Gerry Roche wins his first comp
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

JP Maffray and Gerry Roche.
Sunday, Oct. 20, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st JP Maffray (10) 36pts
2nd Dave Driscoll (14) 35pts
3rd Kevin McEntee (6) 35pts
4th Bob StAubin (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Roche (20) 43pts
2nd Tony Pieroni (17) 43pts
3rd Don Lehmer (20) 41pts
4th Maurice Byrne (18) 40pts
Near Pins: No 4 Ernie McEnrine, No 9 Ed Wyckoff, No 12 Nigel
Flanagan, No 16 Mick Beresford.
B Flight was the story of the day as Gerry Roche scored his first ever win
playing out of Lewiinski’s, not that anybody doubted he would. Gerry, who
hails from Harts Town, Dublin and is a member of Killeen G.C. in Ireland,
started to build a formidable bid for the title slot with an excellent 43
points, a score he shared with Tony Pieroni. Gerry received his first gold
finish thanks to a count back as the luck of the Irish prevailed.
Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer and Maurice Byrne both walked off the 18th green
thinking that they were in with a shout, Don with 41 points and Maurice with
40, and most days they would have been in contention but they just picked
the wrong day. Maurice did however benefit from the extra 4th place.
There was less dramatics in the A Flight where they can actually play the
game as JP Maffray took the top spot with an even par round. JP was followed
by a triumvirate of players on 35 points as Big Dave Driscoll took the
silver, Kevin ‘you know who’ the bronze and Bob StAubin the lead, which as
he nearly always does he donated to the Bann Jing Jai orphanage. (Big thanks
from the kids Bob). The unlucky Ed Wyckoff received only a “bad luck pal”
from his mates but he did have a 2, unfortunately for him so did six other
players.
Tuesday, Oct. 22, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Adrian O’Sullivan (11) 34pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (6) 34pts
3rd Craig Tees (8) 31pts
B Flight
1st Terry Mangan (15) 32pts
2nd Matt Cronin (15) 32pts
3rd Matt Doyle (12) 31pts
C Flight
1st Per Forsberg (18) 39pts
2nd Christy Knight (20) 33pts
3rd David Kirkstuik (18) 33pts
Per Forsberg left little question about who was man of the match as he
bolted through the pack with his C Flight winning 39 points that was the
best score by five shots on the day. Per was six clear of his C Flight mates
Irishman Christy ‘good’ Knight and David Kirkstuik. Christy was laughing all
the way to the silver as David had to settle for the bronze.
In B or the ‘Irish Flight’, Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and good friend Matt
Cronin vied for the top spot, both locked on 32 points, but the scales of
justice tilted in Terry’s favour. Matt ‘Dillon’ Doyle from the “Offaly mob”
tided up the flight a stroke adrift.
Skipping up to the premier flight we saw Adrian O’Sullivan and Kevin ‘you
know who’ square up in a mortal combat and when the divots had settled it
was Kevin who took it on the chin for the second count back loss on the
trot. Craig Tees rounded out the flight with 31 points.
Per Forsberg added to his fine win with a double share of the 2’s pot along
with five other players.
Thursday, Oct. 24, Burapha C & D - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (6) 38pts
2nd Craig Tees (8) 37pts
3rd Peter Hynard (13) 32pts
B Flight
1st Maurice Byrne (18) 38pts
2nd Max Bracegirdle (25) 36pts
3rd Geoff Bracegirdle (21) 35pts
The day started out with a bit of a hiccup as the capable golf staff booking
at Burapha went awry, which led to an hour or so delay in the tee off time
but after a gentle brushing with a wire brush the golf staff recovered.
Two players who were least affected with the delay, A Flight’s Kevin ‘you
know who’ and B Flight’s Maurice Byrne who were co-men of the match with
best on the day 38 points each. This was Kevin’s first win of the week,
coupled with a second and third place earlier in the week. He was one clear
of the inform Craig Tees and a further shot clear of ‘fluent in Thai’ Peter
Hynard.
Following Maurice up the podium steps were the Aussie Bracegirdle boys, Max
with a fine even par round, and Geoff a shot back.
Peter Hynard, Maurice Byrne, Liam McGuiness, Espen Kristofferson and Peter
Henshaw shared the 2’s pot.
There was a further hiccup to the day as stand-in bus driver for the day
Aussie Lou Zigzag lost the keys to the bus resulting in a midnight
presentation at Lewiinski’s.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Allidi shows champion’s credentials at PSC monthly tournament

Low gross champion Mike Allidi.
Report by Nigel Cannon/ Photos by William
Macey.
Friday, Oct. 25, Treasure Hill G.C.
With all the rain that has fallen in Pattaya and surrounding areas recently it
was, perhaps, a surprise that the 92 competitors in October’s monthly tournament
had a rain free day on this challenging course. The weather was cool, by
Thailand standards, and a slight breeze made it great for golf. The course was
presented in good condition and the management saw to it that we had the course
exclusively to ourselves, which saw most rounds completed in just over 4 hours.
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon arrived early to
prepare for registration and place the appropriate markers on the course and to
find staff and caddies ready for our day. With some last minute adjustments to
the starting sheets all were away on time at the 1st and 10th tees.
Treasure Hill has a reputation as a tough track, however, there were some good
scores in all flights. The current PSC Club Champion Mike Allidi (2) showed his
championship qualities with a superb 72 gross to take the low gross prize.
In ‘A’ Flight – playing stroke play - it was good to welcome back Kari Kuparinen
(6) who was in top spot with 71 net. Meanwhile it was the ‘old warrior’ Ted
Morris (14) with the best Stableford score of the day with 40 points to take ‘B’
Flight. 37 points from Michael Jefferys (18) and 39 from Joel Flor (24) were
enough to secure first place in ‘C’ and ‘D’ Flights respectively.

Chura Srinual (left) was the winner
of the Ladies Flight.
With just a few ladies playing today it was the smiling new face of Chura
Srinual (34) who returned the best score of 29 in the Ladies Flight.
This month’s presentation was at Lewiinski’s where Colin and his team provided a
mouthwatering buffet to cater for all tastes and diets! As is usual, the
‘Lewiinski’s Lovelies’ were on hand to deal with drink orders.
Presentation time and Nigel called order and welcomed all and expressed
appreciation to Colin and his team and introduced Golf Chairman Joe. He
expressed his appreciation to the day’s competitors and gave details of upcoming
PSC golfing events for the next few months. He also announced that PSC were
providing marshals for the PGA tournament at Amata Springs on December 12th –
15th. There are still some vacancies for this roll and full details are in the
Clubhouse and on the PSC website for all those interested in this great
opportunity.
Then it was back to Nigel who announced the winners and Joe presented the
prizes. The lucky draw followed then it was goodnight from Nigel, who reminded
all that the PSC Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday 11th December at the
Town in Town Hotel.

Flight.

Regular competitor and B Flight
winner, Ted Morris.

Lewiinski’s stalwarts - Jim and
Colin, both in the frame.

Santa Claus returns - welcome back
Rick.

