PSC Sea-Fishing Reports
Dave, an occasional visitor
from UK, with some of his catch.
Saturday 16th Feb provided ideal conditions for
sea-fishing; overcast with a slight breeze and only a little swell. It also
turned out to be another barracuda bonanza, with 8 participants catching 32
of these lovely fish between them. Everybody caught a few, with Phil and
Adrian getting 5 each. Phil also caught a small “Grey”, a few

snapper, and many grouper and decent sized pla daeng, so
he and Nat went home well pleased with their day’s sport, as did everyone
else.Given the news of such plentiful barracuda, it was 8 very optimistic
fishermen who set out on Tuesday 26th, but although the fish were still
around, they weren’t biting as eagerly as 10 days previously, and two or
three of us didn’t catch any of them. Nevertheless, a few came aboard and
most of us went on to catch a decent quantity of very good-size snapper, as
well as a couple of our favourite grey sweetlip cod.
John H was the most
successful of the day, with a bag of around 15 kilos
There are still a few places on our scheduled trips for March, on Tuesday
12th, Saturday 16th and Tuesday 19th, after which the boat is out for its
annual lay-up for a couple of weeks. Bookings can be made via
www.pattayasports.org/ or
phone John O’Neill on 085 391 7045.

Top flight misery at Monthly Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Feb. 25, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-19)
1st Alwyne Burley (16) 39pts
2nd Phil Groves (7) 36pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (18) 36pts
4th Graham Johnson (8) 35pts
Division 2 (20+)
1st Seppo Sadeharju (26) 38pts
2nd Hal Hart (24) 37pts
3rd Torild Lossius (33) 36pts
4th Markku Tynell (26) 34pts
Alwyn Burley.
With the high season still in full swing it was off to the Emerald with
enough hopefuls to require two divisions, although as expected the lower
handicaps did not relish the conditions where ‘lift and place’ in the
fairways is a required local rule to make up for the general condition of
the fairways. The cut came at an unusually high 20 and above for the second
division.
With some of the other underfunded courses also suffering from a shortage of
good green-keeping knowledge and application, it would no doubt benefit a
few of them if they banded together to employ a real expert who could direct
and control the use of available equipment and staff to improve the overall
presentation of the courses for the benefit of all. This would surely lead
to an improvement the number of green fees taken up each day.
Mike Korney.
In the first division Alwyne Burley, now seemingly free of the commercial
worries of the recent past and playing with a new found freedom, once again
ensured a further reduction in handicap to what is now something like four
shots lower since joining the club just over a year previously. He recorded
a three under handicap return to see off the challenges of Phil Groves and
Trevor Schirmer, who had to be separated by a count back. Phil won the count
back with a better 13 to 11 after they had tied the nine at 19 apiece.
Graham Johnson slipped into fourth spot whilst making his last appearance
with the group before returning to the UK for his summer break.
The second division was dominated by Seppo Sadeharju, having a rare day in
the sun, with a two under return that just edged out Hal Hart into second
place. Hal had been practicing his winner’s speech throughout the minibus
trip back to the presentation only to be disappointed by Seppo’s late return
to the scorer’s table. Torild Lossius finished with a solid level handicap
round for third as Markku Tynell, who obviously learned a lot from watching
the recent ladies Honda tournament, even to the extent of dropping thee
shots on the final hole, ended the day in fourth spot at two over handicap.
Neville Duncan swept the first division ‘2’s pool with one each on the 13th
and 15th holes and strange but true Alwyne Burley duplicated the feat in the
second division on the same two holes.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Andy Pedlar,
Mark Ward, John Hayes, James Hawley, Peter MacKenzie, Neville Duncan, Frank
Dunstan and the ATM on a special charity run down from Udon Thani in the
form of Trevor Edge. There were also fond farewells for Oili and Rainer
Helling returning to Finland after wintering in the sun.
Wednesday, Feb. 25, Pattana C & A - Monthly Medals
Division 1 (0–15)
CSS 76 NC (white tees)
1st Neville Duncan (10) net 79
2nd Gerald Decio (15) net 81
3rd James Hawley (0) net 81
4th Peter Skinner (9) net 81
Division 2 (16+)
CSS 72 (yellow tees)
1st Mike Korney (20) net 68
2nd Trevor Schirmer (18) net 70
3rd Al Rolnik (19) net 76
4th Johnny Clements (24) net 78
Neville Duncan.
With the group unable to get reserved tee times at an early enough time at
Phoenix for the number of players wanting to compete in the monthly medals,
due to leaving the booking too late, the month’s medals were contested over
the equally challenging Pattana C and A courses starting on the long and
tough C nine.
Both courses were in top condition and it was the length and wind conditions
that did for the first division over the par 73 layout that measured 6700
plus yards on the day with the wind over the closing holes directly into the
player’s faces. With no player getting within the required “two of
handicap”, the CSS for that division went out to 76 and became non-counting
to boot.
Rod Crosswell.
The most successful player in the first division was disappointed to return
a net six over but was surprised to find that it was enough to win by two,
thus ensuring a first medal for Neville Duncan to carry back to Sydney and
add to the trophy cabinet. Gerald Decio won a three-way count back for
second place with a 39.5 back nine as James Hawley placed third after a
gross 41 (net 41) and Peter Skinner took fourth after being six strokes
better over the A course than the C, but as count backs are always over the
back nine on the card no matter in which order they are played, he had to be
content with an honourable mention instead of second spot.
The second division, played from the shorter yellow tees measuring slightly
over 6300 yards, fared far better in the scoring with Mike Korney winning
his first ever medal with an excellent four under return that pushed Trevor
Schirmer down to second. Trevor must have thought that his two under would
be good for the win on the day but was unlucky to find Mike in such fine
form. Al Rolnik’s three over was a solid performance, given the weather
conditions, and enough to take third ahead of Johnny Clements in fourth.
With the course off the whites playing so hard it was surprising that there
were any 2’s at all but in fact there were three shared by Jim Slattery,
Gerald Decio and Phil Groves whilst Andy Pedlar slipped in the lone one in
the second division to sweep the pool.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Gerald Decio and
Erik Donnestad who many will remember from the 1970 World Cup of Golf when
he represented Norway in what was then a four player team event.
Friday, March 1, Phoenix (Mountain & Lakes) - Stableford
CSS 75
Division 1 (0-18)
1st Rod Crosswell (14) 37pts
2nd Alan Hanlon (13) 33pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (18) 30pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (15) 29pts
Division 2 (19+)
1st Torild Lossius (33) 38pts
2nd Don Everett (22) 35pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 34pts
4th Trevor Edge (19) 33pts
At last a new month and back onto Phoenix where it was once again a joy to
play on one of the area’s best conditioned and maintained courses. With the
wind being a major factor only one player managed to meet the criteria set
for the par 72 Mountain and Lakes courses and the CSS moved out by three to
75, although the day remained counting for handicap adjustments.
The first division was led in, by half a street, by Rod Crosswell to be the
only counting player to equal or better par with a one under return, being
his best for over six months. Alan Hanlon took second place comfortably
three ahead of the in-form Trevor Schirmer who in turn was one in front of
Shuichi Kodaka in fourth spot.
Playing in her last competition prior to returning to Norway, Torild Lossius
added to her day’s prizes by taking the second division’s top place by three
clear after a very nice round following her third place earlier in the week.
Don Everett’s one over handicap round was good for second place with fellow
club mate Terry Hodgkiss in third a shot back. Trevor Edge’s three over
handicap round, which earned him fourth place, was his swan-song before
returning to the arid wastelands of the North Thailand with his pockets
unusually jingling after a very lucrative few rounds with his old army chums
and a couple of dupes from Hertfordshire.
Torild Lossius and Trevor Edge shared the second division 2’s pool whilst
James Hawley and Neville Duncan did the same in the first division.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Danny Greer and Rod
Crosswell.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at

Gaussa gets the nod
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Dick Warberg (right) presents
the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award to Mike Gaussa.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 26, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
This is a day you try to get a lift with a friend, as it is the most distant
course we play on a regular basis. However, we do have a brave few who
actually like the drive, they are checked regularly for insanity. Normally
the drive to a course is not too bad but this trip does get a bit busy as we
drive both ways at peak hours.
Still the drive there was not too bad and we were soon changed and on the
first tee on time. However it was packed, it is difficult for the course not
to let certain players jump in, so being ever inventive it was not hard to
get the starter to let us tee off on the tenth.
Tuesday’s top four back at
Bert’s.
We got away sometime near normal time and the course was
in its usual fine condition, however there was a residue of sanding on the
greens that really should have slowed them down. It seems however that they
were still really fast and tricky. Since the rework the course seems to have
got much tougher and on a day such as this, when it was very windy, the
scores would be low.
We will not talk about the drive back, suffice to say the passengers in the
car, scribe included, noticed the trip seemed very quick. Probably because
most were asleep, however the driver was fine, I am glad to say. So we got
back to Tropical Bert’s in good time.
So to the results and on this day we also had the MBMG Group Gofer of The
Month award to hand out, and the day’s results would have a big impact on
the outcome. The winner on the day was Mashi Kaneta with 37 points on count
back over Mike Gaussa in second. We then had a count back on 36 points that
saw Mark West in third, John Hackett in fourth and Graham Buckingham just
missing out.
So to the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month, and it was a tight finish, however
by coming second on the final day we saw Mike Gaussa just ahead. Well done
Mike. T.T.F.N.

