NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 20 November 2014 – An oil spill has polluted Nakhon Si Thammarat province’s famous Si Chon Beach, raising concerns from the locals that it may destroy marine life living in the area.

Si Chon District Chief Mr. Pithak Baripot has led a team of soldiers and related authorities to investigate the beach. Investigations reveal that the oil spill probably originated from an oil rig in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, as there had been a similar incident in February 2014 where an oil spill hit Si Chon Beach. The February oil spill had left 10 dolphins dead and washed ashore and devastated a large number of marine creatures living near the area.

Meanwhile, Mr. Anothai Amornkit, the President of a Marine Resource Conservation group, revealed that about 3-4 months ago, the group had spotted a large number of dolphins playing in the water. However, there are a few to be seen these days. Therefore, he has requested the authorities to quickly resolve the oil spill problem since it has a huge impact on wildlife.
