Running Club’s Dzikowski first over line

Over 1000 take part in Walk-Run Meditation race

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Raymond Dzikowski from the Pattaya Running Club was the first to cross the finish line in the 10km Pattaya Walk-Run event held last Friday afternoon. He was presented with the Prime Minister’s Trophy at the prize giving ceremonies later that evening.

Raymond Dzikowski from the Pattaya Running Club was first to cross the finish line in the 10km Pattaya Walk-Run event.

The Walk-Run Meditation was held in unison with 10 other provinces around Thailand as part of the celebrations denoting the beginning of Buddhist Lent.

Pattaya City hosted the Chonburi programme with numerous teams from throughout the province, residents and tourists taking part.

Over a thousand people lined up at Bali Hai Pier ready for the 5 p.m. start on Friday. City administrators symbolically poured alcohol from bottles on to the ground, as this event was aimed at encouraging abstinence over the next three months.

Anupong Udomratankulchai, past Pattaya mayor and president of the Pattaya Running Club for Health pouring alcohol from the bottle, symbolising abstinence over the next three months of Buddhist Lent.

The run and walk coincided with similar events in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Rachasima, Nakhon Suwan, Songkhla, Saraburi, Samut Sakhon, Ubon Rachathani and Udon Thani and was organised by the Health Investment Office. The concept was to promote attention and focus while running and walking - a moving meditation - for everyone to use in their daily lives.

In Pattaya, runners chose between a 3km walk or a 10km run which took them from the Bali Hai area along Pattaya Second Road and back along Beach Road.

Well over 1,000 people from all “walks” of life joined in...

With multiple participants the results saw many enthusiasts take top placings.

In the under-15s, Phanupong Jumnong won the boys’ class while Orawan Praianand took the girls’ division. In the 16-39 group, Krisada Phinyo won the men’s and Prapan Khumburi, from the Sattahip Navy, won the women’s category.

In the over-40 group, and overall winner, Raymond Dzikowski was first to cross the line on completing the 10km course. He had already competed in the 21km Pattaya Marathon just five days earlier. In the ladies’ division, Wilaiwan Karchontathong was first to cross the line.

Numerous activities and shows accompanied the prize-giving ceremonies that evening.

Pattaya Bowling Club hosts tournament to raise funds for national team

Narisa Nitikarn

The profile of 10-pin bowling in Pattaya is on the rise, and with it comes the need to support those bowlers aiming to represent their teams or country in regional and international events.

On July 17, the Pattaya Bowling Club hosted a tournament to raise funds for players entering the national team. The inaugural bowling tournament drew 80 teams from Pattaya and Chonburi to compete for the Chonburi MP Trophy at the Bowling Plus lanes (fka Pattaya Bowl).

The heat of competition at the re-opened Bowling Plus lanes in North Pattaya.

Bowlers were welcomed by Sanga Kijsamrej, Pattaya Entrepreneurs Club president, Somsin Thipmanee, Banglumng Cable TV manager and Sotawan Senaphan, Pattaya Bowling Club president at the start of the competition.

Chanyuth Hengtrakul, Chonburi MP who also gave his name to the trophy, presided over the opening of the competition, with winners being sent to qualify for the national team.

Competition was separated into team and individual (both men’s and women’s) categories through the day. The best male and female bowlers were awarded prizes for the highest series and games. However, it was the 3535 team, led by local league bowler Kran Nielsen, who claimed the main trophy for the event with a total score of 1,538 points.

Youth football contest kicks off with scholarships as prizes

The sports field at Pattaya School No 7, Nongpankhae, played host to the start of the city’s latest youth sports project aimed at those looking for healthy competition as opposed to the lures of drug use.

A Pattaya School No 9 (right) player tackles the opposition from School No 7 (left) on the field during the opening of the football competition. The home team, Pattaya School No 7 defeated the visitors 2 goals to 1.

Deputy mayors Wattana Chantaworanont and Wirawat Khakhai along with a number of city councillors attended the opening of the new football competition series that will run until August 10.

Designed as an annual event, the series has 10 teams from schools throughout Pattaya competing in under-12s and under-15s matches. The first round, on July 20, saw a total of 10 teams in each class joining the event, each vying for first place and scholarships valued 10,000 baht, 8,000 and 6,000 for the first three places. Individual trophies and scholarships for outstanding players are also part of this competition.

“I call on all players to do their best, play as a team and remember the qualities of good sportspersons in the spirit of competition,” said Deputy Mayor Wattana, during his opening speech.

“It is up to everyone to develop their skills and themselves to grow and become valuable members of the community.”