A long and winding road to Treasure Hill
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Wednesday, Feb. 27, Green Valley -
Stableford
Our normal trip down the 36 to Green Valley and only a small field today as
there were some cancellations - one being Capt Bob who got knocked off his
bike by a dog on his way home Tuesday night, but not to worry the bit of
bark will grow back soon.
Ives Philibert (left) with Stan
Stoker.
Thanks to outpourings of sympathy from Arab - his
starting comment was, “Been doing some renovations?” and his big brother
Lumpy said, “Hi Rudolph, how did you get skin off your nose with that fat
gut?” Thanks guys - it all adds to the fun here at the Billabong Golf Club.
Now down to golf and the course was as usual in grand condition except for a
few holes where they had watered them and it was like putting through a
lake. Thanks very much to Stan Stoker for looking after the golfers today -
much appreciated mate.
Coming in forth was Bob Finley with 31 points, beaten on a count back by
Ives Philibert, also on 31. In second was Martin Kingswood, just back from a
safari in Africa with Suzi and John Lawton, with 35 points and first was
Stan Stoker on 36.
Again there were no ‘2’s.
Friday, March 1, Treasure Hill - Stableford
What started out as 3 four-balls ended up as three 3-balls with
Gary Hogg, Wayne Cotterell, and their passenger (whom shall remain nameless)
getting slightly bushed on the way to Treasure Hill. When I was called the
boys were passing a large power station, which in living here for 10 years I
have never seen before on the 331.
After much assurance that they were definitely on the 331, I said a good
idea would be to pull into a service station and ask the attendant. All was
silent for about 10 minutes. I called back and yes, they were on the way
just passing a big store called Makro. I said you should have kept going,
you would have been in Soi Dao soon and had a really good day out!
Anyway the lads playing were looked after by Greig Ritchie - many thanks
mate! It was a 4 hour round but alas some played from the yellow and the
other’s played from the white tees. One ‘2’ was recorded by Chris Dodd and
he also won the day with 41 points. I might add that he got his ‘2’ on the
second hole from 213 yards out - a great effort just to get the ball on the
green! Coming in second was Willie Dunlop with 36 points.
Note: If you would like game with some friendly golfers, come and join us at
the Billabong Golf Club. We are located just off Siam Country Road before
you go under the arch to Siam Old Course. Turn left and we are 200 yards on
your right or call Bob on 082 204 3411.

Tuesday, Feb. 26, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
With it being a Thai Public Holiday on the Monday we opted for the Tuesday
and found out on Monday afternoon that there had been a mistake with our
booking so instead of playing at Crystal Bay we were booked in at Mountain
Shadow. No dramas for us as it is another of our favorite courses and it
didn’t worry any of the 22 golfers that were signed up for the day.
We were happy to welcome Adrian Schmidt from Perth in Western Australia, Bob
King from Somerset in the UK, Danny Williams from Wales and Dave MacNamara &
Julian Fitzgerald from Ireland.
Departing the GS right on time at 8.15 am we arrived at the course just 43
minutes later to find it fairly deserted which enabled our first group, a
three-ball to tee off 18 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.42 am. This really
is a great time of year for golf as the weather was perfect, not too hot
with a gentle breeze and as usual the course was looking terrific with lush
fairways and well prepared greens which were fairly quick at times.
The two-ball in front of us quickly disappeared and we breezed through the
front nine in one hour & fifty two minutes which included a drink stop after
the sixth green. Our good pace continued on the back nine and although it
become fairly hot when the breeze practically disappeared our full round was
completed in the excellent time of three hours & forty eight minutes. An
extremely enjoyable day on a great course with fine company.
Frank Donnelly, Duangjai Tusagad
& Peter Blackburn.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th &
18th greens.
It was a very close contest in the A Grade with just one point separating
the four placegetters and with 2 golfers on 36 points it was your writer,
Peter Blackburn (21 point back nine) who took top spot on a count back from
Ebrahim (18 point back nine) in second place. One point further back there
were another two on the same score which saw the count back giving third
place to veteran Don Richardson (18 point back nine & 11 points on the last
6 holes) from Frank (Paco) Waterhouse (18 point back nine & 10 points on the
last 6 holes) in fourth place.
It was once again Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad (22 point back nine) who won the B
Grade with 37 points in a count back from JC Lhoste (20 point back nine) and
I’m sure one of Kae’s biggest fans, JJ, back in Ireland, will be delighted
as he is following her progress intently. In third place came Kae’s partner
Roy “Plums” Dayton with 35 points and one point back in fourth place was
Pierre Dardenne.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was narrowly won
by Frank Donnelly who accepted the cap in fine spirit.
Thursday, Feb. 28, The Emerald – Monthly Mug/Stroke
It was that time of the month again when we get to play for the ever-popular
Growling Swan Monthly Mug and after originally having a full field of 32 it
was reduced to 29 with a late scratching due to sickness and a couple who
just didn’t bother showing up.
We were happy to welcome Tony Olcorn returning from Brisbane, Australia,
Nolan Wise from Tasmania and Harry “HTH” Wszola from Queensland, Australia.
It was unfortunately time to say farewell to Frank Waterhouse who in the
next few hours was off back to the North East of England after a few months
here in Pattaya. There was of course a strong showing from Peter Grey & his
Growling Swan delinquents who were not at all deterred by the thought of a
stroke round at the challenging Emerald Golf Course.
We had been allocated a later than usual tee time so it meant a “sleep in”
for most and we managed to depart the GS right on time at 9.00 am and
proceeded south, reaching the golf course 52 minutes later after
encountering fairly busy traffic along the way. Not surprisingly, although
arriving almost one hour before our 10.48 am tee time we were invited to tee
off practically straight away and our first four-ball teed off 21 minutes
ahead of schedule.
The weather was fine but hot with very little wind and the course was in
very good shape so there were no excuses apart from the toughness of the
venue. We proceeded at a good pace although a couple of drink stops were
necessary as it became increasingly hotter and we completed our full round
in the reasonable time of four hours & twenty five minutes.
As the scores came in afterwards it was obvious most had struggled with this
stroke event with the exception of one golfer who stood out from the rest of
us.
In addition to the Monthly Mug Winner we were able to have 2 grades with
five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for
19 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first
putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
It was a no contest as far as the Mug winner was concerned and continuing
her fine form, albeit with a rapidly reducing handicap it was Duangjai “Kae”
Tusagad who won the coveted trophy with a fine net 69.
Coming first in A Grade on a count back with 2 golfers on net 75 it was Mike
“Hunter” Gosden (net 37 back nine) who nudged the departing Frank “Paco”
Waterhouse (net 40 back nine) into second place. In third place was Paul
Hack with net 76 and another count back was required to determine fourth &
fifth resulting in Ken Blinco (net 37 back nine) just ahead of Alain
“Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (net 40 back nine) with both having net 78’s.
In the B Grade it was Roy “Plums” Dayton who was the winner with a net 75
followed by Graham “Grunter” Buckingam in second spot with net 76. In third
place came Geri Crilly with net 81 followed by Patrick Poussier in fourth
place. In a count back for fifth it was J C Lhoste net 39 back nine) who
edged out Tony “Spaggoni” Olcorn (net 48 back nine) with both on net 84.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was easily won by Nolan Wise who accepted the
cap in fine spirit and wore the cap well into the night. Just out of
hospital a couple of days ago after a back operation we were happy to see
big Ken Bernek pay us a visit back at The Growling Swan for presentations
and he kindly paraded Deefa the Dog who collected many donations for the
needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan crew, including fines
for intestinal indiscretions from Peter Grey & Adrian Schmidt.
I thanked Mine Host Peter Grey (once again deliriously happy at not winning
the NAGA) for sponsoring the Monthly Mug and also providing a delicious
chicken supper. It was another great day, very well supported and we look
forward to next month’s “Mug Day” at Greenwood.
Note: Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya welcomes
golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers
and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The
Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with
transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information please

