Sports celebrities promoting Thai charities
Peter Banner from the Legacy
of Legends.Org introduces his organisation to members and guests of Pattaya
City Expats Club. Legacy of Legends raises money for charities and other
worthwhile causes such as the Mechai Viravaidya Foundation, Women with a
Mission, and Operation Smile Thailand, by having sporting greats make guest
appearances, and by auctioning memorabilia such as autographed sports wear,
or e.g. signed golf score cards.
Sports celebrities from USA and UK will be promoting
charities in Thailand. This was the message at the Sunday, February 3
meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club. Peter Banner followed up a
successful career in professional rugby with an equally successful career in
raising funds for charities based on personal appearances by retired sports
icons. Peter mentioned that he played professional rugby in the United
Kingdom and Australia for 20 years; and that for the last 14 years, he has
specialized in fundraising for charities. In the process, Peter has worked
with many great English and American sports icons, such as Sir Ian Botham,
Sir Bobby Robson, Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Al Serrato advises PCEC
members of the upcoming Members Dinner.
Peter has lived in Thailand for the last two years. His
company, Legacy of Legends, is registered in Thailand. For 2013, Legacy of
Legends has contracted with a number of sports personalities to make
personal appearances in Pattaya, Bangkok and Singapore. The appearances
typically involve gala dinners; sometimes, they also involve other events,
such as special golf days and auctions of sports memorabilia. Events are
planned for April, June and during October/November. Proceeds from these
events will be donated to three charities in Thailand: (1) the Mechai
Viravaidya Foundation, (2) Women with a Mission, and (2) Operation Smile
Thailand.
The Mechai Viravaidya Foundation is involved in youth philanthropy and
education. Mechai is well known to PCEC members as the founder of the
Population and Community Development Association (PDA). Website:
www.mechaifoundation.org/mechaihome.asp.
Following his talk, Peter
auctioned off this framed set of score cards, signed by Tiger Woods and Jack
Nicklaus. Anne Smith was the lucky winner.
Women with a Mission describes itself as a “private
voluntary organisation” working to make a positive difference in the lives
of children living along the Thailand/Myanmar border and families in
Chonburi province. Website: http://mywwm.org.
Operation Smile Thailand is a volunteer medical services organisation that
provides reconstructive facial surgery to indigent children and young
adults. Website: http://thailand.operationsmile.org.
Peter said that the sports personalities he has worked with have all been
big-hearted people, and very generous with their time. Peter told several
stories about Mike Tyson, the boxer, including one about having to drag Mike
away from a visit to a children’s hospital in London, England after he had
been there two hours. Mike had been teaching some of the kids a nursery
rhyme. After he left the hospital, Mike bought and autographed boxing gloves
for each of the kids and their parents.
Open Forum MC Roy Albiston
advises members to keep coins, batteries and magnets away from key cards,
credit cards, etc., (e.g., in a different pocket), as they can erase the
information on the card, often leaving you ‘up the creek without a key
card’.
At the conclusion of the speech, Peter auctioned off a
large framed montage of photos of golf greats Tiger Woods and Jack Nicholas
including their autographs. Peter noted that the autographs came with
certificates of authenticity. Peter said that the proceeds received from the
auction would be donated to one of the three charities of the winning
bidders choosing. Bidding started at 11,000 baht and ended with the winning
bid of 28,000 baht.
Legacy of Legends plans to bring Sugar Ray Leonard to Pattaya for two
appearances during the first half of April: one, a gala dinner at the
Centara Pattaya Hotel; and the other, a golf day and auction. The company
also plans to bring a number of former Manchester United Stars to Pattaya in
the first week of June. Finally, the company has tentative plans to bring
Mike Tyson to Pattaya in October or November. (In all cases, the sports
celebrities will also be visiting Bangkok and Singapore.)
Master of Ceremonies Richard Silverberg then provided an update on upcoming
events and called on Roy Albiston to conduct the Open Forum where questions
are asked and answered about Expat living in Thailand; Pattaya in
particular.

PILC holds AGM, elects new president & committee
2013 president, Helle Rantsen, addresses the
membership.
The Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) held its Annual General Meeting
(AGM) at the Cape Dara Hotel in Naklua on Tuesday, February 5. At the AGM,
outgoing president Ann Winfield gave a report of the affairs of the Club, each
committee gave a report of the past year’s business, other matters pertaining to
the Club were discussed, and a new President and General Committee were elected.
Over 70 members were in attendance at the beautiful Cape Dara Hotel. The hotel
provided the Club with a delicious international buffet lunch, and the staff was
most professional, attentive and friendly.
As the meeting was called to order, outgoing president Ann Winfield thanked the
membership for their great support during the past year and said how much she
had enjoyed the responsibilities of the presidency. In addition, Ann praised the
members of the General Committee for their hard work and the success that work
had produced for the Club during the year.
Incoming General Committee for 2013.
Member Angela Poustie, standing in for Roseanne Diamente, chair of the
nominating committee, thanked Ann and her committee for their hard work last
year and presented each retiring chairperson with beautiful crystal glasses as a
token of thanks from the Club. She then welcomed in the new committee chair
persons, calling each member to the podium and reading a short biography of each
person as they stepped up.
The new PILC president for 2013 will be Helle Rantsen, born and raised in
Denmark. This is Helle’s second stint living in Pattaya with her husband and two
children. She returned from Oman two years ago, and last year served as PILC’s
Vice President and Welfare Chair. Joyce Aldridge, from England, is the new Vice
President; Nicole Taylor, also from England was elected Secretary; Anja
Schoof-Hertroys from Holland has taken over as Special Events Chair; Mary
Pierce, from Ireland, was named as Welfare Chair; known local resident, Alvi
Sinthuvanik, from Thailand remains as Hospitality Chair; American Anita Laurila
has taken over as Newsletter Editor; and Christine Ross, from Great Britain,

Outgoing president, Ann Winfield, accepts a
thank-you gift from Kirsten Lillelund.
Incoming president, Helle Rantsen, thanked the outgoing committee for all their
hard work, and said that she looked forward to continuing the smooth running of
the Club. “I want to thank you all for your nomination and vote of confidence,”
she told the membership. “I am especially proud,” she said, “to become the very
first president of PILC who is Danish.”
Helle went on to say that she saw PILC as being a social and networking club for
expat women, but one that had a conscience. “The Pattaya International Ladies
Club is involved in many important projects helping and supporting the
population of the Eastern Seaboard, and I see the philanthropic arm of the Club
as being of significant importance,” she said. “In addition,” she went on, “I
want to make sure that the PILC remains a fun, social, and friendly organization
for all members, old and new.”
The 2012 General Committee thanks the membership for
their support.
Helle also pointed out that more and more younger women were joining the
organization as the economy picks up on the Eastern Seaboard and foreign
companies again have started transferring their experienced administrators here
to oversee production.
The new committee, said Helle, is very enthusiastic about the year to come and
have already been brainstorming ways to improve on the already strong
administrative structure of the 250 member-organization. They all agree that
they plan to work hard to improve and build on the many functions, activities,
and welfare projects the Club organizes and runs for members and the community
at large.
The new president then thanked the members again and said she faced the coming
year with excitement and enthusiasm.
The PILC has been in existence for 25 years in Pattaya and is made up of almost
250 members from all walks of life, aged from early twenties to mid-eighties,
and drawn from 34 countries.
PILC is collaborating its’ 25th Silver Anniversary on February 23 with an
elegant Gala Dinner Dance at the Royal Cliff Hotel. All are welcome! Email
