Player pulls out top round at Burapha

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Feb. 4, Burapha – Stableford
Twenty-six players went to Burapha to play the C and D courses. What a lovely day, sunny with a light breeze to start with but it just got hotter as the day progressed; however still good weather for golf.

David Davies - top scorer at Pattana with 40pts.

The course was in good condition with good fairways, bunkers that were raked and greens that had been cut and rolled; some wet areas in the front of the greens but that’s only from watering the greens. The greens were good but some found them hard to putt on; they looked fast but they really weren’t, just a good pace and unfortunately some pins were in bad positions.
The course is coping well with all the rounds that are being played and we had another day today where the course was heavily booked but the starter at least got us away on time, unfortunately it took us well over four hours to complete the round and we never saw a marshall all day.
Two divisions plus the ‘2’s and the best score of the day was returned by the Division 2 winner John Player who had 42 points off his 20 handicap, great golf John. Second was John Stafford with 37, from Noddy Moyle on 36 and fourth was Clint Pingree with 35 points.
Division 1 was won by Sel Wegner with 38 points, from the ever consistent John Cunningham (7) on 37. Third place went to Paul Bourke with 35 points and fourth was John O’Keefe with 34. Both winners lost strokes so check your handicap before playing next.
Two ‘2’s were recorded today by Colin Goon (welcome back) on C8 and Rick Kaban on D2.

Friday podium placers: (from the left) Peter LeNoury, Eddie Beilby, Geoff Doody, John Player, Ron Dickie, Paul Bourke and Tim Knight.

Div A (0-16)
1st Sel Wegner (13) 38pts
2nd John Cunningham (7) 37pts
3rd Paul Bourke (11) 35pts
4th John O’Keefe (16) 34pts
Div B (17+)
1st John Player (20) 42pts
2nd John Stafford (18) 37pts
3rd Noddy Moyle (18) 36pts
4th Clint Pingree (29) 35pts
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Khao Kheow – Stableford
A good turn-out for KK today with the numbers being 27, it was originally full with 28 but unfortunately one player called in sick. We played C & B, in that order and once again the course was the clear winner with some very ordinary scoring, still proving that this course is much tougher than the official rating suggests.
No preferred lies today, but the course was fair to good even though the greens were a little bit slow unlike one month ago.
Welcome back to Vinny Connellan and the Irish lads from Dublin and also welcome to Leigh Fielder having his first game with the Outback; one or two unfamiliar names here at Khao Kheow as the Old Course at Siam is now closed in preparation for the LPGA tournament there which starts on Thursday 21st Feb.
Peter Ennis took Div 1 with a mere 33pts over his Irish mate, Vinny on the same score and big Steve Poznanski got the better of Pat Regan for the minor honours, both with 31.
Div B was won by the 2012 Outback Champion, Suzi Lawton with 34 from Clint Pingree on 29 and Tim Knight also on 29. Today was Suzi’s last game for a couple of weeks as she heads off to South Africa to experience a Safari, visit Sun City and also to travel on a very expensive “Blue Train”. Poor old John who’s meeting her there, travelling from Nigeria where he works, will have to borrow a jacket but I’m not even sure if you two could drink that much champagne!
Thanks Suzi for organising the day and have a great holiday, in the meantime Tim Knight is to help out with the organising, so welcome aboard Tim.
There were six ‘2’s from Stephen Mann, Cav Kenyon, Allen Raaen, Peter Ennis, Jim Bryan & Tim Knight
Div A (0-17)
1st Peter Ennis (13) 33pts
2nd Vinny Connellan (13) 33pts
3rd Steve Poznanski (11) 31pts
Div B (18+)
1st Suzi Lawton (19) 34pts
2nd Clint Pingree (29) 29pts
3rd Tim Knight (22) 29pts
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Siam Plantation – Stableford
One short of a full house of 15 players, played at Siam Plantation on A & C today. The course was as usual in great condition and even though the Sugar Cane (A) greens had been lightly sanded they were still great to putt on.
Some of the tees on Pineapple (C) were back today which made for a better course as sometimes off the whites it can be a little short but when you play Sugar Cane of whites it is still a great challenge.
The day was perfect for golf even if it was a little steamy, but clear skies and a little breeze helped keep conditions pleasant; the pace of play for the first three groups, all four-balls was great with everybody finishing in under four hours but the three-ball at the back got lost and held up the field behind - not good enough for Outbackers and two of the three-ball didn’t even bother to return their cards!
Losing a tooth this week didn’t hold back Rosco on this course he loves, from scoring a brilliant 41pts to win by five from Geoff Stimpson and Craig Poeling both with 36; the remaining podium place going to Colin Goon with 34pts playing off 3.
There were three ‘2’s from David Rose (C8), Geoff Stimpson (A3) & Sel Wegner (A6).
1st Rosco Langoulant (14) 41pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (6) 36pts
3rd Craig Poeling (10) 36pts
4th Colin Goon (3) 34pts
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Pattana – Stableford
This booking at Pattana nearly didn’t happen but for some frantic phone-calls on Monday. The course was originally booked for the Wednesday before (Jan 30th) but due to a tournament, Pattana management had asked General Jack if he could postpone the visit for a week, the only problem was they rebooked for Thursday instead of Wednesday.
Again like Siam, one player short of a full house but nevertheless a great turnout of 27 Outbackers to play on this increasingly popular course which represents very good value for money as well as one that golfers may still walk.
Playing B & C from the yellows, David Davies posted the top score of the day of 40pts to win Div B by three from Noddy Moyles (37) who was having his last game of his two month stay, before returning to Aus later in the week. The day’s organiser, Tim Knight kept up his position in the “Race2Bkk” with a third place today worth another three hundred points.
Div A went to Steve Plant on 39 from one of the visiting Irish lads, Peter Ennis with local Irishman, Pat Regan taking third with 35.
There were four ‘2’s from Peter Erikson, John White & 2 from Pat Regan.
Div A (0-18)
1st Steve Plant (13) 39pts
2nd Peter Ennis (13) 36pts
3rd Pat Regan (12) 35pts
Div B (19+)
1st David Davies (26) 40pts
2nd Noddy Moyle (19) 37pts
3rd Tim Knight (22) 32pts
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
The Outback Bar supported Pattaya Country Club for many years, however following the opening of the back nine on 1st November after being closed for 7 months it was felt that the course did not come up to the standard expected of many of Pattaya golfers. PCC have now announced they will be closing the front nine on March 1st for a similar period.
Whilst the fairways and greens are reasonable the bunkers have sand, the like of which many golfers has not seen before, and the rough is mainly earth – not grass. What is the constant factor at PCC is the efficiency and friendless of the staff – sadly the course does not reach the same standard.
There are however a number of Outbackers – many are long standing PCC members - who continue to play and enjoy the course despite the shortcomings,
Today there were 12 Outbackers split into 2 divisions (up to 18 and 19+). It was ‘Birthday Boy’ Mike Coleman (16) who led the way in ‘A’ division with a fine 37 points, with John Aylott (18) and Bob Pearce following with 30 points.
Doug Chalkley, who has just returned from a nine month stay in the UK, came in top spot in division ‘B’ with 36 points and Jim Payne (28) and Dave Earthrowl (22) following with 34.
It is hoped when all 18 holes open around October the course will be in a condition that Pattaya golfers will want to play!
Friday, Feb. 8,
Green Valley – Stableford