Rosco records a perfect finish at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Rosco celebrates his Ace with
(seated left) Shane and Anton and (seated right) Steve Poznanski.
Monday, Oct. 21, Burapha - Stableford
Even though it continued to rain in Pattaya, a great field of 45 players
enjoyed an overcast but fine day on Burapha A and B nines from the white
tees. Which tees we play from is often a subject of discussion but as soon
as the course dries out we shall return to the blues on A & B, maybe not
every time but certainly equally so with the whites.
With the field being bolstered by some of the Aussies from the Chiang Mai
trip and another six from Melbourne, we had first to fourth in three
divisions.
The day, however, belonged to Rosco Langoulant, who finished “eagle, eagle”
on B8 & B9 for a two hole score of 9pts. His perfect 6-iron took one bounce
into the hole on the par 3 eighth on B for a “hole in one”, then he sank a
10ft putt on B9 for an eagle - odds of some 33,000 to 1 so we have been
reliably been advised. Well done Roscoe and thanks for the bell ring back at
the Outback!
Andy Makara had an easy win in Div 3 with 39pts, from Shane Crane (34),
Clint Pingree (33) and Greg Hill on 32. In spite of Rosco’s 9pt two hole
haul it wasn’t enough for him to win his division as Div B was won by Pete
Stonebridge on 39pts, from the big ‘R’ with 37. Stephen Blazanyik (36) was
third and John Greenhaigh (33) fourth, beating his mate Bruce Milner on c/b.
Steve Poznanski won the premier division with the day’s top score of 40pts,
beating Steve Mann on 36, who beat Chris Fry on c/b. Andre Coetzee was
fourth on 34pts, beating two others on c/b with the same score.
The seven players who had ‘2’s all missed out as Rosco scooped the pool with
his Ace.
Div A (0-12)
1st Steve Poznanski (12) 40pts
2nd Stephen Mann (10) 36pts
3rd Chris Fry (6) 36pts
4th Andre Coetzee (6) 34pts
Div B (13-17)
1st Pete Stonebridge (16) 39pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (13) 37pts
3rd Stephen Blazsanyik (17) 35pts
4th John Greenhalgh (13) 33pts
Div C (18+)
1st Andy Makara (25) 39pts
2nd Shane Crane (22) 34pts
3rd Clint Pingree (30) 33pts
4th Greg Hill (19) 32pts
Wednesday, Oct. 23, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Today was Chulalongkorn Day, a Thai National Holiday
but we were offered such an attractive rate by Khao Kheow we decided to give
it whirl. 21 players turned up for a slightly delayed start, most of whom
were expecting soggy fairways and rain. Well just how wrong could they have
been, the weather was the best we’ve seen in weeks, blue sky and brilliant
sunshine and the course was generally dry, using the 90 deg rule for the
carts.

(From left) Sel Wegner, Peter
LeNoury, Steve Mann and Greg Hill.
We played C & B, in that order but by the
time the last group reached the green on the fourth hole, news was reaching
of us of an incident concerning one of the Outback groups in front. Clint
Pingree, one of our regular visitors, who had just arrived from the US with
his brother-in-law, Chris Thompson, had collapsed on the fifth green.
Playing in the group behind were Murray Hart & Steve Mann, both of whom have
First Aid training and realising something was wrong they rushed to Clint’s
assistance with CPR and mouth to mouth until the emergency services arrived
about 15 minutes later when they took over. Shortly after that more help
arrived including two ambulances from Sriracha and Clint was whisked off to
hospital where we later learned that he did not regain consciousness and
sadly died, from what we understand was a heart attack.
Jack spoke to Chris about continuing on with the golf and it was agreed that
would have been what Clint would have wanted.
It’s been a couple of months since we’ve seen the brace of Bracegirdles,
Geoff & Max, but they hit us with a vengeance today; Geoff winning Div A
with the day’s top score of 42pts and Max taking Div B with 35pts and not
satisfied with that, they also both got ‘2’s. Welcome back to both of you
and well done! And thanks for ringing the bell back at the bar.
There were four ‘2’s from Don Anderson, Geoff Bracegirdle & Andy Makara (all
on B8) and Max Bracegirdle on C3.
Div A (0-21)
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (21) 42pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (14) 38pts
3rd John Lawton (20) 34pts
4th John O’Keefe (14) 33pts
Div B (22+)
1st Max Bracegirdle (25) 35pts
2nd Andy Whitton (28) 33pts
3rd Shane Crane (22) 30pts
4th Barney Clarkson (23) 29pts
Friday, Oct. 25, Green Valley – Stableford
What a glorious day it was for the 34 Outbackers who
played at Green Valley today, with blue skies overhead and the sun at last,
smiling down at us (where have you been?)
We had one no-show but another person turned up so there were no major
hiccups. When we checked in at reception we were handed a notice to say that
they are planning to decrease the interval between the tee times (which used
to be seven minutes) down to six minutes due to the increased demand for
tee-times. This should no problem for the Outbackers as I recorded every
group and we were off every five minutes. So well done everyone.
The course was slightly soggy underfoot so we had ‘lift, clean and place’ on
the fairways but in another couple of weeks it is expected to be back to
normal. They had also sanded the greens, giving the illusion that they were
very slow but that wasn’t the case, which some of us found out.
Congratulations to husband John, for walking the complete 18 holes as he
normally takes a cart and welcome to Nat and Sven, both having their first
game with us.
There were familiar names at the top of all three divisions today with Sel
Wegner (Div A winner) on 37pts, the rapidly improving Greg Hill (Div B
winner) with 36pts and Andy Makara (Div C winner) with the day’s best score
of 38.
Other notables included Peter LeNoury (36), already back in the groove since
returning to Thailand a couple of days ago, Steve Mann (36), Norm Cheetham,
the lovable rogue with 35 and his travelling companion John O’Connor (35).
Finally Chris Thompson (33), who was doing so well considering the loss of
his brother-in-law Clint on Wednesday, and last but not least, Moi – who has
eventually stopped the rot with 32pts, having seen my handicap drift, nay
slide, to 26.
There were five ‘2’s from; Murray Hart (4th), Greg Hill (12th) and Rod
Crosswell, Pat Quinlivan & Chris Thompson (all on the 16th).
Div A (0-14)
1st Sel Wegner (10) 37pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (10) 36pts
3rd Stephen Mann (10) 36pts
4th Pat Quinlivan (14) 35pts
Div B (15-20)
1st Greg Hill (19) 36pts
2nd Norm Cheetham (16) 35pts
3rd John O’Connor (17) 35pts
4th Pete Stonebridge (16) 33pts
Div C (21+)
1st Andy Makara (25) 38pts
2nd Chris Thompson (26) 33pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (26) 32pts
4th Tim Knight (24) 30pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Findon flays the field
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Ted Gardner (H/cap 8) made it 3 consecutive wins with victories on the 21st
and 23rd October last week. On Monday his 41 points at Green Valley bettered
Don Hachey (19) with 38 points and Ed Horrock (20) with 35.
On Wednesday, Ted eased off a bit and won with 39 points at Eastern Star,
from Rick Culley (13) in second with 35 and Sean Soden (23) third with 30,
beating Mike Phillips on count back. Ted has also promised to speed up his
play when the ground is not so wet.
On Friday 25th I had the pleasure of playing with Ben Findon (21) as he
blitzed Green Valley with 43 points, which included ten 3-point scores. A
distant second was Phonsie McGahan (5) with 39 points and in third place was
Derek Wilkin with 37.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081
865 3104.
RIP Clint Pingree
Clint Pingree was only 52 years old and
new to the game of golf, only having taken up the sport two years ago.