Down-the-middle Bauman too good at Ban Chang

PSC McAllister’s Golf

Under overcast skies and a welcome breeze, 19 golfers teed off at Century Ban Chang for the regular Friday McAllister’s Golf on July 22. The lower than usual turnout was likely attributed to the observance of Buddhist Lent, although there is also a suspicion that some of the regulars may have thought that the post game celebrations at McAllister Bar & Grill would be more muted than usual. Those same regulars, however, may have underestimated the commitment of Don McAllister to ensure that the returning golfers and visitors were treated with the usual array of delights for the afternoon.

Winner Carl Baumann in an earlier photo.

Carl Bauman showed more than a few glimpses of his former self as a single digit handicapper, scoring 42 stableford points to cruise to victory. Striking the ball beautifully, he was never in serious trouble despite the urging of his playing partners to commit at least a few of the usual errors expected of a golfer with a handicap in the twenties. The handicap committee at PSC will no doubt make it a little more difficult for Carl to repeat the performance. Dan Sell was absolutely thrilled with his game, scoring 39 points to beat Dennis Willett on countback, and secure second place. Fourth place went to Graham Hiskett, no stranger to the winners’ circle, with 38 points. We were informed that Paul Kraft looked like running away with the tournament until he “swallowed the olive” on the 16th tee, although he did manage to win 12 skins from Bill Thompson and Dennis Willett through his efforts up until that point.

Back at McAllister Bar & Grill, the smaller than usual crowd of golfers were joined by Sus Ige recovering from knee surgery and Dene Mundy recovering from a bout of the flu, to ensure that the noise level and merriment were up to the usual volumes.

Terry Phurrs with delight

IPGC golf from The Haven

Century Ban Chang
Stableford

1st Terry Phur, 39 pts -c/b20 c/b3 8
2nd Brian Kelly, 39 pts - c/b20 c/b3 6
3rd Trevor Schirmer, 39 pts - c/b 19
4th John Squitero, 38 pts
5th Barry Winton, 36 pts

As usual a large contingent turned out for the enjoyable trip down to Ban Chang, in fact just one more golfer would have made for two divisions, so big prizes for the winners! The day started hot and humid but soon changed as black clouds and distant thunder rolled across the hills. Was it to be yet another day of fright as at Royal Lakeside last Friday? No thank heavens, the lightening and thunder moved away, taking the rain with it and left near perfect conditions for a great day’s golf with scores to match! Over 60% of the field shot 30 plus points and only a series of countbacks could separate the top three. Trevor & Brian being the unlucky ones as Terry finished in some style with 8 of his 20 points on the back 9 coming in the last three holes. A superb effort by Terry who has been in the wilderness for some considerably time! In the 2s competition, Roy Thornton & Graham Davis shared the pool in division 1, whilst Jan Eriksen scooped the double rollover jackpot in division 2. Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed John Shadbolt and welcomed back Graham Bowden.

3rd Mike Dabanovich, net 73
4th Glyn Nicholas, net 74

A pleasant day greeted a slightly smaller field than usually expected at Green Valley, the weather still remained humid, though no sign of any storms for a change. Unfortunately, the greens had clearly not been cut for a while and played dreadfully slow. Those who practise their putting on the bedroom carpet were at home but others, especially those who spent a few minutes on the lightening fast practise green were woefully short all day! Scores were generally poor and only Takeshi was able to shoot below his handicap! Steady Trevor, now moving closer and closer to a single figure handicap was there as usual closely followed by Dabber & Glyn. Interesting to note that only Barry Winton managed a par on hole 1 whilst Takeshi made the only par on hole 7. These two holes playing the most difficult on the day.

In the 2s competition, Tom McCarthy & Jimmee Little shared the division 2 pot but none of the low handicappers managed a 2 in division 1.

Important Note:

1. In future, prizes not collected for podium places and 2s competition by the Monthly Medal will be forfeit and added to the monthly medal prizes!

2. Caddies must not mark cards and triangles, circles, rectangles etc. are not to be scribbled on the scorecard. The committee do not require a geometry lesson thank you!

3. A reminder in golf etiquette appears necessary regards slow play. Players must keep up with the group in front and let the group behind thro if they lose a hole and subsequently hold up the rest of the field.

Jacks turn up trumps

IPGC golf at the Caddy Shack

Father and son Brian (left) and Philip Jacks came up trumps during their rounds with the Caddy Shack.

Tuesday July 19 had the guys travel the short distance to local Siam Country Club for a medal competition, the large field was divided into two divisions with the cut at 16 & under. The coarse was virtually empty and we were allowed to use the first & tenth tees. In div. 2 Rob Heath shot net 74 behind John Harney with 73 first place was taken by Clark Alexander level par 72 off of his new handicap well done Clark. Div. 1 had Bob Philp level par 72 trailing behind J.J. Harney on 69 but the round of the day was shot by Brian Jacks for his superb 68 net.

