BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has introduced AI Psoriasis, an artificial intelligence system that can screen for psoriasis from photographic images with up to 95% accuracy, expanding the use of digital technology in healthcare. Developed by the Institute of Dermatology under the Department of Medical Services, the system helps improve access to screening and provide more consistent assessments.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesangchan said the technology analyzes the redness, thickness, and scaling of psoriasis lesions from photographs, speeding up screening in areas where dermatologists are not readily available. Testing on research datasets has shown an accuracy rate of up to 95%, although the system will undergo further evaluation under real-world clinical conditions and across more diverse population groups. During its initial rollout, AI Psoriasis will be piloted at selected healthcare facilities and service networks with the necessary personnel, information systems, and patient referral capabilities.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that can affect both physical and mental health and is associated with conditions including psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. AI Psoriasis is expected to expand access to screening closer to home, reduce unnecessary travel, and support timely referrals to specialist care while serving as a model for future AI-assisted tools for other skin diseases.
