Kae wins back-to-back at Emerald & Treasure Hill
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Rod Cockle, Kae & Walter
Baechli.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Jan. 7, The Emerald - Stableford
It was a busy week with the PSC Club Championship on Tuesday
& Friday along with our normal Monday & Thursday games so our numbers
were down a tad but after a late cancellation we still had 24 on the
Starting Sheet for The Emerald.
We welcomed back Bob Akapita from Gove in the Northern Territory of
Australia & his mate Rod Cockle from Mackay in Queensland. It was also
great to have the colorful Walter Baechli with us once more & also
veteran Irishman Kevin Dinan who just lives “around the corner”.
With a later than normal tee time we took our time enjoying the free
coffee & idle chatter at the Growling Swan before departing in 3 mini
vans at 8.37 am & headed South down Highway 3. The journey was quite
quick and in 46 minutes we were at the course to find once again a large
group of Scandis booked in ahead of us so we knew we were going to be in
for a long day. We managed to get our first group away 7 minutes ahead
of our booked time of 10.30 am but watched in amusement as the
three-ball in front of us, all left-handers, hit their tee shots sharing
the same driver! Obviously they were out there for some fun and not
taking the game too seriously.

Kae & Peter Blackburn.
The course was in excellent shape and the weather was
terrific as it normally is at this time of year and as mentioned earlier
there was to be no hurry and plenty of time to “smell the roses”. It was
a two and a half hour first nine for us and as we stood and waited to
play our approach shots to the ninth greens it was touching to watch the
three in front of us pause on the green for several minutes after
putting out to take several “memory” photographs – how sweet! The good
part about that was they were only playing nine holes which did speed
things up on the back nine, but only marginally as the full round took
us four hours & forty seven minutes – our slowest round of golf for
quite some time. Nonetheless it was a very enjoyable day on a very good
golf course in great “nick” with excellent company.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade
was for handicaps 0 to 23 and B Grade for 24 and over. We had nearest
the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th
greens.
The course was playing tough for us on this day with no-one able to play
to their handicap and it was Walter “Mr Colors” Baechli who won the A
Grade with 35 points and Ebrahim finished second with 33 points. With 2
golfers on 32 points a count back was necessary to determine third &
fourth and it was Mike “Hunter” Gosden (16 point back nine & 12 points
on the last 6 holes) edging out Ken Hole (16 point back nine & 10 points
on the last 6 holes). Big Ken “Let’s hear it for” Bernek completed the
podium in fifth place with 30 points.
She’s been quiet for a few weeks but Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad returned to
form and won the B Grade with 33 points and in a count back for second &
third with 32 points it was veteran Kevin Dinan (20 point back nine)
beating Russell Calcutt (15 point back nine). Yet another count back was
needed to determine fourth & fifth as 2 players were on 30 points and it
was Robert Allen (13 point back nine) taking the honors over Sandy
“Leiperfrog” Leiper (12 point back nine).

2nd Ebrahim (16) 33pts

3rd Russell Calcutt 32pts
4th Robert Allen 30pts
5th Sandy Leiper (35) 30pts
Near Pins: 5th – Walter Baechli, 7th – Walter Baechli, 13th – Rod
Cockle, 15th – Vince Romeo
Long Putts: 9th – Peter Blackburn, 18th – Peter Blackburn
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won
in a count back by Rod Cockle who to his credit accepted the award in
fine style & wore the cap for several hours afterwards.
Big Ken paraded Deefa the Dog and many donations were collected for the
needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan Crew.
Back at The Growling Swan as usual the Aussie cold, low priced beers
were consumed at a frightening rate and the usual bad luck stories about
the day ensued but it was unanimous that yet another great day’s golf
was had by all.
Thursday, Jan. 10, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Once again the busy week reduced our numbers and after a ‘no-show’ we
had 18 golfers assemble at The Growling Swan ready to take the journey
and tackle the tough Treasure Hill layout. We welcomed Nial Stuart from
New Zealand and sadly bade farewell to Volker Buley who is returning to
Germany at the weekend after a month with us.
Departing the GS 7 minutes later than scheduled at 8.37 am we headed off
down 331 and without too many hold ups arrived at the course 45 minutes
later where the car park was just about empty. It took us quite some
time to check in as I produced the latest copy of Thai Golf magazine
which included a full page advertisement for Treasure Hill promoting a
Thursday Green Fee of 500 baht but, as I anticipated, this was a
“misunderstanding” between the printers and the Treasure Hill management
who insisted that this promotion applies only to “low Season” – Other
PSC Golf Outlets beware! I did however negotiate the Green Fee rate down
to 750 baht on this occasion whilst receiving a “humble” apology.
As previously stated, the course was practically deserted and we managed
to send our first group away at 10.10 am with no-one in front of us. The
weather was perfect and the course was looking very good although
several greens had been heavily sanded and in fact a couple of greens
were being sanded as we played.
We proceeded at a good pace and completed the front nine in just over
two hours with no necessity for a drinks break. It started to get hotter
during the back nine and after a drink stop before tackling the
“Crocodile Hole” (It got me again) we managed to finish our round in the
good time of four hours & fifteen minutes. It was a very enjoyable round
of golf with fine company.
We were able to have 2 grades with three podium spots in each. A Grade
was for handicaps 0 to 25 and B Grade for 26 and over. We had nearest
the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th
greens.
With only one golfer playing to their handicap the going was tough for
most and it was yours truly, Peter Blackburn who won the A Grade with 36
points, 5 points ahead of Graham “Grunter” Buckingham in second spot
with big Ken “Let’s hear it for” Bernek third on 29 points. Having her
second win in as many outings it was Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad who won the
B Grade with 32 points, four points ahead of Bernie McCart in second
place and Tristan Freeman was third with 27 points.
A Flight (0-25)
1st Peter Blackburn (10) 36pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (22) 31pts
3rd Ken Bernek (15) 29pts
B Flight (25+)
1st Duangjai Tusagad (28) 32pts
2nd Bernie McCart (29) 28pts
3rd Tristan Freeman 27pts
Near Pins: 2nd - Frankie Sharratt, 6th - Geri Crilly, 13th –
Sandy Leiper, 17th – Bob Akapito
Long Putts: 9th – Ken Bernek, 18th – Gary Monley
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by the departing Volker Buley who,
being the good sport that he is, accepted the award in fine style.
Big Ken paraded Deefa the Dog and many donations were collected for the
needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan Crew.
Back at The Growling Swan afterwards it was celebrations all round as
Mine Host Peter Grey was ecstatic about not being awarded the NAGA
trophy and was in fine form whilst proceeding to “roast” many that were
present about anything that he could think of. Another fun night after a
great day’s golf with one of Pattaya’s friendliest PSC Golf Bars.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker
Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am.