Clint Pingree
Following in the footsteps of his brother-in-law, Chris, who started playing
with the Outback a year or so earlier, Clint’s first game with the Outback
was on the 31st October 2011, strangely enough at Khao Kheow, playing off a
handicap of 32 and scoring 11pts. He was however very keen to play and was
working hard to get better at the game he took up late in life.
Clint especially loved his golfing trips to Thailand and enjoyed many fun
days on the area’s golf courses with the many new friends he’d met in the
Kingdom. Returning a year later, his game had improved enough for him to
record his first tournament win in Thailand at Green Valley on 16th Nov
2012, where he shared the best score of the day with his brother-in-law,
Chris, both with 39 points – a long way from his 11pts just a year or so
earlier.
A lifelong resident of Sacramento California, Clint is survived by his
mother Eleanor and sisters, Carol & Gail.
May you rest in peace Clint!

Local charity on a mission with golf

Women With a Mission:
(left-right) Kylie Grimmer, Rosanne Diamente and Bronwyn Carey.
The Women With a Mission team has done
it again. For the fifth consecutive year they organised and ran a highly
popular and successful golf tournament, and even better, managed to get
through the entire day without rain on the immaculate Phoenix Golf
Course, while black clouds and thunderstorms rolled all around them. The
gods definitely do smile on them.
Women With a Mission is a small group, comprising one American and two
Aussie Pattaya-based ladies who work tirelessly to deliver support for
marginalised needy children in Thailand. Their work with Karen children
up on the Thai-Myanmar border and severely disabled Thai children in
Rayong has provided a real difference in the lives of hundreds of
children. Even though such a small group, the tournament saw dozens of
their friends turn out to volunteer in the running and organisation on
the day.
The annual WWM tournament has become one of their major fund-raising
sources, and this year was no exception. More than one hundred golfers
turned out for a “Texas Scramble” event held on Friday 18 October. For
the moderate entry cost the golfers were provided with real value – the
green and caddy fee; a golf shirt and “goody bag”; a lunch snack;
free-flow beer and wine and a sumptuous dinner; and even more prizes
given away.

Threatening skies but the
rain held off for a great day’s golf at Pattana.
Many different organisations and business contributed to the prizes –
too many to mention, however the major sponsors, GAC Thailand, Dana
Spicer Thailand, Albatross Logistics and Titan-VNS Logistics are worth a
mention for the fact they have now been loyal sponsors of WWM for many
years.
This year’s successful tournament managed to raise THB 670,000, but all
this has to go a long way and still needs to be supplemented by other
fund-raising events and sponsors’ money. There are more than 250
children on the Thai border relying on WWM to feed, house and educate
them every day of the year. And there is the Rayong disabled facility
where they are pushing change from just a minding center to one that
provides actual remedial therapy to the children.
So all the golfers not only had a great fun day out full of great value,
but they all left knowing that in some small way they had contributed to
help children with real needs in Thailand and a great appreciation for
the hardworking ladies of WWM!
The flight winners on the day were as follows: A Flight (The Renegades)
- Glen Ebert, Alan Abernethy, Richard Hold & Simon Dutton; B Flight
(Brunel Bandits) - Glenn Martin, Jon Cooper, Paul Wilkinson & Chris
Waters; C Flight (Dana Rayong) - Khun Jerasak, Khun Peerapong, Khun
Sirichai & Khun Theerapong; and Lucky Last! (Purple Hearts) - Ann
Winfield, Wendy Nicholas, Mary Adams & Nancy Jacobs.

Many sponsors came onboard
once again to provide much needed support for the tournament and
charity.

The Purple Hearts were all
smiles despite coming in dead last.

Team Pinnacle ready to
tee-off.

Over 100 male and female
golfers turned out to support this year’s tournament.

The amazing volunteers made
sure the day ran smoothly.

The annual Women With a Mission golf
tournament, held at Phoenix Golf Club on October 19 proved to be another
unqualified success. For a full report turn to page 50.

Ben Jackson shines in the gloom
IPGC golf from The Haven
With the scribe now having returned from an enforced
holiday, recommended by the Doc, to escape from the “Forces of Darkness”
brought about by overwork and too much success, and succinctly scotching
the rumours that ranged from “Done a runner never to return” to “Gone to
take the Word to those less fortunate in far away corners of the earth”
and almost every other scurrilous and fatuous story in between, spread
by those who might or should know better. But this is Pattaya and no
more or less should be expected from the upstanding establishment.

Ben Jackson.
Suffice to say it is business as usual on the writing
front again, as it always has been at The Haven over the past couple of
weeks, even though the golf reports have not been appearing. With
firstly Trevor Schirmer running a smooth operation until he returned,
also for a rest, to Australia for a couple of months and thereafter Phil
Groves taking up the reins and ensuring that those that wished could
carry on golfing in the usual fashion out of The Haven. So much
appreciation for their efforts on everyone’s behalf is due from all
those benefitting over the past two weeks or so.
Monday, Oct. 21, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (8) 36pts
2nd Alex Charlesworth (15) 34pts
3rd Hal Hart (18) 30pts
With the weather still ominous and darkened skies and several regulars
away in the north on various alternative golfing tours, it was no
surprise to find the numbers rather diminished when the time to leave
approached, but in the event three groups took off for the always
difficult Treasure Hill layout set amongst the unspoiled countryside
without a habitable dwelling in sight around the course.
With all the rain that has fallen over the past weeks nearly all the
courses in the area are playing extremely long with virtually zero run
for the tees, and this day’s results were also affected with just the
winner playing to handicap. This was Phil Groves who added to his
longest drive with the best score to win by two from new member Alex
Charlesworth, who might have edged Phil for the win but for a mishap
during the back nine.

Alex Charlesworth.
Hal Hart in third place was the best of the rest by a considerable
margin as most of the hopefuls struggled with the conditions and
difficulty of the course.
Surprisingly the CSS stayed at 72, as they did for the rest of the week
at the other two venues, which is a sure sign that the courses are
getting back to somewhere near their proper condition after the recent
heavy weather.
There were no ‘2’s in the second division once more but Ben Jackson
cleaned out the first division rollover pot with the sole one in the
first division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcomes for new members
Alex Charlesworth together with welcome backs for Todd Pahl and Ben
Jackson.
Wednesday, Oct. 23, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Ben Jackson (15) 44pts
2nd Phil Groves (8) 38pts
3rd Willie McFarlane (28) 31pts
With many of the regulars still away, a smaller than usual number but
still sufficient to make three full groups turned up for the testing day
at the course that was designed for handicap golfers of fifteen or less.
With its undulating greens and narrow fairways mostly bordered by thick
mango trees, it always proves to be a difficult test for all but the
most skilful, even though it plays short at just under 6,300 yards from
the blue tees.

