Chonburi authorities block illegal chemical dump site

Deputy Gov. Adisak Thepass.
Chonburi officials have blocked off a Banbung District pit dug to
illegally dump chemicals and will test area residents to check for toxic
exposure.
At a May 7 meeting, Deputy Gov. Adisak Thepass said a pit measuring 40
meters long, 80 meters wide and 20 meters deep had been excavated on a
tract of land in Mabphai Sub-district’s Moo 2, presumably by Chonburi
factories or waste companies hired to dispose of industrial waste.
Residents had complained about the pit, which was filled with hazardous
chemicals, citing the foul odor and health risks.
The Mabphai government, however, didn’t clean up the chemical spills.
Instead they surrounded it with 2,600 bags of cement to prevent spread
of odors while waiting for the substances to solidify.
In the interim, authorities will offer health checks and blood tests to
area residents to test for exposure. (CPRD)
