Indirect effects from Tropical Storm Tapah may intensify southwest monsoon winds, increasing rainfall in several regions from September 9–11.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall and potential flooding in multiple areas of Thailand as a monsoon trough remains over the central part of the country, strengthened by indirect effects from Tropical Storm Tapah.

Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Forecasting Division, said that from September 9–11, heavy rain is expected across the eastern region, northeastern provinces, parts of northern Thailand, and central areas including Bangkok and its suburbs.

High-risk areas for intense rainfall include:
-Eastern Thailand: Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chonburi, Chanthaburi, Trat
-Lower Northern Region: Phichit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun
-Bangkok and surrounding metropolitan areas

The persistent rain is caused by the monsoon trough over central Thailand combined with a moderate southwest monsoon covering the country. Although rainfall is expected to decrease slightly between September 12–17, scattered showers and potential flooding may continue as the monsoon trough shifts northward and the southwest winds persist.

Tropical Storm Tapah, located in the northern South China Sea, is forecast to make landfall in southern China on September 8 and will not directly affect Thailand. However, it may slightly strengthen the southwest monsoon over Thailand on September 8–9. Authorities urge residents to closely follow updates and warnings from the Meteorological Department. (TNA)
