TOKYO, Japan – Typhoon Dujuan battered Japan on Monday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain that triggered flooding and landslide risks across the Kanto region and other parts of eastern Japan.
Japanese broadcaster NTV reported that a woman believed to be in her 60s was trapped inside her home in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, after mud and debris surged into the property to a depth of about two metres. Rescue teams were working to reach her but had been unable to make contact.
Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said evacuation orders had been issued for more than 1.67 million people across Tokyo and neighboring prefectures by 3 p.m. local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest-level Level 5 emergency warning for flooding and landslides in Oshima and villages across the Izu Islands south of Tokyo.
