Celebrating the First Cycle of Civic Dedication

Pattaya Mail 12th Anniversary

On the 23rd of July every year Pattaya Mail staff and family gather together to celebrate what has become a tradition, the anniversary of the founding and the publishing of the very first issue of the Pattaya Mail on July 23, 1993.

This year's celebration was a very special one as we celebrated the 12th anniversary, which is also considered the completion of the first cycle. We also celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the Pattaya Blatt, our German language newspaper which was on the 7th of July and of course the launching of the prestigious cooperation between Pattaya Mail Media Co. Ltd. producers of the Pattaya Mail on TV show, and the Associated Press Television News (APTN).

On hand to welcome our guests were Pratheep Malhotra, MD of the company, along with top executives, including Dan Dorothy, our executive editor, and the whole Pattaya Mail family.

The list of dignitaries who came by to wish us well was endless, but of note were Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn, Santsak Ngamphiches, former MP and advisor to the minister of health, Sutham Phanthusak, international commissioner of the National Scouts Organization of Thailand, Panga Vathanakul, MD of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Andrew Khoo, GM of the Hard Rock Hotel, Brian Sinclair-Thompson manager of Swiss International Airlines and family, Wolfgang Schmidt, manager of Lufthansa Airlines plus many more that if we named them all, it would take up most of the paper.

A person who we could never live without is Sopin Thappajug (Aunty Noi), MD of the Diana Group, who has not only been our patron from day one but has supported us in all our endeavors throughout the years. Aunty Noi surely must have the distinction of having the biggest family in Pattaya.

The ceremonies were conducted by the venerable Phra Khru Patrakijviboon (Acharn Kan), abbot of Wat Huay Yai Temple and 8 other holy monks. Pattaya Mail and our staff hold Acharn Kan in the highest esteem and he has blessed us by his presence at our premises at least once a year.

At the auspicious moment, Peter Malhotra signed an agreement of cooperation between the Pattaya Mail Media Co. Ltd and Associated Press Television News (APTN). See story on page 5.

Not only that but an agreement was also signed between PMTV and the Diana Group making them one of the first clients of our TV show. This we felt was very auspicious, as it will definitely enhance more business from the Pattaya community.

At the end of the ceremonies, a little birthday party was organized for the staff where many cakes, compliments of our friends in the various hotels, were ceremoniously carried into the room by Dan Dorothy, adorned with colorful candles, which were blown out in three sessions by all our staff while happy birthday songs were sung.

Again we wish to thank all those who attended and wished us well, even those who couldn't attend but send us messages of goodwill.

We the staff of Pattaya Mail pledge to do our utmost to fulfill our solemn obligations to devote ourselves to serve the community not only in our professions but also in our commitment to society as a whole.

Dear Friends,

I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who attended the blessings ceremonies on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the Pattaya Mail and for bringing along your good wishes.

I also express sincere thanks to those who were unable to attend, but sent messages of goodwill by telephone, fax, e-mail and sms.

I will thank you individually when next we meet. Until then, please accept my appreciation in this message.

To all our readers, clients, family, friends and acquaintances, I have special thanks for all of you. Without your devotion and support, we would not have been able to come so far in this most challenging mission.

We will honour our solemn obligation to continue to serve Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard with top-quality news and information, and with our ongoing commitment to the betterment of our community and enhancing the quality of life of the less fortunate.

To our advertising clients, we pledge not only to give you the best service in optimizing your advertising displays, but also to continue to increase and improve our distribution network, which is presently the largest in Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard, to ensure that your messages will reach your intended consumer targets.

Last but not least, to my Pattaya Mail family … thank you.
Humbly I bow to thee,

I would like to say thank you, and I hope Pattaya Mail will continue in Pattaya City and the eastern part of Thailand for a long time to come.

Chanyuth Hengtrakul

We, the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, would like to wish Khun Peter and the Pattaya Mail our best wishes and many congratulations on your 12th anniversary.

Panga Vathanakul

The paper is producing very good articles, especially for the community, and I wish the Pattaya Mail many more years of success and prosperity. My only wish is that Pattaya Mail will also produce a Thai language newspaper for Chonburi. I am looking forward to Pattaya Mail’s new TV channel.

Andrew Khoo

I would like to take this opportunity to deliver my good wishes to Pattaya Mail Newspaper and I hope your popularity will grow even more in the future. Pattaya Mail has become the best newspaper in Pattaya and eastern coast of Thailand.