Cunningham continues hot streak
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

From left: Friday winners Phil
Waite, Sugar Ray, Ian Heddle and John Player.
Monday, Jan. 7, Burapha - Stableford
Suzi kindly started off the 29 Outbackers here at Burapha today,
as Capt’ Steve was down in Hua Hin. We played the C & D loops from the white
tees and John Cunningham carried on where he left off on Friday at Green
Valley, following up his 40pts there with another 41pts here and giving him
the Div A win as well as racing him to the top of the Race 2 Bkk leaderboard
on 1400pts.
Coming in second was Ron Dickie with a fine 37 points, followed by Marcus
Simmons and Sel Wegner on 34 and 33 respectively.
Div B went to the course specialist, Bob Lindborg on 36 points, with David
Davies (35) in second from John Player (34) and Tim Knight (32). Tim very
kindly put up two near pin prizes as it was his birthday last week and the
Outback put up two more on behalf of Capt’ Steve’s birthday which was
yesterday.
Near Pins were recorded by Bob Giles (C5), Dave Buchanan (C8), John Player
(D2) and Mel Hogan (D8).
There were five ‘2’s from Bob Giles & Paul Rodgers (C5), Dave Buchanan (C8)
and Steve Kerr & John Player (D2)
Div A (0-16)
1st John Cunningham (8) 41pts
2nd Ron Dickie (8) 37pts
3rd Marcus Simmons (10) 34pts
4th Sel Wegner (12) 33pts
Div B (17+)
1st Bob Lindborg (22) 36pts
2nd David Davies (26) 35pts
3rd John Player (20) 34pts
4th Tim Knight (20) 32pts
Tuesday, Jan. 8, Pattana – Stableford
A small field of only 6 here at Pattana due not only to a couple
of late withdrawals but also and most probably because of the big field
competing in the PSC Championship at Khao Kheow which started today and
continued on Friday. That happened to also be the reason why the Outback was
not at Khao Kheow today but we shall be returning there next week.
We played the A & B loops which were reported to be in fine condition. Our
thanks go to Tim Knight for organising the day, but for Tim it was not such
a good day as the caddie he had booked only the day before was killed in a
motorbike accident on the way to work this morning.
Although Peter Eriksen took the win with a great score of 39pts playing off
six, he was disappointed that he had thrown away such an excellent start,
making the turn in one under gross. Playing partner Noddy tried to keep pace
with him and nearly caught him on the back nine but there was some
consolation for Noddy, who had to settle for second place with 37, as he had
the only ‘2’.
1st Peter Erikson (6) 39pts
2nd Noddy Moyle (18) 37pts
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Greenwood – Stableford
In addition to the 16 Outbackers at Siam Planatation today, there
were another 16 here to play the C & A nines at Greenwood from the white
tees. The course was generally in good condition but was a little dry in
some places yet over-watered in others.
All in all it was worth the drive up there and represents good value for
money; the staff were friendly and we got away on time. The scores were
pretty average though, with only Ian Heddle beating his handicap with a
great 38 points, as Paul Greenaway took second with 34 ahead of Steve Plant
in third on 33.
There were four all tied up on 31pts vying for the remaining two podium
places with the usual count back calculation giving Andy & Sugar the nod
over Sausage & Steve Kerr.
There was only one ‘2’ from Mel Hogan.
1st Ian Heddle (4) 38pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (8) 34pts
3rd Steve Plant (12) 33pts
4th Andy Makara (27) 31pts
5th Sugar Ray Handford (18) 31pts
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Siam Plantation – Stableford
General Jack headed up to his favourite course, Siam Plantation,
to set off the 16 runners and riders at 8.44. It was an absolutely fabulous
morning for golf with superb weather and the course looking in pristine
condition. The hospitality shown by the management, starters and caddies
alike is second to none and they always make the Outbackers feel very
welcome.
Playing the Sugarcane (A) and Pineapple (C) loops, only the affable Lumpy
Russell managed to match his handicap to secure the win with 36pts from
Peter Eriksen in second on 35.
There were three ‘2’s from Doug Campbell (A3), Craig Poeling (A6) & Noddy
Moyle (C17).
1st Lumpy Russell (12) 36pts
2nd Peter Erikson (5) 35pts
3rd John Locke (17) 35pts
4th David Coller (22) 35pts
5th Doug Campbell (12) 35pts
Friday, Jan. 11, Green Valley – Stableford
The popularity of this venue is quite extraordinary; even on a
day when the PSC were staging their club championship there were still 50
Outbackers here at Green Valley. The trouble is that they (Green Valley) are
a victim of their own success and with three courses and so many players
they are running short of caddies.
This morning was no exception as permission was granted for players in carts
to play without caddies and even some walkers started pulling their own
carts until the caddies caught them up after a few holes. It was chaotic but
somewhat organised and surprisingly enough, everybody was away on schedule
to play what was a seemingly slow round, as it was a little stop and start
but in reality, most were round in around four hours.
Whether the disruption at the beginning put everybody off their putting
stroke or the greens played difficult to read is up for discussion but with
the exception of Phil Waite, who had the top score of the day (40pts),
nobody broke par and there were no ‘2’s! The second best score of the day
came from Svein Sorenson (36pts) playing in the same division as Phil.
Sugar Ray took command of Div C with his 35 beating John O’Keefe and Greg
Hill, both with 33, and Div D went to John Player, following up his success
a few days ago. John headed a count back of three players, himself, David
Davies and Ed Horrocks, all with 34.
In Div A, Ian edged out the in-form John Cunningham, both on 35pts, with
Peter LeNoury taking third with 33. As a result, John consolidated his lead
in the “Race to Bangkok”, with 1800pts and Ian moved into second place on
1600pts and Sugar in third with 1400pts, but there’s a long way to go.
Div A (0-12)

Winder wins at Crystal Bay
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

A good week for Mike Corner
(left) with 3 podium finishes.
Monday, Jan. 7, Crystal Bay C & A –
Stableford
A good turnout today, the weather was bright and
relatively cool and the course was in good condition, so everything was set
for a great day’s golf.
Our six groups set off on schedule and the pace of play was good until the
leading group caught up with a five-ball on the 14th hole. Nothing however,
could slow up Tim Winder, who had a great day and romped home with 39 points
ahead of Geoff Cox in the A flight.
Mike Corner won the B flight on a count back over Lars Strom with Les Burns
making a rare podium appearance in third place.
A Flight
1st Tim Winder (15) 39pts
2nd Geoff Cox (14) 37pts
3rd Tony Scambler (8) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (20) 35pts
2nd Lars Strom (20) 35pts
3rd Les Burns (29) 34pts
Near Pins: Mike Corner, Tim Winder and Colin Greig (2).
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Eastern Star – Stableford
A reduced field of golfers today, with a large
group of the regulars taking part in the 2-day annual PSC Championship and
deciding to rest up after yesterday’s exertions, in order to prepare for
Friday’s concluding round. Nevertheless, we had 16 players and set out in
great weather with a slight breeze to keep things cool.
Notable absentees today were Gordon and Marion Melia, evidently Gordon was
suffering with a chest infection, or was it Eastern Star phobia – whatever,
hope you get over it soon Gordon.
The course was generally in good shape except for the 13th and 18th greens
which seem to have major problems and have almost died.
William Macey has recently purchased a new “chipper” after years of
struggling with the conventional method (not to mention the visits to the
psychiatrist), and has rediscovered his old winning ways. William also
managed to take two of only three near pins hit today (did he use the
chipper?), with the other going to Ken Ellmore who was playing his last game
before returning to the U.K.
1st William Macey (19) 35pts
2nd Mike Corner (20) 32pts
3rd Michael Brett (17) 31pts
4th Les Burns (29) 30pts
Near Pins: Ken Ellmore and William Macey (2).
Friday, Jan. 11, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Once again we had a reduced field as many of the
lower handicappers were battling it out on the concluding day of the PSC
annual championship. We managed a healthy complement of 4 groups though,
including Cyril Wallwork making his annual visit, and the long awaited
return of Koji Yamada, who hasn’t been seen in recent memory. Both newcomers
had fairly disastrous returns, but Cyril did manage to claim a near pin
prize.
We elected to play off the yellow tees today, and the scores were generally
better than usual on this notoriously tough course. It can’t get much
tighter for the top three places with 3 players tied on 37 points (a great
score around here, even off the forward tees). The count back eventually saw
Bernie Stevens taking the top spot ahead of the resurgent Mike Corner, with
Tim Winder taking third spot.
The Bunker Boys contingent performed well in the PSC Championship, with Paul
Smith coming second in the low gross (despite dropping 5 shots on the last 4
holes) and Colin Greig winning the B Flight by three shots. Well done guys,
let’s see how you perform next week against some tougher opposition!
1st Bernie Stevens (17) 37pts
2nd Mike Corner (20) 37pts
3rd Tim Winder (17) 37pts
4th Dave Ashman (14) 34pts
Near Pins: Cyril Wallwork, Eddie Kelly, Neil Griffin and Les Burns
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our