This is the first time the superstar champion has won an individual golf competition outright. The two’s were shared between Emmet White & J.J. and Aussie Bob one with two two’s. The bananas were taken again by Angus the horse for the umpteenth time, we are thinking of getting him some custard powder to go with them. The lucky winner of the free draw for Sunday lunch went to Les Hall.

Thursday the 21st saw the lads travel to the Navy course at Sattahip for a stableford competition on the South & East lay out today was a holiday but a very favourable green fee with a slight breeze and overcast skies made perfect golfing conditions. Div. 1 had Mark Joshua in third place with 32 points and Brian Jacks 33 in second, first place went to Mike Allidi 35 off of his 2 handicap. Div. 2 scores were exceptional with Glyn Evans shooting level par Les Hall coming home with 38 points but way out in front was young Philip Jacks who amassed a staggering 44 points it must be pointed out that young Phil is having lessons and this round was not completely unexpected. Look forward to the handicap reduction Philip. What a week for the Jacks. The two’s were shared by Philip & Clark Alexander. The bananas were awarded to Mike Allidi handicap 2 for his temporary loss of temper with his golf clubs when he fluffed two pitches from 25 yards to record a double bogey. The lucky draw winner was won once again by Scottish superstar Angus the horse. All are welcome at the Caddy Shack which is situated on Soi 17 south Pattaya on the same road as the Harley bar so just turn up before 11 a.m. or telephone Mr Loy on 07 141 4702. Transport can be arranged.

Richard Garland delivers the supreme

IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday July 17, Green Valley
White Tees, Stableford

1st A Flight: Mark Wood, 40 pts
2nd A Flight: Jay Nakagawa, 39 pts
3rd A Flight: Brian Holden, 39 pts
1st B Flight: Mike Seely, 39 pts
2nd B Flight: Jan Eriksen, 37 pts
3rd B Flight: Glen Perkinson, 37 pts
1st C Flight: Eddy Beilby, 39 pts
2nd C Flight: Mike Craighead, 39 pts
3rd C Flight: Loz Shaw, 38 pts
Near Pin: #13 Keith Meehan; #16 “Woody” Sherwood

The Man of the Match was none other than Mark ‘Brenton” Wood who outraced a host of 39s with his award winning, and first place in the premier Flight, 40 points. It should be noted that such a point total by Mark belies a gross 75! As suggested, right on Mark’s well rounded heals, were Jay Nakagawa-San and Brian “Know When to” Holden with their twin 39’s. The esteemed gentlemen from Sapporo edged the Wake Forest Deacon on count back.

This article is going to sound like a Richard Livingston pitch, but his results show that he is well deserving of it, as one of his students, of admitted potential, Mike Seely captured his first Society win with 39 points in the interim Fight. The quiet and steady Jan Eriksen, and a guy I understand we are going to start seeing more of in Pattaya, Glen Perkinson, followed Mike up the steps with 37 points apiece. A count back sorted out their order of ascent.

Eddy Beilby has come off the rigs and into the pay line in short order. He bettered The Mechanic on count back to take it all in the junior Flight, whilst Loz Shaw started to give indications that improvement in ahead.

Tuesday July 19, Laem Chabang, A & B
Blue or White Tees, Stroke/Medal

1st Blue Flight: Phil Mitchell, net 69
2nd Blue Flight: Mark Wood, net 74
3rd Blue Flight: Barry Copestake, net 75
1st White Flight: Richard Garland, net 63
2nd White Flight: Eddy Beilby, net 68
3rd White Flight: Dene Airey, net 71

It had been noted that Richard Garland, again under the esteemed tutelage of local teaching pro

Richard Livingston was making inroads on his well seasoned 12-13 handicap. In fact, he had lowered it to 10 in the last handful of months. Not bad progress for the king of Sunshine State Pizza, and bon vivant of Costa Rica and Pattaya. Well forget the quiet progress of the past, ‘cause Richard just threw a gross 73 at it, good for a net 63! In what was the first of two victories on the week for one of the nicest guys around to play golf with. (That notwithstanding, Shakey Pete still don’t like him.) Poor Eddy Beilby, also off the white tees with Richard, looked like so much chopped liver when claiming second in the White Flight by shooting an otherwise very commendable net 68. Dene Airey who was to play a role in another colossal effort at week’s end rounded out the shorter Flight.