Forty-eight players went to Green Valley for another great day. This course proves to be very popular with not only Outbackers but many others, so it was heavily booked and at this time of the year a slow round is usual, and it was slow today.
The course is showing the wear on the tees from all the rounds but at present the fairways and greens are holding up well; but the greens are slow and two-paced but maybe they hadn’t been cut before we started, however they were reasonably true.
The worst part of Green Valley at the moment is the bunkers as the caddies don’t seem to rake them properly or fix damage done by others. When asked, they shake their head and say not my problem, which really is not good enough.
If I picked up a rake to rake a bunker at Siam Plantation and a marshall saw me then the caddie gets a ‘holiday’ and if she doesn’t do it right she will go back and fix it properly. It’s the golfer’s responsibility to make sure the caddie repairs the damage and maybe it’s time to have another word with the management to ensure that the caddies do their job properly as required by the golfer, for the benefit of the course and of the players following you.
Nothing spectacular on the scoring front as the top score was a mere handicap equalling 36pts from Eddy Beilby to win Div C, from the new “Race2Bkk” leader, John Player with 35. Other notables include Ron Dickie (Div A winner with 35), Peter Murphy (Div B winner with only 32pts & after a 3 way count back) and Div D winner, Tim Knight with just 34.
There were six ‘2’s from Murray Hart & Greg Hill (9th), Steve Plant (12th), and Paul Bourke, Peter LeNoury & David Day all on the 16th.
Div A (0-11)
1st Ron Dickie (8) 35pts
2nd Paul Bourke (11) 33pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (10) 33pts
Div B (12-16)
1st Peter Murphy (13) 32pts
2nd Stephen Mann (12) 32pts
3rd Kev Reid (14) 32pts
Div C (17-19)
1st Eddy Beilby (17) 36pts
2nd John Player (19) 35pts
3rd Greg Hill (18) 33pts
Div D (20+)
1st Tim Knight (22) 34pts
2nd Geoff Doody (24) 33pts
3rd Dick Hobson (23) 32pts

Sullivan back in the winners’ circle

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Monday, Feb. 4, Bangpra – Stableford
Only 15 golfers departing the Ranch today, as a contingent of eight regulars had already headed off to Soi Dao for a two-day competition. We had planned to play a medal round, but because the group was small and comprised predominately of high handicappers, the decision was made to revert to stableford.

Gez Williams takes an early lead in the Golfer of the Month race.
Everything looked quiet as we arrived at the course and we were hoping that maybe we could tee off early, but the starter informed us that a large group of golfers from the hotel were scheduled to tee off before us, and they duly arrived right on time.
After the first hole it was obvious it was going to be a long day and the decision to play stableford turned out to be the right one because the greens were faster than we’ve experienced for some time (some said ever!), and four putts were almost became the norm.
There were 4 groups on the par-3 seventeenth hole when our first group reached there, which just about summed up the day, and the round was eventually completed in just under 5 hours.
Dave Keats won the honours on the day with a modest 31 points, one point ahead of Peter Habgood, and everyone agreed that the poor scores were mainly down to the difficulty of the greens. Dave Keats had 6 “wipes” on his card, so his medal score would have been interesting!
1st Dave Keats (31) 31pts
2nd Peter Habgood (21) 30pts
3rd Gez Williams (17) 28pts
4th Tony Robbins (12) 26pts
Near Pins: Alan Harris, John Hughes, Gary Austin and Peter Habgood.
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Crystal Bay A&B – Medal
The Crystal Bay management had called the day previous to inform us that our scheduled tee time had been put back 20 minutes because they had overbooked, so we set off from the Ranch expecting another long day. In the event we arrived at the course to find it surprisingly quiet, and the starter informed us that we could tee off straight away – before our originally scheduled time – only in Thailand!
There were no holdups throughout the round, and the first four-ball were back in the clubhouse in under 4 hours, which made a very pleasant change from some of our recent rounds.
The course was generally in good shape, but the bunkers are being badly neglected, particularly around the edges, where the unlucky golfer can easily find himself with an almost unplayable lie. When you consider just how pristine this course was kept just a few short years ago, it’s a little bit sad to see it deteriorating, but it’s fair to say that most players still enjoy playing here.
With a field of 24 golfers, the cut was set at 15 and under, and all the best scores were in the B Flight, with Gez Williams and Thomas Nyborg both scoring 38 points, but Gez was declared winner on the count back.
A Flight
1st Alan Harris (10) 35pts
2nd Tony Robbins (12) 34pts
3rd Cyril Wallwork (14) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gez Williams (17) 38pts
2nd Thomas Nyborg (20) 38pts
3rd Raleigh Gosney (18) 36pts
Near Pins: Gary Austin, Tony Robbins, Mark West and Geoff Parker.
Friday, Feb. 8,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford

After reading some horrendous reports of bad management and organization in the Pattaya Mail the previous week, we set off for Pleasant Valley with some trepidation. We arrived to find the course quiet with no shortage of caddies, and we tee’d off on schedule – different day - different experience!
The course was generally in reasonable shape, with good grass on the fairways, but the bunkers are being badly neglected, and the greens were grainy and slow. It has to be said that the management here could make some significant improvements with very little effort or cost, i.e. rake the bunkers, install proper hazard markers and fix the leaking sprinklers.
Having said all that, it turned out to be a pleasant (sic) day, and none more so than for long term absentee Alan Sullivan. Alan was playing his first game with us since the move to The Ranch last August, and proceeded to plunder the pot, winning the A Flight and collecting a near pin prize in the process.
Reg Smart made a welcome return to form, scoring 37 points to win the B Flight, which included 25 points on the back nine – what happened on the front nine Reg?
A Flight
1st Alan Sullivan (12) 39pts
2nd Tony Scambler (8) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Reg Smart (30) 37pts
2nd Tore Eliasson (16) 36pts
3rd John Hughes (18) 36pts
Near Pins: Alan Sullivan, Tony Berry, Tony Scambler and William Macey.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our website at www.bunkersociety.com

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

.

Mham & Bob celebrate a successful week of golf.

Tuesday, Feb. 5, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Treasure Hill under cloudy skies, with a light breeze providing ideal conditions for social golf. Too bad no-one really brought their top games with the best anyone could manage being the 33 points compiled by Martin Hayes (13). Next best was Brian Maddox (21) with 30 points, followed in by several players on 28. Mham did well in the near pins, winning 2, while Owen also got amongst the prizes.
Thursday, Feb. 7, Plutaluang - Stableford
Thursday and a visit to Plutaluang, the West & North combination our allotted test. It was a lot hotter out on the course today, with not much breeze to keep the comfort level reasonable.
Scores were an improvement from Tuesday with Owen Walkley (11) showing the way with 37 points, well clear of Bob Edwards (8) who despite coming home in an ambulance, only 1 point from his last 3 holes, still managed 34 points. Third & fourth needed a count back, which Mham (30) won 16/14 over Clive Hoseason (23), after both signed for 31 points.
Near pins were spread around today with Bob, Clive, Noy & Jeff gaining some financial return. It was good to see we had 4 ladies playing today, along with 1 Silver player.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including Ladies & Seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Kiwi Connection finds winning formula

The Billabong Bar Golf Group

Wednesday top three: JJ Harney, Richard Holmes and Bill Marsden.