McManus tops at ‘the Valley’
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s B Flight winner - Mark
West.
Sunday, Jan. 6, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Paraic McManus (7) 40pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (12) 37pts
3rd Dave Buchanan (1) 37pts
4th Yui Bietry (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Mark West (15) 37pts
2nd Christy Knight (21) 36pts
3rd Bruce Walters (15) 34pts
4th Don Lehmer (22) 33pts
Near Pins: No. 4 Nial Higgins; No. 9 Padric McManus; No. 12 Yui
Bietry; No. 16 Dave Buchanan
The low handicappers showed their mettle on this Sunday’s Green Valley bash
as only four players bettered their handicap, with three of those coming out
of the premier flight. The hard luck story was Dave Buchanan, who always
plays the course extremely well and had 37 points but lost on count back to
monsieur Thierry Petrement. The count back had to go to the second level of
the last six holes after the two players had identical back nine scoring.
Paraic McManus, who always keeps it down the middle with his laser-like
accuracy and then chips and putts it to death, was man of the match with a
sizzling 40 points, plus a 2. The last flight spot went to a three-way count
back, all with very good even par rounds, with Pattaya’s glamour girl Yui
Bietry coming out on top after rendering the man from Co. Dublin, young Pat
Regan, and Jon Haugen satangless at sea level.
The B Flighters showed less acumen as the 37 points of regular visitor Mark
West was good for the first place. Everybody’s favourite nice guy, Irishman
Christy ‘good’ Knight, took the silver with a steady even par round, while
Bruce Walters took the bronze two shots adrift, leaving Don ‘the Ladies man’
Lehmer to gratefully accept the closing flight spot.
Along with Paraic and Yui, Andy Keller, Bruce Walters, Colin Davis and Tom
Byrne shared the 2’s pot.
Apologies, in last week’s missive - I reported that Peter Kelly had won the
very prestigious under18’s Orange Bowl Junior World Golf tournament held in
the USA. On inspection of the entry form it was noted that Peter’s birth
certificates had somehow got mixed up and of course it was Patrick who had
won. I would like to offer my sincere apologies to all concerned.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3
near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add
your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Special ‘K’ back to winning ways
PSC Golf from Mulligans L akeside

Owen Walkley and Kurt Erik
Persson with Mulligans ting tong girl.
Tuesday, Jan. 8, Plutaluang -
Stableford
Tuesday was a visit down to Sattahip, playing the Plutaluang
course North & West combination. All who played thought the course was in
good nick & weather conditions were favourable, so an enjoyable day was had.
Some of our regulars were away at the PSC Club Championships, but their
spots were filled by a few new players. K, full name Kurt Erik Persson, at
over 80 years of age, has recently gone to the silver tees and is back
enjoying his golf and picking up some placings. Today, playing off 26, he
managed 37 points to hold off Jonathan Pratt (18) on count back, while a
shot further back in third was Phill Waite (13).
With the extra numbers, we went to fourth spot today and that went to Brian
Maddox (21) with 35 points, an early birthday present and Many Happy Returns
for Thursday.
Near pins were spread around between Noy, Neil, Jonathan & Frans.
Thursday, Jan. 10, Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday was a trip to Greenwood, with the A & B our allotted combination.
The course was in good condition, although a few greens on B had been
recently hollow tyned, making them a bit slower and bumpier than others.
In first place today was Owen Walkley (11) with a well compiled 38 points
while Phill Waite (13), who is showing some consistent form, took second
spot on 37 points. Low spot on the podium went to Jeff Wylie (6) who
finished with 36 points.
Near pins were a bit difficult to attain today, with Phill grabbing 2 & the
remainder going to the Banglamung Boy’s Home donations.
A quick round up of Mulligans Lakeside’s PSC Club C/ship representatives
would probably show a modest return, but could easily have been better.
Clive Hoseason and Jim Federspiel, both playing in C Flight, had 1 good day
coupled with an average day to just miss overall prizes. Joel Flor scored
the D Flight Long Drive & a Near Pin, while Jeff Wylie hung on for third
place in the A Flight net.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the
“Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to
see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Ferris finishes top on count back
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s winners with two of
Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Jan. 8, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
This day was a bit of a split, with many of our
normal players playing the PSC Club Championship, the remainder decided on a
day out at Pleasant Valley. Thus we had a reduced number, but still turned
out four groups.
It was quite interesting, early at Bert’s, to find players for both groups
meeting there and indeed difficult at times to sort out who went where.
Still, the players for Pleasant Valley finally got underway and were off for
their day out. The travel to the course being on a nice quiet day, we were
soon there and booked in.
This was a very fine day weather wise, and we found we were to start on the
10th, which is a difficult hole. So away we went just about on time. The
Course was quite full, so we knew it was not going to be the quickest of
days, but we trundled along quite well. The fairways were not too bad, but
the greens were a bit the worse for wear. Most courses are quite hard now
and the ball runs well.
We were soon round and it has to be said that the ‘Boys’ who walked
struggled, so it was into the showers and a cold one was bliss, then into
the restaurant and back to Pattaya.
Mark
West
Back at Bert’s we had many who played the
PSC Club Championship dropping in for a beer, but we got on with the
winners.
The winner with 39 points was James Ferris ahead of a count back that saw
Alan Sullivan in second with Keith Phillips in third. Well done all, but
playing with Keith Phillips, who does not get into the winners often, it was
noticeable that he had no points on the last two holes. Sometimes when you
realise you are playing well, Bang! it all goes. Still, we did have a few
beers.
Near pins went to Ken Hatton, John Hackett, Mike Gaussa and Alan Sullivan.
Friday, Jan. 11, Plutaluang – Stableford
This being the second day of the PSC Club Championship we had a few who were
not playing there so off they went to Plutaluang, and I have to confess that
in the circumstances, I decided to catch up on 40 winks.
Plutaluang, so I am told, was very dry with slow greens. The West and North
was the 18 holes played, and not surprisingly, with it being a Friday, the
course was full, leading to the normal 5 hour round. It seems that many
players like to play here but the South and East was the layout most wanted
to play, so that was maybe even slower. Still those who went seemed to have
had a reasonable time.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the winners to be announced, and the
winner was Mark West with 37 points ahead of Mike Gaussa in second on count
back. In third was Walter Baechli with 36 points.
Near pins were claimed by Mike Gaussa, Alan Sullivan, Gary Hobbs and Don
Richardson.
We were then reminded it was happy hour and proceeded to give it full
justice. T.T.F.N.

