Thailand braces for widespread downpours, flash floods, and rough seas from Sept 28–30 as Tropical Storm Bualoi intensifies the monsoon trough and strengthens southwesterly winds across the country.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an updated advisory on Tropical Storm Bualoi, currently over the central South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of around 110 kilometers per hour. The storm is moving west at about 30 kilometers per hour and is expected to make landfall in northern Vietnam between September 28 and 29 before weakening.

From September 28 to 30, Bualoi is forecast to intensify the monsoon trough across Thailand’s lower northern region, upper central plains, and northeast. Together with a strong southwesterly monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, the system is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall. Parts of the eastern north and northeast, lying along the storm’s edge, may see very heavy downpours.

The southern and eastern regions are also expected to be hit hard. Intense and prolonged rainfall could trigger flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflows. Vulnerable areas include foothills, waterways, low-lying zones, and flood-prone communities.

At sea, conditions are expected to worsen. Waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will remain moderate to strong, rising higher during thunderstorms. Authorities have advised mariners to exercise caution and avoid risky waters.

Officials continue to monitor the storm and urge residents in at-risk areas to stay updated on forecasts and follow safety instructions closely. (NNT)