Monday, Feb. 4, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Monday our venue was Treasure Hill where the course is in good shape but the greens were like lightning, talk about fast!
We got there and were ready to go off 30 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time, and much to our surprise the starter said you can go now if you want to. We thought it was a bit strange as when we arrived the lady said they were booked solid and pointed out we very early, maybe there were a few no shows.
We were around in 4 hours and there was a slight breeze making perfect conditions for golf. We had 5 groups today, including Dick Mohns back to join us from Canada, and Peter Shuttleworth, Lloyd’s brother who had not seen each other for a few years so there was some good hearted banter between them.
The score’s weren’t very good today with only Brian Maddox playing to handicap. His winning score of 36 points was 7 better than Lloyd Shuttleworth on 29 points, then the old master Bob Pearce off his new handicap of 18, scoring 28 points got third on a count back from Gary Ritchie. Coming in fifth was Capt Bob with 27 on a count back over Peter Shuttleworth, sorry mate.
Once again there were no ‘2’s - I can’t believe that the quality of golfers that play here can’t get a ‘2’ now and again but that’s the way it is.
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Green Valley - Stableford
Today was our usual drive down the 36 road to Green Valley for our Wednesday match. We were told it was fully booked and that we couldn’t increase our tee slots, but on talking to the starter he showed me his sheet and pointed to the 4 groups ahead of us and said they won’t be here so off you go.
Our first group teed off at nine and the last at 9.35, so all went well for a change. Even though they have had some rain at the course it was buggy’s all over so there was no need for ‘lift and place’.
There were some mighty fine scores in also: Midge and his team from Aussie were back for a shot at us and Davo managed to get into the prizes. George Barrie thought it would be prudent to buy the guys who saw his first tee shot a beer to shut them up, enough said on that.
In the winner’s circle from last to first was Davo with 34 points on a count back from John Locke; third was JJ Harney on 35 points, second was Kiwi Bill Marsden on 39 points and first was the man having a red hot streak at the moment, Richard Holmes with 41 points.
There were five ‘2’s coming from JJ Harney, Richard Holmes, Martin Kingswood and Kiwi Bill had two.
Have a great holiday in Africa with the Lawton’s Martin – don’t let John lead you astray too much.
There was also some bad news today as we learned of the passing away of our good friend ‘Gentleman’ George Bishop. I know you will be looking down on us George and saying play well.
Friday, Feb. 8, Plutaluang - Stableford
The Navy course’s East and South layout was the venue for the monthly four-man scramble, and what a fun day out it was. The usual bottles of Sangsom with Birdy coffee mixed in were very tasty indeed!
With 8 teams competing we were off nearly 45 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time as there was nobody there waiting. There were some good scores in with the top two teams each scoring 9 birdies and no bogeies. It was therefore down to the handicap to establish the winners.
The 3rd placed team consisted of JJ Harney, Dave Hausman, Scott Eaton and Pat Kavanagh and their score was 62.2. In second place was the team calling themselves the Courtyard Cavaliers with a net score of 57.6 and their team consisted of Geoff Couch, Jeff North, Dave Done and John Locke, who had trouble with his arm and could only chip and putt on the last nine holes. The winners were the Kiwi Connection of Lloyd Shuttleworth, Peter Shuttleworth, Bill Marsden and Capt Bob with a net score of 56.9.
The next scramble will be on the 18th February and the tee time will be 10.40 am. If you would like to join the Billabong golf group for a round of golf, just turn left at the arch going toward Siam Country Club Old Course - we are 200 yards on the right, or give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

Another shot of ‘Diet Whiskey’

The Backyard Golf Society

Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’ (rear-center) celebrates his win with the staff at Blue Sky Bar.

Well, it appears the high season deluge of golfers has finally drawn to a close, so it was a normal duration round for the Backyard lads at Emerald last Friday. It was enjoyable to actual tee off on time and not to see a few extra groups shunted in front of us.
Only 2 groups out today as a few members regressed and played with the Slimy crew, one other was in discussions with the Sultan about work in Brunei, and JJ took a week off after a recent mechanical inspection found the cause of his sore leg.
The big winner today was Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’, his 41 points blitzing the rest of the group. The worrying aspect is that Dan is also our handicap man so we will have to make sure he gets a decent cut this time, in contrast to the outcome from his previous 43 point score a few weeks back. A general play deduction must surely be applied this time?
Whiskey was also the big winner in the skins with 7 while Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend won 4, Irish John and Yaya’s Delight won 2 each and there are 3 roll-overs to next week. The near-pin was won by El Tel.
Not many interesting stories from today’s round apart from ‘The Quiet Man’s exfoliation exhibition in the club-house bar after the round and the caddy’s amusement with Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend’s rear end gyrations on every tee. Seems he moves it much like Tom Jones did in his heyday?

Miller & Gelten share the spoils

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with staff members from The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Phoenix – Stabelford
High season seems to have come to an early end so far. The course was quite empty when it came to our turn for tee off times today and apart from two idiots who thought it would be a good idea to sit at the drinks stop until the next group started to walk off the previous green, and then stop on the green to make a couple of phone calls whilst we were waiting on the tee, our round was trouble free and all completed in a little over 4 hours. Quite something at this time of the year

In ‘A’ Flight today Joe Miller returned the best score of 39 points to claim first place and the voucher donated by Ann’s Salon. Second place went to Mukesh Thakker with 38 points and in third was Sergio Poggi, who sadly did not return to The Relax Bar for the presentation so his prize went into the lucky draw.
In ‘B’ Flight Goort Gelten scored a good 37 points to claim first place, with Patrick Browne second on 32 Gerry Hughes in third with the same score.
Near pins were won by Joe Miller, Gerry Hughes, Colin Gregg and Mike Gerrard.
The lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) went to Bob Neylon, Rodney Gregg, Jim Neilson & Harvey Trewarn.
I have to finish on a very sad note. On the 17th tee Richard Baldwin topped his drive very low and straight and unfortunately a small pigeon type bird never saw the ball coming. Next thing a shower of feathers exploded into the air and poor bird lay there dead. We have reported Richard to the local police who have issued a statement saying if he had done it with a gun they would have arrested him. As it is, they have decided to ask Phoenix Golf Club to print his name on the honours board for getting a birdie without completing the hole!
Friday, Feb. 8, Phoenix - Stableford
It was the 3G show on Friday, our three main winners Christian names all beginning with ‘G’. In first place was Granville Swanton who returned a score of 42 points, only for it to be adjusted to 41. However this was still good enough to push Gerry Hughes into second place by way of count back on the back nine. Way behind, but still claiming third place was Graham (Elsie) Ellis with a mere 35 points.
After killing a bird on Tuesday, Richard Baldwin continued on his murderess ways today in a very similar fashion to Tuesday. On the Mountain 7th hole, par 5, he again topped his ball very true and hard into the front of the lake, striking a fish that had just come for a breath of oxygen and knocking it clean out of the water. We were told afterwards that he was a little short of money this week and had not had a good meal. It all sounds very fishy and foul to me!
Call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 if you are interested in playing at Phoenix. Also if you like sea fishing we go out on the ocean every two weeks (usually on a Saturday) and bring back lots of lovely fish for the freezer.

It’s Barry - in a photo finish

B Flight
1st Barry Tregurtha (18) net 67
2nd Eddy Beilby (18) net 72
3rd Dave Driscoll (15) net 74
C Flight
1st Jez Lees (19) net 72
2nd Ronny Walfridsson (23) net 76
3rd John Deardon (19) net 78
Near Pins: No 4 Erwin Haffiner, No 9 Jez Lees, No 12 Dave Driscoll, No 16 Dave Shelton
Sunday’s medal winner - Barry Tregurtha.