Return of the ‘Proper Golfer’
IPGC golf from The Links
Sunday, Jan. 6, Green Valley –
Stableford
As usual we had a good turnout today for our regular Sunday
fixture at Green Valley. The course remains in excellent condition with
the greens fast and true, but with a strong breeze throughout, scoring
was not as good as usual. Fortunately, this week, the management did not
put a local 5-ball out in front of our groups, which knocked a good hour
off the round.
Three people tied for second and third place on 33 points; Mark Stanley
missing out after only managing 14 points on the back 9. Father and son
team, Brian and Tim Wilkinson, took the minor places, family pride going
to the senior member, finishing very strongly with 21 points against 16.
The mysterious Norwegian known only as Mathius, took top spot with 35
points.
The ‘2’s were shared by Lyle Blaw, Jon Batty, and the very carefully
pronounced Athole Reid.
1st Mathius (5) 35pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson (14) 33pts
3rd Tim Wilkinson (3) 33pts
Tuesday, Jan. 8, Pattana – Stableford
For our next challenge of the week, it was off to Pattana to
take on the A&B courses off the white tees, although on a number of the
holes the tee boxes were well forward. As usual, the course was in
absolutely fantastic condition, but being very busy, the pace of play
was rather slow, with a lot of waiting around, especially at the par
threes.
After a front 9 where he could do no wrong, Andrew Purdie “eased off” on
the back 9 but his 37 points was still good enough for first place, two
ahead of Brian Wilkinson, who had to settle for a second consecutive
runners up spot. Third place was taken by Lyle Blaw with 34 points.
There was some consolation for Brian Wilkinson, as he registered the
only ‘2’ of the day.
1st Andrew Purdie (13) 37pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson (14) 35pts
3rd Lyle Blaw (11) 34pts
Thursday, Jan. 10, Treasure Hill – Stableford
A small but strong field, with an average handicap of 8.5,
travelled up to Treasure Hill to tackle this tough course off the white
tees. With the exception of a couple of greens, which were very heavily
sanded, the course was in excellent condition with the majority of the
greens very quick but as always true.
Conditions were perfect for golf, cool and overcast for the most, with a
few spots of rain every now and again to refresh the golfers. With such
a strong field you would expect scoring to be good in such conditions,
but somehow this proved not to be the case, as we all hacked around
merrily for 3½ hours.
Lyle Blaw somehow managed to three putt the 18th from around 6 feet,
obviously thinking 28 points would be good enough for first place, but
ultimately had to settle for third, one point behind playing partner Jon
Batty. Self styled “proper golfer”, Russell Exley, was proud of his 30
points which on the day was good enough for first.
Unsurprisingly given the standard of play today, there were no ‘2’s.
1st Russell Exley (9) 30pts
2nd Jon Batty (8) 29pts
3rd Lyle Blaw (11) 28pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 10.30am
on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.45am for Green Valley every Sunday. Sign
up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of
courses can be found on the IPGC website

Shuichi shows them how
The Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Khao Kheow on Monday, 7th
January, to play a stableford competition on the C and B nines, on a
warm and breezy day. The course is slowly improving all the while
after the serious rain damage of the last two wet seasons and greens
were running as quick as ever at the course.
The cut was at seventeen and under and the second flight saw Masashi
Iizumi make third place with 31 points, just behind Alan Flynn’s 33
points in second. Fittingly, on his final round this trip, Pat
Murphy came good with a very solid 34 points giving him his first
win in ages.
In the top flight Steve Evans made the frame again with a 31 point
score being enough for third place. In second Andrew Purdie again
impressed with 35 points and only he knows why 23 points on the
front nine were almost wasted with a wayward chip on the tenth that
gnawed at his thoughts for three holes. This left Shuichi Kodaka as
the only golfer to break par, winning the flight with the best score
of the day, 37 points.
Elsewhere Michael Lindberg recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day,
on C3, and the Booby Bevy went to John O’Sullivan for his lowest
score of the day.
Rabbi’s free beer draw completed the day for Dave Lehane and drew
the curtains on the proceedings at Khao Kheow when Shuichi Kodaka
showed the field how to do it.
McIntosh gives it some welly
Pattaya Country Club was the venue for the Pattaya Golf
Society on Wednesday, 9th January when the Soi Buakhao based group
played a stableford competition on the recently revamped course.
Fairways were dry, areas of GUR were not quite settled in, nor
marked and greens were slow.
Quite whether the club has seen “vfm” for the upgrade remains in
doubt as much of the back nine is “as was” except for a large yet
unobtrusive bunker on the fifteenth, an enlarged sixteenth green and
the demolition of the bulrushes around the water on the tenth and
seventeenth. With no greater challenge than before the group
expected fairly good scores and they were not disappointed.
Mike Wilsher, Larry Slattery, Dave Lehane, Alan Flynn and Larry Ang
all managed 35 points and shared third place whilst Masashi Iizumi
went one under with a steady 37 point return. The winner was Neil
McIntosh who brutalised the back nine with a four under display for
his handicap on his way to recording 40 points. Mike Wilsher
recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the sixteenth and Helene
Lindberg gratefully accepted Rabbi’s free beer draw prize later.
Pattaya CC? The jury is still out.
Sumptuous Sumner
On Friday, 11th January the Pattaya Golf Society visited
the popular course at Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition
in two flights with the divisions cut at sixteen and under. The
course was in fine condition and with the day set fair there was the
very real prospect of some good scores. Indeed the full field
average was to be almost 33 points.
In the second flight Jim Ferris followed his 39 points earlier in
the week with 37 points this time to take third place, just one
behind Gary Bolger’s 38. The flight winner was Alan Walker and his
forty points represented his best round for a long while.
In the top flight John Hackett took third place with 37 points with
Steve Evans taking second with 38 points. The winner was the current
PGS gross Champion, Pete Sumner, on the eve of defending his title,
and his round of gross 72, 44 points, was a sumptuous mix of power
and accuracy. His golf on days like this is unstoppable and he will
be the man to beat at Emerald next week.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Steve Evans (2), Rick Schramm, Pete
Sumner, Alan Maxwell, John Hackett, Henry Mah, Dave Plaiter and
Helene Lindberg whilst Yvonne Earley drew the boss’s free beer
prize.
The Booby Bevy was awarded to Andrew Purdie after an excellent front
nine again went haywire leaving him with the largest split figures
of the day. However, inevitably Pete Sumner had set his stall out at
Crystal Bay and the Annual Championship in a week’s time probably
cannot come quick enough for him.

Senior storms to victory
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Golf really is the most infuriating game; what it gives with one hand it
immediately takes back with the other. On Monday last, I was progressing
rather nicely and had amassed a mighty fifteen points after just six holes
and the world was a lovely place. Even on the sixth, after a tee shot out of
bounds and playing three off the tee on a par five, I still managed to chip
in from fifty yards for a respectable six, alright lucky six.
Ted
Senior - winner at Green Valley.
On the seventh the wheels fell off - my ball disappearing into the top of a
tree some two hundred yards down the fairway never to be seen again. That
was it, my head was gone and so was my golf game for the day. I struggled on
trying to get the train back on the tracks but ended up an also ran, cursing
my luck. I guess golf is a lot like life really.
So Monday 7th January the TRGG faithful visited Crystal Bay (A and B
courses) and it has to be said it was in spectacular condition.
Proving that they are definitely not also-rans, three
people all managed to amass 36pts at the top of the leader board only to be
separated on count back. Bob Watson, playing off plus one, was the winner
from Tommy Marshall (8) in second and Jim Cleaver (12) in third.
Congratulations to all three for not losing their heads.

