CHIANG RAI, Sept 19 — A border market in Mae Sai district here is temporary closed due to flooding while many other provinces are still inundated.

The Sai River in Chiang Rai bordering Myanmar rose rapidly, overflowing commercial areas in Thailand and Myanmar yesterday.

Floodwater at Sai Lom Joy market was two metres high this morning, forcing more than 500 shops and stalls to close temporary.

The cost of flood damage at the market is expected to be about Bt50 million.

Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in Mae Sai has cut off electric power in flooded areas for safety.

Forest runoff from the Phetchabun mountain range in northern Phichit province caused canals to flood more than 50 houses in Phichit’s provincial seat.

Over 1,000 rais of rice fields are currently under about one metre of flood water.

Provincial Irrigation Office workers opened sluices of branch canals to drain water to the Nan River.

Meanwhile, floodwaters in Khon Kaen province in the northeast began to decrease. Residents in Khon Kaen’s provincial seat began inspect their flood-damaged property today after being under 50-centimetre deep water for two days.