Green Valley is typically set up in a forgiving configuration for the weekly Sunday outing; that is forward tees, but even that can not dampen the quality of Barry Tregurtha with a sparkling net 67 that won B Flight and the monthly medal for Feb 2013. Barry was also awarded the lead crystal cut glass and a bottle of Jameson’s whiskey. Needles to say, Barry’s Name will be etched on the Lewiinski’s wall of shame.
Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby was perched on the second tier of the podium with a creditable even par round. Dave Driscol had played a steady game as he took the bronze, accompanied with a near pin and a 2.
‘The Principle’ was playing near his best as he took the C Flight honours with a steady even par game. He also collected a near pin and a 2. Ronnie Walfridsson with a net 67 return took the silver as John Deaden’s tips from Yui paid off as he out raced Jan Johansson and Barry Oats for the remaining flight spot.
Aussie Clint Hazlet, who is establishing himself as a very consistent player in A Flight, took the top spot with a rock solid net 68. Clint was followed up the podium steps by Peter ‘the right honorable’ LeNoury with a net 71 as ‘Broad more’ Newell (he had to be there) closed the flight with a steady even par round.
The scribe turned out to play today with long time friends Brian Lewis and Sonny Crawford. It was great to meet up again - pity the standard of golf remains the same as all three of us carded no returns.
Pierre Bietry was the third member to pocket a very healthy 2.
Monday, Feb. 4, Greenwood A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pen Caruthers (14) 39pts
2nd Peter Kelly (9) 36pts
3rd Ian Dallas (9) 35pts
B Flight
1st David Dunne (19) 36pts
2nd Gerry Roche (20) 35pts
3rd Fergus O’Brien (25) 34pts
It was off to one of the most entertaining venues, the Wolveridge and Thomson designed Greenwood, for the day and nobody was more entertained than Pen Caruthers who not only eclipsed the senior flight by three points but also garnered one of the four 2’s on the day.
Irish men took control of B Flight, headed by steady and omnipresent David Dunne with a fine even par round. Gerry Roche and the jovial Fergus O’Brien were stringed out in one stroke increments in that order.
Jim Bell, Terry Mangan and Ron O’Keefe shared the ‘2’s pot with Pen.
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Watson (3) 36pts
2nd Pat Duane (10) 34pts
3rd Peter Lenoury (10) 31pts
4th Dave Shelton (8) 30pts
B Flight
1st Athur Busch (17) 34pts
2nd Nick Odnoral (16) 33pts
3rd Billy Briton (15) 32pts
4th Chris Barrett (14) 32pts
C Flight
1st Sean Soden (21) 32pts
2nd John Heaney (19) 32pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (20) 30pts
4th Bill Peach (23) 29pts
Bob Watson started the day with glee as he noted that he had made it to 2-5 on the latest handicap sheet. Well irony of ironies, Bob didn’t need that extra shot as he headed A Flight and the marauding primates with 2 shots to spare over Pat Duane. Peter ‘the right honorable’ LeNoury a further three shots back picked up the bronze, as the on-form Dave Shelton closed the flight.
Sean Soden found his winning ways but had to rely on all his luck in a count back with fellow Irishman John Heaney as both were locked on 32 points. Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw with 30 points was good for the bronze, as Englishman William Peach tided up the flight and stopped the Irish boys in their tracks.
The middling flight saw old friend Arthur Busch atop the podium with 34 points. Nick ‘always there or there abouts’ Odnoral took the silver a shot back.
Billy Briton, and nice guys Chris Bassett and Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry, were a further shot back but alas the nice guys finished fourth and nowhere, especially when you’re up against the guile of Billy Briton in a count back.
Pat Duane, Les Cobban, Nick Ordinal and Tom Gorey divvied up the 2’s pot.
Friday, Feb. 8, Plutaluang - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jerry McCarthy (13) 38pts
2nd Bob Watson (3) 37pts
3rd Pat Duane (10) 36pts
4th Les Cobban (9) 35pts
B Flight
1st Roland Bangerter (18) 35pts
2nd Ken Blinco (17) 34pts
3rd Jeff Horsfield (14) 33pts
4th Colin Davis (18) 32pts
C Flight
1st Brian Cooper (28) 36pts
2nd Jorn Finnerup (28) 34pts
3rd Per Brandisford (22) 34pts
4th Torben Oen (27) 33pts
It was off to Plutaluang navy course today on what was an unusually hot day for this time of year. Not hot enough to hinder Irishman Jerry McCarthy though, nor the red hot thunder from down under Bob Watson, as they were the only two players to better par on the day to finish first and second in the premier flight on 38 and 37 points respectively. Jerry’s fine score included two 2’s.
Pat Duane’s solid even par round took third as Les Cobban filled the flight a further shot back.
In a very competitive and tight B Flight it was Roland Bangerter who triumphed on 35 points, so beating runner up in the flight Ken Blinco by a single shot. Ken in turn beat Jeff Horsfield by the same margin as Jeff did the same to ‘the Donkey’ as Colin closed the flight.
In C Flight Brian ‘mini Cooper found even par good enough for the top spot. Brian was two shots clear of Jorn Finnerup and Per Brandisford with Jorn having the more favorable inward nine. Torben Oen completed the day’s podium places with 33 points.
Reg McKay, Barry Copestake, Jim Bell and Barry Elphick shared the 2’s pot with Jerry.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

A full house at Khao Kheow

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday winners, Steve Hamstad and Rita Zoebeli.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Khao Kheow – Stableford
We were packed out to such an extent that I had to phone the boss at Khao Kheow the previous Friday to increase our booking and they still slipped in. So on the Tuesday morning it was packed at Bert’s as the players signed in and we got them into transport. Still, all safely aboard, we were soon underway to the course.
We booked in and were soon to the start, which we were informed would be the C Nine, soon to be followed by the B Nine. ,We were away a bit early, and as we started at 1045 it was a good job as we were behind our normal time.
The course was very full and we followed close behind the group in front. The weather was fine, if a bit hot and windy, however the course was in good condition, and I suppose we made good time. The greens were in good shape and the fairways also.
Soon around, it was time to have a cold shower and go upstairs to the fine restaurant. The food here is excellent and the views over the course have to be seen. However, having a relaxing time must come to an end and so it was back to Bert’s, even if a bit late.
Soon it was time for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Steve Hamstad with 38 points ahead of a three-way count back on 34 points that saw Dave Nicholson in second, Max Scott in third and Brian Parish in fourth.
In the B Flight the winner was Rita Zoebeli with 38 points ahead of Brian Gabe in second with 36 points and Jack Robertson in third with 33 points. In fourth was Tom Cotton with 30 points ahead of Keith Phillips on count back.
Near Pins: Richard Kubicki, Steve Hamstad, Dave Nicholson, Bob Watson, Tom Cotton (2).
Long Putts: Richard Kubicki, Mashi, Jack Robertson, Paul Alford
Friday, Feb. 8,
Century Chonburi – Stableford
Really not a lot to say, but sometimes it just happens. So, a course well laid out, at the end of a road that I will not take my car to, although Dick says you can go the back way, which is bad but not as bad.
This course has great potential, but unfortunately fails to achieve it. Throw in a clubhouse that is akin to a no show and that says it all. However, the green fee and the caddy fee make this a must if you just want a day out in the sun chasing a little white ball and you really cannot afford better.
So back at Bert’s it was time for the results. The winner with 36 points was Joel Flor ahead of a count back on 33 points that saw Mike Gaussa in second and Don Carmody in third. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Brian Gabe, Don Carmody, Paul Alford, Mark O’Callaghan.

Farewell to a friend

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Steve Ellison
Monday, Feb. 4, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Dave Mather (8) 39pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (13) 38pts
3rd Phil Smedley (13) 36pts
4th Peter Le Noury (10) 36pts

Michael Hastie and Tom Breslin.

It was going to turn out to be a sad day here at The Golf Club as today proved to be the last round for ‘Gentleman’ George Bishop. George passed away just 12 hours after finishing his game at Green Valley and went out as he would have wanted it. George was well loved here and his presence will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Linda and Gogo who have handled this situation with great elegance. Rest in peace my friend.
Wednesday, Feb. 6, The Emerald (white tees) – Stableford
1st Michael Hastie (19) 37pts
2nd Tom Breslin (24) 36pts
3rd Paul Mades (24) 35pts
The Emerald sure has had its ups and downs of late, and now we find the course in acceptable condition for today’s play. This course is great value, so I do understand the financial balance between a budget green fee and the salaries of a fully staffed maintenance crew. It’s a tough balancing act and our PSC rate of 800 baht in the high season is hard to fault.

Arlen Wardene, Per Aschan & Phil Smedley après-golf.

