BANGKOK, 13 August 2015 – The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONBC) has given out 40,000 handbooks that educate mothers on the dangers of drug use and childcare, to related agencies.

The handbooks were distributed to the Department of Corrections, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection. The delivery ceremony was chaired by ONBC Secretary-General Permpong Chawalit.

The ONBC aims to use the guidebooks to educate pregnant women about the effects of drug abuse by mothers on their children, self-care during pregnancy, and child-rearing methods. Target readers include teen mothers and pregnant inmates of detention centers.

The publishing of the guidebooks is expected to promote proper childcare among young families with immature parents. Statistics from the Phayathai Babies’ Home indicate that as many as 80 percent of abandoned babies were borne to teen mothers or drug addicts.