Willie McFarlane.
Ben Jackson must have been one of those 15 handicappers the course was
designed for as he knocked it round in eight under handicap to win by a
short street from Phil Groves whose added responsibilities on the
organizational side seem to be improving his playing as he was the only
other player on the same lap when the scores came to be counted. Willie
McFarlane was a further seven strokes back in third place.
As with the competition earlier in the week, the conditions proved to be
the master of the rest of the field as they straggled in well back from
the third place with some totaling less than half of the winner’s score.
As usual there were no 2’s in the second division but there were four in
the first division with Todd Pahl and Ben Jackson getting one each and
Phil Groves slotting in two.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Daniel Nowack and
welcome backs for Erik Donnestad and Paul Hartley.
Friday, Oct. 25, Crystal Bay - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (8) 39pts
2nd Mike Armstrong (15) 37pts
3rd Willie McFarlane (28) 33pts
4th Wayne Waywood (15) 33pts
5th Bob Maloney (12) 32pts
6th Alwyne Burley (16) 32pts
With many returnees from as far apart as Northern Europe and Southern
Australia as well as the North of Thailand, the numbers were almost back
to normal for the outing to the sister course of Wednesday’s event where
the conditions were much improved from the recent weeks, with at least
some semblance of run, and the scores generally were much better across
the board.
Once again Phil Groves was to be found at the top of the leader board
although he was pressed hard by Mike Armstrong and needed to finish
strongly, which he did by claiming twelve points from the last five
holes following an outward nine of one under handicap. This proved to be
just too strong for Mark to contend with and so he finally had to settle
for a good second place.
Willie McFarlane was also in evidence once more after he won a count
back over Wayne Waywood with a better 21 to 16 to claim third place and
leave Wayne in fourth.
Bob Maloney also won a count back over Alwyne Burley with a 17 to 16
result to take fifth, which consigned Alwyne to a creditable sixth
place.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Phil Groves
showed his quality again with the sole one in the first division.
Prior to the prize presentations there were welcome backs for Terry
Hodgkiss, Gaute Moen, Bob Maloney, Wayne Waywood and Mike Armstrong.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Wheeler takes victory with 42-pointer
The Billabong Bar Golf Group

Friday scramble winners:
Brian Maddox, Bruce McAdam, Owen Walkley and Neil Carter.
Wednesday, Oct. 23, Green Valley -
Stableford
We had eight groups today at Green Valley and it
was fine for the whole round. The same could not be said for when we got
back to the bar however as it thundered down for about an hour, maybe
the lake will be a real lake soon?
Welcomes went out to Norm Cheetham, Tony Pieroni, John O’Connor, Pat
Quinliven and Craig Wheeler, all over from Australia for a holiday and
some golf.
Even though carts were allowed on the fairways today, Capt Bob deemed
that ‘pick clean and place’ would be the order of the day and it was
needed in some places, where the ball landed it stayed right there.
It was nice to see some ‘2’s for a change and there were four today,
coming from Lamun Hanley, Bob Newell and Gary Ritchie (2). The scores
were also very good, with a three-way count back on 35 points seeing Jim
Bell getting the nod for fifth place. Fourth went to Neil Carter with 37
points, third to Lamun Hanley with 38, beaten on a count back by Bob (I
never win a count back) Newell, and first place went to Craig Wheeler
with a fine 42 points.
Friday, Oct. 25, Plutaluang – Scramble
The last Friday of the month and as usual we
played our scramble down at Plutauang Golf Club. The day turned out
beautiful and we played the East and South loops with eleven groups in
total.
They were a seedy looking bunch from The Courtyard as the night before
it was Geoff’s birthday and a surprise party had been arranged for him
by his lovely wife and what a night it turned out to be. It must have
affected their golf as this time there were not the winners.
There was a very big welcome to Kyle Roach (aka) Roachy playing with the
lads from the Players Lounge back from caddying all over the world we
will get that game in next time mate.

Green Valley winners
(left-right) Craig Wheeler, Lamun Hanley, Jim Bell and Bob Newell.
The course was in great condition,
although the greens were a little tough to putt on i.e. a bit slow some
of them, however they were the same for all.
In fourth place today was the team of Mark Wood, Jez Lees, Mick
Beresford and Kyle Roach with a net score of 60.9. Coming in third was
the Billabong team of Bob Philp, Darl White, Bill Marsden and Don Wilson
(we didn’t have to leave Don’s last drive to the 18th this time which
made him very happy), their score being 60.7. Second place was taken by
the Courtyard Cavaliers with a net score of 59.3, and first place went
to Brian Maddox, Bruce McAdam, Owen Walkley and Neil Carter with a score
of 58.4.
Back at the bar it was all the usual talk about the missed putts and
what could have been. The next scramble is at the same venue on the 29th
of November.
Note: The Billabong Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call Bob on 082 204 3411 if you
want to join us for a game.

Shaw thing at Riverside
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The week began for the Pattaya Golf Society on
Monday, 21st October, with a trip to the Riverside club at Bangpakong to play a
stableford event on this exquisite course, which was in magnificent condition
considering the recent storms. The fairways were firm, the greens holding, if a
little slow, and the rough short and in places difficult.
Playing from the white tees the field set off on time and found progress quick.
Sharing third place with 32 points were Mike Wilsher and Bryan Barrell, both
rarely in the frame but on this occasion their game stood up to eighteen holes
of fairly tough scrutiny. Ahead in second was the departing Gordon Angus with 35
points and the day’s only birdie ‘2’ on the testing par three fourth, and he
took to the airport a little spending money for the long wait for his homeward
flight. The winner was long hitting Aussie Brian Shaw and his 36 points was just
reward for some accurate golf and astute putting.
Mike Ensor had presented some technical prizes and the winners were Syd Harrison
and Brian Shaw whilst the Booby Bevy went to Mr Len for blowing a comfortable
round after a much needed comfort break at the halfway stage which had obviously
taken the wind out of his sails!
The week had begun well for the Soi Buakhao based group and a return of old
friends had made the day a little more special.
Soggy success for Sumner & Latham
The words “sublime” and “ridiculous” come to mind when composing this report as
the Pattaya Golf Society followed a trip to a magnificent Bangpakong Riverside
with a more lowbrow visit to Eastern Star on Wednesday, 23rd October.
Where Bangpakong was excellent in all regards the testing track in Ban Chang has
suffered badly during the recent storms and all the expertise of the greens
staff will be called upon to bring it up to standard for the imminent high
season arrivals. The fairways were soft and soggy and lined with cart tracks and
the absence of a comfortable first cut saw the rough thick and heavy with mud.
So it was remarkable that the group made any progress from the white tees as
Tony Thorne emphasised his current renaissance with a meagre 27 points for third
place. The joint winners were long hitters Peter Sumner and Wilf Latham who
managed to amass 31 points each.
Predictably there were no birdie ‘2’s and amongst those jostling for the Booby
Bevy were Dave Edwards and Mr Len, the former threatening the group’s largest
split record.
It was probably appropriate and in keeping with the day that the return to
Pattaya was hindered by Bank Holiday traffic, a heavy storm and floods in Soi
Buakhao. Hmmm, a timeout was probably in order for the rest of the field, in a
darkened room with a mug of hot cocoa for consolation!
Aussies dominant
On Friday, 25th October the Emerald golf club in Ban Chang gave its usual warm
welcome to the Pattaya Golf Society when the group called to play a stableford
competition. The course was soft in places, with uncut areas on the fairways but
with medium to quick greens which were a pleasant surprise for the golfers.
Preferred lies were in place to overcome the problem of playing from the newly
turfed areas and the day stayed dry, if very humid.
In third place was Murray Edwards with 28 points, having stuttered on the back
nine and in second with 32 points was Ken Grimes, again producing some solid
golf. The winner was the pre-round favourite Andrew Purdie and his 33 points was
enough to ensure an all-Aussie one-two-three.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the booby bevy went to the returning Dave Plaiter,
currently leading the Player of the Year list, after his front nine was as poor
as he has played all year. But don’t bet against when he has acclimatised!