Michael Hastie is still on a roll! Fresh from his January Monthly Medal win and his usual consistent play, Michael is proving to be hard to beat and more power to him! Well played mate. Tom Breslin was right behind with 36 points and Paul Mades, who no longer keeps a penthouse condo in Kabul, brought up the rear with a third place on the podium.
Friday, Feb. 8, Silky Oak (white tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (13) 41pts
2nd Per Aschan (8) 39pts
3rd Arlen Wardene (25) 38pts
According to their website description, the Silky Oak is an Australian pine tree with leaves of a silvery-grey colour that catch the eye when blowing in the wind. To be honest, I am still surprised when the card has a full signup sheet for this course, but many requests to keep it on the schedule have proven the popularity of this unique golf course.
It is funny how we evaluate a golf course, and when we have a better than average round there, it oddly enough tends to get high marks! It would seem that Silky Oak would fall into the category of a very playable and forgiving golf course. We played a 5,990 yard length track and with the wind factor in play, it was the correct decision. The greens were neither fast nor slow and rolled true and fair.
Our fearless Captain, Phil Smedley, shot the best round of the day and had one of his best rounds this year. 41 points was his total and he walked away with the top spot for today’s comp. Visiting us from Sweden, Per Aschan shot a fine 39 and our Monthly Medal winner for December, Arlen Wardene, finished third with a very respectable 38 Stableford points.
Thanks for joining us for another great week of golf in Pattaya, a golfers paradise!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Debut win for Wilsher

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Emerald on Monday, 4th February to play a stableford competition on the popular course which was well prepared. The single flight struggled with the strong breeze and scores were surprising lower than expected.
Sharing fourth place were Alan Flynn, Dave Lehane, Dennis Lea and Jack Robertson, all with 33 points. John Chelo went one better for third place and the winning duo was Niall Caven and Mike Wilsher, the latter taking his first win in more than twelve months playing with the group.
For the third round in a row Dave Lehane collected a birdie ‘2’, this time on the tough fifth hole and he was joined in a share of the pot by Pete Sumner who scored a fine ‘2’ on the thirteenth.
Mike Earley picked up Rabbi’s free beer prize and the Booby Bevy went to Dave Lehane for his split figures of 13-20 despite Mike Wilsher’s claim when he signed for a handicap lower than he in fact had. It was a reminder to all to check their handicaps before teeing off.
Nothing to chose between Caven and Flynn
On Wednesday, 6th February the Pattaya Golf Society visited the Pattana complex to play a stableford competition on the B and C nines which were in their usual exemplary condition. Unusually the competition was played from the yellow tees which made the round much more ‘customer friendly’ and the comment from a moderate handicapper that it was “good to play irons into the par fours, and not woods” justified the choice.
The single flight saw the ‘2’s pot shared by Niall Caven, Mike Earley, Alan Flynn, Ron Rigden and, for the fourth consecutive round Dave Lehane.
Third place was shared by Mike Earley, Larry Slattery and Ken Grimes, on 36 points whilst Alan Flynn and Niall Caven shared the top honours with 37 points each.
Rabbi’s free beer draw went to Leigh Abbey and the Booby Bevy went to John Pearce for his low score of the day.
An earlier than normal start had helped travellers and the general feeling was that Pattana had again provided the PGS with another almost perfect golf day. All thanks are due to “Rabbi” for his efforts in running the show in the absence of the PGS golf geezer Mr Len.
Impressive stuff from Takano
The Pattaya Golf Society ended another week with a visit to Greenwood on Friday, 8th February to play a stableford competition on the B and A nines. The course has improved significantly over the last few months and it has become popular with farang and Asian golfers alike and on this day the later groups checking in found they were allowed to play with no caddies.
In the second flight Alan Flynn posted 31 points for third place, a couple behind Aussie golfer Leigh Abbey, enjoying another good day with the group. The flight winner with 34 points was Martin Hennessy, so often the journeyman golfer, proving the adage that “everyone golfer has their day” and it was thoroughly well deserved.
In the top flight all leaders came from the same playing group with Rick Schramm taking third place with 33 points, Dave Edwards taking second with 36 and Masa Takano easily winning the tussle with 38 points and the best gross of the day, 76 shots.
Dave Edwards secured the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on the challenging A2 par three and the failure to register a fifth consecutive birdie ‘2’ left Dave Lehane with the Booby Bevy.
Greenwood was a fine way to end the golfing week with the PGS.

Monte makes second career hole-in-one

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

(Left to Right): Doug Maiko, Dave Richardson and Jack Robertson.

Monday, Feb. 4, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
We were at Mountain Shadow for the second time in 4 days and we were off the first tee 30 minutes early under sunny skies and with a nice breeze. The course was in fine condition and showing no signs of the heavy rain of the previous week. It was busy but we moved right along and were back in the clubhouse in 4 hours and 30 minutes where welcomes went out to Bob Edwards, Dan Oshiro, Ray Gott and Jim Carrick and a goodbye to our old friend Koji Yamada, heading back to Kobe.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and a full bevy of pins. The big news on the day was a hole in one by Monte Sykes on the short 5th, only his second and both witnessed by the scribe almost 2 years to the day since the first one.
Ted Morris won the A Flight with a fine 40 points, Monte Sykes was second on 37, and always in the mix was Mike Allidi in third with 36 points ahead of Don Richardson in fourth.
Jesper Rasmussen topped the B Flight with 36 points while Graham Buckingham came second on 32, Elias Magnusson third with 31 and Ray Gott fourth on 30.

Thursday, Feb. 7, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Crystal bay A&B loops today and we teed off 10 minutes in perfect weather conditions. The course was in very good shape but with some fairways a bit firm.
The first group (a three-ball) was back in the clubhouse in 4 hours, with the rest of the field seemingly in a different time zone. Welcomes went out to Pekka Mustonen and Kalle Jaskara from Finland and Henning Olsen from Denmark.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and the full monty of pins. Doug Maiko won the A Flight on a count back from Mike Allidi in second, both on 37 points, while Kjeld Ravn came third with 36 and Mashi Kaneta, always in the mix, was fourth with 33.

Kelly stands tall at Mountain Shadow

IPGC golf from The Tara Court

Sunday, Feb. 3, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
On Sunday we were back at Mountain Shadow. We had our largest group to date so we decided to have three divisions, Blue, White and Ladies. It was a beautiful day for golf, hazy and not too hot so even the new people who had just arrived from Ireland at the weekend found it very comfortable.

Terry Kelly.
Because this course is difficult the scoring was not great and only one person played better than his handicap and that was off the Blue tees. Terry Kelly was the man who had a very creditable 37pts followed by Peter Murphy with 34. In third place was Don Byrne winning on a count back with 33 from Sean Connolly. Don had just arrived from Ireland on Saturday with his wife Pauline who won the Ladies with 35pts. No jet lag there!
Theresa Byrne was second in the Ladies with 29pts. Theresa had also just arrived at the weekend and was on her first game this year.
The White division was won by Joe Peters with 30pts and in second was Andy Galvin with 28.
Back at O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant we said goodbye to Ritchie Martin and Brian Lalor who were both going back to sunny Ireland.
Blue Tees
1st Terry Kelly (15) 37pts
2nd Peter Murphy (13) 34pts
3rd Don Byrne (15) 33pts
4th Sean Connolly (10) 33pts
White Tees
1st Joe Peters (20) 30pts
2nd Andy Galvin (18) 28pts
Ladies
1st Pauline Byrne (29) 35pts
2nd Theresa Byrne (26) 29pts
‘2’s: Sean Connolly, Gerry Hannan, Peter Murphy

Tuesday, Feb. 5, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Crystal Bay was the challenge today where we played the C and A courses. It was our first time to play the C course for a long time and it was a nice change. For some of our group it was their first time to play it but it didn’t stop them from coming in with very good scores off the white tees.

Pauline Byrne.

