Gordon makes
winning return
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, June 3, Plutaluang - Stableford
Monday saw the group head down Sukhumvit to play Plutaluang West and
North loops. We checked in and were off the West 1 tee 40 minutes early
under partly sunny and steamy conditions. The course on the day was in great
condition and the best value around at THB1,000 for green fee, caddie and
shared cart.
The course was not busy so we made it around in 4 hours flat. Back in the
clubhouse, welcomes went out to Daryl Evans, back from Australia and winter
skiing in Hokaido and Gordon Evringhan who has not played with us for a long
time. It was the latter in fact who emerged the winner today as Gordon took
top honours with 34pts ahead of Dave Richardson in second with 32.
Miss Nut back to form with
win at Emerald
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
Monday, June 3, Pattana - Stableford
The wet season is here again and as we drove up the
331 it did not look promising, with some very dark and rolling clouds as
we approached the course. It was deserted here and with the A course
shut we were allocated the B and C nines today. It was still very gloomy
as we teed off and this stayed the same for the next nine holes with a
few spots of rain.

Jerry Sweetnam.
No problems so far but the thunder and lightning started as the last
group was halfway down the 10th fairway and the marshall called them in
to a safe place and also all the groups in front had been taken off
course as well.
The skies were very dark and we resumed our game after a thirty minute
stoppage, but still no sign of any rain, and we all came in after 18
holes with threatening clouds throughout the round but no rain, amazing!
There were two 35’s in today with Colin James recording one of them to
win division 1. Welcome back to Takashi Hakozaki, still playing off 10,
who came in second with 34 and Billy Fitzgerald was third on 33.
Andy Oz was the winner in division 2 on the other 35, with ‘Count back’
Burnie in second place three points behind and Glenn King took third
with 31.
Colin James birdied C2 to take the ‘2’s pot in the second division while
a rollover ensued to the Emerald in division 1.
Wednesday, June 5, The Emerald -
Stableford
Yet again there was heavy rain overnight here in
Jomtien and bursts of showers early morning and there were seven
cancellations, so only 5 groups made the trip. There were a few slight
showers before we teed off but we went out on time.
A cut of 8-17 today in division 1 and Jerry Sweetnam returned a score of
36 to take first place ahead of Curtis Hessler the Welsh wizard in
second one point behind, and Terry Madsen was third after beating Pete
Sumner 17/17 and 11/11 and 6/4 on count back on the last three holes,
both on 31.

Miss Nut.
Miss Nut, now playing off the white tees with a handicap of 23, returned
her best score for many months to win division 2 with 36 points. Neil
gamble came in second, beating Lee Casey on a 17/15 back nine count back
after they both scored 33 points.
There were no ‘2’s today so a rollover in both divisions to Treasure
Hills on Monday.
It was also time to say Bon Voyage to Pete Sumner and his lovely wife;
we will all see you in three months.
Friday, June 7, Eastern Star - Rainbow
Stableford
Every couple of months we have a fun game courtesy of
the rollover kitty. Today was a two divisional comp with each player
selecting six red, six white and six blues to tee off from. This is a
game of logic for the individual player and some of the remarks
afterwards were, “I played all the par threes off the reds because I had
a better chance of winning nearest the pins,” or “I played all the par
threes off the blues because I can hit my driver straighter than a
medium iron shot,” etc. and this went on and on with many other
interesting ideas and solutions.
There were seven groups out with the cut at 5-17 in division 1 and Ted
Gardner won that flight with 36 points. Lindsay Phillips came in second
three points behind Ted and Martin Grimoldby took third with 32, beating
Marty Rock on a 12/10 back six count back.
Thirty-six was also the winning score in division 2 for Iain Walsh while
the organiser claimed second on 35 after some remarkable tee shots never
been seen before, and Pepo Frick was third with 32 points.
Everybody enjoyed the format, it made a nice change and the weather was
brilliant today. It was also great to see Harry Riley back in the fold.
Near pins went to Paul Butler (2), Jerry Sweetnam, Neil Gamble, Ian
Hart, Harry Riley and Burnie Sinclair.
Other technical prizes were claimed by Martin Grimoldby and Ian Hart
(Nearest pin in two shots #Hole 2), Ted Gardner and Harry Riley (Nearest
pin in three shots #Hole 8), Lindsay Phillips and Colin James
(Straightest Drives #Hole 9), Martin Grimoldby and Neil Gamble (Nearest
pin in two shots #Hole 12), and Ted Gardner and Rod Howett (Nearest pin
in three shots #Hole 16).
There were no ‘2’s in the top flight but Glyn Evans birdied both the
13th and 17th with 8ft and 25ft putts respectively to clean up the pot
in division 2 (never been seen before and probably never will again!)

Rain puts a dampener on Aussie challenge match
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

(From left) Greg Kennedy, Bruce Campbell, Andrew
Kennedy, Wayne & Wally.
Monday, June 3, Burapha – Stableford
We had a good field of 32 golfers on A and B from the blues, bolstered by a
group of visitors from Australia. As usual during the low season the starter
got us off early in fine weather which suddenly deteriorated as a storm hit,
which forced a number of players somewhat hastily off the course; but as is
often the case, after half an hour or so it cleared and we continued on a
well drained course.

Russell Goldsworthy.
Welcome back to golf to Steve having his first game since his accident and
welcome also to the Aussie visitors, David Barwick and friends.
There was 3 Grades 1st to 3rd with the best score of 36pts coming from
Russell Goldsworthy playing off 4 in Grade A followed home by Paul Bourke
(34) and Rosco (31).
Vic Hester plays with the Outback from time to time and this time he made it
pay dividends, winning Grade B with 33pts from Jimmy Little (30) and John
Player (28).
Grade C went to Colin Etter having his first game with the Outback as a
visitor with Dave Barwick’s group, on 33pts beating regular podium finisher
Andy Makara on count back. Third place was filled by the day’s organiser and
joint writer of this article, Tim Knight with 31.
There were five ‘2’s from Jim Brackett, John Cunningham & Rosco (all on the
6th) and Stefan Hoge & Jimmy Little (both on the 12th).
Div A (0-13)
1st Russell Goldsworthy (4) 36pts
2nd Paul Bourke (8) 34pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (13) 31pts
Div B (14-18)
1st Vic Hester (16) 33pts
2nd Jimmy Little (18) 30pts
3rd John Player (17) 28pts
Div C (19+)
1st Colin Etter (33) 33pts
2nd Andy Makara (26) 33pts
3rd Tim Knight (21) 31pts
Wednesday, June 5, Phoenix - Stableford
With 26 names down for the annual State of Origin Challenge it was
disappointing to get to the course to find the heavens had opened up...
hello wet season!! and this was to be our first trip to Phoenix for well
over a year. The two captains were Bourkey (aka Paul Bourke for the Blues)
and the Sugarman (aka Sugar Ray for the Maroons).