Phoenix winner - Tristan
Gilbert.
On Tuesday 8th January it was on to Green Valley, another excellent course.
After an indifferent spell of late it was good to see Ted Senior (15) storm
back with his ‘A’ game and destroy the course and the rest of the field with
41pts, which was by far and away the best score of the day. Tristan Gilbert
(10) took second place on count back from Barry Wood (11), both returning
with a very respectable 37pts.
Thursday 10th January was the weekly pilgrimage to Phoenix (Lakes and
Ocean). Tristan Gilbert (9), who has only recently acquired his single
figure handicap, showed there is still more to come by taking first place
with 39pts. Billy Ostle (12), who is a real ‘Steady Eddie’ competitor, took
second place with 37pts and old Methuselah himself Jeff Wilcox (23) showed
there is still life in the old dog by finishing third on 35pts.
On Friday 11th January TRGG rounded off the week by taking a huge turnout to
play Emerald. So large was the field it was divided into two Divisions. Div
1 was for up to 13 handicap and Div 2 was for 14 handicap and above.
Division 1 was headed by Barry Wood (11) who returned the best score of the
day overall with 38pts. Mike Rushant (11) took second on count back from
Tristan Gilbert (9), both returning with 36pts.
Division 2 saw Jim McNeill (16) take first place with 34pts followed by
Roger Wilkinson (14) in second on 33 and Ken Brehm (21) in third with 32.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

Two days in Khao Yai – two very different courses
The Billabong Bar Golf Group

Richard Steadman, Allan Beck,
Greig Ritchie, Plare and Karen enjoy some after golf drinks in Khao Yai.
Monday, Jan. 7, Eastern Star –
Stableford
Eastern Star has got to be one of the hardest courses in the
area. The scores today were unbelievable with 31 points being the best of
the day, and that was by a visitor.
There was an incident with a cart hitting a palm tree, that does cost money
if you do those sort of things; accident maybe but someone has to pay to fix
it. There was some conjecture of the brakes not working to satisfaction, but
if you are not happy with the performance of any cart you hire, change it -
it’s cheaper in the long run.
Now back to the golf. As said before, the winning score was 31 points from
Brad Dodd while in second was the old master Bob Pearce with 29 on a three
way count back over Glyn Davies in third and Scott Eaton fourth. Fifth place
went to another visitor, Gary Drew, on 28 points.
There were no ‘2’s at all today so all the money was paid out to those in
the winner’s circle.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley was the order of the day, and 3 groups played there.
The course as usual was in great condition and a big thank you to Chris Dodd
and the Ryves brothers for looking after the players as Capt Bob took 4
groups on a tour to Khao Yai.
There were a couple of fine scores here with Richard Holmes coming with 38
points ahead of Chris Dodd in second with 36, thanks to his 21 points on the
back nine, then came Kev Waycott and Wes Rado, both also with 36’s. The
score’s went downhill from there.
The ‘2’s pot was shared today by Wes Rado and Bob Finley.

Friday winners: Geoff Boyle,
David Hausman and Mitch Black.
Wednesday, Jan 9, Khao Yai G.C. -
Stableford
The first official golf tour from the Billabong took place on
Wednesday as four groups took off from the bar at 8.30 heading for Khao Yao
and the town of Pak Chong to be precise.
This day we were meant to play Bonanza but it was full with South Korean
golfers so we cancelled and played Khao Yai Golf Club instead. What a
fantastic course and designed by the master himself, Jack Nicklaus. We got
off to an easy start as there was nobody else on the course, and there as no
humidity with just a nice light breeze to complement the golf.
This was the start of our two day tournament and the winner today was Scott
Eaton with a magical 40 points. In second place was Richard Steadman with 39
and third was Pauly O’Mahony with 38. The next best was from a bevy of
golfers all on 37 points; Greig Ritchie, Paul O’Mahony senior, and Allan
Beck.
After golf it was back to the hotel for a clean-up and then drinks and
finished in the evening by one of the best steaks you would get anywhere in
Thailand. We went back from the restaurant and sat outside with some
drinking gin and tonic until they had to send the security guard down town
for another bottle, not sure what time of the night that was. Thanks for the
Jamesons Mick, it was good to drink but hell the next day it was hard to
lift the head but the bottle did make a good guitar.
Thursday, Jan. 10, Mountain Creek - Stableford
Day 2 of our Khao Yai trip and driving into Mountain Creek you
wonder whether you are on safari ... amazing clubhouse facilities and the
staff there are very attentive ... much better than the facilities at Khao
Yai but the similarities stop there.
Knowledgeable people, who cannot be named for risk of a libel suit, had
recommended the course and were not actually wrong - it proved to be a very
difficult course where a number of the holes had bizarre quirks to them,
which if you want a bit of fun then they would certainly supply the
masochistic golfer with a sense that whoever designed the course had a weird
sense of humour. This was proven by the scores at the end of the day, the
caddies were no real help and this is certainly not a big hitter’s course.
The rating from the group: A lot of money spent but we’d rather be somewhere
else!
Now to the overall scores: Capt Bob 36/31 (67), Karen Craigie 36/30 (66),
Pauly O’Mahony 38/27 (65), Allan Beck 37/27 (64), Scott Eaton 40/22 (62),
Richard Steadman 39/18 (57), Greig Ritchie 37/19 (56), Bob Pearce 30/25
(55), Darl White 30/25 (55), Paul O’Mahony 37 first day then a walk off in
disgust the second day, Glyn Davies 38/12 (50), Walter Depooter 30/8,
another walk off after 13 holes, Mick Bowe’s NR, Bill Marsden NR.
As you can see, this place is not the one you would go to twice. There were
8 intrepid golfers that stayed another day to play Khao Yai Golf Course
again before coming home. All in all it was a very successful trip which
will be repeated in a few months time.
Friday, Jan. 11, Treasure Hill - Stableford
We played today 3 groups today at Treasure Hill. This course is
in fantastic condition but is still one of the hardest around - the greens
were as slippery as you can get and if you merely looked at the ball it
moved 3 feet. There were a few 4-putts out there from the scribe.
It was welcome back to Barry Lewis who has been away in about 20 different
countries in the last 7 months and this time it took him 5 days to get over
the jet lag. Good to see you back mate! Welcome also to Mitch Black, good to
play with you mate, it was great fun.
The scores were not the best with three 32’s getting the top places in the
winner’s circle, headed by David Hausman thanks to his 20 points on the back
nine. In second was Geoff Boyle and third place went to Mitch Black.
There were no ‘2’s again today so all the loot went in the prizes.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road,
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call in for a cold beer or give Bob a
call on 082 204 3411 if you want a game.

Big numbers usher in the New Year
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Jan. 7, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-16)
1st Lyle Blaw (11) 40pts
2nd Alan Hanlon (13) 35pts
3rd Alan Pilkington (8) 34pts
4th Mike Dabanovich (12) 34pts
5th Kevin Townsend (12) 34pts
Division 2 (17+)
1st Phillip Cass (21) 43pts
2nd Mick Lowe (19) 37pts
3rd Al Rolnik (19) 36pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 35pts
Red Tees
1st Martti Juutilainen (25) 24pts
2nd Mervi Koskela (28) 23pts

Phillip Cass.
It would appear that high season has now
really begun as the need for three divisions arose at Crystal Bay where the
course was found to be in good shape once again but with many other groups
also enjoying an increase in numbers, the course was rather crowded. But
that is quite normal and to be expected at this time of year, with so many
other close Asian countries suffering their usual winter weather and
migrating to Thailand in January and February.
Lyle Blaw shot in the seventies for the first time in over a year to take
the first division top spot by five clear shots. He completed the back nine
in three under handicap following a good start and left the rest of the
division too much to do to get into contention.
Allan Hanlon came second by a point ahead of a three-way count back for
second which was won by Alan Pilkington with a better 12 on the last six,
with Mike Dabanovich scoring 10 and Kevin Townsend 9 after they had all tied
the nine at 16 apiece.