Stubbs starts off the month in winning style
PSC golf from the Beaver Bar & Grill
Geoff Stubbs (center) poses
with staff at the Beaver Bar & Grill.
We had 12 hardy souls to venture out to Emerald Golf Club
last Friday to start out the month of March, hoping we would not encounter
any of our high season visitors. The weather was quite nice with a slight
breeze and the course was in good shape.
After the rounds of golf, all returned to the Beaver Bar for lunch and a few
cold refreshments. Closest to the pin was awarded to Dennis Willett and the
top prize with 39 points went to Geoff Stubbs.
We hope to see many more players here with us every Friday.
Grindvold takes Gross honours at Pattana
Pattaya Amateur Golf Series - February
The second event of the PAGS series took place on the
27th February at Pattana Golf Club & Resort and was another fantastic day.
97 players took part on this challenging golf course and it seemed like the
course had won with very few players breaking their handicap. However, as
the day went on some better scores started to roll in as the wind dropped
but still the best of the day was just 39 points.
Gross Winner Jack Grindvold
(right) accepts his prize.
We played the more popular A-B courses and Shaun Merirman managed to get an
eagle 4 on the par 6 to claim nearest in 4. Other notable spot winners were
Paddy Somers near pin on the 8th where the ball was heading for the water
but skimmed off to end up the closest and Ae Sutton who drained a monster
putt on 17 to claim the longest putt.
We had a lot of new low handicapped golfer join us this month, which I hope
is due to the Gross Order of Merit that we have introduced but none of them
could get close to a very solid round by regular participant, Jack
Grindvold, who shot 75 Gross.
In flight C we had a popular first time winner in Nick Creasey who has
played in the PAGS every month since the start of the series. This was
clearly Nick’s day as he made lots of putts for a great score of 36 points
to take the C Flight. Steve Donahue just crept into flight B with his 11
handicap to claim this flight and flight A went to a newcomer, Andre Olsen

Magnusson makes hay
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Leif Kirkgaard and Dave
Richardson.
Tuesday, Feb. 26, Plutaluang -
Stableford
It was off to the Thai Navy Plutaluang golf course today - 40 minutes
en-route, a quick check-in by the ever friendly reception staff and off to
see the starter where we found out that our booked nines (west and north)
had a Faldo youth competition. Instead we went to the E1 tee and were
accommodated in a timely fashion.
We teed off about 10 minutes late under very sunny skies and a cooling
breeze. The course was in great condition with the usual slowish greens.
Back in the clubhouse after a quick round of 4 hours and 25 minutes welcomes
went out to Henrik Aagaard and Soren Gottschaick, both from Denmark, and
goodbyes were said to Susanne and Svend Gaarde, back Denmark.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and Leif Kirkgaard took the A
flight with 33 points. Kjeld Ravn was second on 30 points, Soren Gottschaick

Thursday, Feb. 28, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
Treasure Hill was the game today and we got off the first tee 5 minutes
early under partly cloudy skies and hot conditions. We were behind many
groups of Thai golfers who were playing in 5 or 6-balls but fortunately they
were all using carts. The course on the day was in fine condition.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 5 hours (seemed longer), welcomes
went out to Chris Chilton, working for the US Navy in Sasebo, Japan, Bent
Moeller, back from Denmark, and Toshihara Kamikura from Japan. We also bid
farewell to Ulla and Kjeld Ravn, going back to Denmark.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and a full load of pins. Elias
Magnusson won the A flight with a fine 38 points, Mashi Kaneta was second
with 36 2 points behind and Richard Kubicki and Lotte Boskov completed the
podium.

Clint’s for the taking

3rd John Kilohan (20) net 70
Near Pins: No 4 Graham Holmes, No 9 Eddy Beilby, No 12 Thomas
Myborg, No 16 Barry Oats.
You can always get a rise out of a Brit or a Yank if you initiate a
conversation regarding the proper name for the Major that is hosted
annually by the Royal and Ancient. However, there is unanimity that the
annual slug fest sponsored by Lewiinski’s and the dream child of the
former owner, which is contested over four days, over a seven day
period, is simply known as “The Open”. Ok, well maybe not unanimity but
be that as it may, 39 players showed to contest an event that continues
to grow in popularity.
For those unfamiliar with the format of the event a brief word; all four
rounds are played on the tacit home of the society, Green Valley. The
first two days are stroke play, with the top fifty per cent and ties
going on to days 3 and 4 of stroke play, after a day’s rest. Those that
felt the lash of the cut line clean their slate and play a 2-day
stableford.
On Day 1, Aussie Clinton Hazlett broke from the gate quickly with a
fabulous net 60 and a three stroke lead over Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby’s
excellent return. Colin ‘the Donkey Davis’showed he was up to the
challenge as he returned a great net 65. Gary Roche net 67 and the
favourite of many, Dave Shelton net 69, were followed by previous
winner, nice guy Gally Blackburne. But it is not a one day tournament.
Monday, Feb. 25, Khao Kheow C&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Dave Shelton (8) 35pts
2ndEd Wyckoff (10) 31pts
3rd Peter Hynard (13) 28pts
B Flight
1st Ayoko Pueschi (23) 40pts
2nd Brian Cooper (26) 38pts
3rd Reg McKay (15) 31pts
A relatively modest group due to the running of the Lewiinski’s Open
took on the well-conditioned Khao Kheow. Ayoko Pueschi had a sparkling
40 points for person of the match and top spot on the B Flight podium.
Brian ‘mini’ Cooper, playing some exciting golf, filled the silver spot
with a fine 38 points. Two players were mixed on 31 points and the count
back sorted it out favorably for Reg ‘Bionic eye’ McKay while Erwin
Haflinger was the hard luck odd man.
Dave Shelton came straight off the podium steps of Sunday’s first round
of the Open and stepped right into the klieg lights. His35 points in the
senior flight gave him a four point advantage on the day over Ed ‘our
man in the white house’ Wyckoff. Peter Hynard gratefully accepted the
bronze on 28 points.
Dave Shelton and Brian Cooper split the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, Feb. 26, Green Valley – The Open (Day 2)
A Flight
1st Clinton Hazlett (12) net 70
2nd Thierry Petrement (11) net 70
3rd Ed Wyckoff (10) net 72
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) net 67
2nd Mark Bonner (14) net 71
3rd Nick Odnoral (17) net 73
C Flight
1st Gerry Roche (20) net 67
2nd Thomas Myborg (20) net 72
3rd Lew Szigligeti (19) net 73
Day 2 and the cream began to rise as Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby followed
his 63 with a blistering co-day’s best net 67 for a two day total 130 to
move into joint leader on the score board. First day winner Clint
Hazlett added a steady net 70 to his first day 60 to keep his share of
the lead.
Eddy and Clinton were 4 strokes clear of the ever-improving Gerry Roche.
The Donkey kept his hopes alive as he added a net 73 to his first day
net 65. Thomas Myborg and Thierry Petrement trailed the Donkey by five
shots with Ed ‘our man in the White House and Broad more Bob a further
shot in arrears.
Back at Lewiinski’s the main news was that the cut was 145. And so it
was that 10 with scores of 145 or less went on to play a day three and
day four of medal competition and 30 or more girded their loins for two
days of Stableford.
The day’s near pins were shared by Clinton Hazlett, Ed Wyckoff, Bob
Newell, Ranay Singh and Nick Odnoral.
Wednesday, Feb. 27, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Dave Shelton (8) 38pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (7) 31pts
3rd Mark Watson (6) 31pts
B Flight
1st Pen Caruthers (13) 35pts
2nd Billy Britton (15) 34pts
3rd Matt Cronin (14) 33pts
C Flight
1st Colin Davis (19) 34pts
2nd Thomas Myborg (20) 33pts
3rd Mick Coghlan (20) 29pts
Dave Shelton, one of the more accomplished players to come from the
U-S-A, and certainly one of the most consistent golfers in Pattaya over
the many years he has played here, was his usual quiet self as he led
the monkeys and the gang into the barn. Dave was also the only player to
better par with a splendid 38 points. Dave was nonplussed by the 6,495
yards as he left second and third place to Kevin ‘you know who’ (didn’t
take long did it ) and Mark Watson as they out pointed Conner Doyle in a
three-way count back.
The high handicappers wilted in the heat and humid conditions, as the
highest representative of the 13 plus handicappers was C Flight’s the
Donkey with 34 points. Thomas Myborg took the silver a shot adrift, as
Mick Coghlan closed the flight.
The B Flighters were closely grouped with Pen Caruthers taking pole
position with 35 points. Billy Briton and Matt Cronin were stringed out
in one stroke single increments.
Dave Shelton and Leslie Cobban split the 2’s pot.
Thursday, Feb. 28, Green Valley – The Open (Day 3)
A Flight
1st Clinton Hazlett (12) net 69
2nd Francis Goyons (9) net 70
3rd Colin Davis (19) net 71
A Flight Plate
1st Pat Regan (12) 36pts
2nd Mikko Mutanen 35pts
3rd Terry Mangan (14) 35pts
B Flight Plate
1st Adam Oyston (18) 42pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson (17) 37pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (22) 35pts
Day 3 - Ah moving day! Like a boxer coming off the ropes, Aussie Clint
Hazlett came roaring back and threw a net 69 at it. He turned a joint
second day lead onto a massive 12 point advantage just like that. The
suddenly human Eddy the Eagle, who was joint leader, had the wheels come
off big time but amazingly still left the Eagle in second spot with 201.
Irishman Gerry Roche and the Donkey were a distant joint third on 214.
All over? You never know!
In the Plate, Adam Oyston led the field on the first day with a
resounding 42 points. Adam was five shots clear of Brian ‘the
unbalanced’ Wilkinson, and yet another from Irishman Young Pat Regan.
Mikko Mutanen, Terry Mangan, Bob Lindborg, Michael Lenihan and Freddy
Starbuck’s were all tied on 35 points so it’s all down to next Sunday.
Six 2’s were recorded on the day.
Friday, March 1, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (7) 34pts
2nd Matt Doyle (12) 32pts
3rd Conner Doyle (11) 30pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (19) 40pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (16) 34pts
3rd Gebi Kindle (18) 33pts
C Flight
1st Tom Killoran (20) 35pts
2nd Fergus O’Brien (25) 34pts
33 Christy Knight (21) 33pts
Despite some outstanding totals, the story of the day was Irishman Benny
O’Conner’s hole-in-one on the par three 6th hole. Congratulations Benny!
In the daily competition the Donkey fashioned a best on the day, an
incredible 40 points to top the field by five clear strokes. The Donkey
seems to have a soft spot for Treasure Hill as this is where he met and
married Sim. Following in B Flight was Tore Eliassen at a distance and
he in turn was followed by Gebi Kindle.
A Flight, or you might call it the Co. Offaly Flight, was full of Micks,
led by the infamous Offaly gang members Kevin ‘stick erm up’ McEntee and
Matt Dillon Doyle (didn’t take them long) on 34 and 32 respectively.
Matt’s younger brother Conner Doyle on 30 rounded out the flight.
The Irish boys carried on were their mates left off in C Flight with Tom
Killoran claiming the top spot. Friend to us all, Fergus O’Brien, took
the silver and Christy ‘Good’ Knight tied up the flight.
Matt Doyle, Colin Davis and Christy Knight were as sick as parrots as
Benny scooped the 2’s pot.
And here’s me thinking St. Pat’s Day was on March the 17!
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3
near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