Colin Etter with Tim Knight.
A simple format, 13 players on each side with the best 10 stableford scores
from each side being added together; the higher total thus winning and gain
the bragging rights. Bourkey and the Sugarman had also sponsored the near
pins and John Player & Sel Wegner two hidden 9 prizes.
However, it was not to be, with 10 players not even making the starting
blocks due to the weather, it was decided to postpone the match for three
weeks until the second State of Origin game on June 26th.
So the remaining 16 golfers teed off half an hour late playing a normal
Outback tournament.
The course itself was in good condition but the attitude of the starters and
staff has not really changed, we still come last with preference being shown
to Koreans yet again.
Despite the rain the back nine (Ocean) was remarkably dry - there was one
division; first to fifth with Andy Butterworth beating Mark McDonald on a
c/b with 36pts. Mark also had the only ‘2’. Andy Robertson was third on 34,
with Stefan Hoge beating Sugar on count back both on 33.
Back at the bar, the big match was shown live and thanks to General Jack for
putting on complimentary beef sausages, onion gravy and mash at half time.
1st Andy Butterworth (12) 36pts
2nd Mark McDonald (3) 36pts
3rd Andy Robertson (14) 34pts
4th Stefan Hoge (17) 33pts
5th Sugar Ray Handford (16) 33pts
Wednesday, June 5, Siam Plantation - Stableford
Another rained affected round of golf, the third this week, after Burapha on
Monday and Phoenix also today, but at least here it wasn’t too bad. Seven
out of the nine starters finished playing the A & C nines and the honours
went to two of our visitors from Cabramatta Golf Club, south west of Sydney,
NSW. A couple of them had played with the Outback before, Bruce and Greg, so
welcome back to them and welcome also to Wally, Andrew and Wayne with us for
the first time.
It must be said that until the start of this week, golf had been unaffected
by the weather but these boys arriving on Monday changed all that. It all
started for them on Tuesday at Laem Chabang with a midday tee time, delayed
through a tremendous storm with them arriving back at the bar at about
6.45pm.
Today the rain was not going to deter them either, they came here to play
golf and that’s what they did; they enjoyed themselves to the full and
congratulations to Bruce for his win with 35pts and also to Andrew for his
second place on 34. Andre Coetzee, on one of his short visits, took third
with 33.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Bruce Campbell (19) 35pts
2nd Andrew Kennedy (13) 34pts
3rd Andre Coetzee (7) 33pts
Friday, June 7, Green Valley - Stableford
This has been a disastrous week for golf as regards the weather with most of
the 35 players failing to start here at St. Andrews, due to heavy rain and a
rain sodden course. Some players did get round, including our visitors but
not enough to make a tournament, so all the start money was handed back or
credited until the next start and we were also handed a number of nine hole
rain-checks, see Suzi or Tim for details and hats off to Green Valley
management.
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Ed Wyckoff wins a close one
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 3,The Emerald – Stableford
With a field of 21 golfers signed up we met at the
Growling Swan in readiness for the journey to Emerald and there were several
welcomes to be handed out. Graham “Grunter” Buckingham was back from his
annual sojourn to the UK, Eddie Townsend from Perth, Western Australia, Paul
Jackson who is here for 6 weeks from Melbourne, Australia and newcomer Ed
Wyckoff, formerly from Alabama, USA but now residing in Pattaya.

Geoff Bracegirdle & Ed
Wyckoff.
Everyone was on time so we headed off
South in 2 mini vans and did encounter some light rain during the journey
which prompted Eddie Townsend to remark on 2 occasions that we would be
getting wet bums during the course of the day. He was later fined for making
these foolish & inaccurate remarks so should think twice before making
weather predictions in future.
We arrived at the course 45 minutes later where the place was practically
deserted and invited to tee off at our leisure. Under overcast skies our
first four-ball teed off 15 minutes ahead of schedule and with no-one to be
seen in front of us we proceeded at a cracking pace, completing the front
nine in just one hour & forty five minutes. The rain clouds disappeared of
course and conditions were perfect for golf as it was not too hot and there
was a gentle breeze.
The golf course was looking good but there were many GUR areas on the
fairways and the greens were quite slow, particularly on the front nine
after recent coring & sanding. Nonetheless it was still a pleasure to play
this excellent but tough layout and our good pace continued enabling us to
complete the full round in the very good time of three hours and forty
minutes.
We were able to have 2 Grades with four podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 16 and B Grade for 17 and over. There were rewards for
nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th &
18th greens.
It was very tight at the top of A Grade with 2 golfers on 38 points and the
resultant count back saw newcomer Ed Wyckoff (20 point back nine) finish
first from the in-form Kevin Waycott (18 point back nine) in second spot.
With four players on 36 points another count back was necessary to decide
third & fourth places and it was Ebrahim (20 point back nine & 15 points on
the last 6 holes) edging out your writer, Peter Blackburn (20 point back
nine & 14 points on the last 6 holes). Missing out on a podium placing were
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (19 point back nine) and Ken Hole (15
point back nine).
Geoff Bracegirdle returned to form and finished on top in B Grade with 36
points, 2 points ahead of Irishman Geri Crilly in second spot. Eddie
Townsend was third with 32 points and Graham “Grunter” Buckingham’s 31
points was enough to earn him fourth place.
A Flight (0-16)
1st Ed Wyckoff (10) 38pts
2nd Kevin Waycott (10) 38pts
3rd Ebrahim (15) 36pts
4th Peter Blackburn (11) 36pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (20) 36pts
2nd Geri Crilly (27) 34pts
3rd Eddie Townsend (17) 32pts
4th Graham Buckingham (24) 31pts
Near Pins: 5th – Ken Hole, 7th – Ken Hole, 13th – Kevin Waycott, 15th
– Ebrahim
Long Putts: 9th – Ed Wyckoff, 18th – Mark West
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won once again
by Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper who naturally accepted the award in fine
spirit. Unfortunately the organiser, yours truly forgot to bring the NAGA
cap so Sandy was unable to wear it and was devastated when told that he
would not appear in the photo.
Thursday, June 6, Mountain Shadow –
Stableford
Following the withdrawal of your
writer due to a motorbike accident on Wednesday we were down to just 15
golfers for the journey to Mountain Shadow and as we assembled at the
Growling Swan we welcomed Tony Yemn from Western Australia who was with us
for the first time. I farewelled the guys at 8.35 am, 5 minutes later than
scheduled and am told the journey was just 44 minutes.
The course was looking good and the first group got away about 10 minutes
ahead of schedule, completing the round in about four hours & ten minutes.
Due to the smaller field we just had the one grade and went down to five
places. There were rewards for nearest the pins on all the par threes and
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
In top spot was veteran Ted Morris and his 37 points was the best score of
the day. With 3 golfers on 34 points a count back was required which
resulted in Ebrahim (17 point back nine) finishing second from Sal Brizzi
(16 point back nine) in third place and Paul Hack (15 point back nine) was
fourth. Another count back saw Mark West (18 point back nine) finish fifth,
edging out the luckless Geri Crilly (16 point back nine) with both having 33
points.
1st Ted Morris (12) 37pts
2nd Ebrahim (15) 34pts
3rd Sal Brizzi (7) 34pts
4th Paul Hack (11) 34pts
5th Mark West (14) 33pts
Near Pins: 5th – Ted Morris, 8th – Ebrahim, 15th – Paul Hack, 17th –
Ebrahim
Long Putts: 9th – Geri Crilly, 18th – Sal Brizzi
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by newcomer Tony Yemn and graciously
accepted the cap. Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge was kind enough to parade
Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in
Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers.
I would appear that a good time was had by all. I would personally like to
thank Paul Hack, Graham Buckingham and Dick Braimbridge for stepping in and
covering for me on the day – Well done boys!
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Taylor-made triumph
at Green Valley
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 3rd June the Pattaya Golf
Society visited Green Valley for a stableford competition and found an
empty course in excellent condition under heavy skies. Buoyed by the
return of a few old friends the group got away before time and progress
was very good.
The heavy atmosphere and soft fairways made the course play long but
good scores were to be returned with Wichai Tananusorn setting the gross
standard for the day with eighty for 35 points. Craig Thomas posted 36
points for a share of second place and Robbie Taylor rediscovered his
form with an impressive 39 points for the win.
Tony Thorne, on his return to action, shared the ‘2’s pot with Robbie
Taylor after his fine effort on the ninth, Robbie’s coming on the
sixteenth.
Rabbi’s free beer was won by Russell Meiers and the Booby Bevy went to
Ken Grimes after a dismal display and the lowest points score. Green
Valley as usual did not disappoint and a good day was had by all.
Grimoldby brightens the gloom
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Burapha on Wednesday, 5th June, to play
a stableford event on the quality course which did not disappoint
despite heavy rain the day before and the threat of more on the day.
However, it came to nothing and the humidity and heavy cloud cover
stayed with the group throughout.
The allocated nines were A and B and with many golfers still “new” to
the course it was left to the older hands to lead the show. Thus third
place was shared by Mr Len and Swede Tomas Nilsson with 34 points with
the form man Robbie Taylor trumping them with 36 points for second. The
winner, Martin Grimoldby, played the course with aplomb, his long drives
making a mockery of the soft conditions and he ended with 37 points from
a quality best gross of 76.
Tomas Nilsson took the ‘2’s pot with a good effort on A6 and elsewhere
the Booby Bevy went to old friend Masashi Iizumi on his first round
back, playing his customary low scoring loosener after a few months of
golfing inactivity in Japan.
Rabbi’s non-winners free beer went to new member Kevin Cumming. What a
splendid golfing day Burapha had provided, despite the gloomy
conditions.
Colour of the day - Emerald groan
What should have been a very pleasant Friday at Emerald turned into a
nightmare on 7th June when the Pattaya Golf Society visited Emerald to
play a stableford event and found the course in a shocking state with
fourteen fairways scarified and bare for huge tracts, without so much as
a warning at check-in or any indication on the course that these areas
were GUR.
In truth there is probably not enough white paint in the whole of Ban
Chang to cope with the problem. No wonder the course was empty, and
empty it will probably remain for the next few months.
For the record, scores were Chris Walsh (35), Wichai Tananusorn (34),
Alan Flynn and Dave Plaiter (31). Masashi Iizumi took the ‘2’s pot for
his fine effort on fifteen.

