BANGKOK, Thailand – Protesters from the “Ruam Palang Phaendin” (United Power of the Land) group gathered at Bangkok’s Victory Monument this afternoon, demanding government accountability over the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border tensions and voicing support for frontline soldiers.
At around 2:00 PM, protesters convened under the theme “Sending Strength: From the Rear to the Frontline”, staging a peaceful sit-in rally. Despite the scorching heat, a significant number of participants took shelter on the elevated Skywalk, leaving traffic on the ground level still manageable. Police implemented alternating lane usage to ease congestion, though motorists were advised to avoid the area due to intermittent delays.
Security was tight, with eight screening checkpoints set up around the rally area. Attendees were required to walk through metal detectors and submit their bags for inspection. Officers also deployed police dogs to patrol the perimeter continuously, including entrances along the Skywalk.
On stage, a rotating roster of speakers took turns addressing the crowd. Afternoon speeches centered largely on the recent Thai-Cambodian border situation, the government’s perceived mishandling of it, and broader calls for political reform. Speakers emphasized that the public had gathered not to incite unrest, but to push for solutions through democratic means.
Among the key demands reiterated were:
The resignation of the Prime Minister to take responsibility for the border crisis,
Transparent investigation into recent cross-border incidents,
Continued support for Thai soldiers defending the nation’s sovereignty.
Prominent media figure and activist Anchalee Paireerak gave a rousing speech in the afternoon, energizing the crowd. Protest leaders announced that Jatuporn Prompan, a well-known political activist and former Red Shirt leader, was expected to deliver a major address during the evening session.
Police remained visibly present but allowed the event to proceed peacefully, focusing on crowd control and safety. (TNA)
