Chonburi lauded for 2009 battle against H1N1 virus

Public health experts from 25 countries used Chonburi as a case
study on battling the deadly 2009 H1N1 influenza virus as the Prince
Mahidol Award Foundation met in Pattaya.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and top officials at the Chonburi Public Health
Department welcomed committee members and foreign guests of the
international conference to Pattaya City Hall Jan. 30.
Doctors Smith Prasannakan and Vichai Thanasophon discussed how Pattaya
and Chonburi health officials managed to get ahead of the virus, which
killed 184 and infected 16,874 in Thailand in 2009.
Following its Pattaya mission, the Foundation meeting returned to
Bangkok, where HRH Princess Sirindhorn presented its top awards to Sir
Michael Rawlins, chairman of the U.K.’s National Institute for Health
and Clinical Excellence, and Dr. Uche Veronica Amazigo, former director
of the African Program for Onchocerciasis Control at the World Health
Organization’s offices in Nigeria.