Kit pips Tom for top spot
The Backyard Golf Society
Kit (center rear) poses with
the staff at Blue Sky Bar.
It was another pleasantly quick round at Emerald for
the Backyard Boys last Friday, March 1. What a relief after the high
season debacle that befalls most courses.
Winning the stableford with 38 points was the soon-to depart Kit.
Runner-up with 37 points was Tom the Defib Man. Near-pin on this
occasion went to The Mummy. Michelle Chatt won the most skins, the first
6 holes were all draws so Michelle’s birdie 2 on the par 3, 7th hole won
him all 7. Irish John won 5, Mickey the Yak won 3 and there were singles
to Don the Divorcer, Randy the French Canuck and Martyn the Quiet Man.
Off-setting Kit’s departure to ‘Old Blighty’, we should soon see the
return of Russell ‘He’s a Victorian’ from the wilds of Cameroon and
‘Foos yer Doos’ Cowe from the Saudi sand-box.
We had our first player off the 70 years and over silver tees today,
which may account somewhat for Tom the Defib Man’s 37 points. The rule
is there so well done to Tom on taking full advantage.
Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend remains on the injured list, his claims of a
sore back gaining him little sympathy with his fellow golfers. It has
not affected his ability to speak or down San Miguels in copious
amounts. Yaya’s Delight was another casualty last Friday, a combination
of a sore knee and a new tirak proving too much to overcome.

Hill warms up for Hua Hin with victory at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Greenwood podium placers (from the
left): Barney, Ploy, Paul, and Laurie.
Monday, Feb. 25, Burapha - Stableford
Forty-nine players went to Burapha to play the A and B courses from
the blue markers. The day was hot and humid with a light breeze to
start with that disappeared half way through the round and it looks
like summer is here to stay, so it’s only going to get hotter from
here on.
The course was presented well with all fairways, greens and rough,
cut and bunkers raked. The greenkeeper continues to heavily water
the course, especially the greens and surrounds which makes for some
difficult shots as you have to fly the ball all the way to the
green. Some fairways have dried out and you can get some distance
with your drives, however, the greens are in great condition and
will hold flighted balls and are flat and true to putt on.
Welcome to the TIAC members who joined us today and for the rest of
the week, in preparation for their own annual four-day tournament
which started Monday (4th March), and also welcome back to some of
the Wanneroo boys, namely Kim Scaddan, Terry Fitzgerald and Trevor
Oliver.
Four Divisions plus the ‘2’s and the best score of the day was
recorded by Tim Knight with 38 points off his 22 handicap, winner of
Division C; other good scores were returned by Wayne Cotterell with
37 points to win Div B; Andrew Makara also with 37 points to win Div
D and Graham Holmes with 36 points to take Div A.
There were four ‘2’s from Eng (B3), Graham Fletcher (B8), & Graham
Holmes got two on A6 & B8.
Div A (0-12)
1st Graham Holmes (6) 36pts
2nd Peter Sapwell (12) 35pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (7) 33pts
Div B (13-17)

2nd John O’Keefe (16) 34pts
3rd Stephen Mann (12) 33pts
Div C (18-22)
1st Timothy Knight (22) 38pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (22) 35pts
3rd John Player (19) 31pts
Div D (23+)

Tuesday, Feb. 26, Khao Kheow – Stableford
28 players to Khao Kheow to play the C and B courses yet
again (6 weeks in a row) and I can tell all players that we will
definitely be playing more of the A course and getting more variety
in the coming weeks. A lovely summer day with a great breeze which
didn’t make the golf course any easier but at least it kept the
golfers cool.
The course is in good condition and all fairways, rough and greens
had been cut and the course looked a picture. The fairways are a
little dry and the new fairways are coming along very well and
overall the course just gets better and better. With the dry
fairways players were getting a lot more run than normal and
certainly helped the longer hitters. The greens are excellent to
putt on and are flat, true and fast.
Welcome to Perry See Hoe for his first game with the Outback and
also welcome back to Rod Crosswell.
Two Divisions plus the ‘2’s and the best scores were all in Division
1 with Conner Doyle returning the best score of the day with 38
points off his 11 handicap from Graham Holmes with 37 and Rod
Crosswell also with 37. Mark Gagliardi was happy to show some form
to take fourth place with 36 points.
Div B was won by Sugar with the meagre score of just 34pts.