Rick Holmes.
Phillip Cass also decimated the second
division, with a six shot margin, after shooting a round that was ten
strokes better than anything he had achieved previously in Thailand. He took
first place ahead of Mick Lowe whose steady play once again proved to be
sufficient to get onto the podium, this time one better than handicap and
just one in front of Al Rolnik in third, which left Terry Hodgkiss in fourth
a further shot back.
The Red division was taken by Martti Juutilainen who just edged out new
comer Mervi Koskela after they had left the rest of the division trailing.
The first division 2’s pool was shared between Alan Hanlon and Jens
Gunnarsson while the second division pool including a big roll over was won
by Mike Hill.
Before the presentations were made there were welcomes for new members Mervi
Koskela, Kevin Blake and Nigel Semrau and welcome backs for Kevin Townsend,
Mike English, Jukka Koskela, Heikki Vanninen, Paul Juutilainen, Takeshi
Hakozaki and Alwyne Burley.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Lyle Blaw (11) 38pts
2nd Dave Howden (14) 33pts
3rd Hal Hart (24) 32pts
4th Jens Gunnarsson (15) 30pts
5th Mick Lowe (19) 29pts
After the mass start at Crystal Bay, the lure of the Emerald seemed not to
be so great as the turnout went down dramatically and required just one
division to cover the field. It is certain that many of the non attendees
had been put off with the general condition of the course of late, even with
the use of a ‘lift and place’ local rule for the fairways.

Lyle Blaw.
Lyle Blaw once more showed his class with another runaway win, again by five
clear from the nearest challenger after returning a card that showed a one
under handicap on both nines and just one six.
This time it was Dave Howden that came closest with a steady round that
contained just one zero pointer.
Hal Hart dropped into third spot even after carding a couple of blobs and
six one pointers, but a couple of four pointers got him back into contention
for a place.
Jens Gunnarsson just got onto the podium in possibly his last golf outing
before having to return to sea with a less than memorable round, but it was
enough to see Mick Lowe off into fifth place by a shot.
There were no surprises when it was announced that there were no 2’s in
either division.
Prior to the prize giving there was a welcome for new member Hans Troste and
welcome backs for Leif and Torild Lossius.
Friday, Jan. 11, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain -
Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Alan Hanlon (13) 36pts
2nd Petri Nurmi (8) 35pts
3rd Martin Grimoldby (6) 34pts
Division 2 (14-20)
1st Rick Holmes (19) 38pts
2nd Paul Taylor (19) 34pts
3rd Grant Cadell (15) 30pts
Division 3 (21+)
1st Kenny Priddy (24) 34pts
2nd Benny Hansen (25) 33pts
3rd Hal Hart (24) 32pts
Once again it was back to big numbers at the always popular Phoenix where
the Ocean and Mountain courses awaited them. Although, very unusually, it
was the players having to wait for over an hour past their designated tee
times as inexplicably there had been an insertion of some 40 plus golfers on
the day and a later count of the car park showed the reason may well have
lain with three 50-seater coaches in addition to the 20 plus minibuses
parked there.
The day continued even more slowly ending in a five and a half hour round to
add to the over two hours wait, for some, on the tee. Fortunately this is a
rare occurrence at Phoenix where the management are normally very careful
not to overbook, so there must have been some heavy pressure brought to bear
from some direction on the day. But the course was in excellent condition
and after several beers the day seemed much brighter in the end.
Once again three divisions with the first being led in by Alan Hanlon after
a level handicap round was just enough to deny new member Petri Nurmi a win
on his first day out with The Haven by a single shot, with Martin Grimoldby
in third a further shot behind.
The second division belonged to Rick Holmes who was making one of his rare
appearances, indeed it was only his second round in the last six months, but
his score indicates that his handicap will soon be back on its way down if
he continues to play.
Paul Taylor slipped into second place four shots behind but four in front of
third placed Grant Cadell.
The third division was taken by Kenny Priddy who played through the
discomfort of a tooth extraction during the round to win by a single point
from Benny Hansen in second, who was in turn one ahead of Hal Hart in third
place.
Back at The Haven there were welcomes for new members John Bolton, Markku
Seppala, Kalia Seppala, Sergie Kronbergs, Paula Juutilainen, Martti
Juutilainen, Petri Nurmi, Ismo Oikarinen, Rauno Kari and welcome backs for
Heikki Vanninen, Mikko Anttila, Kari Peltalonen, Kristina Peltalonen, Antero
Halminen, Timo Tarvalainen, Vincent Gras and Tom Atkins.
There were no 2’s in the second division but the first division was shared
by Rainer Helling, Alan Pilkington and Martin Grimoldby.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Oakes cans ‘ole in one’ at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Jan. 7, The Emerald – Stableford
Our first visit here for around three months due to the
renovation of the course and the consensus after the round from the majority
of players was that they are happy to come back here on our normal regular
schedule of three weeks.
There were three men’s divisions out today with the equal cut at 7-14, 15-18
and 19 plus and a ladies division as well.
Billy Fitzgerald shot his best round ever with us to win division 2 with 41
points. Harry Vincenzi came second on 35 and Kari Aarnio beat Barry Stirling
on a 17/14 back nine count back to finish third after they both scored 34
points.
In his first game since his return from the UK, Pete Sumner topped division
1 with 35 points ahead of one of the freemason boys, Mike Chatt, in second
one point behind and Chris Voller took third with 32 after beating John
Chambers 17/16 on the back nine.
Verana Suhr won the ladies division, beating Miss Nut by two points.
Near pins went to Billy Fitzgerald, Dave Stewart, Barry Stirling, Volker
Suhr, Kari Aarnio, Randy Flello (2) and Andy Oz.
Dave Stewart birdied the 7th to claim the only ‘2’ of the day and secured
the rollover pot in division 1.
We all got back to the bar tonight and it was closed and with all the
rumours abounding here since it went up for sale two months ago, no one knew
what was going on so there was no presentation. Eventually however, the
shutters opened and to everyone’s surprise Faa and Olaf have returned as
owners after selling it six months ago, and with four and a half years
previous experience here at Siam Cats everyone was pleased.
There will be a few re-vamps to the bar here over the next couple of months
and with the road here in Soi 5 completely resurfaced and finished we have a
perfect location now in Jomtien.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Upon arrival we were allocated the A and B courses and for many golfers it
had been a long time since we last played the A nine; most people dread
teeing off on the par five first on the C course so relief for a few today.
This was our largest turnout of the week with 46 players and the cut was
almost the same as Monday for three divisions but with four placings in each
division today.
Div 1 (7-13)
1st Wichai Tanunsorn 36pts
2nd Pete Sumner 35pts
3rd Martin Grimoldby 34pts
4th Marty Rock 33pts
Div 2 (14-18)
1st Paul Butler 39pts
2nd Bryan Rought 38pts
3rd Wilf Latham 35pts
4th Ian Plummer 33pts
Div 3 (19+)
1st Mauri Friman 34pts
2nd Andy Oz 34pts
3rd Burnie Sinclair 32pts
4th Joe Kubon 29pts
Near pins were claimed by Mike Combs, Alan Pilkington, Dave Stewart, Wichai
Tanunsorn, Bill Callaghan, Ian Plummer (2) and Bob Poole.
Wichai birdied the 3rd on the A course and Sid Crawley the 5th to share the
‘2’s pot in division 1 and in division 2 Don Head has the only birdie to
take Monday’s rollover as well.
Friday, Dec. 11, Eastern Star - Stableford
After many complaints to the management the previous week regarding the
condition of the 13th and 18th greens, we waited to see what, if any,
improvements had been done here.
As always, three divisions out today and the best scores of the day came in
from division 3 where Iain Walsh beat Bob Poole on a 21/17 back nine count
back after they both returned to the clubhouse with 37 points. With his big
birthday bash on Monday here at Siam Cats, Rod Howett was in third place on
33.
Frank Kelly took division 2 honours with 36 points ahead of Darryl Blair in
second place, four points behind, and Ian Plummer, with his last round with
us, beat the telephone box boy Dennis Scougal 15/14 on the back nine for
third after they both came in with 29 points.
Playing off 12, Horst Starchl returned the best score of the day in division
1, winning with 35 points, while Bill Bertram took second two points behind
and after 41 points last week Billy Fitzgerald was in third with 32.
Near pins went to Frank Kelly, Tony Oakes (2), Chris Voller, Curtiss Hessler
and Bryan Rought.
In the ‘2’s today Tony Oakes was standing on the third tee, the 175 yard
par3, with the pin at the back and hits a four iron into the heart of the
green and watch as it then hit the flag and dropped into the hole for our
seventh hole in one since our inauguration six years ago. Congratulations
Tony!
Today was also Bon Voyage to Anne and Ian Plummer and also to Dave Stewart,
we’ll see you in a few months time.