Wylie triumphs on Phoenix return
PSC golf from Rendezvous Resort
Tuesday, June 4,Phoenix - Stableford
First off on Tuesday was the long-awaited return
for a game at Phoenix, where we had not played since last year. The Lake
& Ocean were the allotted combination, at a whisker over 6,200 yards
from the white tees.
After a scratch on the Lake 1st, it was Jeff Wylie (7) leading the way
with 38 points, well clear of local Phoenix resident Graham Briggs (25)
with 34. Jeff was striking the ball pretty well after his early hiccup
and also bagged 2 near pins, while Tom also got amongst the prizes.
Jeff
Wylie.
Thursday, June 6,Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Thursday was the quick return, with Khao Kheow A &
C re-visited after the previous week’s high rate of success there. Not
quite the case score-wise this week, but again a high proportion of
single figure golfers, with 6 players under 10 handicap.
It was our lowest marker, Paul Smith (2), showing how it should be done
with a creditable 37 points. He led marker Colin Quinlan (9) with 34,
while Jeff Wylie (7) snuck in on 31 points. Near pins were won by
Willem, Paul & Colin scoring 2.
Note: Rendezvous Resort, Restaurant & Bar plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with the bar hosting prompt presentations on both
days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies
& seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841
for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Scott reigns supreme at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 4, Khao Kheow – Stableford
The question when we were asked when we got
back was ’Did it rain?’ and the answer was yes, it absolutely poured
it down, and we got soaked. You tend to forget that it does chuck it
down here at times after months of hot weather, and you hope it will
not be on you, but we suspected it might be when we booked in and
were told that there were no carts allowed off the path as it had
rained for days on end at the course. However, we are always
optimistic.
So after booking in, off we went on the test for the day, the A & C
Nines. I suspected that was what we would play as the B Nine is dug
up at the moment. There is however a lot of progress and B9 looks
close to completion.
Back to the golf, and the A nine was soaked but we splashed on but
it soon became obvious that the storm clouds were gathering. As we
started A6 it started to rain and we soon had to make a dash for the
rest stop, which was packed. It rained really hard for quite a
while, but as soon as we were able we got underway again.

Brian Parish, Henry O’Brien and Mark
West.
The course by this time was soaked, but we had paid the green fee so
we battled on. It soon got hot and humid and underfoot was a bit,
well a lot, sloshy, but we did not have to rush as we found
ourselves behind a few five-balls. Still, the course was playable
and the greens not too bad, and as it was ‘lift clean and place’ we
could at least play with a clean ball.
It was a long round and we finished wet and a few were a bit upset
at the slow pace, still, a great day out. So into the changing rooms
and a good shower soon put us right for a bite to eat in the
restaurant. The food is pretty good here and the view is fine. Then
it was into the cars and back to Bert’s.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the presentation. In the A
Flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Max Scott with 38 points ahead of
Derek Brook in second with 37 points. Taking third was Brian Parish
with 36 points.
In the B Flight we saw the difference a difficult day on the course
can have and how it can affect the results. The scores in the B
Flight were not as good but you only have to beat the rest to win.
The winner was Daryl Evans with 32 points on count back over Geoff
Bracegirdle. In third was Mick Coglan with 30 points ahead of Max
Bracegirdle and Paul Alford.
Near Pins: Paul Sharples, Max Scott, Mashi, Brian Parish
Friday, June 7, Treasure Hill – Stableford
A small group gathered to go to the course and
with this being the ‘Low Season’ I am never surprised by how many
turn up: It ranges from overfull when players wake up, to just a few
when the majority decide to stop in bed!
One of the good things about a relatively small group is that it is
easy for the ‘organiser’ to run things. Also there seems to be a
lighter atmosphere, give me 3 or 4 groups anytime to 6 or 7 groups.
So into cars and off we went, to arrive and find that the course was
not packed out. So a quick change and onto the first tee.
This course is in good condition at the moment and has had a lot of
work done on it over the last few months. Several trees are where
they did not used to be and make a difficult course much harder.
However, the greens were not particularly fast on the day.
Round over and after a shower, it was into the restaurant which
produces good food at a good price. Then it was into cars and
realise on the way home that we had not had a rain stoppage all day,
lucky us!
Back at Bert’s and into the presentation and the scores showed that
the course had won. The winner with 35 points was Brian Parish ahead
of Henry O’Brien in second with 32 points. Mark West took third with
31 points on count back over John Harrison in fourth.
Then as is usual, we sat and had a few. T.T.F.N.

