SAMUT SAKHON, Thailand – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has ordered intensified inspections of high-risk factories and businesses in Samut Sakhon Province to prevent illegal wastewater discharges into public waterways. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin instructed the Pollution Control Department (PCD), through the Environment and Pollution Control Office 5 (EPO05), to coordinate with provincial authorities and relevant agencies to inspect establishments along Phasi Charoen Canal, Si Wa Phasawat Canal, and Ekachai Canal.
This action follows public complaints about suspected illegal wastewater discharges affecting water quality, including concerns raised by members of parliament and parliamentary committees. Pollution Control Department Director-General Surin Worakijthamrong stated that the Samut Sakhon Provincial Industry Office is leading the joint operation with EPO05, local administrative authorities, local government organizations, and the provincial natural resources and environment office. Inspections focus on wastewater treatment systems, waste management, and factory cleanliness to ensure compliance with the law.
The operation targets 36 high-risk factories and establishments. Between September 8 and 10, 2026, authorities inspected 25 facilities in Mueang Samut Sakhon and Krathum Baen districts, including food and seafood processors, seasoning manufacturers, textile dyeing facilities, metal foundries, and metal-plating businesses. EPO05 will continue to support provincial inspections, provide technical guidance, and compile information for water pollution management in fiscal year 2027. Si Wa Phasawat Canal remains a priority area for ongoing monitoring and pollution control by the PCD. (NNT)
