NARATHIWAT, Thailand – A roadside bomb killed one paramilitary ranger and wounded four other people, including two civilians, in Thailand’s restive south on Monday, security officials said.
The explosion occurred along Route 4057 in the Waeng district of Narathiwat province. Forensic teams arriving at the scene found debris scattered across the road and nearby bushes.
The blast killed Sergeant Adisorn Kamboonchuay, a member of the 11th Paramilitary Ranger Task Force. Two other rangers and two local villagers were wounded in the attack and transported to Su-ngai Kolok Hospital for treatment.
Authorities attributed the attack to local insurgents active in the border region. Security sources noted that the specific location has been the site of multiple previous bombings targeting security patrols.
A decades-old insurgency in Thailand’s predominantly Muslim southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat has claimed thousands of lives since 2004. (TNA)