Further lost in all of this was Phil Mitchell’s net 69 on the demanding Mountain and Lake Blues. Phil’s gross 74, net 69, provided a 5 shot margin over Sunday’s MoM, Mark Wood. Mark was followed up the podium by Barry Copestake, whose third place net 75 evidenced the challenge of the Blue setup.

Wednesday July 20, Burapha, B & D
White Tees, Stableford

1st Flight Richard Garland, 37 pts
2nd Flight Ken Kutzing, 37 pts
3rd Flight John Emmerson, 36 pts

With the whole lot taking a rest day off the whites on the unusual couplet of the British Links and Dune nines, this week’s title boy was there again, this time by count back over a chagrined Kenny K4 Kutzing. King Richard and K4 were joined on the podium by the old Silver Back himself, Johnny E.

Friday July 22

2 man Scramble|, Stroke/Medal

1st Dene Airey & “Loz” Shaw, net 54.8
2nd Roy Thornton & Glynn Nicholas, net 60.0
3rd George Jackson & Jez Lees, net 60.1
4th Barry Copestake & Tony Hill, net 61.1

Scrambles are an odd competition. When they are going well, one is wont to quit his day job and just play, and win, scrambles. Well if you want to talk about thinks going well, try the score of two good guys who have had their struggles in individual competitions, until this week, namely Dene Airey and Loz Shaw. To say they rang it up on Friday is to put it mildly as they were just over five strokes clear of the second place team of Roy Thornton and Glynn Nicholas. One-Ball and The Principal were happy to hold the bronze. The rare fourth place trophy, awardable due to the large field that enjoyed this team event, went down to a count back between Barry Copestake and his newly arrived mate, Tony Hill, and pre-tournament favorites Joe “I’m not in the” Mooneyham and our title guy. Barry and Tony copped the prize on count back despite Joe’s and Richard’s medalist gross 69.

Thailand to host 1st International 80-80 rugby tournament

Thailand has stolen the march on the rest of the world in trialling a new international competition in rugby. Called 80-80 rugby or welterweight rugby, it is full 15 a side contact rugby played under the existing International Rugby Board Laws of the Game for U19 rugby. The only difference is that it is weight graded and all players cannot weigh more than 85 kg.

Thailand is hosting the world’s first international tournament in the week of August 6 - 14 in Phuket. Auckland Rugby Union, New South Wales Union and Japan Rugby Football Union will compete with Thailand (indeed, the tour budget for Auckland may be their biggest financial commitment other than the Super 12s, so they are serious.)

These Unions represent the “powerhouses” of Southern hemisphere rugby and of course, Japan is the leading rugby nation in Asia, being the only one to have made a World Cup. It should prove to be one of the most competitive and closely fought rugby competition between Asian Unions and Southern hemisphere unions ever.

80 - 80 rugby is not a variation of rugby (eg 7’s or 10’s or beach) but the full 15’s game where selection is based not on age but on one simple criteria, weight. With weight grade Asian teams can feasibly end up as world champion because it will be a competition based on individual skills, teamwork and technique only, without the domination of physical power that can be generated by some of the physically bigger players from Fiji and South Africa.

Weight grade rugby is not new to Australia and New Zealand, with many children developing their interest in rugby through weight grade school competitions. However, the modern driver of the competition is founded in New Zealand where there was a need to find a form of competition where the lighter players were not being overpowered by the much more “physical” style of rugby played by the physically heavier Pacific Island people. Now the game is played extensively in New Zealand (Auckland region has around 200 clubs playing the game) and is starting in Australia.

The concept is particularly appealing to Asian and African countries because these Unions can now compete. Thailand recognised this and has taken a valuable and enviable initiative, now grabbing the lead over every other union in the world.

This year is a pilot tournament, but so seriously is the International Rugby Board looking at the prospects of the competition, the IRB are sending both technical development managers and media representatives to study and record the tournament. Filming of the event will be seen world wide on the IRB’s weekly “Total Rugby” program.

Also taking the effort to attend, despite their demanding schedules, will be the Chairman of the Australian Rugby Union, Dilip Kumar, and the Chairman of Auckland Rugby Union, Ken Baguley.

At first there was some opposition to the concept, people considering it was yet another variation of the game and not wanting to develop a competition that might detract from Rugby World Cup. However, the concept is now seen as a means to involve more people in rugby and to assist in further internationalising the game. Imagine the interest if Thailand were to end up in the top 4 nations in the world, and with weight grade, there is no reason why that could not be.

It is early days yet, but the concept has also received enthusiastic support from a number of African unions, and it can be expected that European Unions will join the competition next year.