Granville the Great
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Winners from the outing on
Tuesday, Jan. 8 pose for a group photo.
Mike Gerrard
Firstly, on behalf of all members of our group, we wish everyone a
happy, and more importantly, a healthy New Year.
Our first game of 2013 was actually on the 1st (New Year’s Day) but not many
remember much about it so there’s no point in me trying either. I do know
that the Relax Bar staff were having a well earned rest so we managed to
find another bar open who took good care of us.
So, our first proper winner of the year was the boy from “Open All Hours”
fame, Granville Swanton on Friday, Jan. 4. I have to say, Granville takes
all the joking very well and he even brings most players a banana every
Friday. We don’t play golf very well but you should see us all swinging from
tree to tree.
A superb 40 points to kick off the new year was Granville’s score, with
Francis Goyons 3 shots behind with 37 points and claiming third place was
Peter Harris with 36.

Granville Swanton (2nd left)
celebrates his win with the staff at The Relax Bar.
Near pin prizes went to Peter Harris, Granville Swanton and Keith
Etherington (nearly a hole in one). The fourth par three near pin was not
claimed by anyone so that prize went to the lucky draw.
Recipients of the lucky draw (donated by the Relax Bar) were Wolfram
Krueger, Mike Gerrard, Jonathan Fortis, with two new guests, both name Ulf,
being awarded consolation lucky draw prizes.
The first full Tuesday outing was on Jan. 8 and as you can see by the photo
there was a good result for a few of the Italian members. Can’t keep em out
of a photo!
The A Flight winner was Jim Neilson with 37 points. This win was but a
matter of time as his handicap has been creeping up slowly and we all know
any player worth his salt will play eventually. Well done Jim.
In second place with 34 points was Richard Baldwin, pushing Joe Miller into
third place by way of a better back nine.
B Flight winner was Peter Harris with 36 points, with Joris Goetschalckx in
second place with 35 and Adriano Reale claiming third spot with 32 points.
This was welcomed by all because it was the first time Adriano had managed
to finish in a podium place since he has been playing with us.
Due to his success today we blamed Adriano for forgetting to pick up the
near pin flags in his excitement. However we managed to work it out with the
help of honest players and the results were as follows: - Pellis Johnston,
Bob (The Boston Burglar) Neylon, Richard Baldwin & Jim Neilson.
Our lucky draw winners today were Sergio Volpi, Harvey Trewarn, John Bartley
& Sergio Poggi.
Our group consists mainly of Phoenix Golf Club members, but we do welcome
visitors as guests with a concessionary green fee of only 1.000 Baht plus
caddy and cart if required. However, we do limit our golf playing guests to
male only and they must have an official handicap of not more than 28.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22, we are holding our annual New Year Drive In
competition. We shall have a party after at the Relax Bar. The golf entrance
fee is 250 Baht per player and the buffet is 350 per person. All proceeds
from the raffle/lucky draw will go towards both the staff of the Relax Bar
and the Phoenix caddies and staff annual party. We feel they are the people
who have looked after our interests all year. There are a few spaces
available if anyone would like to join.
We also organise weekly sea fishing trips which are quite full at this time
of the year but if anyone is interested in either golf or fishing, please
call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further information.

‘The Divorcer’ strikes it big
The Backyard Golf Society

Don ‘the Divorcer’ (center rear)
with the girls at Kisses Bar.
Emerald golf club, like most others around Pattaya, suffers from an
over-supply of golfers at this time of year. When we arrived at the course
last week we were informed that the management had decided to shift our
regular tee-time back to accommodate 3 groups of hackers, but the starter at
least had the good sense to realize we play the course maybe 50 weeks a year
and shifted us back to our regular slot.
Needless to say several vocal complaints were made at the office when we
completed our round, led not surprisingly by The Quiet Man. We have now
block booked an earlier tee time to hopefully avoid this situation in
future. Groups turning up out of the blue with no bookings are another
scourge and why the courses risk upsetting regulars by trying to slip these
groups in and expecting no complaints is just one of the mysteries of golf
locally.
The round took about 4¼ hours and it was a novelty to see The Quiet Man,
Second-hand Bob and The Diet Whiskey Man last the course.
On to the golf and Don ‘the Divorcer’ scooped first place in the main
competition with 36 points, one ahead of Tony “Foos your Doos” Cowe. Don was
accompanied in the round by another French Canadian named Randy and we sent
Kit out as the lone English speaker to ensure entente cordiale was
maintained.
‘The Divorcer’ also won the near-pin on hole 15, the roll-over skin from
last week and 1 other skin, so he was more than happy to shell out for a
round of beverages later in Kisses Bar.
Tel won 9 skins with a standard par on the index 1 hole, where his handicap
enabled him to win the pot. He was pleading from the 1st tee to win a large
number of skins as he had forgotten to pack his society shirt and was thus
charged for a round of drinks, just one of the complex rules we adopt. Foos
your Doos won 2 skins and we have 6 rolled over to the next game.
Dan the Diet Whiskey Man is obviously well chuffed to get the cash from the
ex and laid on some grub for the ravenous players at Kisses Bar, where Yok,
George and the other ladies looked after us.
A couple of no shows today, as Golden Trowel’s boyfriend cried off with a
cold and Michelle Chatt went up the 331 to see the kids. JJ is looking a bit
unlikely for next week with foot, knee and thigh problems springing up in
his aging legs.