on the day in A and B Flights respectively. Pork chop was followed in the
senior flight by Peter ‘fluent in Thai’ Hynard who edged Victor the
inflictor on count back as Vic tidied up the flight.
B Flight’s three-way count back was quickly sorted out as Jean emerged top
dog and Tierney Clayton gained the second spot as Victor the inflictor
closed the flight.
JP Affray’s solid play for the month of May took the lead crystal cut glass
trophy for the golfer of the month award.
Tuesday, June 4, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Salvatore Brizzi (7) 34pts
2nd JP Maffray (14) 34pts
3rd Paul Hack (11) 33pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (23) 37 pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (20) 33pts
3rd Tom Gorey (20) 32pts
Tuesday found the society of to the damp, albeit imminently playable A & C
nines of the Peter W Thompson designed Greenwood Golf Club. The conditions
suited our Irish members down to the ground as Co. Dublin’s favourite son
Christy ‘good’ knight started his bid for the large font with a sizzling man
of the match 37 points (Ha - I can hear Mango from here). Mike the Welsh
Wizard was pleased with his second place podium finish but it took him a
count back to edge Christy’s mate and Co. Wexford man Tom Gorey.
A Flight had two 34 pointers from Salvatore Brizzi and the man on fire, JP
Maffray. Salvatore had the better of his mate on count back. The flight was
rounded out by the very likeable Aussie Paul Hack who was one stroke in
arrears.
No 2’s were recorded.
Wednesday, June 5, Burapha A & B - Stableford
1st Jim Reid (26) 34pts
2nd Rod Brown (18) 33pts
3rd Colin Davis (18) 33pts
The field is always a bit more modest on the second day of the society’s
weekly back-to-back features and this Wednesday was no exception.
Jim ‘I’m getting better’ Reid led the field with a top score on the day 34
points. Right on Jim’s well rounded heals were Rod Brown and Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis with their twin 33’s. The esteemed gentleman Rodney did what
most can only dream of, that is get one over the Donkey.
No 2’s were recorded again so it was a rollover on Friday.
Friday, June 7,Crystal Bay B & C – Stableford
A Flight
1st Max Scott (4) 38pts
2nd Bob Watson (3) 38pts
3rd JP Maffray (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jim Reid (26) 38pts
2nd Gerry Roche (18) 37pts
3rd Aiden Murray (23) 36pts
The week concluded with a trip to the well-maintained Crystal Bay near
Chonburi where both flight winners plus Bob Watson managed excellent 38
point returns. Max claimed top spot in A Flight via a count back over fellow
Aussie Bob who for some reason wasn’t all that bothered. The man of the
month, old friend JP Maffray, took the bronze three shots in arrears.
Jim was chased home in B Flight in one shot increments by Irishman Gerry
Roche and Aiden Murray.
Now here’s the reason Aussie Bob Watson was not to disappointed with his
cont back loss - Bob was the sole heir to a very healthy two game rollover
‘2’s pot
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Murnin on the mark
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, June 3, Phoenix (Mountain & Lakes)
- Medal
Dark clouds were gathering as we left Pattaya on the short drive to the
Phoenix course, but fortunately we appeared to have chosen the right
direction as the clouds were heading the opposite way, and we arrived at the
course in bright sunshine. Thunder could be heard in the distance during the
round, but no rain came our way and conditions remained very pleasant
throughout the day.

Barry Murnin.
There’s a lot of cosmetic work being done
around the course before the new owners take over in August, but the
fairways and greens are generally in good condition. The only complaint
today was that the greens on the recently reopened Lakes nine had not
completely recovered from recent coring, and were considerably slower than
those on the Mountain nine.
Barry (never accused of being “Mr. Consistency”) Murnin had one of his more
spectacular rounds, with four birdies and two 9’s on his card, but still
came home the winner with a net 69, four shots clear of second place man,
Reg Smart.
1st Barry Murnin (13) net 69
2nd Reg Smart (28) net 73
3rd Lee Butler (17) net 74
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, John Graham and Barry Murnin (2).
Wednesday, June 5, Khao Kheow A & C – Stableford
It wasn’t a day for the fainthearted today as grey
skies and persistent rain hung over Pattaya in the morning, and predictably
a number of fair weather regulars failed to show up at The Ranch. However
there’s always a small group of determined golfers who will set off in any
weather, in the knowledge that here in Thailand, the conditions can be
totally different just a few kilometers away.
As we drove up the 7 motorway optimism began to fade when we passed though a
heavy shower, but once again the golfing gods were smiling on us, and we
arrived at Khao Kheow to find the course dry and the car park almost empty.
We set off with no others golfers in sight in almost perfect conditions
(definitely the coolest day of the year so far) and the course and greens
were in great shape.
Geoff Parker and Barry Murnin had a tough battle all day, with Geoff
fighting off a late rally from Barry over the closing holes to hang on to
the winner’s place.
There wasn’t a drop of rain all day, and after the round all the golfers who
turned up agreed it had been a great day’s golf on a great course, and well
worth taking the risk of setting off in miserable conditions.
1st Geoff Parker (15) 33pts
2nd Barry Murnin (13) 30pts
Friday, June 7, Crystal Bay - B & C – Stableford
A delayed start today, as we were forced to wait on
the first tee for thirty minutes before teeing off behind another local
society. As expected, it turned out to be a long day playing behind a large
group, and most players were relieved to eventually get back to the
clubhouse after a round which took the best part of five hours.
The course was generally in good shape and the weather was fine, so it was
reasonable to expect that someone would shoot a high score, but in the event
the scoring was very tight.
Barry Murnin, Geoff Parker and Tony Robbins were all playing in the same
group and had a dingdong battle all day, eventually arriving on the 18th tee
with all three players level on 35 points. Standing on the green, each
player had a putt for par but Tony and Geoff both cracked under pressure,
Tony managing to three putt from 15 feet, and Geoff missing a three foot
putt for par! Barry Murnin also failed to make par but still took the
honours, winning on the count back ahead of Geoff.
Following the presentation back at The Ranch there was much discussion over
Barry’s newly found good form, which he attributes to slowing down his
swing, the purchase of a new driver, and chipping tips from Bernhard Langer
on the Golf Channel! Barry was generous enough to keep the beer flowing, as
the discussion became more animated, and yours truly is heading out to buy a
new driver this weekend in order to try and end the American dominance - but
I think I’ll give the Golf Channel tips a miss!
1st Barry Murnin (13) 37pts
2nd Geoff Parker (15) 37pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 36pts
Only three near pins were hit, all claimed by Barry Murnin, who narrowly
missed out on the chance of becoming only the third player in Bunker Boy’s
history to claim all four near pins in a single round.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our

