Whilst it’s been more than twenty years since another club broke the stranglehold of the Old Firm, finishing second means little or nothing to the two Glaswegian sides. With this level of expectation comes a unique pressure of its own, as the latest arrival in Celtic’s hot seat has found out for himself after less than a fortnight of competitive football.

Perhaps it was fate that dealt Celtic an unwanted trip to Fir Park for their opening game against Terry Butcher’s Motherwell. Gordon Strachan would face more attention in this fixture than any other, as this was the scene of last season’s final day disaster when the Bhoys were sunk by two Scott McDonald goals that lost Celtic the SPL title.

Things started promisingly as a first half hat-trick from John Hartson saw Celtic go into the break with 3-1 lead. Yet Motherwell refused to buckle and stormed back into the contest in the second half with goals from Jim Hamilton, that man Scott McDonald again and William Kinniburgh, and led 4-3 as the ninety minute mark ticked by. It was left to substitute Craig Beattie to spare a few Celtic blushes with a late, late equaliser and earn his side a point with a well taken finish.

The most worrying aspect of the result for Strachan was that the four goals conceded brought the tally to nine in two games, the other five coming at the hands of Slovakian minnows Artmedia Petrzalka in Bratislava, as a woeful Celtic left themselves a mountain to climb to stand a chance of qualifying for the Champions League group stages.

Strachan, never one to mince words, admitted that his ageing squad is in need of major surgery, particularly in the defence:

“I don’t think anyone thought we would lose that many goals. To concede as easily as that is hard to take,” he said. “It’s obvious where we need to sort things out, but it must happen quickly.”

His side’s problems will be well received over the way at neighbours and best friends Rangers, who of course were the beneficiaries of Celtic’s final day upset last term. But the Ibrox side have headaches of their own, including a desperate shortage of funds. Manager Alex McCleish had been hoping to offload a number of high-earners this summer but has had only limited success, meaning only unproven free transfers have arrived during the summer.

‘Ger’s big test comes next week as they themselves attempt to qualify for the Champions League group stage, where they will play Trabzonspor or Anorthosis Famagusta.

The income generated from a European campaign will be most welcomed, but the flipside is that the Light Blues will be somewhat distracted from the SPL campaign, perhaps handing an advantage to Celtic and the desperate Strachan.

It all adds-up to an intriguing season ahead in Scotland, which although often dismissed as a two-horse race is also capable of throwing up a surprise or two.

Striker for sale, one careful owner

Star-studded Real Madrid arrived in Thailand last week and duly dispensed with the Thai under-23 team by three goals to nil in Bangkok, watched by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra among others.

As the Spanish giants head home to prepare for another Liga campaign, the starting eleven is far from settled. Julio Baptista will soon arrive at the Bernabeu after turning down a move to Arsenal, preferring instead to remain in Spain to claim Spanish citizenship. The club have also finally reached an agreement with Santos for Brazilian wonder kid Robinho.

All this spells bad news for England’s Michael Owen, who will now find himself further down a Madrid pecking order that also boasts Ronaldo and Raul. In this, an important World Cup year, Owen will now be forced to consider plying his trade elsewhere to get regular football.

That is most likely to be in England. The pint-sized marksman fancies a move home, but seemingly only to one of the biggest sides after already spurning advances from Everton and Newcastle United. With Jose Mourinho thought to be uninterested and Liverpool having signed Peter Crouch from Southampton, an unlikely move to Manchester United could be in the offing. Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be an admirer of Owen and with the former European Player of the Year available at around 12 million pounds the Scot may be banging down Real’s door even as you read this.

With Owen seemingly on his way it will be Jonathan Woodgate that takes over the coveted position of Madrid’s second most famous Englishman. The defender sounded upbeat when asked about his continuing injury problems that have prevented his debut.

“I’ve been sprinting and kicking the ball as well as doing other recovery exercises. The injury is fine and I will feel even better when I start playing again. The truth is I’m dying to play again. Hopefully the manager will play me.”

Asked if there was any truth in media speculation linking him with a move back home, Woodgate underlined his intent to make a decent fist of his Spanish adventure: “It is not true,” he said. “I want to prove what I’m worth as a player and I want to play for Real Madrid. It would be a big mistake to return to England and let an opportunity like this pass me by.”

Stars of yesterday battle on

Dwight Yorke has played his first couple of warm-up games for Sydney FC as he begins his life ‘Down Under’ in the A-League, which kicks off on August 26. And whilst we’re talking about big names in unlikely locations, Nwankwo Kanu has been spotted in a Plymouth restaurant, sparking rumours of an impending move to Argyle. “Since I was a boy growing up in Nigeria it has always been a dream to pull on the famous green jersey of Plymouth Argyle”, the former Arsenal forward didn’t say.

Looking for a hit

Hi,

I am a regular visitor to Pattaya and a regular reader of the Pattaya mail. Here in England I have started playing of Badminton. I was recently in Pattaya and could not find any clubs where I could play Badminton.

Also whenever I read the sport pages of the Pattaya mail there is no mention of the game. My next trip to Pattaya will be for Christmas and New Year, whilst I’m in Pattaya, I would like to play Badminton to help counter the excess food and drink I will be consuming over the Christmas/New Year period.

