The Royal Thai Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy are participating
in the SingSiam Naval Exercise through Dec. 17.
Thai Rear Adm. Ratsadang Theeranet dispatched Frigate Squadron 2 from the
Sattahip Naval Base Nov. 21 for the exercise, which began the next day.
The squadron is under the command of Capt. Weesanu Sawangwongmai. The
anti-submarine warfare group is commanded by Cmdr. Srayuth Nuteeprathum.
Ratsadang said SingSiam allows Thai forces to improve their strength and
training, including how to detect submarines, battle on the surface and
defend air attacks. It also teaches the crews to cooperate with foreign
allies.
The naval exercise, which traditionally was run every two years, resumed
this year after a three-year hiatus. The 17th in the series, SingSiam has
expanded in scope and complexity over the years. It has evolved from
conventional naval warfare exercises to exercises incorporating maritime
security scenarios.