Martin thinks it’s Pleasant
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Brian & Martin looking pensive.
Tuesday, Oct. 22, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Tuesday saw us visit Khao Kheow with the C & B combination being our
allotted test of the day. The weather conditions were perfect throughout the
round, clear skies with a ½ to 1 club breeze, magic! The course was not in
great shape, partly due to the excessive rains recently, but also the B
course still settling in after recent renovations.
Willem Lasonder (21) coped best with the conditions to record a modest 31
points, while Stan Rees (23) made a nice 3-pointer on the last to sign for
29 points and take second spot.
Near pins went to Stan and Neil with 2.
Thursday, Oct. 24, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday was a trip just past Khao Kheow to
Pleasant Valley, where again we had great golf weather throughout the round.
The course was in reasonable condition, although the scores were again below
par.
Martin Hayes (14) easily led the way with 33 points, which included 4
“wipes”, while Jeff Wylie (6) with a meagre 29 points was best of the rest.
Occasionally you hear critics bemoaning that near pins are only won by low
markers, well this week Brian Maddox, our highest marker of the day, was the
only winner with multiple near pins.
Friday was the PSC monthly tournament at Treasure Hill, and although SCR
representation was lower than normal it was a big congrats to Joel Flor (24)
who was close to the standout performer of the day, with a near pin, long
drive & winning his flight.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling

TR golfers tough
out a damp week
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
There I was, thinking I was being super efficient by getting the weekly
report for week ending Saturday October 19 off to press by the Friday
evening, only to find out a couple of days later that the TRGG had in
fact played a hastily arranged competition on that Saturday. So this
week’s report starts off with the results for the previous Saturday,
clear as mud I hear you say.

Jim Sykes.
Saturday, Oct. 19, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
So Saturday, the impromptu competition, was held at Mountain Shadow and
resulted in yet another closely fought result with John Sarcasmo only
just finishing ‘King of the Heap’ from Fergus Brennan and Derek
Thorogood in second and third, the latter two only being separated after
a count back.
1st John Sarcasmo (22) 37 pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (13) 36 pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (16) 36 pts
Monday, Oct. 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
Monday heralded the start of a very, very wet week. Thunder,
lightning and a deluge for a couple hours most days lead to that dreaded
golfer’s disease, plugged balls.
At Eastern Star on that Monday I had my best front nine for a year only
to be completely stymied on the 12th hole by losing my ball in the
middle of the fairway and having to return and play the shot again, only
for the wheels to completely fall off. Returning to the Clubhouse I
found I was not the only one to suffer.

Kim Scadden.
It was no surprise to find that 30 points was good enough to win the
competition, in fact the top three all finished on the same score.
1st Jim Sykes (10) 30pts
2nd Michael Maguire (19) 30pts
3rd David Booth (14) 30 pts
Tuesday, Oct. 22, Crystal Bay - Stableford
On Tuesday at Crystal Bay (B and C courses) the story was the
same, although the bad weather held off to late afternoon when the
course became waterlogged in places and made good scoring almost an
impossibility.
Derek Thorogood faired the best with Ted Senior and David Booth in close
order behind.
1st Derek Thorogold (16) 33pts
2nd Ted Senior (15) 33pts
3rd David Booth (14) 33pts
Thursday, Oct. 24, Phoenix - Stableford
Thursday and it was off to Phoenix as usual for the TRGG to
play Lakes and Mountain courses. Kim Scadden headed the field finishing
in front of Derek Thorogood and Mod Chaviraksa.
1st Kim Scadden (18) 37pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (16) 35pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on
086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your
name to the weekly lists, which are posted on the notice board.

MacDonald stays the course and takes the win
PSC golf from i-Rovers
Tuesday, Oct. 22, Green Valley (white tees) - Stableford
When you consider the amount of rain we have had over the last month, Green
Valley was in outstanding condition on this day, all things considered.
We only had a small group out today with many of our regulars either scared
off by the rain or deciding to travel somewhere else whilst we are stuck in
rainy season. We welcomed two new players, Bryan MacDonald and his wife Lui
Guilan. Bryan proved to be a tenuous Canadian, being the only one to finish
today. We also welcomed back Rob Taylor, Bill Steimann and Dave Arrowsmith,
all here on holiday again.
Fairly unique for i-Rovers golf today, with one lady player off 15 handicap
and all the men were rated 11 or under, so it really made for some good golf
to watch.
The weather was great on the front nine holes but we counted our blessings
too soon and the black clouds rolled in. I played in the last group and made
it to the 15th green before being forced to putt out in typical tropical
rain. It just looked set in with no chance it was going to finish soon so we
decided to call it a day.
I felt sorry for Rob Taylor playing in my group; he had a great round going
with 3 or 4 birdies and a great tap in eagle on one of the par 5’s. I think
he would have finished 1 or 2 under, which is great golf in the wet
conditions. .
The aforementioned Bryan MacDonald (h/cap 10) was the only one to finish and
so was declared the winner today. He managed some good golf and would have
been much better, leaking 3 or 4 shots in the rain.
All are welcome to come and play golf with the i-Rovers group. Call Paul on
087 189 5250 for details.

Parker takes over at the top
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Oct. 21, Pattana C & A –
Stableford
The morning was bright and breezy, but there was still only a small turnout
of golfers for our visit to Pattana.

The John Preddy Memorial
Trophy will be contested on November 22.
We arrived at the course to find it was in excellent
condition, and the only visible sign of the recent downpours was that the
lake in front of the clubhouse was empty! Our caddies informed us that the
lake had been so full that water pressure broken through one of the
retaining walls on the C course resulting in all the water draining out, and
now major works are underway to repair the damage.
We elected to play from the white tees, which with a course length in excess
of 6,700 yards presents a tough test but at least the fairways were dry
enough to provide some roll for the ball.
The weather remained fine throughout the round, and although the clouds
started to gather on the inward nine no rain came our way, so we were
surprised when we returned to Pattaya to find there’d been heavy rain there
for most of the day.
Andy Brady and his friend Bernie Ruschmeyer produced the best scores of the
day, and a count back was needed to separate them, giving Andy his second
win in four games which propelled him into the lead for the Golfer of the
Month race.
1st Andy Brady (18) 34pts
2nd Bernd Ruschmeyer (12) 34pts
3rd Neil Hurst (12) 33pts
Near Pins: Andy Brady and Neil Hurst.
Wednesday, Oct. 23, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
Another beautiful morning, but a disappointingly small turnout
for the longer trip than normal to the Royal Lakeside course. Despite today
being a public holiday we had a reasonable deal for the green fee, but when
we arrived at the course we were a little surprised at how busy it was, so
maybe there were other deals around as well.
We teed off on schedule from the blue tees and it was immediately evident
that the course was in great condition, and although it was busy, the round
progressed smoothly. Playing from the blue tees produces a course distance
slightly over 6,800 yards but there’s a good variety of holes here, so it
doesn’t necessarily favour the longer hitters.
Geoff Parker produced one of his best performances for a while to
comfortably take the top podium position despite having two blobs, resulting
from bad course management, on the inward nine. Neil Hurst took second place
after recovering from a poor front nine by scoring 22 points on the back
nine.
Having spent the whole day under cloudless blue skies we drove into heavy
rain on the outskirts of Pattaya and discovered that it had been a miserable
afternoon there, so the longer trip had certainly been worthwhile.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 35pts
2nd Neil Hurst (12) 33pts
Near Pins: Andy Brady, Bernie Ruschmeyer and Geoff Parker.
Friday, Oct. 25, The Emerald – Stableford
We were forced into a late change of venue today when we arrived
at our scheduled venue, the Navy course, to find there were no caddies
available and a large queue of players waiting in the clubhouse. A quick
phone call to Emerald secured us our required three tee times and we arrived
at the course to find it empty, so we were very welcome late arrivals
indeed!
The Emerald course is still recovering from major work on the fairways, but
the large areas of GUR are now clearly marked and appear to be recovering
rapidly. Generally the course was in perfectly playable shape, and we were
well pleased to be able to enjoy a good game of golf at such short notice.
The weather was fine throughout, although a large black cloud appeared on
the back nine, but fortunately passed by us without affecting the game.
Geoff Parker continued his good form from Wednesday, but a few missed putts
on the inward nine allowed Gerry Cooney to take the honours on the count
back (18 points on the back nine). Tony Robbins took third place also on a
count back (19 points on the back nine) ahead of Neil Hurst.
A good week for Geoff Parker saw him take a narrow lead in the race for the
Golfer of the Month title ahead of Neil Hurst, but Tony Robbins was the dark
horse appearing on the rails with two games remaining.
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 36pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 36pts
3rd Tony Robbins (15) 35pts
Near Pins: Andy Brady, Bernd Ruschmeyer, Geoff Parker, and Gerry
Cooney.