Soi 6 Quiz League

DSL Pattaya 9 Ball Pool League

PSC Golf from the Three Sisters Bar

On the July 18 a number golfers arrived for Monday Golf. Doug Douglas again had a fantastic day as he headed for the top spot after winning last week. Doug was tied with John King at 40 points each at the end of the day. As it was, our handicap secretary was on the scene with the new listing and “lo and behold” the axe had fallen and Doug’s handicap was no more. It turned out that Doug’s handicap was cut by three strokes and it shot him out of the saddle and put John King in first place.

Winner John Hall (right), and avid holder of the bag Rollie Weese (left).

Trailing John King at three strokes back were a slew of golfers. (five to be exact). Tied for the second position were Doug Douglas, L. Andre. Ken Mau, Herb Ishinaga, and Graham Ramsay. All had 37 points but could not muster the necessary points to match the leader.

The mainstays, Tully and Rollie Weese, again battled it out for the cellar position. I guess they are a little reluctant to be holding the bag most of the time and would like to pass it along. A number of times it was passed along but not enough. As I explained to Rollie, be proud to be there whether you win or lose. I am proud of all the older golfers that golf with us. They are an inspiration to the rest of us just being there. I wish that I’ll be able to be alive at their age let alone be on a golf course swinging a club. Keep it up guys and don’t worry about losing or winning - just enjoy everyday. Just think about how many people that can’t do what we are doing and thank the Lord that we get another day on the course.

Tony and Doug tame Khao Kheow

PSC golf off the Grapevine

Thursday, July 21 saw 25 golfers travel to Khao Kheow to play the A & B courses off the yellow tees. The course was in its usual top condition and provided a good test of golf for both A & B flights.

Front row (l-r) Mike, Alan, Joel, and Colin. Back row: Da and Lek.

Tony Oakes playing off his new handicap of 11 returned a very creditable 39 points to win the A Flight while Jeff Wylie got the runner-up prize with 35 points off 4. In the B Flight, Doug Chalkley had 36 points with Rich Murphy getting the runner up prize with 31 points.

The long putts were won by Joel and Bob, who each also won a near pin prize. Other near pins were won by newcomer Kevin Wilson, Vincent Smyth, Paul Sharples, and Tom Herrington. Lucky draws were won by Mike Wing & Colin Cronin, which just goes to show that good golf and prize winning are not mutually exclusive.

All golfers commented on the great day they had at the great golfing venue, followed by some good tucker provided by our hosts, Malcolm & Opal. If you would like to join The Grapevine on a Thursday, come on down and sign up with us. We’re on Soi Regent Marina (or Soi ‘0’) off Beach Road, or call 038 361 736. Cheers & good golfing. (JW)

The Beautiful Game?: Bolton’s Thai takeaway

Riz Taylor

The Premiership’s maiden visit to Thailand ended in victory for Bolton Wanderers last week, as the Trotters scooped the Premier League Asia Trophy in Bangkok. A second-half penalty from El-Hadji Diouf was enough to secure a win over the Thai under-23 team in the final played at the Rajamangala Stadium.

The win represents Sam Allardyce’s first trophy as Wanderers’ manager, but it didn’t come easily as the Thailand under-23 team, buoyed by their victory over Everton on penalties in the semi-final, more than matched Bolton for effort and were unlucky not to score. Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen’s outstanding stop from a swerving Pitchipong free-kick was the pick of the efforts from a Thai team that gave Wanderers plenty of defensive headaches during the match.

“I felt in both games we adapted to the conditions extremely well. Today the Thai side were very sharp and technically very good,” said Allardyce after his side’s win. Thai coach Charnwit Tolcheewin said that the tournament had offered his team useful experience. “We have learned a lot from those two teams. Maybe next year we’ll invite other teams to play,” he said.

Place your bets for the sack race!

Who’d be the manager of a football club? You spend ten months of the year babysitting a bunch of overgrown children who earn considerably more than you do, and that’s just for starters. Long trips away from the family looking at potential signings, negotiating contracts, informing heartbroken young footballers that they’re not good enough and dealing with a media desperate for new stories are all integral parts in the role of the modern coach. Summer holidays? Almost non-existent. I’m sure you won’t be seeing Steve McLaren lounging around a Soi 7 bar playing Connect Four at any stage during the summer break.

At a time when things should be all about relaxing and recharging the batteries after a hard season in the pressure-cooker world of football, there is also the final insult - having to put up with speculation from the press and the betting world on your demise.

Welcome to the Premiership Sack Race.