Can anyone supply me with details of any Badminton clubs in the Pattaya area. Thank you.
Cheers
Brian Adams

Impending return of local sportsman...

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Could be a super fight in the offing for the Lads and Shelia’s from the land of “tossing a shrimp on the Barbie.” Yep, Ray Wheatley writing for the World of Boxing is reporting that a “Mega Match” between Danny Green and Anthony Mundine is in the offing. “No, or that’s a different kind of ‘offing” as in the near future.” Both are boxers are former champs at 168 except Green’s title some with the note “interim”. Both fighters have a following and if the fight occurs it promises to be a “Mega” Event. Now you may well ask, so ask, what was the largest attended fight in Aussie? Well Mr. Wheatley has the answer, “The record Australian gate was achieved when 37,000 attended Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson in Melbourne, Victoria in March 1992 to see Nelson score a eighth round knockout to retain the WBC jr lightweight crown.”

Further quoting Mr. Wheatley, “Mundine said, “It’s time for it to happen. I want it before I want the world title. I want to give the fans what they want. There has been so much talk, it’s time for the talk to end. Let’s get it on. It’s what we have both been working towards for a long time. I know we both want to make it happen for the people out there and for our own personal pride, to finally show who is the best. “Notice how after Mr. Mundine said, “it’s time for the talk to end”, he went on and on and on? From the Green camp comes, “Of course we want it to happen. All they have to do is ring us. We want to give the fans what they want to see and that is Green vs Mundine. We’re ready to talk. We’re not going to sit down and say we want X, Y money but we have to talk realistic terms. We’ve got a plan for Pemberton and Beyer fights, but Mundine is always on the radar. It is going to happen and happen soon. All things being equal, it will happen in the next 12 months. “First for Green lurks Yank Scott Pemberton but you knew that cause you read it in The Square Ring so it must be true. Got to watch out for them “Lurking Yanks.”

Another fight a lot closer is Jeff Lacy (19-0) when he puts his IBF Title on the line against veteran Robin Reid (38-4-1) on Sunday morn in the Land of Smiles, Pole Hangers and Guys looking for the Fountain of Youth. The latter can be found at most watering holes for a small investment. I should mention the fact that somewhere in Thailand today Ratanachai Vorapin (63-8) is defending his WBO Bantamweight title against. Mauricio Martinez (28-5-1) for the first time. He won the title in May of 2004 and waiting a year plus for the first defense does seem a bit much. In the interim Vorapin has gone 7 and 0 in paid workouts. Back to Reid and Lacy, Jeff “left hook” Lacy is part of the Yank Olympic team that included new Middleweight Champ Jermane Taylor. This will be Lacy’s third defense of the Super Middle title he won by defeating Sid Vanderpool (TKO 8) who actually fought his best fght in losing. Lacy’s two previous defenses were against Omar Sheika (UD 12) and Rubin Williams (TKO 7). It’s always good to state the oblivious (“I like you”, “You Like me”, “I Like Baht”). The Square Ring will, not only is Reid the most experienced fighter that Lacy’s fought but probably the best. Reid’s 4 loses have come in title fights against quality champions Sven Ottke (32-0), Silvio Branco (39-4), Joe Calzaghe (25-0) and Thulane Malinga (41-10).

Kinda of been following the career of featherweight Alex Arthur of Scotland. Why? Well he’s a training mate of the king of the Second Road “Dapper” Dave Stewart. Arthur improved his record to 21-1 when he scored, actually the judges scored, a unanimous decision over Boris Sintsin (46-8). Despite cuts over both eyes Arthur decked Sinitsin in the 12th to seal the deal. The win added the European super feather title to the British Commonwealth belt in the Arthur trophy case. Some local lads will be in title action in the coming month. First up on the 21st of the month unbeaten sensational flyweight prospect Koki Kameda (7-0, 6 KOs) gets a shot at the POBF 112 title held by Wanmeechok Singwangcha (12-2). The Thai lad lost his first two but now run off a string of 12 on the trot. Kameda is no slouch as he took out for WBC 108 champ Saman Sorjaturong. The local press describes Kameda as, “The flamboyant big mouth Kameda.”

Would you be surprised if I told you that WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wanjongkam (57-2, 31 KOs) got paid bucks for his paid workout against WBF international 115lb title holder Mark Sales on Friday at Porkungpao Restaurant, Udomsuk Branch, in Bangkok. Or how about, WBC#2 superfly Medgoen Singsurat (42-3) “excitingly retained his WBC Asian Boxing Council (ABCO) 115lb title by defeating WBF international 118lb champion Rodel (Kid) Orais (reportedly 13-16-1,5 KOs)?” Well then let’s move on.