Voller at the vanguard in Chiang Mai
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Tuesday, Oct. 22, CM Highlands –
Stableford
A group of 24 players and partners made the trip to Chiang Mai for our third
annual visit. There was a competition over the three days of our stay but
the majority warmed up Monday at the Mae Jo course.

Chris Voller.
It was still the rainy season here and the Highlands
course was a little sodden so ‘pick clean and place’ was the order of the
day. The equal cut for the week in the two divisions was 4-15 and 20+ and
there were nearest the pins and of course the ‘2’s to fight for.
Two scores of 39 were returned in Division 1, with Chris Voller beating Dean
Worrell on a 20/19 back nine count back and Russell taking third with 35
points after beating Lindsay Phillips on a 19/15 back nine count back.
Mark Armstrong topped Division 2 with 37 points, Bob Polle was second on 36
and Terry Redding placed third with 31.
Near pins went to Russell Gilroy, Martin Grimoldby (2), Chris Voller, Rod
Howett, Andy Oz and Terry Redding (2).
Russell Gilroy birdied the 17th and in division 2 Rod Howett the 7th for the
only ‘2’s of the day.
Thursday, Oct. 24, Alpine G.C. – Stableford
A forty minute drive from the Raming Lodge brought us to the
Alpine, with some gloomy skies off in the distance. It was very busy as we
arrived but we were still able to tee off bang on time.
Martin Grimoldby came home with 37 points to win Division 1, with Billy
Fitzgerald second on 34 and Dean Worrell taking third with 33.

Burnie Sinclair.
Burnie Sinclair was the winner in Division 2 with 32
points ahead of Rod Howett in second on 30, and with 8 points on the front
nine and 21 on the back Mark Armstrong was third with 29.
There were some slow Koreans in front and it was a five hour round but the
weather stayed ok and there were a few remarks afterwards that the players
found the course very tough today.
Near pins were claimed by Billy Fitzgerald, John Oxley (2), Chris Voller,
Glyn Evans, Glenn King and Burnie Sinclair.
There were three ‘2’s in Division 1 from Kevin Blake, John Oxley and Chris
Voller, while Burnie Sinclair birdied the 12th to take the pot in Division
2.
Friday, Oct. 24,
Royal Chiang Mai – Stableford
Our last round of the week and the 3-day competition was still
wide open to a dozen players or more. The weather looked promising and we
arrived to an almost deserted course and teed off 30 minutes ahead of
schedule.
John Oxley was on form today to win Division 1 with 39 points, with Dean
Worrell in second on 36 and missing the telephone box Dennis Scougall was
third with 34.

Russell Gilroy.
Burnie Sinclair claimed Division 2 honours with 33 points
to finish ahead of Colin James in second, who in turn beat Glenn King 13/12
on count back, both scoring 32’s.
Everyone enjoyed this course today and a few commenting that it was almost
like a traditional tree lined English layout.
Near pins went to Kevin Blake, Mike Chatt, John Oxley, Dean Worrell, Mark
Armstrong and Bob Poole.
Mike Lewis, John Oxley, Wichai Tananusorn and Dean Worrell split the ‘2’s
pot in the first division and there were no ‘2’s in the second.
The overall winner of the Giant Panda Tour this year was Chris Voller with
98 points. Burnie Sinclair occupied second place on 95 and Russell Gilroy
and John Oxley were joint third with 93 each.
It was a great week was enjoyed by all the golfers and partners and many
thanks go to Jenny at the Raming Lodge and also to Lyn and Terry.

John Oxley.

Golfnutter: Statistics –Yours (part 2)

Keeping own stats – a pro’s
example.
“Guaranteed to take strokes off your game;” was last
week’s opening gambit suggesting you start keeping your own stats. The stats
in question were Driving, GIR, Scrambling and Putting. After defining each,
some basic instruction was offered, along with targets based upon handicap
grouping. Now to part two.
The card above shows what a pro might take note of, and how. It shows 13
putts for the first nine, including five one-putts. Two from two in
scrambling; chipping an 8-iron to three-feet, and a sand-wedge to four. GIR
shows seven from nine greens in regulation, as well as noting distance from
hole. Finally driving; three from seven fairways hit, with two missing right
and two left. This is an illustration on notation. It shows how golfers
could record their round for the purposes of analysis.
So much for the pros, now to us amateurs where I recommend one addition:
record a plus, a minus or a half (ie. +, -, or 0) against each hole
depicting your net result against par – as in a par competition. Don’t
expect to match or beat par very often – about one round in ten would be
doing well.
Once you have accumulated ten cards, start compiling your own spread-sheet
on Microsoft Excel, some other golf software or in hard-copy on your newly
acquired Golf Diary. Allow one line entry per round showing date, course
(include tees), results of each stat, net score and result against par. You
are now closer to identifying where your game offers most improvement.
A meaningful improvement in driving and GIR stats requires more than this
modest column can manage. Suffice to repeat what was said last week; play
your natural shape shot away from trouble, and always aim for the middle of
the green. Genuine ball-striking improvement will probably require swing
change, and that requires an accredited teaching pro – which this column is
not.
Driving/GIR Goals: As a rough rule-of-thumb, to break 90 you should hit
three greens; to break 80, eight greens; to break 70, 13 greens.
Putting: No other area of the game is likely to offer more in shot-reduction
than the putting surface. As stated last week, there is no physical reason
why we can’t putt as well as the pros, yet the difference between their
putting performance and ours is huge. Reducing three-putts will make a
significant difference. Two important keys here are distance control and
knowing where to leave your lag-putt.
Last week the suggestion was made to search the net for distance-control
drills. Possibly the best I’ve come across is this one, based entirely on
feel.
First, accept that better putters focus more on distance than they do
direction. Second, learn how to putt a certain distance through the feedback
of feeling in the hands. Choose a flat putting surface with lengths of 10,
25, and 50 feet. Try ten putts from each distance, concentrating on two
things: hitting the putter’s sweet-spot and remembering the feeling of each
putt. Keep your eyes fixed at the address position after each putt (don’t
look up), and state out loud where you think the ball finished, e.g. “short
right, 3-feet”, etc. Then check your estimate against actual.
After a while your guesses will improve. At that point start putting using
the feel for that particular length. It’s feedback you’re after, immediate
feedback of the feel you know your hands give you when you stroke a ball 10,
25, or 50-feet. This feedback can be felt far easier when you do not look at
the hole after putting. Be warned, this is not a five-minute exercise.
When lag putting, know the ground around the hole. Know where you want the
ball to finish, or not finish. Avoid leaving yourself a downhill or breaking
putt. Should your ball go past the hole, always learn from the path it
takes.
Scrambling: Last week we suggested you become good at the basic chip-shot, a
chip-and-run shot played from a good lie close to the green. Select a lofted
club – enough to land on the flat part of the green – and incorporate your
putting stroke. In short, this chip is a putt with a lofted club, and yes –
you are going for that feel.
Note to the high-handicapper; when chipping to a green that is downhill and
down-grain, ensure you are long – always.
Conclusion: We set out trying to improve your game without it costing an arm
or a leg. If this proves to be the case then between us, we have succeeded.
If your problems persist, I recommend you visit a teaching pro. If that
doesn’t work I suggest you purchase a bar beer which should, after a few
months, eliminate your golfing problems entirely.
Happy golfing,
Golfnutter