If anyone fancies a flutter (on the internet, of course), here are the latest odds for the first manager to depart this season. The standout favourite to be clearing his desk is Newcastle’s Graeme Souness at 5-1, followed by a chasing pack of Chris Coleman of Fulham, Alan Pardew of West Ham, Charlton’s Alan Curbishley and recent Portsmouth appointment Alain Perrin, all at 8-1. Paul Jewell, Mick McCarthy and Bryan Robson are offered at a tempting 12-1, while the pick of the outside bets include Spurs’ Martin Jol at 20-1 and Stuart Pearce at 25s.

Given the pressures on these men and the difficulties they face, I think that betting on someone to lose their job is a despicable thing to do. However with those odds it would be madness to pass up on Alan Pardew, and I’m wading in with a few baht on the not-so-popular Hammers’ and ex-Reading boss.

Good news for Asian football or good news for debt-ridden Manchester United? That’s was the question after Sir Alex Ferguson decided to hand Chinese hopeful Dong Fangzhuo his full debut for the club that somewhat coincidentally comes on United’s current tour of Asia.

The Chinese market is seen as a cash bonanza for the world’s biggest clubs who hope to benefit from the huge interest in the world’s most populous country. Dong, a January signing for United, has spent time at Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp to prepare for an application for a British work-permit.

“...In that time he was with us in Belgium - and he has spent some time with us at the training ground - we hope to see that development and give him a good career in the game,” said Sir Alex. “He’s a very enthusiastic boy. He’s very quick, strong, athletic and I think he’s got the material to do well.”

Cynics will point to the shameless exploitation of the Chinese and Asian market by United, who have opened several ‘Megastores’ across the continent, but “King” Dong seemed unruffled by the fuss, getting on the score sheet as the Red Devils overcame a determined Hong Kong outfit by two goals to nil.

United travel to the Chinese capital Beijing to face Beijing Hyundai, who almost secured an upset over Real Madrid last week before goals from Raul, Guti and Luis Figo saw Real edge the match 3-2. Thanks to pouring rain, high prices for tickets and a missing David Beckham who was nursing an injury, only 40,000 fans turned up to watch.

Naughty Romans face shopping ban

Still getting over the fact that nobody likes their system of numerals, overly straight roads and their shameful treatment of Russell Crowe in ‘Gladiator’, the Romans have now been told that their ban on player purchases will remain in place.

Well, AS Roma that is, who along with SS Lazio make up the Italian capital’s two major football teams. Handed the ban by FIFA last year after signing Auxerre defender Phillipe Mexes before the player’s contract had expired, Roma’s recent appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport has seen the terms upheld, meaning the club cannot bring in any new faces before at least January of next year.

Latest Transfer Gossip

Chelsea continue to chase Lyon’s Michael Essien as they seek to capture every midfielder in Europe, and up in Scotland Rangers target Sotirios Kyrgiakos has rejected the Glasgow club’s latest contract offer. Looking for a dressing-room troublemaker to fill Craig Bellamy’s boots, Newcastle are after ex-Real Madrid and Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka, but have been told they must improve on both their 6 million pound bid to secure the Frenchman’s services. Shaka Hislop’s search for a club has ended at Crystal Palace, whilst fellow goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has been snapped up by Portsmouth.

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar

Tuesday July 17
Burapha
Stableford

Early morning at Bert’s is a casual affair, as hangovers are put away for the day, and the loins girded for another day in paradise. Of course one cannot forget black coffee to help, and a fine English breakfast. The Brit’s have given the world so many things, but Brekkers is best, and free at Bert’s on these days.

Derek Brook (left) and Bert (center) showing Bob Noble how he did it.

Burapha put on its best face for us, just having hosted a 4 day professional tournament, and the B & D courses were a pleasure to play. Fine tailored fairways and greens at their fastest and trickiest. A fine day out on a super course. Even a stiff breeze and a sticky day did not spoil it.

Back at Bert’s, macaroni cheese was waiting, to put a lining on the stomach before a few cold ones. Bob was back, now this was unfortunate as when the results were read out, and there were two fine scores, he beat the scribe on countback. Sometimes he can be a pain in the !!!, he even won three technical prizes, still such is life. T.T.F.N.

Winner: Bob Noble, Runner-up Derek Brook

Near Pins: Mike Wing, Bill Knight, Bob Noble, Keith Avery, Keith Hodges (2)

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

I would bet my last baht that those that were born and live in the Land of Smiles were over the moon a couple of weeks ago when Thailand’s own Tiger Woods won “The Open”. Knowing locals there is no doubt that Thai mothers were out the next day trying to find a black American Army Sgt. for their daughters to marry and produce the next Tiger. Heck that must be the secret. Worked once could work again. Lost in the Woods win was the fact that a Thai lad made the cut in the Open. First time. Got the following. “Now forgetting birthdays is one thing what about the first Thai To make the cut at the British Open Thongchai Jaidee. Try that name after half a dozen MGD’S!” Scotty is spot on but then he usually is. Continuing with folks from the Land of Kilts and nervous sheep...

