Thailand’s Songkran Festival continues to grow as an internationally recognised cultural event, with widespread global media coverage and strong participation from foreign embassies. Government officials say the festival’s UNESCO status has helped strengthen its cultural value while boosting tourism, with over 30 billion baht in estimated revenue and hundreds of thousands of international visitors this year.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Songkran Festival has gained significant international recognition as a UNESCO-listed cultural heritage and a major global event that attracts worldwide attention.

Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek emphasized the success of this year’s Songkran celebrations, noting the festival’s status as a leading global event. Following its UNESCO recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Thai Songkran has united people worldwide through its blend of tradition and modern festivities.

This year, 42 foreign embassies in Thailand, including those of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, India, China, the United States, and Australia, produced creative media to promote Thai culture. Major news outlets such as AP, Reuters, Euronews, and Xinhua provided extensive coverage, especially at key locations like Khaosan Road. North American media further praised the event as a world-class “World Water Festival,” highlighting its important role in supporting Thailand’s tourism and economic growth.

The Straits Times featured the “10 Rules” for safe water play, which prohibit sexual harassment, unconsented powdering, and high-pressure water guns. This coverage demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to upholding international standards for large public events.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimated that the festival from April 11 to 15, 2026, generated over 30.35 billion Baht in revenue. About 500,000 international tourists contributed 8.1 billion Baht, a 6% increase from the previous year.
