Thailand secures a 136-million-baht cassava export deal during a government-led mission to Saudi Arabia.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Commerce has announced a successful breakthrough in opening the Saudi Arabian market to Thai cassava, following a trade mission led by government officials, private sector representatives, and academic experts from May 17–22. The delegation visited Riyadh and Jeddah to promote Thai cassava as a valuable ingredient in animal feed, resulting in an immediate trial order of over 20,000 tons worth approximately 136 million baht.

According to Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, the mission was part of a government initiative directed by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Commerce Minister Phichai Naripthaphan to expand cassava export markets and support Thai farmers by stabilizing crop prices.

The Thai delegation met with major animal feed producers and importers in Saudi Arabia, many of whom were unfamiliar with cassava’s nutritional value and potential as an alternative to conventional grains. To bridge this knowledge gap, the department invited experts from Suranaree University of Technology to explain the nutritional benefits of cassava-based feed formulations.

As a result, several leading companies—including Al Sanabel Al Zahabiya Industrial, Arabian Agricultural Services Company (ARASCO), and United Feeds—expressed strong interest in importing Thai cassava for use in animal feed. The initial order marks a promising start for Thailand’s cassava industry in the Middle East, with plans for further discussions on pricing, shipping logistics, and long-term partnerships.

The Department of Foreign Trade will continue to monitor the outcome of the deal and pursue opportunities to expand exports, emphasizing the global reputation of Thai cassava for quality and nutritional value. This development is expected to benefit Thai exporters and farmers by offering greater market access and price stability.