Wednesday, Feb. 27, Plantation – Stableford
Twenty-seven players to Siam Plantation to play the
Pineapple and Sugar Cane courses, thanks to the starter for the
switch from the Tapioca course which we have played for the last few
weeks. Two groups hit off at 8am and the other five hit off at our
normal time of 8.36 and all groups were finished and in the
clubhouse by 1pm which is great time around Siam at this time of the
year.
The course has been heavily watered and there was not much run on
the fairways but the greens were very receptive. What can you really
say about the course other than it’s just in great condition and is
always presented that way. Interesting to note that some of the
bunkers have the same faces as those that cost the Thailand lady her
first LPGA win and little ledges can be found on a number of bunkers
which would make for unplayable shots, but what do you do to
stabilise the faces with the amount of rain and run off that they
can get here in Thailand?
Welcome back to Robert Holl joining the rest of his Wanneroo mates
and welcome to new Outbacker, Mark Partridge.
Two Divisions plus the ‘2’s and there were a number of good scores
returned with the best from Robert Holl with 39 points off his 10
handicap to win Division 1 and Peter Macnoe with 38 points of his 23
handicap to win Division 2. Doug Campbell and Chris Davisson both
shot 37 points and Geoff Stimpson 36 points, well done to all.
Only one ‘2’ for the day and that went to Gerry O’Dwyer on Sugar
Cane 6.
Div A (0-14)
1st Robert Holl (10) 39pts
2nd Doug Campbell (13) 37pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (7) 36pts
4th Mark Partridge (9) 35pts
Div B (15+)
1st Peter Macnoe (23) 38pts
2nd Chris Davisson (14) 37pts
3rd Graham Fletcher (23) 35pts
4th John Burns (19) 34pts
Wednesday, Feb. 27, Greenwood – Stableford
An excellent turnout of 23 players here at Greenwood to
play the A & C loops, making a total for the day of 50 players, when
added to the Siam Plantation guys.
Welcome to the three ladies down from Bangkok, namely Ploy
Thongphen, Suparp and Wanta (again) and also welcome back to Bruce
Milner, over from the Philippines and warming up for the big tour
down to Hua Hin in about 10 days time.
Laurie Rive was also warming up for the TIAC group tournament, so a
great start for Laurie to win Div A with 35pts ahead of Paul Bourke,
who is playing well at the moment, on 33. Ploy took third playing
off 6 with 32.
In Div B the honours were taken by Andy Makara, who is getting his
game together and must fancy his chances a bit in Hua Hin; Andy
scored 35pts, four clear of Barney Clarkson who is playing in both
the aforementioned comps, so good luck to you Barney! Tim Knight
kept up his ‘Race2Bkk’ chase with third place, heading a three-way
count back on 30.
Ploy Thongphen got the only ‘2’.
Div A (0-17)
1st Laurie Rive (15) 35pts
2nd Paul Bourke (11) 33pts
3rd Ploy Thongphen (6) 32pts
Div B (18+)
1st Andrew Makara (29) 35pts
2nd Barney Clarkson (24) 31pts
3rd Timothy Knight (22) 30pts
Friday, March 1, Green Valley – Stableford
Green Valley maybe a popular course but they have to
better address their regulars throughout the year rather than
surrender all their carts and caddies to the Koreans, who are only
here for a relatively short time. Why not allow sharing and one
caddie per cart rather than leave the rest of their customers in
disarray, many with no carts and many more with no caddies?
More than half our field of 56 players started without caddies (for
which they were charged) and many customers were left stranded down
by the clubhouse waiting for carts or looking for their clubs.
When I left, having got all our groups away, I drove out past the
accommodation block where many of the Koreans stay, to see at a
guess, some 60 to 80 carts all parked up, each with one bag on them
and caddies nearby, whilst they were all in having lunch!
The best score of the day was recorded by Greg Hill with an
excellent 40pts to win Div C, indicating that he might be just
coming right for next week’s big tourney in Hua Hin and another who
must fancy his chances will be Paul Bourke, who took the Div A win
on 36, with Peter Sapwell and Paul Greenaway both one shot back.
Elsewhere, Joe Mooneyham got his new R1 driver set right, winning
Div B with 37pts, a long way clear of the second placed man, a
surprised John Stafford on 31, tied with Tom Morris, and Dave Coller
won Div D with the same 37.
Believe it or not, there was not one single ‘2’ today.
Div A (0–14)
1st Paul Bourke (11) 36pts
2nd Peter Sapwell (12) 35pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (8) 35pts
4th Selwyn G. Wegner (13) 34pts
5th Martin Kingswood (13) 33pts
Div B (15–18)
1st Joe Mooneyham (16) 37pts
2nd John Stafford (18) 31pts
3rd Tom Morris (17) 31pts
4th Barry McIntosh (17) 29pts
5th Brian Milburn (18) 28pts
Div C (19–22)
1st Greg Hill (20) 40pts
2nd Ken Holman (20) 36pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (19) 35pts
4th Tim Davies (20) 34pts
5th Bob Lindborg (22) 34pts
Div D (23+)
1st David Coller (23) 37pts
2nd Grant Birkett (28) 35pts
3rd David Davies (23) 31pts
4th Ray Verrall (23) 28pts
5th Andrew Makara (29) 28pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from
Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.
Finally, if you want to get away from Pattaya over Songkhran, log on
to the www.outbackgolfbar.com and read about our next tour to Chiang
Mai. A smaller scale than usual, no more than 28 players, leaving on
15th April and returning on Sat 20th April, and there are still
places available.

Galvin does it in style
IPGC golf from The Tara Court
Sunday, Feb. 24, Mt. Shadow -
Stableford
It was another beautiful day for golf, cloudy and not too hot. The group was
a bit smaller today as a lot of our friends have gone home, the holidays
over for another year. The number of golfers on the course also seemed
smaller and for the first time in a long time there was no problem with
caddies and we teed off 15 mins before our time and got around in a little
over four hours.
Alec
Hoare.
Again today nobody managed to play to
their handicap, is it the course or are we all just bad golfers? A new
winner today as Alec Hoare took the honours with 33pts, beating his playing
partner Joe McArdle in to second on a count back. Michael Byrne had his
first podium with us, coming in third place with 31pts. Michael comes from
the same village and golf club in Ireland as Joe, i.e. Blackrock, Dundalk,
so it was good to see the two of them in the prizes. Andy Galvin also had 31
but lost to Michael on the count back and had to settle for fourth.
In the ladies section, Pauline Byrne won for the second week in a row with
32pts and Theresa Connolly was second with 27. Theresa also comes from
Dundalk so today three members from the same club were in the prizes.
There were no ‘2’s today so a carry over to Crystal Bay on Tuesday.
Back at O’Gara’s Bar and Resturaunt we said good bye to John and Kathleen
Fetherston who were also going back to sunny Ireland this week. John and
Kathleen have played in all our outings since we started the group and have
had a number of victories with us and will be missed very much.
1st Alec Hoare (18) 33pts
2nd Joe McArdle (15) 33pts
3rd Michael Byrne (20) 31pts
4th Andy Galvin (19) 31pts
Ladies
1st Pauline Byrne (29) 32pts
2nd Theresa Connolly (25) 27pts
Tuesday, Feb. 26, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Crystal Bay was the venue today for yet another
enjoyable round of golf. We were supposed to play A and B courses but there
were a few 5-balls ahead of us on A which meant that play was slow so when
we finished A we changed to C instead of B and had a free run and got round
quickly. So overall the round still took just a little over four hours.
Andy Galvin.
The course was in very good condition with
the greens reasonably fast.
Andy Galvin had his first win with us and when he decided to do it he did it
in style, winning by a clear six points with an excellent forty point total.
This was an excellent score on a long course (6,500yds).
On his first visit with us, Donal McGuigan came second with 34pts and on his
last visit with us for this holiday was Michael Byrne who came third with
33, beating Joe McArdle on a count back.
Also on his first game with us, Charlie Lapsey got the only ‘2’ for a very
good payday as there was a carryover from Sunday.
Back at O’Gara’s, we said good bye to John and Theresa Connolly, Michael and
Theresa Byrne and Don and Pauline Byrne all of whom were going back to a
very cold Ireland this week.
1st Andy Galvin (19) 40pts
2nd Donal McGuigan (23) 34pts
3rd Michael Byrne (20) 33pts
2’s: Charlie Lapsey
Thursday, Feb. 28, Bangpra - Stableford
A smaller group than usual today at Bangpra as some of
our friends went to Laem Chabang. We will be playing at Laem Chabang every
Thursday in March as we are lucky to have a few of our friends who are
members there and we can get discount on the green fees of up to 40%, which
makes it very good value for such a beautiful course. If anyone wants to
join us there they are welcome and they will also avail of the discount so
feel free to contact us.
For some reason today at Bangpra all the tees were placed back on the tee
boxes, well behind the actual markers and some of them on the Blue tee boxes
which made it very long, over 6,700yds. However Frank McGowan still managed
to play to his handicap and won with 36pts, which was an excellent score on
such a long course. The next best was Joe McArdle with 34.
There were no 2’s today.
1st Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
2nd Joe McArdle (15) 34pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and
Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratamnak
Rd around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George on 087 540
0844.

