PCEC honours Max Rommel

Pattaya City Expats Club Board Chairman Pat Koester thanks Max Rommel for his many years of service on the PCEC Board. With many new responsibilities with Rotary, etc, Max felt it best to resign from the board for the time being. Pat presented Max with a certificate recognising his new title ‘’Board Member Emeritus”.

Max Rommel received honour at the Pattaya City Expats Club meeting on January 6. Max is one of the three founding members of the Club. After his many years of continuous service on the PCEC’s governing board, Max is stepping down because of other commitments. In honour of his many contributions to the Club, Max was presented with a certificate formally proclaiming him to be Board Member Emeritus. The presentation was made by current Board Chairman Pat Koester and the other current Board members in attendance.

Max and fellow board members Thor Halland, Richard Smith and Roger Fox present a donation of 50,000 baht from PCEC members & friends to then Pattaya Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn, as aid for the victims of the 2004 Andaman Tsunami.

Max was also the presenter at the meeting. Max has maintained a history of the Club since its inception. As a disciple of the old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” Max regaled his audience at this week’s meeting with a history of the Pattaya City Expats Club in photos.
The story of the Pattaya City Expats Club began in early 2001 with three expat residents of Pattaya who felt that there should be a way they and other members of the Pattaya expatriate community could meet to share advice and information about the best way to live and enjoy life in Pattaya. Thus, the club came into existence in early 2001.

Max presents Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh with some birthday cake, on the occasion of the club’s 7th birthday.

In addition to being a founding member, Max continued to contribute his time to the club as a Board member; holding several officer positions including Treasurer, Vice-Chairman, and Chairman. He is the club’s historian as he has kept continuous records of the club that now fill numerous binders. Likewise, he has taken and kept numerous photographs as a visual record.
Max shared photos of the club’s Sunday meetings, member’s dinners and many anniversary celebrations. He also showed photos of outings organised by members of the club, such as to butterfly and crocodile farms, crystal factories, fruit farms and temples. Max talked about some of the special events in which the PCEC participated, such as a carnival in Pattaya, a public exhibit of photos of the Thai royal family, and a public meeting organised by the governor of Chonburi province during the bird flu scare.

As a founder member of Pattaya City Expats Club, Max shared the interesting history of the club with members and guests, new and old.

Max reminded his audience that PCEC organised a funding drive to help victims of the tsunami that hit Thailand and other countries in December 2004. Max also showed photos of some of the speakers who have entertained members at the club’s Sunday meetings over the years.
After Max concluded his presentation, Master of Ceremonies Richard Silverberg provided an update on upcoming events and called on Roy Albiston to conduct the Open Forum where questions are asked and answered about expat living in Thailand; Pattaya in particular.

Growling Swan helps Mercy Pattaya

A strong trampoline for safety.

William Macey
Members of the Pattaya Sports Club are fully aware of the problems that exist for the underprivileged and handicapped in Pattaya and many PSC venues not only support the club’s stance on this subject, but have risen to the challenge by raising funds in order that they may make donations to those that have very little to call their own, including a family to support them.
The conventional method of raising money is to have a charity golf day but the Growling Swan have adopted a different strategy during their regular golf days. Fines are imposed for the smallest indiscretion like arriving late, forgetting shoes or socks, hitting the ball into the water or perhaps going to the wrong golf course. Each demands a contribution to Deefa the Dog who is the guardian of this treasure. Nobody objects to fines that are imposed and, although they are quite small, it is amazing that such a substantial sum can be generated each year.

Ken & Wendy - Guardians of Deefa the Dog.

Such was the situation recently and after contacting Pattaya Sports Club it was agreed that a new trampoline be purchased for the Mercy Pattaya much to the delight of the children.
Mercy Pattaya is now situated close to route 36, having 30 children in their care. They visit slums on a regular basis and have approximately 250 children receiving help to enable them to continue their education.
The Growling Swan golfers are a friendly crowd who play from Soi Chayaphun on Tuesdays and Thursdays and welcome anyone that would like to join them. Contact Peter Blackburn for more information on 0806351386.

Redemptorist Vocational School receives a generous donation

Jens Maspfuhl, supporter of the disabled here in Pattaya.

Derek Franklin
A belated New Year’s gift recently arrived at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities in the form of a very large container from Germany.
The container was full of wheelchairs, walking frames, support chairs and crutches which will be donated to those in need both at the vocational school and in the local community.
This annual delivery is organized by Jens Maspfuhl and the organization he founded, DUK, a German based charitable organization whose aim is to provide aid and support, raise awareness and promote integration for people living with disabilities in society.
Previous deliveries have included much needed fitness equipment, all designed to make it easy for a person with a disability to use.
The students were very excited to receive their new wheelchairs and all agreed that getting around would now be a lot easier.

One of the lucky recipients of a new wheelchair.

Bunker Boys remember John Preddy

Toilet/showers.

William Macey
Pattaya Sports Club have been donating funds to help those less fortunate than ourselves for many years but many PSC outlets (bars) have taken their lead from PSC by coming up with different ways of raising funds for the underprivileged and handicapped.

Plenty of facilities for the ladies.

The Bunker Boys are one of the oldest golf outlets in Pattaya operating for many years in Soi Chayaphun aided by the late John Preddy. A stalwart of the Bunker Bar, as it was called then, both as a player and organizer, they take the conventional route by having a charity golf day on or around November 23rd each year to remember John. This year, 60 plus players, most of whom remember John, made the trip to Mountain Shadow.
With the help of KPK Foods, DHL, Indophil, and The Ranch, 50,000 baht was raised and was designated to the Anti-Human & Child Abuse Centre. Khun Ja recently acquired an additional rai of land which will be used for the sole use of the young ladies but many improvements were necessary to make this possible. The Bunker Boys funds were used to build 3 toilets/shower facilities, a sala and many truckloads of soil to level that particular area. When complete the wall be completed for added security.

The ladies’ sala.

The Bunker Boys play out of The Ranch in Third Road every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but if you would like to make a donation please contact Khun Ja 0819499349 or William at PSC 0861522754.

View of ladies area.

It looks so much better now.