It was a beautiful day for golf, cloudy and not too hot which suits a lot of our players as they are not used to hot weather where they have just came from! At one stage it looked very much like rain with very dark clouds but thankfully it blew away and nobody got wet.
Teddy Lodge was on top of the podium with an excellent 40pts followed by Sean Connolly with 39. Back in form again in third place was Frank McGowan with 37 and in fourth place, in what will be his last time with us for a while was Darren Murphy with 35. Peter Murphy came in fifth with 34pts and also got the only 2 of the day.
Back in O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant we said goodbye to both Darren Murphy and Alan O’Connell, both of whom are returning to Ireland. After the presentation the Murphy twins, Darren and Keith, with the help of some others entertained everyone with a good sing song until the early hours of the morning.
1st Teddy Lodge (10) 40pts
2nd Sean Connolly (10) 39pts
3rd Frank McGowan (17) 37pts
4th Darren Murphy (23) 35pts
5th Peter Murphy (13) 34pts
‘2’s: Peter Murphy
Thursday, Feb. 7, Eastern Star - Stableford
A slightly smaller group today went to Eastern Star as some of our friends were playing in Laem Chabang instead. The course was in reasonable condition but some of the greens are badly in need of repair with some very bad patches on a lot of them. Otherwise it was ok and the temperature was nice and not too hot.
Pat Culloty had a comfortable win with 38pts followed by Terry Kelly on 35. John McNamara had his first podium spot with us, coming in third with 34pts and Theresa Connolly beat Joe Peters on a count back to claim fourth.
There were no ‘2’s so a carry over to Sunday at Mountain Shadow.
1st Pat Culloty (20) 38pts
2nd Terry Kelly (15) 35pts
3rd John McNamara (24) 34pts
4th Theresa Connolly (24) 30pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratannak Rd around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George on 087 540 0844 and he will book you in.

Dinan dominates the field

PSC golf from the Growling Swan

Thursday winners Ebrahim (left) and Roy Dayton (right) flank NAGA award recipient Bill Clarke.

The Drut
Monday, Feb. 4, Pattana - Stableford
Twenty three golfers were in attendance today eager to test their skills on the classy Pattana golf course. The starter pulled the trigger and the first group were away at 1010 hours. Playing the B and C nines from the yellow tees they completed the journey in four hours and thirty minutes.
The weather was fine with a cooling breeze whilst the course was in superb condition and the greens putted truly.
Pre-tournament favourite Max Bracegirdle bypassed all practice facilities as he considers the game too easy and commented, “There must be a way to toughen it up”. The same gent handed in twenty eight points.
On the fifteenth tee with scores close, one player in the leading group said, “It’s not over until the rotund lady warms up the vocal chords”. Martin Todd responded with, “Well zip up your corset darling because you’re on next.”
We said a big G’day to Frank (Pakko) Waterhouse, Bill Wilkinson and Bill Clark from the old dart and Piere Cere from Quebec in Canada. It was hoo roo to Bernie McCart who is returning to Australia for business reasons.
In the A grade Patrick Engels showed the way to score thirty six points and take first place. Second spot went to Alain Taddei with thirty five points whilst Ebrahim garnered thirty four to relegate Mike Gosden on thirty three to fourth.
In the B grade seventy-seven year old Kevin Dinan played much like a politician fielding voters’ questions, i.e. with skill and dexterity, to post a great forty two points and win easily.
The minor places went to Bernie McCart on thirty six points, with Brad Todd on thirty two and Pekka Mustonen with thirty rounding out the podium.

The NAGA was won by Pat Kavanagh who made it in to double figures. It would appear the gene pool is in need of chlorine.
Once again Deefa the dog was paraded and collected funds for the needy children of Pattaya and the players are thanked for their generosity.
Regular readers of this column may recall that three months ago one gent predicted that the baht would drop from 31 to 25 to the Aussie dollar in the near future. It didn’t, however he did the right thing and devoured the pie with great relish. Well done Stu!
Thursday, Feb. 7, Treasure Hills – Stableford
Twenty-nine golfers were in attendance today anticipating a solid examination of their game at the challenging Treasure Hills layout. They weren’t disappointed.
Action man Sandy Leiper made a comment, that despite the course being tougher than picking fly dung out of black pepper he was going to hand in a great score. Time would tell.
Change room chatter is always interesting when gun wordsmith Graham Buckingham is in attendance, and today was no different. He was of the opinion that he could make a nuclear bomb out of a barker’s egg and two sticks as long as someone could keep the flies away. Nice call Buckers!
Fred Dineley who is returning to Australia for a short break was farewelled.
Playing from the yellow tees the first group hit off at 0950 hours and completed the journey in four hours and twenty minutes. It was hot with very little breeze and cloudy conditions were the order of the day. The course was in good condition and the greens a little slower than usual.
In the A grade Ebrahim handed in thirty six points which included a back nine of twenty three to sit atop the podium. Back after a break of a few weeks was Stu Rifkin who also had thirty six points with a back nine of twenty two. Mike Gosden with thirty three finished third whilst Jayson Schembri and Colin Faraday both on thirty two rounded out the grade.
In the B grade Roy Dayton handed in thirty four points to show the way comfortably from Fred Dineley on thirty points. In third place was Stephen Newton on twenty nine points whilst Kevin Dinan with twenty eight and Max Bracegirdle on twenty seven made the podium.
Looking at the scores it would appear the course was harder than Chinese arithmetic.

Bill Clarke had his money’s worth which resulted in him being the recipient of the NAGA award. He commented that his round was about as useful to the game of golf as ankle supports were to Douglas Bader.
Deefa the dog once more collected donations for the needy children of Pattaya and everyone was thanked for their generosity.
The scribe would take this opportunity to thank Martin Todd for his invaluable assistance correlating the cards and Stu Rifkin’s skill as a shutterbug. Sadly Sandy Leiper could only muster twenty three points.
Drut Note: Golf develops a beginner’s self control. Caddying for a beginner develops it even more.

Caddy shortage strikes again

Monday, Feb. 4, Mountain Shadow (blue tees) - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Phil Groves (7) 33pts
2nd Jukka Koskela (7) 32pts
3rd Kevin Townsend (12) 32pts

2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 28pts
3rd Ole Stamnes (27) 27pts
Red Division
1st Kiti Ulvio- Peltalonen (9) 27pts
2nd Saara Halko (19) 24pts

Don Everett.
Once again a caddy shortage meant that the reserved tee time passed while the whole group awaited the arrival caddies to either finish an earlier round or were called up from home, sick bed, auntie’s house or even the gardeners shed to make up the numbers. Eventually everyone had one and when play commenced the rounds were completed in good time and all finished the round before darkness fell - but only just.
In view of the shortages to be found on many courses at the moment, it may be time for the East Coast Golf Courses Committee to make some hard decisions with regard to compulsory caddies, which in most cases are just green-keeping staff employed to fill divots, rake bunkers, repair pitch marks and of course collect a requisite amount of coarse grass, and allow golfers out without one per player. The prediction is that “the first course to dispense with compulsory caddies, and re-organise green keeping, will sweep the market in Pattaya.”

Mike Korney.
Once again a good turnout required the formation of four divisions including a red one and with just one player making the mark of within two of handicap, the CSS moved out to 75 and the day became a non-counting event for upward review.
In the first division Phil Groves reached the top step again after stalling through the last four holes from which he gleaned just four points, but he still won by the slimmest of margins ahead of a count back for second place won by Jukka Koskela with a better 18 to 12, leaving Kevin Townsend in third after he had finished the front nine with 20 points.
The second division was taken by Vincent Gras whose best score of the day earned him a future reduction in handicap, even though he had played to his existing handicap as the CSS had moved up by three. Second place was taken by Kari Peltalonen with Alwyne Burley a distant third.
The third division winner was Don Everett whose modest score was still a good margin ahead of second and third, which were won by Terry Hodgkiss and Ole Stamnes respectively.
The red division went to serial winner Kiti Ulvio-Peltalonen ahead of Saara Halko once again in second.

Phil Groves.
The first division 2’s pool was shared between Jukka Koskela, Harri Ingman, Kevin Townsend and Kiti Ulvio-Peltalonen with two while the massive second division pot was taken at long last by John Wheeler on the 149 yard fifteenth with a solid driver to ten feet and an even more solid chip in. Following the presentation and in recognition of this outstanding feat, John generously ordered drinks all round before struggling to squeeze the balance of his winnings into his wallet.
Before the prize giving there were welcomes for new members Christopher Setchell and Raye Cullen and welcome backs for Zac Philipps, Vincent Gras, Ron Rigden, John Pearce and Konrad Klama.
Following the installation of the new cricket alter at the center of the trophy display unit, made possible with the donation of Caps from both Australia and England cricket teams by Mike Hill, the usual display of the Ashes Urn, which now resides in the center of the alter, has been dispensed with and new member and returnees from Australia are just directed towards the display.

