Traditional Nordic Christmas
Nordic and Thais join the
celebration of the start of the Christmas season.
The Nordic Society of the Eastern Seaboard celebrated its
traditional Christmas Party on Saturday 21 December with participants from as
far as Bangkok to Rayong and Map Ta Phut, as well as members coming all the way
from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
More than 60 people from the Nordic countries (i.e. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and
Finland) celebrated the start of the Christmas season at Restaurant
Scandinavia’s Food and Fun section in the central area of Beach Road.
The traditional and delicious “Koldtbord” was prepared by the chef Erik Sorensen
and his staff to the taste of all the Nordic countries. It was here that we were
all able to connect with Christmas, except for the snow. But when the
participants got the latest news from Norway that more than 40 centimetres of
snow had fallen within 24 hours the day before, I think that most of the people
felt every happy to be in Pattaya and that we were able to enjoy the food under
the green palm tress and with blue sky and children swimming in the sea opposite
Beach Road.
After the expanding of Laem Chabang and the Rayong area with all its oil-related
industry, the amount of Nordic citizens working in this area is raised to a high
level. The Nordic countries are well known for their competence in the deep-sea
drilling as well as the last decades development of oil-related industry. And
the famous Nordic seaman is well known all around the world.
This wonderful Saturday evening we all met and enjoyed the fabulous food and the
long lasting friendship between the different Nordic countries.
In the end of the evening a lucky draw was held with first prize being a
EuroClass round trip air ticket to Singapore donated by SAS, Scandinavian
Airlines System. The ;lucky winner was Ake Adamsson of Sweden. Second prize, a
dinner for two at Restaurant Scandinavia’s Food & Fun section, was won by the
Norwegian, Steinar Andersen, the manager of Marina Inn Plaza.

P.I.L.C. Choir performs at prison
The Pattaya International
Ladies Club Choir performed Christmas carols and skits for inmates at the
Lad Yao Prison.
The multinational choir of the Pattaya International
Ladies Club, under the direction of Jenny Garcia, got the chance to visit
Lad Yao, one of the largest women’s prisons in Thailand on Saturday,
December 21. The prison has an inmate population of 2,000.
The choir was invited to sing Christmas carols as part of the Christmas
party organised by the Thailand Baptist Churches Association, represented by
Acharn Soonthorn and Sue Kawli, with other dedicated members of the
association. It was the first time that an outside group of this size was
allowed to perform in front of the women prisoners. The inmates are from all
over the world, and in recognition of their home countries, some of the
women prepared Christmas musicals and one act performances that were
representative of their various countries. Their fellowship prisoners and
the visitors were impressed with the preparation and effort exhibited by the
women.
The whole event was a big success and an emotional experience for everyone.
The choir, an on-going activity of the Pattaya International Ladies Club, is
composed of amateurs, semi-professionals, and professionals. They are
looking forward to performing for a variety of occasions in 1997. Persons
interested in booking the group or in participating with the group should
call either Monika Rottmann at (038) 225 903, or Catherine Bond at (038) 704
297.
