CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Thailand’s Tourist Police have partnered with local authorities and community networks to enhance safety measures at Khlong Mae Kha, a rapidly emerging lifestyle landmark in Chiang Mai, while preserving its cultural charm and sustainable tourism value. Deputy Commissioner of the Tourist Police Bureau, Pol. Maj. Gen. Phongsiam Meechantong, said the agency is working closely with Chiang Mai Municipality, local residents, and relevant agencies to strengthen tourist safety and build visitor confidence, while maintaining the unique identity and traditional way of life along the canal.
Khlong Mae Kha, originally developed under a Royal Initiative project, has seen growing popularity among tourists. Authorities aim to balance tourism growth with community preservation, positioning it as a model for sustainable, community-based tourism in the city’s heart. Security operations will be adjusted to suit local conditions, with increased patrol coverage during peak hours and key tourist zones. The plan includes joint coordination with municipal officers, village health volunteers, and residents to provide rapid assistance to both Thai and international visitors. Authorities also plan to deploy foot patrols, bicycle units, mobile police teams, CCTV systems, and AI-powered surveillance technology to improve monitoring efficiency, deter criminal activity, and track suspicious individuals in tourist areas.
During his visit, Pol. Maj. Gen. Phongsiam inspected ongoing Phase 2 landscape improvements at the Chang Khlan cemetery area and reviewed progress at the connection point between Phase 1 and Phase 2 near Wiang Ping Bridge. He also met local leaders and residents to gather feedback for further improvements. Officials emphasized that the project is not only about creating a new tourist attraction but also about preserving local identity while ensuring safety and sustainable economic benefits for the community.
