Thailand’s Narcotics Suppression Bureau is urging travelers and tourists never to carry luggage or packages for others, warning they could unknowingly become drug couriers and face up to 15 years in prison and fines of 1.5 million baht.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) has issued a warning to travelers and tourists against carrying luggage or packages for other people, saying they could unknowingly become involved in drug trafficking or other cross-border crimes and face severe legal consequences. Speaking at the bureau’s headquarters on July 2, Police Lieutenant General Atchayon Kraithong, Commissioner of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, said criminal networks are increasingly exploiting unsuspecting travelers to transport illegal goods across international borders.

According to police, traffickers often ask members of the public to carry what they claim are personal belongings, gifts or ordinary parcels. Hidden inside, however, may be narcotics, prohibited items or goods requiring official permits.

Authorities warned that anyone agreeing to transport such items could be prosecuted, even if they claim they were unaware of the contents. Under Thai law, those found carrying illegal drugs or prohibited goods may face criminal charges carrying penalties of up to 15 years’ imprisonment and fines of up to 1.5 million baht, depending on the offence. Police urged travelers never to accept luggage, parcels or packages from strangers and advised caution even when asked by acquaintances if the contents cannot be personally verified. Before departing on any international trip, travelers should carefully inspect their own baggage and ensure they know exactly what it contains, police said. The bureau stressed that taking a few moments to check luggage could prevent innocent travelers from becoming victims of international criminal networks—and from facing serious legal consequences.