Bill & Geoff take the honours at Navy
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Geoff Bracegirdle, Alby Uppington & Bill
Steinman.
Peter Blackburn & San Mig Stu
Monday, Oct. 21, Plutaluang East & South – Stableford
It was a relief to see a fine and sunny Pattaya Monday morning after all
the recent downpours and we assembled at The Growling Swan to prepare
for our trip to Plutaluang. There was one late cancellation due to
sickness which left us with 21 starters and we welcomed back Ed Stewart
from California, Bill Steinman from New York and Ulff Larsson from
Sweden. It was also a farewell to your writer, Peter Blackburn who was
off back to Perth, Australia for a couple of weeks.
With everyone on time we departed the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 am and
headed south down Number 3, arriving at the course just 42 minutes later
(J.J. please note). The course was very busy and we were allocated East
& South nines for a change and were able to send our first four-ball
away twenty minutes ahead of schedule at 9.40 am.
With a five-ball in front of us and many groups ahead of them it was
obvious that we were in for another slow round but the course was good
although quite wet with the greens traditionally slow but very well
maintained and for a change the weather was terrific. As expected it was
a bit of a crawl and turned out to be a five hour round but nonetheless
very enjoyable with excellent company.

Gary Monley, Niall Stuart and Stuart
Rifkin.
We had 2 divisions, Division A for handicaps 0 to 18 and Division B for
handicaps of 19 and over with 4 places in each division. There were also
rewards for nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first
putts on the East 9 & South 9 greens.
Newcomer Bill Steinman was the winner in A Division with a score of 37
points and yours truly Peter “Blacky” Blackburn was second just 1 point
further back. In third place came Andy Todd on 33 points and with 2
golfers on 31 points it was John Pierrel (15 point back nine) who
finished fourth from Keith “Kissy” Buchanan (14 point back nine) on a
count back.
In B Division it was Geoff Bracegirdle who “got the chocolates” with 33
points and another count back saw Patrick Poussier (13 point back nine)
finish second ahead of Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad (11 point back nine) with
Seesa Phonpinmon in fourth place on 30 points.
Division A
1st Bill Steinman (8) 37pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 36pts
3rd Andy Todd (12) 33pts
4th John Pierrel (9) 31pts
Division B
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (21) 33pts
2nd Patrick Poussier (23) 32pts
3rd Duangjai Tusagad (21) 32pts
4th Seesa Phonpinmon (26) 30pts
Near Pins: E2 – Duangjai Tusagad, E5 – John Davies, S4 – Kissy
Buchanan, S7 – Bill Steinman
Long Putts: E9 – John Davies, S9 – Seesa Phonpinmon
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won
by Alby Uppington and he accepted the award in very good spirit.
Thursday, Oct. 24, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
With our illustrious ‘el presidente’ (Peter Blackburn) away in Oz for a
few weeks the organization for the day was left in the incapable hands
of Peter Grey, John Pierrel, Dick Braimbridge and Stu Rifkin. Why one
man’s job was substituted by four, became clear by day’s end.
Amazingly the mini buses were ordered and arrived on time (I think
perhaps because the President had wisely taken the precaution to do this
before his departure to Oz) and all players boarded well after the
elected 8.15am departure time. This was as a result of one of the
substitute organizers getting organized. Nevertheless, we did get to the
course an hour later and still with a few minutes to spare before tee
off time.
During check in procedures in the pro shop, Peter Grey (temporary
organizer) was observed eyeing florescent colored balls, he selected a
bright yellow one and seemed over the moon by his choice. So attached
was he that he asked if he could substitute the ball for an older white
one, when he later had a water hazard to carry. He soon discovered
though that his little beauty did not float. Despite this huge
disappointment, he went on to score his best round ever and narrowly
missed out on the NAGA award.
As carts were allowed on the fairways it was “play the ball as it lies”
and no relief anywhere on the course, which is a vast change from the
many days of recent golf where the “pick, clean and place” rule has been
in effect due to the wet conditions.
The course was in great condition with very slick greens, and on a
perfect golf day the first group teed off under a cloudless and sunny
sky. It remained that way throughout the day which ensured everyone had
no excuses for bad weather to affect their scores but surprisingly only
one golfer managed to play to his handicap.
Back in the club house the cards were checked, checked and rechecked by
the temporary organizers and after a “few hours” Peter Grey welcomed
Paul Seaford (a guest of Graham Buckingham) who hails from Ely in the UK
and Geoff Green from Brisbane Australia. Peter then announced the
winners and also delighted in taking Deefa around for some donations
which go to charity.
As I have been given the task (punishment) of substitute scribe, I have
decided to list the podium place getters in reverse order and thus it is
with hearty congratulations that we placed Niall Stuart as the NAGA
award winner once more. Tiger Woods may be the leading PGA golfer for
2013 but Niall takes the cake this year when it comes to this Growling
Swan golf outlet award. Good on you Niall for your constant dedication
and your never ending good spirits too!
The winner of Division B with 31 points was Gary Monley who despite some
sad news from his home in Oz, managed to keep it together today. Ernie
Picken took out second spot with 27 points and the ladies figured in the
final three with Rita Zoebeli being victorious on 24 points.
Division A saw Stu Rifkin back to form with 36 points followed closely
by fellow standby organizer John Pierrel with 35 points and the
consistent Gerd Riedler with 34.
Division A
1st Stuart Rifkin (13) 36pts
2nd John Pierrel (9) 35pts
3rd Gerd Riedler (6) 34pts
Division B
1st Gary Monley (36) 31pts
2nd Ernie Picken (21) 27pts
3rd Rita Zoebeli (22) 24pts
Near Pins: 12th hole Bill Stienmann, 15th hole Gerd Riedler.
Long Putts: John Pierrel.
Note: The Growling Swan Golf outlet welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and
beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The
Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am
with transport departing most times at 8.30 am. For bookings or more
information please contact Peter Blackburn on 0806 351 386 or email to
[email protected].
We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday.
Sunday is Lawn Bowls played at The Retreat and Wednesday is Indoor Bowls
at the undercover Coco’s. All are welcome and for anyone that is
interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10.00am on each of
those mornings. For more information please contact Paul Rennison on