The king of the Second Road and soon to be king of the British boxing lightweights “Dapper” Dave Stewart of Scotland got his record to 15-0 when he out-pointed Anthony Mezaache (6-2-1) a week ago. The Frog, that would be Mezaache, bit the dust when Stewart earned a 79-73 decision over 8 stanzas. “Yes, I know another cheese eating, wine swilling surrender monkey bites the dust.” Mezaache, to be fair, is probably better than the record of 6-2-1 indicates as he was a former “kick boxing champion.” Next for the fast rising Scot will be a British title eliminator, how about calling the match “Camilla Parker Bowles.” She was a title eliminator. Yes I have been into the cooking sherry.

As I suspected the defeated of Bernard Hopkins by Jermane Taylor should have been a one or two day story. As the fight was shown in the UK got a note from UK reader Dave Whitcomb. Some darters may be familiar with the name as he was a champion in the late 80s and early 90s before retiring from the sport. He’s now back on the tungsten trail and still a boxing fan. He opines, “Howie, watched both fights last night - Hopkins/Taylor and McCullough-Larios and your comments were spot on. Another champion called Taylor, Jeesssss that’s all we need! Dave, “ As his e-mail was written darter par excellence Phil Taylor was on his way to another world championship in Blackpool. Just think, “all those tailors and Wil’s on Soi 6 is still the best. He dresses the stars of The Square Ring”.

With Hopkins acting like the “North end of a southbound horse”, to no ones surprise, the boxing press is acting in unison as willing accomplices. “No , no not I”. They’re riding on their high horses and asking the Nevada Athletic Commission to investigate how judge Duane Ford could have called the 12th round for Taylor. That would have given Hopkins a draw and he would have retained his title. I on the other hand standing alone want to ask judge Jerry Roth how in all that’s holy he could give Hopkins rounds 3 and 5 when the rest of the civilized world, including The Square Ring, gave it to Taylor? The answer? That’s how he saw the fight. End of story, well almost. Hopkins being the ass he is asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission to overturn the decision. When they stopped laughing he was told to “Bugger off.” “For the final words we go to O.R. Cross of the O.R. Cross’s of Pattaya. “I thought Taylor beat him and I think he will do it more decisively next time. Whenever good young is up against good old I’ll take good young. Unless it’s good old farangs up against good young Thai ladies in the Boudoir.” Me thinks he’s got the Taylor-Hopkins fight about right. Me thinks he’s dreaming and went to Happy Hour at the TQ a bit early on the “deal in the Boudoir.”

I was also set to report about the big time catfight between Lucia Rijker and Christy Martin. I typed almost. Now don’t have to. Rijker fans have longed been disappointed that she hasn’t been more active in the ring. Many rumors swirled around that she was taking “juice” which prevented her from taking and passing a test for steroids. “On no not a swirling rumor we’ll all be killed.” Well she again has been hit by the injury bug this time a torn Achilles tendon which caused her to go under the knife last week. That means the big payday scheduled for July 30 in Las Vegas is gone. Boo hoo, boo hoo. The bright side for Rijker is that should she wish to take up baseball she would probably hit 50 homers a year.

Former WBC super middleweight interim champion Danny Green (20-2) following his second loss to Markus Beyer (31-2) made some wholesale changes on his team. Rather than being trained by Jeff Fenech in came Thailand-based Cuban Ismael Salas. Fenech you might remember decided that it would be best for his career to train Mike Tyson. Great career move Jeff. According to new reports Tyson is looking a getting into a new business. “Controversial boxer Mike Tyson declared in a recent interview that he’s thinking of going into adult movie business, “I’ve talked to some people, I just talked to a gentleman named Jimmy, whose involved with Club Jenna, you know Jenna Jameson,” said Tyson. “They said they were interested in getting me involved in that.” Love to see the training camp for that one. Back to boxing.

Now Green’s added Parramatta Rugby League football strength and conditioning specialist duo Craig Catterick and Hayden Knowles. All this in preparation for his “showdown” with Yank Scott Pemberton in Perth in late October. The Premberton-Green fight should be a “Kathy bar the door affair.” “Pemberton is the #1 contender in the WBC with 29 wins, 24 KO’s and three losses, he was in the ESPN fight of the year two years running against Omar Sheika - they just knocked each other senseless,” Green said. “He’s big, strong and loves to brawl, so it’s something I’m looking forward to. It’s a challenge that excites me.” I have met my challenge. Finish the column before Happy Hour at the Casa’ de Reed. What a guy?