Vincent Gras.

Wednesday, Feb. 6, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–20)

1st Mike Korney (20) 36pts
2nd Masanori Takano (6) 34pts
3rd Bill Hurd (20) 34pts
Division 2 (21+)
1st Don Everett (22) 32pts
2nd Hal Hart (24) 28pts
3rd Tom Hillner (24) 27pts
It seems that The Emerald is not as popular as it used to be, which must surely be down to the fact that the fairways are almost all crab grass. Even with the use of the local rule of ‘lift and place’, the lower handicaps are definitely shunning the course at the moment. But with the greens in excellent condition given that this day they were slower than usual, and the rest of the course neat and tidy, golf can still be enjoyed by many players of varying handicap levels.

 Chris Setchell.

So with a lower turnout of just two divisions, with the cut coming at a higher than usual twenty and below, Mike Korney topped the first division with a level handicap round that was good enough by two ahead of Masanori Takano, after the latter had won a count back over Bill Hurd with a better 16 to 11. Bill had started out the day looking like the winner with 25 points after ten holes but then inexplicably slipped in three zero pointers.
The second division was led in by Don Everett, again with a slightly better return than the last one and finishing well ahead of Hal hart in second. A count back for third place between Tom Hillner and Seppo Sadeharju saw Tom emerge the better by a score of 17 to 12.
Bill Hurd slipped in the only 2 in the second division during his blistering opening nine holes, just a couple of days too late, while Masanori Takano took the first division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Michael Belbin prior to the presentations.
Friday, Feb. 8, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Phil Mitchell (7) 37pts
2nd Jens Gunnarsson (15) 36pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 34pts
Division 2 (16-22)
1st Chris Setchell (17) 39pts
2nd Rick Holmes (19) 37pts
3rd Walter O’Keefe (16) 37pts
Division 3 (23+)
1st Mike Hill (23) 40pts
2nd Ole Stamnes (27) 30pts
3rd Markku Tynell (26) 29pts
Red Division
1st Marti Juutilainen (20) 34pts
2nd Kiti Ulvio-Peltonen (9) 29pts
Once again back to big numbers and again too many golfers for too few caddies as the course managements struggle to attract the numbers of people required for the high season. But it would appear that at least this management are proposing to do something about this sorry state of affairs by raising the caddy fee sometime soon, no doubt to coincide with the start of the low season and cheaper green fee prices so that impact is hardly noticed.
Unfortunately on this day the lack of personnel meant a longer than expected wait on the tee as has become almost a given on most courses.
The manager wisely allowed some golfers in carts to play without a caddy, and some groups utilised one caddy between two players, which is allowed by the group as caddies are not considered part of the golfer’s equipment under a local rule because players are usually not able to pick or choose them.
With what are now the more usual four divisions, and which looks to be lasting at least for another couple of weeks, including a red division again, the tee was pretty crowded, but everyone got away eventually and the rounds progressed at the normal four and a half hours.
The first division was headed by Phil Mitchell with a solid one under handicap round that was only his second competition round away from Green Valley in nine months - so not much local knowledge to draw on there and therefore a very good result. Just one behind was Jens Gunnarsson on level handicap and Phil Groves a further two back in third.
The second division was taken by Chris Setchell who had a very tidy round of three under handicap that was good by two to head a two-way count back between Rick Holmes and Walter O’Keefe, which Rick won with a better 19 to 18. Don Everett had been vying for a third win a week but sadly fell away after a bright start to finish well down the pack.
Mike Hill led in the third division with the best score of the day which ensured that at last his wish of a lower handicap will be realized, also there is the hope that this progression will continue. Ole Stamnes took his second placing of the week by holding second place ahead of Markku Tynell by the slimmest of margins.
Martti Juutilainen took the red division breaking the stranglehold of Kiti Ulvio-Peltalonen who had to settle for second on this occasion.
Phil Groves made up for missing out being higher in his division by taking the first division 2’s pool with the only one, while Vincent Gras, Rick Holmes and Chris Setchell shared the second division pot.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Toni Nicholls, who was very pleased to be back and to see the new cricket alter.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Pattaya archers donate to local children’s charity

Allan Jones (center-right) presents a cheque for 25,000 baht to Khun Toy of the CPDC.

Members of Pattaya Archery Club collected and recently presented a total of 25,000 baht to representatives of the local Child Protection and Development Center (CPDC). All 30 members of the archery club contributed to this gift, as did some retired members.
A cheque for the total amount was presented by the archery club’s Treasurer, Allan Jones, on behalf of the club, to Khun Toy, the CPDC’s Director. She was accompanied by Scheree Wilkie, a volunteer helper, and a number of the CPDC’s children
Allan was a key player in the club’s collection of this money and, helped by club member Gilbert Pelissier, organised everything to make this presentation.
Set against the backdrop of “The Great Wall of Pattaya” the presentation ceremony was held in the club’s range. This is part of the facilities provided by the Pattaya Shooting & Adventure Park in Hua Yai. A number of archers were present as well as some of the children supported by the CPDC
The project of a Child Protection and Development Center was started by the Human Help Network Foundation which has three projects, two in South Africa and one in Thailand.

Archery coaching for the children.

The concept of the CPDC is a holistic one and consists of several parts all contributing to an effective help for children and fight against human trafficking, sexual abuse and especially child prostitution. The CPDC is located at some distance from the town of Pattaya; this helps to insulate the children from the dangers that they are exposed to on the streets.
The seven acre site is in a semi-rural area, allowing the children more room to escape from pressures and be at ease. The project currently consists of six residential houses, each housing eight children and a supervisor; a site office; a nursery; and some farm land, including a newly built mushroom farm and aquaculture facilities. Just completed are the shower block, the dining sala, the education center (including classrooms and a library) and a basketball court.
The number of children permanently living in the center currently varies between 35 and 45. Many of them have faced abuse, humiliation or extreme poverty before coming to live at the center.

Holding a bow for the first time.
The children attend public schools in the surrounding area. To support the children’s development, the education center is available to offer remedial classes, vocational training and support with homework.
A further part of the CPDC’s facilities is the nursing unit, which offers medical treatment for the children living at the center and also for children from poor families, who cannot afford proper healthcare for their children. A nurse is available to help in case of emergencies.
After the cheque was presented, some children from the CPDC were invited to have-a-go at archery and several intrepid volunteers were found.
Several club members joined Eric Hearn, the club’s coach, in helping the children understand the basics of archery, and good fun was had by all - even if most arrows went into the grass and not the targets!
For many years the archery range at the Pattaya Shooting and Adventure Park had a wall and straw bales at the end of the range, to stop arrows escaping from the range. This wall was three metres high and limited the range to a maximum distance of 50 metres.
As the archery skills of the club’s members improved, it eventually became apparent that if the range could be extended to 70 metres, this would be a much greater challenge, especially as it was the distance of the Olympic archery competitions.
The management of the shooting park were approached and kindly agreed to build an extension to the range, extending it to 70 metres. This necessitated the removal of the 50 metre end-wall, also a concrete floor of 21 metres by 4 metres, and a very large tree. This was a major project and took several months to complete.
Behind the new 70 metre end-wall is a stable for the park’s horses and a work area for the park’s staff. Naturally any escaping arrows would be extremely dangerous for those behind the wall, and so the end-wall was built up to a height of about six metres, with several rows of straw bales half-way up the wall, ready to stop any stray arrows flying really high.
To stop low-flying arrows, the archery club bought some professional archery backstop netting, which took four people several hours just to erect it.
The horses and workers are safe 6 and 70 metre Olympic-style archery competitions in Pattaya are now very popular with club members.
Pattaya Archery Club shoots on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 10.00 am and finishing at about noon or thereafter. Anyone % Thai or farang, young or old, man or woman % is welcome to come along to the Pattaya Shooting Park in Hua Yai and find out what it is all about. Beginners’ coaching is held on a Tuesday and / or a Saturday. The coach’s services and the use of the club’s bows, arrows and other equipment are free for beginners, and so it costs nothing to see if this challenging sport is for you.