Cooper-Reade flies in with fab 44
PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Don Richardson (left) and Stephen Cooper-Reade
(right) with Dave Richardson.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Crystal Bay A & B –
Stableford
Crystal Bay was the game today and it was down
Sukhumvit for 45 minutes, over the 10 speed bumps into the clubhouse. After
a swift check-in we tee’d off on A1 some 15 minutes ahead of schedule but
behind two five-balls.
The weather was fine with sunny skies and a good breeze but as expected, the
pace of play was a bit on the slow side. The course itself was a bit dry but
was quite playable.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 40 minutes, welcomes went
out to Ulla and Kjeld Ravn and world traveller Stephen Coope-Reade. Goodbyes
were said to Ole Holst and Karen and Rob Brown.
We had two flights today with the cut at handicap 20 and the full complement
of near pins.
Don Richardson won the A Flight with a fine 41 points ahead of Rob Brown in
second on 35 while Takeshi Hakozaki took third on a count back from Bjarne
Kjar, both with 34 points.
Stephen Cooper-Reade won the B Flight with an amazing 44 points considering
he has been piloting 777s to various destinations around the world for the
past 9 weeks with little golf to be had. Brian Gabe returned a fine 40
points for second, Carole Kubicki was third on 36 and Susanne Gaarde placed
fourth with 33.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Don Richardson (12) 41pts
2nd Rob Brown (7) 35pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 34pts
4th Bjarne Kjar (18) 34pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Stephen Cooper-Reade (21) 44pts
2nd Brian Gabe (21) 40pts
3rd Carole Kubicki (23) 36pts
4th Susanne Gaarde (26) 33pts
Near Pins: A8 Ole Holst, B4 Takeshi Hakozaki, B6 Dave Richardson
Long Putts: A9 Bjarne Kjar, B9 Leif Kirkgaard.

City let victory slip away
Bangkok Casuals Football League 2012/13
Paul Frain
Pattaya City FC started their 2013 programme with a home match against
the French side Les Gaulois after last week’s final cup match was cancelled.
It was a match the City players were looking forward to as they wanted
revenge after losing their opening game of the season against the French
team.
Just before the kick off, the bad news was received that City had slipped to
the bottom of the league standings as the team below them won their game.
The omens were clearly not good and that feeling was exacerbated when it was
heard that three of City’s main players were having transport problems and
would be arriving late for the game.
With the match getting underway both teams started very slowly; City’s
Rakotonirina having the first shot in anger and seeing his effort go over
the bar while at the other end the French replied with a couple of headers
from corners that sailed high and wide. Chances were rare as both team’s
midfield and defenders kept a tight hold and it was no surprise that the
match remained scoreless at half time.
City’s three missing players duly arrived and put a different complex on the
match as it woke up in the second period. Pattaya nearly scored when
Turnill’s goal-bound shot was saved by the French keeper’s legs. Les Gaulois
then gained a couple of corners, with the second one being hit straight to
the City keeper whose massive throw out brought confusion to the French
defense: both centre-halfs clashed together and the ever alert Dipita picked
up the loose ball and sprinted half the length of the pitch to slot the ball
home to make it 1-0 for City.
Tshuma then tested the French keeper with two shots, but Les Gaulois nearly
equalized and would have done but for a good save by City’s Phansak.
As the match wore on Les Gaulois appeared to come on stronger and they
forced an equalizer when a shot was spilled by the City keeper and the
waiting unmarked French forward tapped the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
City almost had the last say with a good six man move but the shot went
sailing over the top of the French team’s bar and the match ended 1-1.
This was a rather lackluster performance by Pattaya City and they must
improve quickly if they are to climb up the league table.

January 8 & 11, Khao Kheow A & B
The ever popular annual Pattaya Sports Club Championship was held over 2
days on Tuesday 8th and Friday 11th January. Day 1 kicked off with 136
competitors separated into 6 flights; A and B flights playing medal from the
yellow tees, C and D flights in a stableford from the white tees, and the
ladies playing medal in their own flight from the reds.

Seniors Champion Don Lehmer

For the first time there was also a ‘Senior Flight’ for those aged over 70
who had opted to play from the new PSC silver tees (their handicap adjusted
accordingly) that are on all the local courses.
All 136 arrived well in time for the 2-tee start and were welcomed for
registration by Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham, Social Chairman Nigel Cannon
and Charity Chairman William Macey. As more ladies are entering the monthly
competitions, there was a variation to the design of the ladies shirts for
they had a choice of the usual design or the sleeveless variety.
The weather was fine on Tuesday morning and the course looked in pristine
condition so all was set for a great 2-day competition.

At the end of day 1 there were 4 candidates vying for top spot: The main
contenders for low gross were Mike Allidi, Dave Stockton, Jeff Wylie and
Paul Smith. In the ladies competition, there was to be a head to head
between Yui Bietry 78(11) and Ning Neal 77(10) although there were a number
of other ladies with net totals in the low 70s.
There was some excellent scoring in every flight but, since this is a 2-day
event, it depended entirely on performances in the second round. An exciting
day was in prospect for Friday.
Day 2 arrived and once again it was Joe and Nigel on the registration desk
and all was set for a good day to find the three 2013 Champions – Men’s –
Ladies - Senior.
There were 135 players today, just one less than Tuesday due to sickness.
The weather was a little cooler today and overcast – perfect for what was to
be a memorable day’s golf. Clearly the competition was keen as the rounds
were a little longer than Tuesday. Perhaps some nerves were beginning to
take an effect.

PSC were using some recently purchased software to calculate the results
both efficiently and quickly – thanks to help from Office Manager Mai. The
presentation was at Dicey Riley’s who again produced an excellent buffet
matched with great service.
After all had partaken of the food and drink on offer it was presentation
time – Nigel welcomed all to this the 19th Club Championship and introduced
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation for the help he
had from Nigel, William and Tony, with a special mention for Mai. He went on
to announce this was the first time that there would be a ‘Senior Champion’.
With a full field he expressed his thanks to all of the competitors and
apologized for those who were unable to secure a place.
Back to Nigel to announce the winners first the technical winners then the
flight winners.

D Flight winner Sean Murphy.
‘A’ Flight was won by Jan Anderson (6) with a 2-day total of 143 net.
Winning ‘B’ Flight (again) – as he did last month - was Colin Greig (12)
with 144 net. ‘C’ Flight winner with a fine 82 points (46 on day 1) was
Michael Jefferys (19), while Sean Murphy (29) won ‘D’ Flight with 81 points.
The Ladies Flight was won by Sunnee Chamanrum (25) with 137 net.
Next it was time for the 3 Champions to be introduced. The Silver Champion
was Don Lehmer (17) with 173 gross, the Ladies Champion, on count back, was
Ning Neal (10) with 165 gross, and the Men’s Champion was Mike Allidi (2)
with 152 gross.
Each Champion was greeted with a standing ovation – which is a PSC
tradition. All received trophies and Mike also received a golf bag kindly
donated by our major sponsor Singha, who also provided 4 umbrellas.
Following the congratulations for the new Champions it was time for the
lucky draw and the 50/50 draw. Wendy Chetland kindly moved around the room
selling the tickets and the first 3 numbers won green fee vouchers for
Burapha while a lucky lady claimed the 50/50 final prize of the evening and
went home very happy! It was then goodnight following an excellent 2-day
competition at Khao Kheow and the presentation at Dicey Riley’s.
The next PSC Monthly in on Friday February 15th at Plutaluang Navy Course –
sign up at PSC office or with a PSC golfing venue.
