Thai officials visit British cave hero Vernon Unsworth during recovery in Chiang Rai

Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, presents a gift basket to British cave explorer Vernon Unsworth, who is recovering at home in Chiang Rai after receiving royal patronage and treatment for pneumonia.

CHIANG RAI, Thailand – Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), and his team visited Mr. Vernon Harry Unsworth, the British cave explorer best known for his crucial role in rescuing the Wild Boars youth football team trapped in Tham Luang Cave in 2018. The visit was made at the request of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin.


Mr. Unsworth recently received royal patronage from Their Majesties the King and Queen, who graciously placed him under their care after he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Following successful treatment, he has now returned to his home in Chiang Rai Province to continue his recovery.


During the visit, the DNP Director-General presented a gift basket to Mr. Unsworth as a gesture of encouragement and goodwill. Mr. Unsworth thanked the Thai officials for their kind support and said he is eager to make a full recovery and return to exploring once again. (NNT)