Vorontsov’s four-goal salvo ensures win for City

Bangkok Casuals Football League 2012/13

Paul Frain
With a change of fixture last weekend, Pattaya City in 6th place played 4th place Bangkok in the capital and were looking forward to having the opportunity to climb further up the table.
City nearly went ahead early in the game when a Bangkok defender lost the ball to Emery whose shot was well saved by the Bangkok keeper, and with the same player headed wide soon after from a centre by full-back Leat. The City keeper had to be alert as well as Bangkok counter attacked and he proved to be equal to the task.
With City playing an efficient offside trap, chances were few and far between for Bangkok but midway through the first half City gained a throw in on the left, from which Mokgothu broke clear, skipped past two defenders and squeezed the ball between the post and the Bangkok keeper to put City 1-0 in front.
This was followed up by a period of sustained pressure from City: a long run by Vorontsov saw Bryant receive the ball in a good position but he could not supply the finishing touch and from a corner kick captain Walter’s free header soared over the bar, which was the last action of the half.
After the interval Bangkok put together a series of attacks but they were short on ideas and the City defense held firm. City were now coming to grips with the Bangkok tactics and a defense splitting ball by Dipta found Vorontsov who slipped the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 to City. The visitors made it 3-0 soon after as Jannson sent a through ball to Vorontsov who shot past the Bangkok keeper to score his second goal in the space of 2 minutes.
City had the scent of victory and Vorontsov completed his hat trick with City’s fourth goal as the Bangkok team just collapsed. The hosts tried to get back into the game but a goal line clearance from City’s Tshuma reached Dipta in space and his pass found Vorontson whose shot hit the top of the net to make it 5-0 to City.
Bangkok managed to score a consolation goal just before the final whistle to make the final score 5-1. This was a steady performance by City who are now slowly climbing up the league, but there is a long way to go yet.

The new year is already well underway and although the club has suffered from a lack of numbers so far, mainly due to many players moving on, especially the students and gappies that we rely on, the 2013 season really starts now!
The Bangkok 10’s will be held this coming weekend (in Bangkok of course) and although we have been unable to enter a team, many of our regulars will be attending and helping out other teams. Our own Pattaya tournament is less than 3 months away and the organisation starts now.
As you are all aware we have reintroduced a formal membership in the club and to show our appreciation to those that have already signed up we will have a Members Night at the Tavern by The Sea on Monday 18th February, organised in conjunction with the Amari Orchid Resort who have graciously agreed to provide their famous Monday Night Curry Buffet to members at a giveaway price of Bt. 300 net and Damo has agreed to raid the beer kitty to get things going with a few sponsored beers!
For all members, sporting, social or otherwise, we will be issuing a unique Panthers Membership Card, which will entitle the member to a 20% discount on all food and beverage at the Tavern until the end of 2013. This is indicative of the Amari’s continued support and represents great value, I recently signed up a visitor from Dubai as a social member and he had paid for it within 3 days!
If you are a paid up member and have not yet received your membership card and cannot come along on Monday, please let me know and I will endeavour to get the card to you somehow.
Our first real game of the season will be at the end of this month when we will entertain the combined Navy and Marines team from the USS Bonhomme Richard.
This evening at Tavern by the Sea will enable you to meet up with a lot of like minded individuals, this is your club and we would like to create the right atmosphere so come along and enjoy yourself and let us know how you feel about your club.
Hoping to see you all there!
Jim Howard (Chairman - Pattaya Panthers RFC)

Thai ladies win Pentanque international championship

The victorious Thailand team pose with their coach after winning the 2nd Marathon Pentaque Women’s Confederation Cup 2012.

It was definitely worth the wait for the Thai female team and their supporters as they battled through 7 matches to eventually claim the 2nd Marathon Pentaque Women’s Confederation Cup, held in Pattaya from Jan. 26-27.
The tournament, sponsored by the Marathon Co. Ltd. and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), took place at the sports field of Pattaya School No. 2 and involved 8 teams from 5 continents. Representative sides arrived from Australia, Canada, France, Israel, Madagascar, Tunisia, Vietnam and Thailand to take part.
The Thai quartet of Thongsee Tanakhot, Panthipha Wongchuwdt, Amphawan Suwprik and Nanthawan Fuangsanit, began their long road to the final with an impressive 11-4 victory over African champions Madagascar and cemented their title credentials with a resounding 13-0 follow-up win over Israel.

Thailand continued to impress as the tournament progressed, with a 13-1 triumph over Oceania champs Australia being swiftly followed by similar sized wins over both Canada and Tunisia.
In the semi final the Thais were drawn against old adversaries Vietnam but the hosts showed no mercy as they dispatched their near neighbours 13-4 to earn a place in the final. There they would meet former world champions France who had accounted for Madagascar in the second semi-final heat.
The final itself was a tense affair with a lot of respect shown by both sets of players for their opponents, but the hot form shown by the Thai team in earlier rounds would remain till the end and they emerged as worthy 13-7 winners. Madagascar claimed third spot overall after defeating Vietnam 13-5 in the playoff game.
There was some consolation for the French team as star player Papon Angelique won the individual shooting category, defeating her Canadian opponent Bergeron Maryse 33-30 in the final.

Thailand wins ACC Women’s Cricket Championship

Thai captain Sornnarin Tippoch accepts her player of the tournament award during the closing ceremony.

Richard Lockwood
Thursday 31st January 2013 was a historic day for cricket in Thailand as the women’s national team held off the previously unbeaten Chinese by 17 runs in the final of the ACC Women’s Championship at the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club to lift the prestigious trophy.
Thailand’s girls will now have the chance to travel to Ireland to play in the qualifying tournament where they will lock horns with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, Japan and a team from Africa for a chance to take part in the next Women’s World Twenty20 finals.

Tippoch was the first player in the tournament’s history to score a century.

This all seemed highly unlikely at the start of the tournament’s final day as an overnight storm had swept across Chiang Mai, but the match was moved from Prem Oval to Royal Chiang Mai and this proved to be a fitting stage for a triumphant day for Thailand, with a large and enthusiastic crowd in attendance.
The Thai team was asked to bat first and they were struggling at 46 for five against a testing Chinese bowling attack when captain Sornnarin Tippoch was joined out in the middle by Chanida Sutthiruang. Suddenly a precarious position of was converted into a more than useful total of 95 for six. Sornnarin played the sheet anchor role with an unbeaten 28 and Chanida contributed a lusty 17 to a partnership of 40 in six overs.
When it was Thailand’s turn to field, Chanida dismissed both openers in her first over and China were 0 for 2 and then 5 for 5. The Chinese were unbeaten so far in the tournament with six wins out of six but they were now surely heading for defeat. Huang Zhuo did her best until she was out for 30 in the last over but Thailand were able to secure victory by 17 runs as China were bowled out for 78 in 24.4 overs.
The presentations were a joyous occasion as Sornnarin Tippoch lifted the trophy and also won the player of the tournament award for 13 wickets and 186 runs as well as becoming the first player to score a century in ACC women’s cricket, her 108 not out coming against Singapore in an earlier group match.

Thai players celebrate taking a wicket against China in the final.

Chanida Sutthiruang was named player of the final for her 17 runs and bowling figures of 3 for 6 and was also voted the bowler of the tournament with 18 wickets overall. China’s Zhang Mei was the batter of the tournament with 269 runs.
Iran won the Spirit of Cricket Award for their contribution on and off the field to a memorable competition that will be long remembered in Thailand. Chiang Mai had proved itself as the perfect venue for international cricket at this level with three contrasting grounds and the ability to organize a well-run tournament with 11 teams from across Asia.
