Thailand seeks 100 billion baht in pharmaceutical research investment

Government Spokesperson Ekkapob Pianpises says Thailand is seeking pharmaceutical research and manufacturing partnerships to attract investment and expand access to advanced medicines.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is pursuing partnerships with leading global pharmaceutical companies to expand investment in drug research, development, and manufacturing. This effort aims to strengthen the country’s health economy and high-value industries.

​Government Spokesperson Ekkapob Pianpises announced that the Ministry of Public Health has held discussions with MSD and Roche and plans to meet with Sandoz and more than 10 other pharmaceutical companies. This initiative aims to move Thailand beyond contract manufacturing and establish the country as a partner in the research, development, and production of high-technology, high-value products.


​The spokesperson stated that initial discussions between Minister of Public Health Pattana Promphat and Roche included potential pharmaceutical research investment in Thailand of up to 15 billion baht. With negotiations involving other companies, total potential research investment could reach 100 billion baht. The government is also exploring opportunities for pharmaceutical manufacturing investment in Thailand and improved access to newly developed medicines through national healthcare coverage.

​The spokesperson noted that partnering in research and development could help Thailand access innovative treatments for complex diseases at more affordable prices. This approach would also create opportunities for researchers, healthcare professionals, and workers in pharmaceutical production and related industries. He emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s strategy to leverage healthcare innovation and investment to support economic development and improve public access to advanced treatment.