Holiday, minus the fun
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society began the week on
Makha Bucha Day, Monday 25th February, with a visit to Rayong CC to play a
stableford competition on the enigmatic course. The golfers were met with no
caddies, an increased fee and a scruffy course which now has a cart
restriction. “Grin and bear it” was the advice and few were grinning by the
end of a long day.
For the record the best scores were posted by Mike Earley (31), Toshihiro
Aoki (32) and Dave Moriarty (33). There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby
Bevy went to Alan Walker for his 21-9 point split. It was altogether a day
best forgotten.
Vic puts on a show
Eastern Star had its turn to host the Pattaya Golf Society on
Wednesday, 27th February, for a medal round on another enigmatic track. The
course was not in good condition with fairways in need of some “TLC” and
greens sporting newly turfed areas making accurate putts a challenge.
Scores inevitably reflected course conditions with Larry Slattery and Dave
Moriarty sharing third place with net 78. For Larry it could have been much
better had it not been for the adventurous embarrassments on the par five
hole number eleven. One shot better was Peter Ditz on 77.
The winner with his best performance with the group in more than six years
was Vic Barton whose game plan was simple. Long gone was the power and
exuberance of youth, to be replaced by canny accuracy off the tee and
unnerving precision onto the greens giving him the advantage. He finished
with a score of net 67 to become the only PGS golfer to break par on the
course in seven visits!
Such is the challenge at Ban Chang’s alternate course these days. There were
no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Tim Davies for his hero-to-zero
efforts after a fine performance a few days earlier. Times are tough at
Eastern Star with the greens the way they are at present and sadly there is
no miracle cure for the once proud course.
Big win for Kiwi Flynn
After playing courses recently which have disappointed in
their conditions, the Pattaya Golf Society put all the frustration behind
them as the group visited Bangpra on Friday, 1st March, to play a stableford
competition. The course was in magnificent condition with wickedly fast
greens and a slight discount and an early start gave the golfers in the two
flights a great boost.
The cut was set at seventeen and under and in the second flight Pat Murphy,
sporting his very “new” knee, showed he is ready to take to the course again
with 29 very well crafted points which gave him third place. In second place
with his best individual finish in two months was Mr Len with 30 points,
another sign, if one were needed, that he is overcoming his physical
problems at last. The flight winner, fit and full of it, was Vic Barton who
has enjoyed a fine week ending on level par 36 points.
In the top flight third place went to Robbie Taylor with 32 points and
second went to Rick Schramm on 35 points with the best gross figures of the
day also. The winner, with the best PGS score at Bangpra for a few visits,
was Kiwi golfer Alan Flynn, currently sweeping all before him, with a fine
41 points. He also shared the ‘2’s pot with Jim Ferris, birdying the second
whilst Jim’s came on the seventeenth.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Dave Plaiter and the Booby Bevy went to
Jimmy Cloy after his 15-7 split. Beautiful Bangpra, good golf, and the
luxury of Khun Peung’s birthday party back at Rabbi’s ensured the week ended
on a high for the PGS.

Bartley’s burn up
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winners pose with staff at the Relax
Bar.
Mike Gerrard.
The last Tuesday of the month is always our stroke play tournament for the
Trattoria Italiana voucher, donated by Giorgio Baccioli. Usually stroke play
sorts out most player’s good and bad points, but today John Bartley could
only display his better points.
Returning a net score of 62 (Gross 81) enabled John to claim the winner’s
prize plus the voucher and he was way ahead of anyone else in the field.
Everyone has the right to be famous for 15 minutes, however John’s fame ran
into about 2 hours at the Relax Bar after our game. Only one problem with
playing so well is that the next game is sure to bring you back to earth
with a big band!
In second place with a very modest net 71 was the ever improving Richard
Baldwin, third was Sergio Poggi with net 72 and fourth place was claimed by
another man in form, Peter Harris, also with net 72.
Near pins went to Ulf Berggren, Mike Gerrard, Trevor Greef & Bob Neylon.
Lucky draw winners today were Ulf Bergstrom, David Lusha & Eamon Murtagh.
We play every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday at Phoenix at approx 11.30 am each
day. From April 1, Phoenix green fees for visitors are as follows: Sports
Day’s (Tuesday & Thursday) at 800 baht green fee, Monday, Wednesday & Friday
members guest rate 1,000 baht green fee. Caddies and carts extra. Weekends,
Members guest rate 1,600 baht green fee.

Vincenzi victorious at Phoenix
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Feb. 25, Pattaya C.C. -
Stableford
Pattana was on the schedule for today but with no holiday discount we played
here at Pattaya Country Club with a negotiated and realistic green fee.
Horst Starchl, Lindsay
Phillips, Harry Vincenzi and Jerry McCarthy.
There were 35 players out and 39 points was the best score in the three
divisions, coming from Rod Howett in division 3. David Phillips took second
spot with 36 points, beating Charlie Charalambous and Randy Flello on a
19/17/14 back nine count back.
Uli Bangerter topped division 1 with 38 points, beating Jerry McCarthy on a
20/18 back nine count back, and Lindsay Phillips was third with 35.
In his last game but one before his return to China and then to Bristol for
a short break, Bob Poole was the winner in division 2 with 36 points, one
ahead of Rudi Schaefer in second, and the frog, a.k.a. Jean Morel, beat Don
Head on a 20/14 back nine count back for third after they both scored 34
points. Miss Nut was not happy at the presentation.
Near pins went to Gerry Cooke, Dave Edwards, Jean Morel, Chris Voller, Mike
Fitzgerald, Randy Flello and Matti Pihlajisto.
Chris Voller birdied the 12th to win the division one ‘2’s pot and Mike
Fitzgerald did the same in division two with a ‘2’ on the 16th and he was a
happy chappy.
It was bon voyage today to Bob Poole back to China, Mike and Herma
Fitzgerald back to Holland, and Howard and Jill Stanley back to the UK. We
will see you all soon!
Wednesday, Feb. 27, Phoenix - Stableford
There was a field of 56 players out today in a four divisional stableford
competition which also included a pairs better-ball contest. It was very
warm as we arrived and we teed off bang on schedule at 10 a.m. as 14 groups
set out to do battle on the Lakes and Ocean nines.
Harry Vincenzi returned the best score of the day, winning division 2 with
41 points. Barry Stirling took second with 40 points, Jerry McCarthy was in
third place on 36 and Dennis Scougal beat Jim Connelley and Rudi Schaefer on
a 19/18/16 back nine count back for fourth after they all came in with 35
points.
Mike Fitzgerald was the winner in division 3 with 40 points ahead of Zorro,
alias Paul Chabot in second with 35. Magne Gunnarsson was third on 34 and
Charlie Charalambous came in fourth place on count back after scoring 32
points.
The lowest winning score was in division 1, with Chris Voller, now playing
off 8, winning the division with 38 points. This was followed by three
scores on 35 and the resulting count back saw Uli Bangerter in second,
Wichai Tanunsorn third and Billy Fitzgerald taking fourth.
In the ladies competition today after a three month spell in France, Pranee
Bossett returned and won the ladies division with 38 points. Miss Nut was in
second four points behind and Noi Emmerson placed third on 27.
Technical prizes were awarded as follows: Nearest the pin 3 shots (Lake 5) -
Noi Emmerson, Marty Rock, Jerry McCarthy and Richard Kings; Nearest the pin
2 shots (Lake 8) - Billy Fitzgerald, Tim Hake; Nearest the pin 2 shots
(Ocean 6) - Lindsay Phillips, Dennis Scougal and Mike Fitzgerald; Longest
Drive (Ocean 9) - Raivo Velsberg, Bruce Gardner and David Phillips.
Regular near pin prizes went to Horst Starchl, Glenn King, Billy Fitzgerald,
Jerry McCarthy, Kern Carr, Mike Fitzgerald and Bryan Rought.
Barry Stirling birdied Ocean 7, as did Harry Vincenzi, and Horst Starchl the
2nd hole on the Lake course to split the ‘2’s pot three ways in division 1.
It was bon voyage today to Glenn and Lyn King, heading back to Oz.
Friday, March 1, Eastern Star - Stableford
This course is slightly improving each week and there were not too many
moans today and we all look forward to the planned improvements being made
during April. We did suggest to the management that it would be better if
they closed the course during Songkran week on the 13th as we will not be
playing in this period, but who knows.
37 points was the best score in the two divisions and Ted Gardner was on
podium position in division 1, with 6 points after 7 holes and 11 on the
front nine, then 22 points on the back nine. Chris Voller came in second
with 33 points, beating Pete Sumner by one point.
In the frame yet again, Rod Howett won division two with 35 points, while
Iain Walsh was second with 30 after beating Frank Kelly on a 19/15 back nine
count back.
Paul Chabot birdied the third hole to scoop the ‘2’s pot in division 2 and a
rollover ensues in division 1 to next Friday.
Near pins were won by Mikael Andersson, Ken Blake, Jerry Douley, Frank Kelly
and Walter Webber.