Bracegirdle’s rule the day at Greenwood
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top three back at
Bert’s.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Oct. 22, Greenwood – Stableford
It is a long way to go to Greenwood if it is going to rain there, so we had
a smaller than normal group who arrived at Bert’s early in the morning. The hope
was to get onto the transport early and so be early on the first tee. The
reality was ‘somehow’ we had a bus problem and so finally got underway half an
hour late. Call it a language problem, still we did manage to get up there and
our first group was away on time. Thanks go to the other group who were
understanding when we shared the rest of the tee-offs. Mind, it was tight.
So one good thing about being there was that the carts were allowed on the
fairways and as we went around we found this to be justified. The fairways were
good, if not even firm, and as an addition we got to play the B Nine. Not having
played it for some time it was a question of spotting the differences. Actually,
I did not really spot any although the Nine was in really good condition. We
then went onto the C course and this Nine was also in good condition, so we had
a good walk around on reasonably good fairways.
We found that after the soggy greens of late, the greens here, although sanded
slightly, were playing fast and this threw a few players, including the scribe.
We did not however get off completely Scott free. As the early groups sat in the
restaurant the heavens opened and it hammered down, seems the Golf Gods were
with us, except for our last four-ball who were just finishing as it hit. It is
sometime good to be in the first four-ball. The near the pin markers came in
soaking wet, however I did say to the last four-ball how sad I was that they got
wet, but they thought the smile on my face made it not true. Sad really.
Late back at Bert’s a hot cup of tea soon revitalised me and the results were
soon read out. The winner, with the best round he has ever had, was Max
Bracegirdle with 45 points, and way back in the dust we had a count back on 35
points that was won by Dick Warberg in second and Geoff Bracegirdle in third. So
it was really a Bracegirdle Day. T.T.F.N.

Stuvik to test GP2 in Abu Dhabi

Local race driver Sandy Stuvik will have the
opportunity to test out a GP2 car in Abu Dhabi next week with the Italian based
Rapax Team. European Formula 3 Open championship
leader Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik from Thailand has confirmed that he has signed a
contract with the Italian Rapax Team to test a GP2 formula car in Abu Dhabi, on
5th and 6th of November, following the Emirati Formula 1 round at the Yas Marina
Circuit. The GP2 test will be held together with the yearly Formula 1 Young
Driver test.
The GP2 series Dallara formula car produces 612 HP from a 4 liter V8 engine and
is only marginally slower than a Formula 1 car. Consequently the GP2 series is
considered one of the main learning series for drivers going to Formula 1. The
Thai driver tested last week in Dallara’s simulator in Parma, Italy and was put
through numerous aerodynamic scenarios and settings to familiarize himself with
the car. Both the team and Stuvik were very encouraged by the initial tests.
Although, the GP2 series car will be a big step up from his current Formula 3
machine, Stuvik himself feels ready after graduating from almost 10 years of
karting and 4 years of progressing up the ranks of formula cars in Europe. The
GP2 cars are capable of reaching over 330 km/h and only Formula 1 and Indy cars
go faster, however, Stuvik is not fazed by the raw power or speed of the car,
but believes his biggest challenge will be in mastering the enormous braking
capability, similar to that of Formula 1.
Stuvik himself said; “I have been training hard together with several
established GP2 drivers this whole year to ensure that I will be physically and
mentally fit to handle the car and to take it to its maximum potential. We
learnt tremendously much this year from RP Motorsport, about racing to the
maximum and this is something we want to build further on as we move towards
Formula 1. I am very happy to test with the Italian team Rapax in Abu Dhabi and
since I train in Italy now, it is very easy to work with them. I am also very
grateful to my sponsors The Pizza Company, Singha and Dacon who believe in me
and have given me this opportunity.”
Stuvik is currently working with a number of Thai global corporations, such as
The Pizza Company and Singha and Dacon Inspection Services to achieve funding
for a 2 year program aimed towards competing in a Formula 1 feeder series, with
the clear aim at ultimately racing in Formula 1. The GP2 series is one such
series, racing alongside Formula 1, providing worldwide TV coverage for the
sponsors.
The European Formula 3 Open championship reaches its conclusion next weekend,
Nov. 9 to 10 in Barcelona with Stuvik leading the series by 20 points over
second placed Ed Jones of the United Arab Emirates.

Cordeiro cracks it with a 42

Dare I say it? Is the rainy season over for another year? We had an absolutely
gorgeous week of golf here in Pattaya last week and even the temperature dropped
a few degrees to make for perfect golf weather. Sure, it’s a bit clammy around
mid-day, but not nearly as bad as it has been. We have all noticed a pleasant
change, which really makes Pattaya a golfer’s paradise!
It sure must have helped Jeff Cordeiro on Monday. With 4 birdies and a couple of
bogeys he had one heck of a round to beat the field with a tremendous 42 points
on the day. Jeff took second place here the previous week, but this time the
putts just kept droppin’ and that is a great round of golf!
Poor Bob McPhail, a 41 would usually be enough to take top spot, but he chose
the wrong day for a great round and had to settle for second. Mike Newbert also
showed a return to form and the ‘Montauk Mauler’ was rewarded with 3rd place
with his 39 points.

Friday was the day for our pal Kenny Aihara to break out his new clubs. Those
sleek new TaylorMade R11 irons and a new hot pink bag (no, it wasn’t Hello
Kitty, I checked!) were just the ticket. The new putter, however, was not so hot
so you may be seeing a hardly used flat club on ebay this week.
Kenny has a legendary short game, and knows how to finesse those Vokey wedges in
a truly masterful fashion. He did just that on this day, but our fearless Golf
Captain Phil Smedley did one better as the affable Aussie won it with just 33
points! Kenny shared 2nd place with Anders Pedersen and will now be on the
lookout for a new putter that works as well as the new irons.
Finally, we must congratulate Michael Winterburn for his 1st place Low Net at
the Siam Country Club Members Tournament on Sunday the 27th. There was a lot of
stiff competition out there and Michael did a great job of holding off the field
for his victory.

United eye relegation
as fans riot in Pattaya

Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday, Oct. 27. (Photo/Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United’s season looks set to end in ignominious
fashion after fans rioted at the end of their crucial Thai Premier League
fixture against Chaingrai United at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last Sunday.
The 1-0 defeat to relegation threatened rivals Chiangrai almost certainly
signals the end of Pattaya’s current three year stint in Thailand’s top flight.
Only an unlikely victory over Police United in Bangkok this coming weekend,
coupled with a defeat for Samut Songkram at home to Ratchaburi, would enable the
Dolphins to avoid the drop as Pattaya have a better head to head record over
Samut Songkram.
The game last Sunday was billed as a battle for Premier League survival but no
one could have expected it to become a war between fans and police. The turning
point in the match came in the 67th minute when the visitors were awarded a
penalty kick after Pattaya defender Apinan Suantong upended Chiangrai’s
Brazilian midfielder Uilian Souza in the box with a blatant trip.
Anon Sangsanoi’s converted spot kick signaled the first demonstration by Pattaya
fans and the game had to be suspended temporarily while the pitch was cleared of
supporters. This proved to be just a foretaste however, and when the referee
blew for full time to signal defeat for Pattaya, their fans invaded the pitch en
masse and surrounded the main stand where the match officials and Pattaya
coaching staff were forced to flee under police guard.
The demonstration went on for over an hour with police units and over 200
officers called in from stations all over Pattaya to help quell the disturbance
as angry fans hurled rocks at stadium windows and caused considerable damage to
the main stand. Almost unbelievably, no arrests were made at the scene although
police say they are now talking to the United Supporters Club and studying video
footage with a view to pressing charges against individuals.
Even if by some miracle Pattaya manage to avoid the drop to division 1, it seems
unlikely that they will avoid some form of severe punishment from Thai Premier
League officials for the unseemly behavior of their supporters last weekend.
Meanwhile at the top of the table, Buriram reclaimed the Premier League title
with a 2-0 win at Bangkok United. Closest rivals Muangthong United could only
manage a 2-2 draw at BEC which means Buriram have now opened up a 5 point gap
and can no longer be caught.