Sutham Phanthusak

I would like to convey my wishes from my heart on the 12th anniversary of Pattaya Mail Newspaper, which I see as one of the most important tools to inform all English-speaking visitors to the town of Pattaya. They are able to get an update on what’s going on, what you can do, what’s been done in the past, and what’s going to be done in the future. Once again my heart felt congratulations.

Suchada Tupchai

A fund-raising fashion show was amongst the events held during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Burapha University this month.

Prof Suchat Upatham presents an opening speech for the fashion show.

The show, opened by university president Prof Suchat Upatham and led by Satil Khunplome, president of the board of Eastern Women’s Development, was staged at the nutrition building on the campus and attended by many well known dignitaries and personalities. Funds raised will go towards the purchase of equipment for the university hospital.

Prof Suchat said that Burapha was the first provincial university to produce bachelor degree students. Future plans include courses in the Chinese and Korean languages. Chinese is seen as being a particularly important business language, and a budget of 70 million baht has been approved to establish a Chinese language centre.

Tony Malhotra and Mukda Pattana-anek were the masters of ceremonies

Other major activities to mark the 50th anniversary year include a donation project to buy medical equipment for Burapha University Hospital, and the opening of the 50th Year Building, which will be a multi-purpose unit to support university development.

On the same day as the fashion show the university also organized a musical drama, “Bangsaen Love Story”. Devised by head of musical drama Sukanya Buranadaechachai, the story told of “Mukda”, a modern-minded lady of 1957 who decided she would learn fashion at the new provincial university in Bangsaen. Her experiences taught her that life is not easy, but along with the difficulties come learning, friendship and hope.

Satil Khunplome, president of the board of Eastern Women’s Development, participated in the fashion show.

The newly written show, which featured songs from 50 years ago, told much of the history of the university. Burapha appears to have a hit on its hands. The first show was packed out, and the “Bangsaen Love Story” was being distributed outside the show on VCD.

Chief organizer of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Assistant Prof Suda Suwannapirom said that other activities have included prize giving, a Burapha technique open house, an alumnus football match, an OTOP fair with over 200 booths, and an exhibition.

Burapha University was the first official university established in the provinces, opening its doors on July 8, 1955. The original name was Bangsaen Educational University. The first bachelor’s degree students, a total of 35, graduated in 1958.

The university now has 10 faculties and six colleges. It produces bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in a total of 134 subjects, and has over 3,700 graduating bachelors per year.

A sell-out for the PSC Summer Party

Mike Franklin

Pattaya Sports Club held its annual Summer Party at the Town in Town Hotel on Wednesday 6th July, ten days after the PSC Annual General Meeting at the same venue.

Doug Powel put in a sterling effort in organising this year’s PSC Summer Party.

It was a sell-out with all 450 tickets being taken up by members, who attend this party free of charge, and their paying guests.

The Summer Party features four main attractions apart from the free-flowing bar.

First the popular raffle with a wide range of valuable prizes, including gold up to one baht weight. Gone this year were the customary toasters, rice-makers and kettles in favor of more varied and attractive items.

Second is the food and the Town in Town Hotel has become the regular venue for the PSC Summer and Christmas parties, and deservedly so due to the high quality of the extensive dinner buffet that includes a very popular seafood barbeque, and the excellent service by the friendly staff at table.

The talented Mike ‘Elvis’ Gerrard interacted well with his audience entertaining everyone at the same time.

The new party chairman, Doug Powell, who claimed to have ‘never done it before’, did an excellent job on his debut and put a grand evening together. He chose the third attraction well: the band. It was a band to listen to and enjoy with early dancers on the floor without any encouragement from the emcee.

As always, the Town in Town Hotel put on a magnificent buffet for the 450 plus part goers.

Re-elected president, Gerry Carpenter, gave the traditional welcoming speech that was worth listening to as he related the extensive and carefully planned charity work that PSC had undertaken throughout the PSC year, under the enthusiastic leadership of charity chairman, Bernie Tuppin. The other members of the slimmed down PSC executive committee were introduced, as previously reported in an earlier edition of Pattaya Mail.

The summer party is always a good place to relax, chat and drink among friends.

The final attraction is entertainment and non better than having a talented pro like Mike Gerrard. No-one sleeps, or ignores the speaker, while he is on. Mike really set the pace for the evening, interacted well with his audience, and gave a versatile performance. Many functions suffer through poor quality of the PA system, but no chance of that when Gerrard gets his ‘mike’ out of the bag.

So the pictures say it all. The evening was a good mix of wining & dining, excellent music and entertainment, an exciting raffle with gold to be won, and a look forward to December and the PSC Christmas Party. Well done Doug Powell – see you again at Christmas.

The party was also a good night out for PSC families.