Clive’s best ever at Pleasant Valley
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Feb. 26, The Emerald -
Stableford
First to Tuesday when we had a full field to play The Emerald course, which
is currently in good condition. With clear skies and a light breeze some
good scores were turned in from the 2 flights, with the cut set at 20+.
Clive Hoseason (center)
mobbed by his fans.
Jim Federspiel (19) led the way in the lower handicapped group. The minor
placings needed a count back after both Owen Walkley (11) & Neil Harvey (18)
recording 36 points. Owen just getting the better of Neil 20 to 19.
The higher handicapped group needed a 3-way count back to separate the
players after all signed for 35 points. Leading the way was Joop (32) with a
spectacular 22 points on the back 9, while Paul Davies (27) & Phompimon
Seesa, aka Mham (28) needed to go to the last 3 holes, with Paul finally
getting the nod 6/3.
Near pins were shared around between Owen, Clive, Jeff & Joop.
Thursday, Feb. 28, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Now to Thursday at Pleasant Valley, with the course looking a
picture from the cluhouse balcony. It was a hot day with only a light breeze
to relieve the humidity, but good scores were going to be needed to get
amongst the prizes.
As the headline suggests, it was Clive Hoseason (23) breaking 90 for the
first time ever, to record a strong 42 points. Frank will not be getting his
clubs back anytime soon. In second spot with his best 9 holes and round this
holiday trip was Bob Edwards (9), ending up with 40 points after 24 (yes 24)
on the back 9. This left the in-form Jim Federspiel (19) to pick up the
bronze after his 37 points.
Near pins were again spread around with the 3 winners each getting 1, while
Willem picked up the remaining prize.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the
“Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to
see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Pattaya to host another
major golf event
Pattaya will host the 4th Thai
Caddie Championship at Siam Plantation G.C.
Pattaya, the winner of the Golf Destination of the Year
2012 for Asia and Australasia, has won the right to host the 2nd Asia Golf
Tourism Convention (AGTC) from 29th April to May 2nd 2013.
Organised by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO),
this three day convention will bring together leading golf tour operators,
all selling Asia Pacific golf destinations, to meet local golf clubs,
hotels, in bound operators and tourist boards.
This is a massive coup for the Eastern Seaboard Golf Management Association
(EGA) whose 20 member golf courses cover the region.
With several major Championships including the Honda LPGA Thailand, the
Thailand Open and the Singha All Thailand Golf Tour, Pattaya is now
recognized globally as a top golf destination.
With championship courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Peter
Thompson, Gary Player and Pete Dye, the EGA members attracted over 500,000
foreign visitors last year.
Mike Mesommonta, EGA President said, “Although Pattaya is a well-known
golfing destination for Asian golfers, with over 80 pre-registered European
golf tour operators attending the AGTC 2013, we now have a great opportunity
to increase overseas bookings for the next few years.
“We plan to proudly show off our first class golf courses and all the
incredible attractions that the region has to offer during and after the
convention, and expect to see a massive increase in overseas golfers,
especially from Europe in the next few years,” said Mesommonta.
Apart from hosting the leading professionals, the EGA will also host one of
the world’s most unique tournaments - the Thai Caddie Championship attracts
over 700 Thai caddies to compete, with the final this year being held at the
Siam Plantation Golf Course.
As Thongchai Jaidee, Thailand’s top professional recently commented, “Our
smiling Thai caddies are definitely the secret weapon to a great round of
golf!”

Williams wraps up February title
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
February Golfer of the Month -
Gez Williams.
Monday, Feb. 25, Greenwood C & A –
Stableford
Many golfers are put off from playing on public holidays, and it’s true that
we’ve had bad experiences in the past when playing the cheaper courses, but
today on Makha Bucha day we had a reasonable deal from Greenwood and arrived
to find the course surprisingly quiet.
We teed off on schedule and with a smaller field of only 16 golfers the four
groups were able to set their own pace of play. The course was in fine
condition and the weather was mostly overcast with a moderate breeze keeping
the temperature down.
A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all except Colin Greig, who hates this
course with a passion due to the long grass around the fringes of greens
which forces him to chip rather than using his favourite weapon – the puff
from off the green.
Mark West discovered some good form to win the single flight ahead of Peter
Platt and Mashi Kaneta, with newcomer Mike Mills, playing his first game
under his newly acquired handicap, taking the fourth podium position.
1st Mark West (14) 38pts
2nd Peter Platt (13) 36pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (15) 34pts
4th Mike Mills (25) 34pts
Near Pins: Peter Platt, Mashi Kaneta, and Neil Hurst.
Wednesday, Feb. 27, The Emerald – Medal
24 golfers today for our visit to the popular Bang Chang course, on a bright
and breezy day. Once again the course was surprisingly quiet and we got away
on schedule for our second medal round of the month generously sponsored by
KPK Foods.
The course is generally in good shape, although the cabbage grass which has
now overtaken all the fairways, doesn’t suit everyone. There were no holdups
throughout the round and our progress should have been quicker than it
actually was which can only be down to the leading groups holding up the
rest of the field.
Steve Durey, playing his first game for quite some time with the Bunker
Boys, was the best performer on the day, taking the honours in the A Flight.
Gordon Melia rediscovered his putting form to win the B Flight, with Reg
Smart taking the runners’ up spot ahead of Mike Corner on a count back. Gez
Williams took second place overall, comfortably securing the points he
needed to win the February Golfer of the Month title.
A Flight
1st Steve Durey (17) net 71
2nd Gez Williams (15) net 73
3rd Tore Eliassen (15) net 74
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (19) net 74
2nd Reg Smart (31) net 75
3rd Mike Corner (19) net 75
Near Pins: Raleigh Gosney, Mark West Tony Robbins and Jerry Waselenkoff.
Friday, March 1, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
A few new faces today, and we welcomed back John Graham after a prolonged
work absence in Gabon – not much golf there.
We’ve played at Mountain Shadow quite a lot recently, mainly because the
course is in good condition, offers good value, and always provides a tough
test of golf. One thing that is noticeable here is that a number of drain
covers around the course have rusted away and are now dangerous hazards,
which also gobble up golf balls as Mike Corner found out on the twelfth
hole.
The greens are always testing here, but today it was apparent that the green
keeper was displaying his sense of humour, by putting the pin positions in
some very precarious places. Your scribe was one of those to suffer, missing
a two foot birdie putt, and walking off with a bogey on a particularly
treacherous par three green.
Colin Greig was the only golfer to play to his handicap to win the A Flight,
and Neil Griffin (Pattaya’s only resident Derby County supporter) took the
honours in the B Flight.
Raleigh Gosney introduced a new least putts competition which was won
jointly by Mike Grasser and Tony Robbins both taking only 31 putts – a fine

Stuvik moves into 3rd in the Euro Formula 3 Winter Series
Sandy Stuvik heads a fleet of
chasing cars as he makes a turn at the top of the straight at the Jerez
Circuit in Spain, Saturday, March 2.
The second round of the European Formula 3 Open Winter
Series was held at the Jerez Circuit in Spain on the 2nd of March and
Thai driver Sandy Stuvik continued to build on his 2013 championship
aspirations as the young racer consistently ran amongst the five fastest
Formula 3 cars during the Friday free practice.
The Formula 3 race was held after the Formula 1 and GP2 series had
completed their first season tests at the circuit which is located in
the southernmost part of Spain. The track offered pleasant temperatures
compared to other snow covered circuits around Europe.
Stuvik was not entirely satisfied with his qualifying session, as he
could only manage a 7th starting position on the grid. He put this down
to his own on track mistakes and over-confidence in the car’s down force
in the cold early morning run. A high speed off into the gravel in the
fast sweeping turn eight earlier in the day also lingered on the mind of
the Thai.
In the race proper, however, the 17 year old from Rayong did not hold
back and moved up 2 positions through turns 1 and 2 after a very good
start. An accident in the back of the 23 car field saw the safety car
deployed and the field bunched up for a second release on the third lap.
After the restart Stuvik closed down on the two deVillota cars running
in front as one of them developed an engine problem and on lap 6 after
setting the third fastest lap time of the race, he passed and moved into
4th place.
17 year old Stuvik will
return to Europe in April for the European Formula 3 season.
Pushing hard to catch up to the front runners, Stuvik went wide onto
gravel on the exit of turn 10 and dropped back to fifth position. He
again gave chase and in the process of trying to regain 4th place he
made contact with the car in front and damaged his front wing. From then
on he focused on maintaining his position and making sure the wing did
not come off and took the checkered flag in a solid fifth place.
With that result the Thai driver is now 3rd in the Winter Series points
tally, as he prepares to go back to Thailand and year ending school
exams, before the European Formula 3 seasons starts in earnest at Paul
Ricard Circuit in France on 26-28 of April.
Sandy Nicholas Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of
Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation,
Dacon Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

United open league
campaign with 2-0 victory
Jung Ji-Soo celebrates
scoring for Pattaya United against Samut Songkhram FC during their opening
Thai Premier League match, Saturday, March 2.
Phasakorn Channgam
Pattaya United, the Loma Dolphins, got their Toyota Thai Premier League
season off to a perfect start with a confidence boosting 2-0 away win at
Samut Songkhram FC on Saturday, March 2.
Captained by Niweat Siriwong, the Dolphins took the game to their opponents
from the opening whistle and after coming close on several occasions, they
finally took a deserved lead in the 37th minute when Patawee Jiraburanakit
latched onto a deflected shot from Anuwat Inyin to head over the Songkhram
keeper Lucas Daniel and into the net.
The score remained 1-0 until half-time and after the break the home team
came out in more determined mood and laid siege to the Pattaya goal for the
first 15 minutes of the second period. United had keeper Kung Bong-Jun to
thank for producing a tremendous save to prevent Saengsee from equalizing
for the home team and at the other end of the field Pattaya midfielder
Sutthisa saw a good effort denied by Daniel.
Entering the last 5 minutes of the match, Songkhram made a final determined
effort and they went close when Buaphetch fired the ball into the side
netting. United broke quickly on the counter attack and Kamruen’s clever
pass found Jung Ji-Soo in space, with the Korean forward able to calmly slot
the ball home to secure all 3 points for Pattaya.
United’s next league match is on Sunday, March 10 against Osotspa M-150 at
the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Around the grounds last weekend, there were wins for defending champions
Muang Thong United, Police FC, Songkhla United and TOT. Chonburi ‘Sharks’
meanwhile were held to a 2-2 draw away at BEC Tero Sasana.