On August 24 there’s a card at the Dusit School Stadium in Mangrom Doistrict, Chainart. True fact. Long time WBC Champ Veeraphol Sahaprom (48-2) gets a former challenger for the WBO title in Roy Doliguez who’s 16-9 record is really 12-9. Doliguez has lost 7 of his last 8. Wanna bet that become 8 of last 9? Veeraphol was sailing along as a WBC Champ, in a couple of divisions, since 1998 when he ran into Hozumi Hassegawa (17-2) last April. While he lost a UD (113-115, 113-115, 112-116) one round and it would have been a draw with Veeraphol still be the champ. Interesting, maybe, that the judge that scored the fight 116-112 for Hassegawa was Duane Ford who scored for Bernard Hopkins against Jermane Taylor. So?

If you had pencilled in a rematch between Hopkins-Taylor for October 1, use the other end of the pencil and erase. Not going to happen. The cut on the top of Taylor’s head, caused by a butt, will take at least a couple of months to heal. I should maybe have typed “unintentional heads butt”, except that with Hopkins nothing is “unintentional.” In place of the rematch cable giant will present Tarvor-Jones jr. three. BFD. The first two were bombs this one probably will be also. In the meantime Hopkins-Taylor is on the schedule for December 3. “I guess I’ll just have to knock him out and take it out of the judges’ hands, so there can be no doubt whatsoever,” Hopkins told the Philadelphia Daily News. “If Taylor needs until December 3, I’ll let him heal and rest up, because I don’t want him having any excuses that he had a concussion or whatever.”

Remember the advice of or and The Square Ring, take Taylor. A little wisdom from Hopkins, such as it is, “Controversy sells,” Yes but being a horse’s ass doesn’t. Yes I’ll have a tiddley.

The second Evason Phuket Raceweek: An outstanding success

Peter Cummins,
Phuket

Beautiful west-south-westerlies blew during the four-day racing week, at around 10 knots, lifting to gusts of up to 28, at times, , with moderate seas: ideal for the 30-strong fleet of five classes and perfect for the contingent of photographers and for the committee boat, manned by the incomparable principal race officer, Sunsail’s Simon James and his trusty New Zealand colleague, John MacLennon, The “Seraph” was anchored off the northern tip of Ko Bon.

The Phuket Race week featured courses set for maximum spectator appeal, with the racing to be held just offshore Evason Phuket Resort. (file photo)

Meantime, a lot of interest was displayed in the incredible new Multihull racing craft, commissioned by Olaf Reese, of Royal Varuna and Ocean Marina Yacht Clubs

specific reasons!) sailed by Mark Pescott and built in Phuket by the two Marks (not for two marks!) - Pescott and Ao Chalong Yacht Club’s Mark Horwood.

A surprise package during the four-day week, was the press conference held at Mom Tri’s Villa Royale on Kata Beach, to show the complementarities between these two regattas - in fact, the symbiosis of yacht racing and the burgeoning marine infrastructure in general. A number of the principals the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, scheduled for it’s 19th sailing this December joined with major sponsor Raimon Land, to preview the event.

As the second Evason Phuket Raceweek Regatta closed last Sunday, with another perfect day, although a cloud cover earlier, a ‘cracking’ west-south-westerly wind of around 20 knots and a great feeling that not only has yacht racing made a quantum leap forward, but Phuket has regained some of its pre-Tsunami prominence as a place to be enjoyed by all - on land and on sea.

Two very happy people at the regatta’s end were Grenville Fordham and Andy Dowden, the directors of principal sponsor Image Asia - and the master-minds behind the whole show, from a losing proposition last year to a smashing success this time.

The Five-star Evason Phuket Resort and Six Senses Spa has been the ‘home’ of all activities, with racing around the beautiful Laem Ka Bay, clearly visible from the numerous vantage points around the resort and all social activities taking place right at the Evason’s water-side “Into the Beach” bar. In fact, so convenient has everything been that the sailors merely had to ‘step’ ashore from their craft, anchored off the resort, and walk straight into one of the nightly sponsor’s parties.

Although Day Three on Saturday gave the fleets a fair battering, nevertheless, it was gentle and warm right throughout the regatta.

With great support from Raimon Land, the developer which sees the environmental-purity of yacht racing and marine sports generally as well worthy of support, the island’s marinas, the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Varuna and the Ao Chalong Yacht Clubs, Sunsail, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Phuket International Hospital were among the many who are behind the regatta.

Furthermore, in a gesture of solidarity, to support the marine sector specifically and Thailand generally, the Kingdom’s oldest and longest-running event, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta joined the Phuket Raceweek as a co-supporter.

Although the regatta started with an entry of 30 craft, more than double the inaugural event in 2004, there were a few casualties, such as IRC 2, “Ava” which sank, Viroj Nualkair’s “Ma Du Zi” which never appeared and the quickly-launched Multihull Racing Class entry “Voodoo Child” which had two first placings in the two races entered, but was missing that essential “shake-down” cruise, to iron out any early problems.

Furthermore, one of the highlights of the regatta was the success and prowess of Phuket-built and sailed yachts such as the Phuket 8 class and the fact that out of the 30 entries, many were from outside Thailand, giving the regatta an imprimatur of internationalism.

Full results (points, counting five races out of six sailed).

Josh Lee, “Vino by Watermark” (26); 6. Horst Lakits, “Big A” (28); 7. Keith Garry, “Beaux Esprits” (29 ); 8. Mark Horwood, “Image Asia Attitude (33).
