NEW YORK – Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has affirmed Thailand’s intention to join the BRICS group and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Speaking at the general debate, Maris outlined Thailand’s commitment to sustainable development and people-centered policies while calling for reforms at the United Nations to better address global challenges and strengthen international peace and security.

Maris referenced Thailand’s role in responding to the situation in Myanmar, noting its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and promote peaceful dialogue as a close neighbor. He also made clear Thailand’s dedication to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and enhancing cooperation between the Global North and South, framing the country’s pursuit of BRICS and OECD membership to tackle global issues such as climate change and international stability.



Minister Maris reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to human rights, highlighting its candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025–2027 term. He stressed the need for collective global action to ensure human security and prosperity, presenting Thailand as a nation prepared to contribute to dialogue and cooperation among countries.

During his visit, Maris also met with members of the Thai community in New York, commending their support for Thailand’s diplomatic mission and contributions to strengthening ties between Thailand and the United States. (NNT)
