Cornell Law School has paid tribute to Princess Bajrakitiyabha, honoring her as a distinguished alumna and highlighting her contributions to justice reform, including work on the Bangkok Rules and support for women prisoners.
BANGKOK, Thailand – Cornell Law School has mourned the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati Kromluangrajasarinisiribajra Mahavajrarajadhita, describing her as one of the institution’s most distinguished alumni. Following her legal studies in Thailand, Her Royal Highness earned a Master of Laws degree from Cornell Law School in 2002 and a Doctor of the Science of Law degree in 2005. The princess went on to pursue a distinguished career as a prosecutor, diplomat, and advocate for justice and human rights.
During her service as a prosecutor, Her Royal Highness worked to improve conditions for incarcerated women, including mothers and pregnant women, through educational and vocational programs. Her Royal Highness also played a leading role in international efforts that led to the adoption of the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders, widely known as the Bangkok Rules.
Her Royal Highness also left an enduring legacy at Cornell through the Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol Scholarship and Exchange Program, established in 2007 by Cornell Law School and the Thai Bar Association to support advanced legal studies and academic exchanges between Thailand and the United States. The law school extended its condolences to the Thai royal family, the people of Thailand, and all those touched by Her Royal Highness’s leadership, public service, and example.