Merion Golf Club’s East Course – home to this year’s US Open

It shares common boundaries with pristine back lawns of well-to-do
residents, a college, and a commuter rail line. The sixth green lies
within 150 yards of an 80yo church; its bells “comforting” golfers with
their melodious peals every 30 minutes. The course, all 110 acres of it,
is tiny when compared to the usual settings required for a modern-day US
Open. This year’s championship could not have been staged at Merion
without significant cooperation from locals.
The USGA’s rather brave decision to select Merion has a lot to do with
recognising the events history, along with the legacy provided by this
particular golf club. Merion has hosted more USGA championships (this
will be its 18th) than any other club in America. And it can certainly
boast many iconic moments in the game’s history, including this
celebrated shot of Ben Hogan, playing his renowned 1-iron approach on
the 72nd hole of the 1950 US Open.
This shot, played from 210 yards and into a stiff breeze, settled on the
green from where he two-putted to make par. It enabled him to enter a
three-way 18-hole playoff the following day, which he won.
What made the shot so appreciated at the time was the fact that just
sixteen months prior, Hogan survived a head-on death-defying crash with
a bus that shattered his pelvis. Doctors warned at the time that he may
never walk again, let alone play golf. Hogan’s performance that day (36
holes!) was made more meritorious due to what many close to him
described as his crippling pain.
The photo here, one of golf’s most famous, has long been recognised as
the perfect gift for that special someone who has had to battle against
overwhelming odds to achieve their goals. Pattaya golfer Stuart
Thompson, currently battling serious injuries in a Canberra hospital, is
a perfect case in point. For you, Stu.
The 18th fairway has a plaque marking the spot from where Hogan played
his 1-iron. It’s a given that during this week’s practise rounds many
pros will drop a ball nearby, and have a go. None of them would carry a
1-iron. They will probably be hitting 5-irons. That Ben Hogan, reckoned
by many noted authorities to be the purist ball-striker of all time,
needed a club four stronger than today’s pros, sums up the fear about
Merion – it has been shrunk by technology.
Traditionally the USGA sets up its Open courses such that the winning
score will be around par. Greenkeepers are given explicit instructions
on fairway width, length and thickness of rough and green speeds.
Merion’s fairways will be an average 23 yards wide. The rough will be
penal.
But will it work?
The course, a par-70 measuring 6,996 yards, is short by today’s
standards. Nine of the first 13 holes could provide pros the chance to
hit wedge into greens which will be slick – unless it rains. The last
five holes are tougher. Most will be hitting hybrids and irons off the
tees due to the lack of length and the need to avoid the rough.
All four previous Opens at Merion have been won by shot-makers, by
players who could shape the flight of those old golf balls around what
has long been regarded as a beautiful, charming and testing layout.
Merion is still known for its beauty and charm. It is hoped that
advances in ball and club technology have not put paid to the latter. We
are about to find out.
Who of today’s pros are best suited to such a layout? Who will win?
By the time this column is published the first round will be complete,
which makes this exercise a mug’s game, but hey, it’s fun. First, a
recap of things Merion:
· Short. Driver will mostly be left in the bag.
· Very narrow fairways. Rough will prohibit second shot to green.
· Greens hard and fast if the rain stays away. Favours good wedge
players.
· The winner will have best “fairways hit” statistics.
· Will suit “thinkers” known for their ability to grind.
There are many other factors one could consider, but limiting it to
these five, my top ten – with a view to William Hill odds as at 0735 on
Monday 10 June – would be:
· T Woods: 9/2 - His weakness stays in the bag. Four recent
wins and new GF!
· P Mickelson: 25/1 - Loves Merion and US Opens. Superb wedge
player.
· G McDowell: 28/1 - T13 and T2 in US Open since winning in 2010.
A grinder.
· J Rose: 28/1 - Leads Tour in driving (accuracy & length).
Eighth in GIR.
· L Donald: 33/1 - A hard and dry Merion should suit him
perfectly.
· J Furyk: 40/1 - Past champion who epitomises hard grinding.
· S Stricker: 50/1 - Renowned putter and wedge player. Short
suits.
· R Fowler: 66/1 - Had a 4-0 match play record vs GB&I in 2009
WC.
· T Clark: 80/1 - Likes short. Consistent GIR. USGA will hope
not.
· S Khan: 200/1 - Loved the way he qualified. Same as 2005
winner?
Go Merion!
Happy golfing,,

Wolfram warms as the ‘Iceman’ thaws
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with
staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
As predicted, the Iceman Kristinn Helgason started the slow thaw this week
and only managed to finish in 5th place today, Tuesday, June 4, with a score
of 33 points. However it is fair to say that his handicap was cut by 2
strokes after the last couple of weeks good scores.
Taking over the winner’s rostrum was Wolfram Kruger with a fine score of 37
points, which was equalled by John Bartley, but with a poorer back nine he
was pushed into second place. Bill Hewitt claimed third place alone with 35
points and in fourth was Sergio Volpi who scored 33 points, as did Kristinn,
but Sergio’s back nine was superior.
The weather pattern seems to be changing as is it worldwide. This time of
the year we expect blue sunny skies and cool nights. However the cloud cover
at the moment is sending threatening storms all around Phoenix, but mostly,
and thankfully, avoiding our little domain.
All three courses are now open and it has to be said that every week the
course gets better. With the expectation of new owners we are all optimistic
that in about one year’s time this course will be up amongst (if not) the
best in the area.
Our near pin winners today were Bill Hewitt, Patrick Browne & Mike Gerrard
(2).
Lucky draw winners (sponsored by our hosts The Relax Bar) were Harvey
Trewran (free massage), Werner Scharz (free drink) and Adriano Reale (50
baht).
Today also saw the start of our new long running competition set up and
sponsored by Mukesh Thakkar. It is called the M.T. Cup (Mukesh Thakkar or
empty cup). Mukesh has provided a superb trophy for the eventual winner,
which will be at the end of the year party (first week in Feb 2014).
Each month everyone’s score will be recorded and their best two of the month
(from Friday and Tuesday) will be added together. At the end of the year the
player with highest total points will be the winner and will also receive a
special high class restaurant voucher worth 2.000 baht. This same restaurant
is also giving a 1.000 baht voucher for each month’s winner as well.
Back to last week’s golf and on Friday, June 7, a meagre 32 points was the
best score of the day, recorded by both Mukesh Thakkar and Paul Sharples.
Mukesh had the better back nine so got the nod for first place.
We also had the three-ball team match to add the best two scores from the
three players together. Amazingly the team of Paul Sharples, Mike Gerrard &
Joris Goetschalckx just managed to win by one stroke from the trio of Steve
Gibson, Gerry Hughes & David Lusha, who in turn were one stroke better than
the team of Mukesh Thakkar, Granville Swanton & Harvey Trewarn.
Steve Gibson won 2 near pins, with Mukesh and Joris claiming one each.
The lucky draw prize of a free massage donated by our hosts was won again
this week by Harvey Trewarn. He will be worn away with all the massages he
keeps winning. The free drink went to David Lusha and the 50 baht to
Granville Swanton.
Sadly poor Gerry Hughes was the only player not to receive any award today.
All together now, Ah, shame!