The beautiful clubhouse at the Navy course had a fire during the night and the locker rooms and golf carts were destroyed. There was only a small group due to a public holiday and they abandoned the competition once play had finally began.

Got Wind and plenty of action...

Quantum Naga Cup 2005

Skiff style, yacht racing came alive again in Ao Chalong Bay, Phuket during the 2nd running of the Quantum Naga Cup. Held in the middle of the South West monsoon season, the four competing crews in T-shirts and shorts, racing on the home grown Phuket Sports 8 were greeted with 12 to 15 knots of SW breeze, gusting to 18kts, in warm tropical conditions. Six windward - leeward courses are scheduled over the weekend, where the winner takes home the intricately carved Naga Cup and a couple bottles of Australia’s popular Bundaberg Rum. Carrying a huge 94sqm (1010 sg ft) asymmetric spinnaker, these nippy 8m (26ft) boats can easily turn into a bit of a hand full during the gusts - as Vino and Image-Asia Attitude 8 found out.

Scott Duncanson’s Securicor Somtam Express had to settle for second spot on the podium in this year’s Quantum Naga Cup, which jump started Evason Phuket Race Week 2005. (file photo)

Boat trim, balance, good crew work and extreme hiking are of prime importance if you are contemplating success in the sports boat class. Teams that manage to consistently put all these things together, normally finish on the top of the podium. Aussie Scott Duncanson who instigated the building of the class in Phuket has led the fleet at all regional regattas. It comes as no surprise then, that at the end of the first day of racing, his team finished up with a 3-zip score line on Securicor Somtam Express. Following close in their wake is Keith Moore’s Pla Loma with 3 x 2nd places and with a little more application of the essential things above may be able to achieve the inevitable and beat Somtam. A close battle is developing between Josh Lee’s Vino by Watermark and Mark Horward’s Image-Asia Attitude 8 for the final podium position. Josh scored 2 x 3rds and one 4th place and Mark 2 x 4ths and one 3rd place to put themselves in contention before the final rounds.

All’s well that ends well...

All 4 Phuket 8 sports boats crews were out early practicing, despite many having attended Reiny’s raucous welcoming party at the Karma Lounge in Karon beach.

After discussions between Race Officers Simon James, John McLennan and the yacht skippers it was decided to shorten the courses to 1 nm legs and have quick short races to keep everyone together and in with a chance.

The breeze had dropped slightly to 10-15 kts in the gusts from day 1, but the sun was out in full glory, which was great for the photographers. The crew’s keenness was shown by the close starts, changing positions throughout the race and finishing order.

Scott Duncanson’s Securicor Somtam Express crew did not have it all their own way this time, as they had to climb back through the fleet from a fouled spinnaker launch in race 5 and Keith Moore’s Pla Loma led the way home on the final race that had a small passing rain storm. No problems here though, as in the warm tropics, they were dry by the time they reached the leeward mark.

Handling these skiff like planning racing yachts with a huge sail area, that were built for sheer speed and complete disregard for any handicap measurement rules, can some times be a hand full.

Over trimming the big 94sqm (1010 sg ft) asymmetric spinnaker in 15 -18 knot gusts can be disastrous (As Mark Horwards Image-Asia Attitude 8 has shown us on many occasions) and cause a yacht not only, to loose a race but finish up well down the pecking order for bragging rights, at the end of a day!

The teams that quickly got their boat trim and balancing act together, plus consistently performed extreme feats of hiking are usually rewarded with podium positions in the one design racing classes. Scott Duncanson’s, well oiled team Securicor Somtam Express crew falls into this category and marched away with the Quantum Naga Trophy for the second year in succession.

After a close battle Keith Moore’s Pla Loma took only one race from Somtam this year and had to settle for 2nd place on the podium.

The juggling act to stay upright and introduce new sailors to this exciting form of racing was won by Josh Lee’s Vino by Watermark who tussled with Mark Horward’s Image-Asia Attitude 8 all around the course on both days, to end up 3rd and 4th overall respectively. (www.asianyachting.com)

A look back at this year’s Pattaya Marathon

This year’s Pattaya marathon has proved to be one of turmoil and confusion. However, despite the mishaps and organizational failures, the event is still one of the highest profile sporting competitions for Pattaya.

The results of the confusion will still be felt. But on the whole the event proved to be successful with more athletes competing in more classes then previous years. And, as always Pattaya City turns on the charm to welcome athletes from around the nation and the globe who visit the city to partake in the event.

This year, there plenty of new faces and many familiar ones so enjoy our brief pictorial and race results.
