BUSAN, South Korea – A Thai delegation led by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin has held talks with officials from the UNESCO World Heritage Center during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea, discussing conservation, site management, and future nominations. Suchart met with Center Director Lazare Eloundou Assomo, affirming the government’s plans to continue managing Thailand’s World Heritage sites in line with international standards while balancing conservation, sustainable development, and community well-being. The delegation also thanked the Center for its academic, technical, and coordination support.
The meeting followed the recent inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Suchart noted the designation supports cultural preservation while creating economic opportunities through tourism, and discussed Thailand’s plan to nominate Chiang Mai: Capital of Lanna next year. He also provided an update on conservation work at the Dong Phayayen–Khao Yai Forest Complex. Assomo commended Thailand’s long-standing role as a State Party and its nomination experience, encouraging the country to share its expertise with nations preparing future nominations. (NNT)