New star at Beaver Bar golf
PSC golf from the Beaver Bar & Grill
As an average crowd arrived at the Emerald Golf Course
last Friday, June 7, under threatening skies, but all participants were able
to complete their rounds without any rain falling on them. The recent rains
are helping the greens to improve over the past sandings and the fairway
G.U.R.’s.
Long time player but not reaching the top spot before, was Roger Ison with
40 Stableford points to earn top honors for the day. Nearest to the pin was
won by Roger Coe.
All returned to the Beaver Bar for lunch, refreshing beverages and awards.
Larry again extends a big Thank You for all the support.
Russell rolls in to
take Hua Hin honours
IPGC golf from The Tara Court & The Links
Last week we decided to go to on a trip to Hua Hin to take advantage of the
cheaper green fee rates at this time of year. Golf in Hua Hin is usually
very expensive but at this time of year all the courses are giving good
discounts, which makes it reasonable.
We played Seapines, Banyon and Black Mountain and found all the courses in
excellent condition, especially Black Mountain. There was a debate as to
which was the best course and I think Black Mountain came out on top with
Banyon a very close second.

Russell Goldsworthy.
We were very lucky with the weather as we got very heavy rain both on the
way down on Monday evening and on the way home on Thursday evening, but for
the three days we played golf there was no rain and it was beautiful.
Russell Goldsworthy saw about our trip on the IPGC website and decided to
come from Australia especially for it as he had never played golf in Hua Hin
and what a good decision it was. Playing all three courses for the first
time he won both at Seapines and Black Mountain and also won the overall
over the three days.
We played Seapines the first day and Russell won with 37pts, followed in by
Russell Exley in second with 35 and Mark O’Callaghan third with 34. The
second day we played Banyon where Vincent Gras won with 35pts while in
second was Mark O’Callaghan with 34 and third was Russell Goldsworthy with
32. We left the best till last and played Black Mountain on the third day
and Russell Goldsworthy was again the winner with 38pts and Russell Exley
was second with 37, beating Frank McGowan in to third on a count back.
For the overall over the three days the winner was Russell Goldsworthy
(H/cap 4) with 107 pts, second was Russell Exley (9) on 101pts, and third
came Frank McGowan (15) with 98pts. Russell Goldsworthy and Russell Exley
shared all the 2’s between them.
We will be going back to Hua Hin again in August when the green fees will be
even cheaper so watch the IPGC website for details as numbers will be
limited.
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group and The Links play every Sunday, Tuesday and
Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratamnak
Rd and The Links on Soi Bukhaow around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s
or The Links or ring Joe on 089 249 1364 or John on 080 021 1034 and they
will book you in.

Cotterell’s carve up the spoils
The Billabong Bar Golf Society

Wayne Cotterell with wife Eng.
Wednesday, June 5, Green Valley -
Stableford
The rain didn’t stay away for our game at Green Valley
today - when we started it was raining and it only let up on the fourteenth.
It wasn’t that hard but it was a little uncomfortable. However, with four
groups we virtually had the course to ourselves.
Great to see Cottee back home and giving me some stick about the State of
Origin going to New South Wales. Just remember it was only the first game
and Queensland had to give you a chance!
Now back to golf, in third place today was Eng Cotterell with 34 points
while second went to Wayne Cotterell with 36 points. The winner was Paul
Sharples with a fine 37 points.
There were no ‘2’’s recorded today.
Friday, June 7, Plutaluang - Stableford
Playing our favourite loops at the Navy today - East and
South - fortunately there was a large tournament on West and North with a
shotgun start but there were not many people on our side, so it was a four
hour round. While the weather was overcast we got no rain at all, I think it
stayed around Green Valley and St Andrew’s by all accounts.
We were joined today by Peter Henderson, Brian Orr and Mike Phillip’s; Peter
just having a new knee fitted he was in some pain but persevered and had a
good day out.
Wayne Cotterell had another good day - scoring 42 points to take the
honour’s by four points over Mike Phillips on 38. The scores went downhill
from there with these two golfers being the only ones to break par.
The course was in great condition with only the odd skinny lie, all in all a
good day out.
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf with some friendly golfers, give
Bob a call on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar just off Siam Country Club
Road, looking straight down Lake Mabprachan.

Markku Tynell lights up Crystal Bay
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, June 3, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Having set off down the highway in good spirits and with
great expectations, a little after an hour later the whole group could
be found hunkered down under whatever shelter they could find as the
rain pelted down.

Markku Tynell.
But that was just the start, as the thunder crashed and rolled across
the fairways and lightning slashed through the whole course it became
obvious that just getting back to the clubhouse would be fraught with
real danger. So for the first time in a very long time, at least within
recent memory, the competition was called off prior to completion and
after a couple of hours wait in the clubhouse and the reimbursement of a
50% rain check on the green fee the sadder and wiser group returned to
The Haven to attempt to extract some pleasure from the day, which most
had seemed to manage by leaving time.
Wednesday, June 5, Greenwood A & C - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Russell Gilroy (15) 33pts
2nd David Grist (8) 31pts
3rd Trevor Edge (19) 30pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 30pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (12) 29pts
After the disappointments of the previous outing, there were again high
hopes among the players as they headed out to the first of two regular
visits in the month to one of the preferred courses of the low season,
where Greenwood was found to be, as usual, in tip top condition and very
competitively priced.

