BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Interior Ministers Polapee Suwunchwee and Worasit Liangprasit have ordered a comprehensive review of Thailand’s citizenship application system following investigations that uncovered several cases of foreign nationals holding Thai citizenship through nominee arrangements. The ministers instructed relevant agencies to thoroughly review citizenship procedures and eligibility criteria. The Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) was directed to examine records from the past year to identify irregularities and gaps in the system.
The findings will guide revisions to existing criteria and potential amendments to the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508 (1965), ensuring the law reflects current circumstances and protects the rights and interests of Thai citizens. The ministers also instructed DOPA to strengthen understanding of immigration laws among officials at the provincial, district, village, and community levels, encouraging local authorities and residents to report suspicious activities.
Particular attention will be given to cases in which foreign nationals may obtain Thai identification cards or personal information for unauthorized use in company registrations. Similar incidents in Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom may involve Thai nationals acting as nominees to bypass legal restrictions.
