Chonburi Hospital is collaborating with Chulalongkorn
University Hospital to raise awareness of Thalassemia blood disorders.
Sasithorn Preechawit, vice president of Chonburi Red Cross, Dr. Kesada
Jansawang, deputy director of Chonburi Hospital, and Dr. Pranee
Sujaritjan of Chulalongkorn Hospital met with Chutikorn Phunzup,
president of the Thalassemia Club of Thailand and affected members in
Chonburi May 7.
The Thalassemia Foundation of Thailand and Chonburi Red Cross organized
the awareness campaign, which is the first to be held outside Bangkok.
Each year 20-30 patients provide information to the public on the
disorder, with plans to expand promotion to Trat, Prachinburi,
Chantaburi and Rayong.
Thalassemia covers a number of genetic blood disorders caused by the
weakening and destruction of red blood cells. Those affected by the
syndrome make less hemoglobin and red blood cells, leading to anemia,
iron overload, pneumonia, bone deformities and cardiovascular illnesses.
Treatment ranges from drugs to frequent transfusions. In the promotion
effort, doctors can prescribe treatment and offer blood tests to couples
to determine if Thalassemia could be passed down to offspring.
The press conference wrapped with Sasithorn presenting gifts to 30
children affected by Thalassemia. (CPRD)