Russell Gilroy.
Unfortunately, following very heavy weather over the preceding days the
course played extremely long from the tee, putting scoring at a premium
and with the best of the day unable to get within two of handicap the
results became non-counting for upward review of handicaps.
The course was still indeed a credit to the green keepers who had
managed to present it in good condition against all the odds.
Russell Gilroy led in a tired looking group after edging out David Grist
on the last hole as David failed to score to add to two previous holes
where he had similar results on the back nine, while Russell powered in
with a better three points over the homeward stretch to win by two.
Trevor Edge added to his pleasure for the day with third place, together
with the addition of a few jingling bits in his pocket, as he took
advantage of the under performance by the Regimental Sergeant Major on
the day but he had had to win a count back over Terry Hodgkiss, which he
did with a better 17 to 15, leaving Terry in fourth.
Trevor Schirmer always seems to get a mention of late no matter what his
handicap and over whichever course is played, and he did it again with
fifth place another shot back.
Despite the difficulty of the course both 2’s pots were taken with David
Grist collecting the first division and Terry Hodgkiss the second
division.
Prior to the prize giving there were welcome backs for Russell Gilroy,
Trevor Edge and Andy Pedlar, the latter two who were also departing as
well, so there were farewells as well to add for them.
Friday, June 7,Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Markku Tynell (24) 42pts
2nd John Wood (24) 37pts
3rd Jens Gunnarsson (14) 36pts
4th Hal Hart (20) 36pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (12) 35pts
Following two fairly disappointing days again there was keen
anticipation that a least there would be one day to take some pride in
as the hopefuls looked forward to the open spaces of the B & C courses
of Crystal Bay. Despite the recent weather the course was in excellent
condition, it having benefitted from its exceptional draining qualities
and with the greens also in great condition, being flat and true, the
only players not to score well were those that had spent a little too
long at each of the drink stops.
Markku Tynell had a day to remember as he returned his best score ever
in Thailand after seven years of playing here, beating his previous best
by four shots, to take the top spot on a high scoring day. His great
round included ten three-pointers and not a single blob to mar a fine
round.
John Wood, whose regular appearances are helping him to become a more
consistent player, took second place after he returned his second best
score in the Land of Smiles but even if he could have matched his best,
he would have come up short against Markku’s outstanding effort.
Jens Gunnarsson started too slowly to be able to really pressure the two
ahead of him but his remarkable inward half of two over gross for 23
points ensured that he took third place in a count back over Hal Hart,
who dropped off the pace after a very promising start managing just 17
on the back nine and taking forth place.
Once again Trevor Schirmer, having claimed the longest drive once again,
popped up in fifth with a solid one over handicap return.
Back at The Haven there were several wolf whistles when Alwyne Burly
returned wearing what would probably be described as the worst
combination of a horizontal striped shirt and extremely loud check
patterned shorts that also managed to colour clash, claiming that he had
learned all his dress sense from his mum many years earlier. Following a
close vote he was allowed to remain in the bar as long as he remained
seated but warned as to his future appearance.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back For Bill Bainton,
taking time off from watching the ‘Welsh’ Lions on tour, and a farewell
for Jens Gunnarsson, returning to sea for a few weeks and Mike
Dabanovich returning to his regular sandpit to practice his bunker shots
for a month.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

An electric eclectic for all
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Hold the phone! Great shooting for Barry, Mashi and Phil.
Steve Ellison
First off to some important news: The Golf Club Kabinburi Road Trip is on for
July 9-10 so get signed up soon as we only have 16 places available.
Monday, June 3, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Jeff Cordeiro (9) 40pts
2nd Steve Little (6) 38pts
T3rd Paul Greenaway (8) 36pts
T3rd Geoff Doody (23) 36pts
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the competition know as an “eclectic”,
it is a fun comp where you play the same course for 2 days and take your best
score from each hole to get your “eclectic” score. This can lead to a lot of
pressure on the second day as those holes where you may have stumbled on day 1
are now even more important. Handy tip: Don’t forget to keep your scorecard from
the first day!
And so it was to be our Green Valley eclectic for early June with Pattaya’s
finest out in full force. Day one saw perfect weather and an immaculate golf
course in front of us. Phil greeted several ‘Darksiders’ who joined up with us
on the first tee and the game was afoot.
It really does help to start off this two-day comp with a half decent first
round, but this format can be full of surprises! 40 points is always hard to
beat, and Jeff Cordeiro scored just that. Four strokes better than his handicap
of 9 is a great round of golf, so well played Jeffrey!
That name Steve Little has been around for the last several weeks and once again
Stevie had a podium placing with 38 points for second. Paul Greenaway and Geoff
Doody shot to their handicap to tie for third to set the stage for Tuesday’s
second round decider.
Tuesday, June 4, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Mike Newbert (9) 39pts
2nd Steve Little (6) 35pts
3rd Jimmy Brackett (7) 34pts
The single digit handicappers took over the podium for today’s comp and left the
rest in their dust. Day two saw Mike Newbert (not even in the frame yesterday)
shoot his best and win the thing with a solid 39 points. Steve Little once again
took second in his stride while our old pal Jimmy Brackett, just back from the
Arizona sunshine, scored 34 for third place.
Jimmy ended up singing for his supper and treated us to a medley of songs (on
Gabe’s guitar) as the electricity was being torn up on Soi Buakhao and left us
in the dark. It was just like that scene from Titanic, and the band played on.
We all survived quite nicely, thank you very much, and the lights were back on
and Jimmy took a bow. Thanks buddy!
Eclectic Results
1st Steve Little (6) 49pts
2nd Mike Newbert (9) 45pts
3rd Phil Smedley (10) 40pts
I told you this type of comp can be full of surprises! Phil Smedley never
factored in any podium placings, yet for the comp he got away with third place
from out of nowhere! Great job Phil, and a heck of a comeback.
Mike fought hard but fell just short of Steve Little’s victorious 49pts, which
is great golf and we are all glad to see Steve leave on a high note after a
fortnight of fine shooting. All the best mate and see you in a few months with
your Monthly Medal shirt.
Thursday, June 6, Greenwood (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Phil Smedley (11) 39pts
T1st Mashi Kaneta (14) 39pts
3rd Barry Collier (8) 35pts
The reports were all raves about the condition of Greenwood, one of our
favourite golf courses in the area. What the heck got into Smedders? He started
the week out slowly and then ended it with a bang. Our own Captain Phil Smedley
took top honours with a terrific 39 points to end up a great week of golf. As a
special prize, he will have a newly painted Toyota minibus all spruced up to
drive the lads around our Pattaya golf course venues!
Congratulations to Mashi also with 39pts to share the win and Barry Collier who
finally got on the podium with 35.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer
“Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call 085 434

Father Ray Children’s Home attends
Chang-Everton Football Academy

The boys from the Father Ray
Children’s Home and Father Peter (second right) pose with officials from the
Chang-Everton Football Academy.
Derek Franklin
Each Saturday and Sunday morning more than five hundred youngsters attend the
free soccer coaching sessions at the ThaiBev Football Academy in Bangkok. Boys,
and a few girls, of all ages and from all sectors of Bangkok society arrive to
receive training sessions from experienced coaching staff.
ThaiBev, owners of Beer Chang, sponsors of the UK premiership team Everton FC,
as well as several Thai premier league teams, provide the training sessions for
free, and have done for the past nine years. In almost a decade more than twenty
thousand youngsters have registered for training and several have gone on to
play at a professional level in the Thai Premier League.
The founding of the academy, which is also known as the Chang-Everton Football
Academy, was one of the obligations of the Everton FC sponsorship deal with
Chang Beer. Each year Everton FC send officials and coaching staff to the
academy and the local coaches have worked together with the Everton FC staff to
provide those attending with the best and most up to date training techniques.