Coco ladies shine at Lawn Bowls National Singles event
Winners pose with their
trophies alongside organizers and officials at the Thailand Lawn Bowls
National Singles tournament held at Coco Club Resort, Pattaya, Sunday, March
3.
The Lawn Bowls Association of Thailand
held their annual Singles tournament at an indoor venue for the first time
on March 2nd and 3rd. The top 28 Thai male and female lawn bowlers were at
Coco Club Resort, located just outside Pattaya, to enjoy a friendly but
serious weekend of lawn bowling which would normally decide who will
represent Thailand for the coming year. Very competitive bowling was seen
and after a day and a half of play and with the finals on a 1 hour 20 mins
or first to 21 scoreline, there was no time wasting.
The men’s event went generally according to ranking with Bangkok based Ing
(Acting Sub Lt. Sakpraset Mitsaha) just outstaying the younger challenge of
Num (Tanumsak Kinsorn) by just one bowl (17-16) in the final and Bus (Acting
Sub Lt. Aunurek Rotmanee) edging Tan (Chaithai Kanganakparn) 21-18 for the
3rd and 4th place.
Our local hopeful Bank pulled out all the stops in winning all three
qualifying rounds but just fell short at the quarter finals stage.
The ladies competition was a different story with the Bangkok
representatives being outplayed by the local girls who took all three top
spots. Thanom Karnrandee was well focused all the weekend but was just
outfought in the semi final by Coco’s own Sue Bryant to set up the final
against Lek Pettyfer, who had just overcome Songsin Chou from Bangkok.
Thanom went on to win 3rd spot against Songsin 21-15 and Lek was pushed all
the way but held on to an early 8–0 lead to resist a run in from a resurgent
Sue to win 21-17.
The winners received 20,000 baht, runners up 10,000 baht and play offs 5,000
baht and a cup from the Lawn Bowls Association of Thailand in association
with the Coco Club and sponsors Singha.

Pattaya CC has golden time in Chiang Mai
Pattaya
Cricket Club recently embarked on their 2nd ever tour – for a Triangular
T20 Tournament in Chiang Mai on Feb. 23 & 24. The games involved Chiang
Mai, Pattaya and a select XI from Patong in Phuket. Pattaya had a 12
strong army of men, arriving fully prepared for a social tour of cricket
and fun!
Chiang Mai and Pattaya kicked off the first game with Chiang Mai
electing to bat. The hosts made a flying start on their beautiful
Gymkhana ground. The ball was dispatched to the boundary at regular
intervals and there was a fair bit of calamity shown by the fielding
Pattaya side. That was not helped with their star allrounder Slinky
having broken a rib in very suspicious circumstances. Only G.I Joe could
take any credit from his all action ground fielding.
The club’s famous motto given by the legendary Slasher Roberts, “It’s
only a dropped catch if it touches the hand,” was taken a bit too
literally as players seemed to be running the opposite direction of the
ball. This resulted in a huge total for the hosts of 237 in 20 overs.
In reply Pattaya made a desperate start when Dan was out for a duck.
However, that brought the lethal combination of Jonny G and Captain
Phillbrook to the crease. Jonny G was like a whirlwind, smashing some
devilish shots all over the park, whereas Simon was much more sensible
in his approach. The pair were on target with only 6 overs to go, only
for Chiang Mai to bring on Glamorgan Under 19 player Liam to finally
take the wicket of Simon (38) who went scarlet in his frustration of
letting his wicket fall. Eventually the run chase ended at a very
respectable 184, with Jonny G top scoring on 74.
Pattaya Cricket Club line up
for their match against Chiang Mai.
The following day saw Pattaya play a Patong select XI, who appeared to
select very well, bringing in several Premier League players from the
Southerners and Parrots. Pattaya won the toss and batted. Dan blazed his
way at the top of the innings with form reminiscent of his youth. He
dictated to the bowlers from the start and was ruthless to anything that
didn’t seem worthy. With useful contributions from several players lower
down, Dan’s 85 helped Pattaya to a healthy total of 169.
Pattaya saw an opportunity and opened with Bobby, who managed to sniff
out a wicket with the 2nd ball of the game. This was backed up by Holty
who managed to pick up a wicket with his ‘mysteron’ ball and thanks to
the agility shown by wicketkeeper Jonny G. This pressure increased when
Andy was galloping into bowl and it looked like Pattaya might canter to
victory. However, Chris had other ideas and started to smash the bowlers
all around the ground.

action.
With the game about to reach its climax, Simon had no other thought than
to bring back Bobby, who is famed for his blocking of all finishing
strokes. However, his slow poison was not enough this time to stop
Patong winning with 5 balls to spare.
Both games were fantastic performances and Pattaya showed brave hearts
and courage whilst playing against younger and fitter opposition. It was
a great weekend of sport and we will look forward to our next jolly boys
outings – wherever that maybe.
A special thanks to Danielle for scoring and Rabbi for umpiring – you
both did a wonderful job. There were a few alarming moments when the
team’s mascot Patsy was thought to be abducted, but luckily she was
found safe and sound after an “all-nighter”
Indian under-25’s defeat Pattaya CC in tense finish
One week after the Chiang Mai trip, the RAW Cricket Club from Goa in
India brought their under 25’s XI to Thailand and played Pattaya CC in a
40 over game at Thai Polo Ground in Pattaya on Saturday, March 2.
The game was always going to be a tough match for PCC against a youthful
and enthusiastic under-25’s of considerable talent. PCC, were at nearly
full strength, with Simon Philbrook as Captain and the Thai national
wicketkeeper Sunny as his deputy.
PCC won the toss and elected to bat first on a very warm morning. Debdas
perished in the 3rd over as he chipped a catch to mid wicket. Simon
joined Sunny and the pair soon knuckled down to the task as they
withstood a very hostile new ball attack led by Bala and Abhu. Sunny
nearly lost his smile and teeth as a bouncer whistled under his nose at
90 mph and Simon had several bruises around the rib cage but both
survived and slowly began to dominate.
Simon Phillbrook (right) presents a trophy
to the captain of the RAW Cricket Club following their match at Thai
Polo Club, Saturday, March 2.
At 48 for 1 PCC seemed to be edging the contest until Sunny skied an
attempted drive and was caught at cover point for 18. Salman then joined
the fray and was immediately in the runs as he took the game to RAW CC.
Again PCC seemed to be moving into a strong position at 134 for 2 but
Salman was out caught, trying to hit over the infield for 37. That
sparked a middle order collapsed that the RAW CC bowlers relished as
only Mithu with 17no contributed anything of significance.
Simon eventually fell to a superb catch on the boundary that would have
been a maximum but for the tremendous athleticism of Abhu for a hard
fought 80. Bala returned to clean up the tail that definitely did not
wag. He finished with a hatrick that included long walks for Hamza, Andy
and Jerome and figures of 4 for 14 from 7 overs. PCC set a target of 190
to win.
In reply RAW CC were immediately under pressure as Usman gave the
opening batsmen a taste of their own medicine and the pressure soon paid
off as he clean bowled Siddesh (4), had Abhu lbw (0) and the captain
Tushar caught behind (7). RAW were 32 for 3 but the experienced Bala,
ably supported by his middle order kept them in the game.
When Thomas had Bala (49) caught and bowled and Usman returned to trap
Avdhut lbw (32) the result was very much in the balance at 170 for 6.
Debdas continued the squeeze but as regularly as wickets fell runs were
being scored. Eventually one run was needed with one wicket remaining
and the excellent Abhijit (22 no) fittingly cover drove the ball through
the gap to end a marvellous game of cricket.
Men of the match were Simon and Bala who each received mementos for
their efforts and RAW CC kindly donated a wonderful trophy to
commemorate the first of what is hoped to be one of many PCC v RCC
fixtures in the future.
Note: If anyone is interested in playing cricket in Pattaya, we cater
for players in the ranges of good, the bad and the ugly – so get in
touch with our chairman Simon at

ground at Thai Polo.
