BANGKOK, Thailand – Malaysian Prime Minister and current ASEAN Chair, Anwar Ibrahim, has spoken by phone with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, inviting him for an official visit and discussing the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border tensions. The details were shared in a social media post by the Malaysian leader.

Prime Minister Anwar stated that he invited Prime Minister Anutin to visit Malaysia after he officially began his duties in order to strengthen the relationship between the two neighboring countries.


The two leaders also discussed the latest developments on the Thai-Cambodian border. Prime Minister Anwar, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, said he emphasized the importance for all parties to maintain peace and not allow any differences to escalate into unnecessary tension, referring to the ongoing Thai-Cambodian tensions.

He called for all issues to be brought to the negotiating table through mechanisms such as the Joint Border Committee (JBC). He concluded by stating that Malaysia believes “the spirit of dialogue, diplomacy and understanding is the best way to guarantee regional peace and stability”. (NNT)