Showing off his soccer skills.
Boys from the poorest slum areas of Bangkok arrive on foot to
play alongside those who are delivered in the latest model of Mercedes car. But
once on the pitch there are no social divides, everyone is expected to work
hard, listen to what the coaches have to say and play together as a team.
Players are expected to be on time, be serious about taking part, show respect
to the coaches and also do well in their studies.
The soccer team from the Father Ray Children’s Home was recently invited to take
part in a training session. Leaving Pattaya before the sun came up, it took a
while to find the facility, but once there the boys were very impressed with the
facility, which includes several full size soccer pitches.
After several hours of non-stop coaching the boys were exhausted, but happy in
the knowledge they have gained new skills which they will put to good use the
next time they have a competitive match.
Everton FC have said that they would like to be the first English Premiership
team to have a professional Thai player, who knows, that first player may just
come from the Father Ray Children’s Home.
More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org
or email [email protected]

The coach made sure the boys put
their new skills to good use.

The boys even helped to collect the
hundreds of soccer balls at the end of the training session.

Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf Final
attracts entries from 12 nations

Tournament organizers and sponsors
pose for a photo following a press conference leading-up to the 11th
Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf Asian Masters Final, being held at Burapha Golf Club &
Resort from 12–14 June.
The 11th Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf Asian Masters Final is
currently being played at the Burapha Golf Club & Resort this week from 12–14
June. The tournament is the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf
Championships.
A total of over 80 Thai golfers who have won through seven qualifying rounds
held between September 2012 and May this year are competing for places in the
Mercedes-Benz junior golf team, which will line up against top Asian junior
golfers in the ZLW Cup at the Luxehills International golf club in Chengdu,
China later this year.
They are also testing their skills at Burapha against a record number of
overseas entries from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan and the USA.
The Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf Asian Masters Final is being played over 54 holes,
and comprises of both boys and girls events divided into 4 age groups, 12 and
under, 14 and under, 17 and under and 23 and under. Six Thai winners, one boy
and one girl from each age group, except the 23 and under category will be
eligible to play in the Mercedes-Benz junior golf team which will travel to
China in August. The travel expenses for the six golfers will be paid by
Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Limited. Winners in the 23 and under class will get
wild card entries into a Thai PGA or Thai LPGA Tour event.
Emphasis in the programme is placed not only on golfing skills, but also on
educational excellence as the Thai junior golfers in the qualifying rounds gain
bonus points for their grades at school. The higher the grade the more bonus
points they receive.
Komkrit Nongsawat, General Manager of Marketing and Communications of
Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Ltd said that “Golf enables us to approach key target
groups that we would not be able to reach to the same extent through other
sports. At the same time supporting programmes like the Mercedes-Benz Junior
Golf Championships also allows us to keep in direct contact with our customers
as over 50% of the participants in the championships are the sons and daughters
of Mercedes-Benz owners.”
The 11th running the Mercedes-Benz Junior Golf Championships has seen a better
than ever standard of golf, judging by the results from the seven qualifying
rounds. The fact that a record number of foreign golfers are contesting this
year’s final, highlights that the tournament has now established itself as one
of the leading international junior golf tournaments in the region.

Buriram pile on the misery for Pattaya United

Pattaya United predictably fell to their twelfth defeat of
the season when they were outclassed 3-0 by league leaders Buriram United at the
Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last Sunday.
Buriram’s Philippine international Javier Patino fired a brace of goals, the
first coming eight minutes before the break, following which he wrapped up
proceedings with a fierce shot into the top corner of the Pattaya net for his
second in the 70th minute. Five minutes later, Carmelo Gonzalez tapped home the
visitor’s third goal from close range to complete another miserable evening for
Pattaya’s Dolphin fans.
The win allowed Buriram to extend their lead at the top of the table to 4 points
after Muang Thong United, under the stewardship of new manager Winfried Schafer,
lost 1-0 at Bangkok Glass to a goal from Piyachart Tamaphan.
Meanwhile Chonburi FC kept up their pursuit of the top two with a 1-0 win over
Police United. Veteran striker Pipob On-mo scored the only goal of the game in
the 64th minute.
The Premier League takes a short break now for one weekend and on the return to
action, Chonburi will visit struggling Samut Songkhram on Saturday, June 22,
while a day later Pattaya United will take the long trip north to play Changrai
United.

Ping Pub 2 take out
Pattaya Midnight Cup

Ping Pub 2 receive the trophy after
winning this year’s tournament.
Thanachot Anuwan
The 2nd Pattaya Entertainment Midnight football tournament reached its
conclusion last month with the official closing ceremony being held on
Wednesday, May 29 at the Chang all-weather football stadium in central Pattaya.
Organized by the Pattaya Entertainment Business Club and City Hall, the
tournament was conceived to provide local football enthusiasts with an event
outside of their normal working hours, to encourage them to participate in sport
and stay away from vices and drugs.

Models take on VIPs in the match of
the day.
The tournament featured nightly 7-a-side soccer matches and
ran from May 8-23 featuring 22 teams. The eventual winners were the Ping Pub 2
team who collected the trophy and 50,000 baht in prize money while the
runners-up were the Muang Jumlong team who received a consolation prize of
30,000 baht. All trophies and awards were presented by local public officials
and dignitaries during the closing ceremony.
A highlight of the final evening was a fun game of football between the Pattaya
VIPs and the young Thai lady models team, with honours remaining just about even
at the final whistle.

BMX bikers take on Pattaya challenge

BMX racers take on the demanding PRC Tower Boat Circuit
in Pattaya, Sunday, June 2.
Vittaya Yoondorn
Round 5 of the Fisherman’s Friend BMX Thailand Championship 2013 took place
at the Pattaya PRC Tower Boat Circuit on Sunday, June 2. Narong Klinsurhai won
the title after beating out a fellow Thai national-team rider in the final race
of the five-round competition.
Only four points separated Narong from Jakraphet Witchana going into the final
adult mountain-bike race but the contest between the two was decided when
Narong, after trailing Jakraphet from the start, made a dramatic hill jump to
pass his rival before the finish line.
Begun in Saraburi Jan. 6, the Fisherman’s Friend competition attracted 300 male
and female entrants in categories ranging from riders under eight years old to
over 40. The competition’s second round also was held in Pattaya on March 10.
Adm. Weerakul Thongma, director-general of the Thai Cycling Association, and
Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit opened the final round, with the men’s and women’s
adult races taking top billing.
In the men’s race, Punyapol Sornkla placed third following Narong and Jakraphet.
In the women’s adult mountain-bike category, Nisha Prasertsree of the
Fisherman’s Friend team placed first, Duangkamol Thongmee from Red Line-Bangkok
Sports School took second and Macrider’s Thassaporn Khaosuwan third.
In the much-watched girls age 13-14 event, Pornsawan Jaidee won the final race
after Pornpipol Hothong fell in the fifth-round face-off, but Pornpipol still
managed to hold onto her championship lead and take the overall title.

Happy winners with their trophies.

Spectacular action as riders fly through the air.
